Why is my late 2009 3.33ghz iMac running so slowly on mavericks? Was rapid till update.
My imac was running quickly since purchase untill mavericks update, now when finder open it takes a few minutes to full with content, apps take longer to open and generally fairly sluggish.
21.5" iMac (late 2009)
8GB ram
Core2Duo chip (3.3GHZ)
OSX 10.9
Anybody with similar problem or know any causes?
Regards
Adam
I think it´s not the best idea to install the newest version like Mavericks on this "old" mac. Maybe your iMac will be faster with an SSD. Sorry about my english;-)

I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling. Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
Thanks
paulThis isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'. -
Will windows 8 work on a late 2009 27 inch iMac
I have a late 2009 27 inch iMac, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM
I recently upgraded to Yosemite, 10.10.2
I have previously run Windows XP in Bootcamp
I need to upgrade my Windows because my banking software upgrade no longer works with XP
The questions:
Am I limited to which Windows I can get, 7.8. 8.1? Will any of these work?
A few weeks ago I used a link I came across while browsing the Apple support page on this topic, it analyzed my machine and recommended that I get Windows 7, 32 bit
But I see that the new Bootcamp 5.1 will only run 64 Bit
So which Windows should I buy,? 7,8,8.1? and 32 or 64 Bit?
And what Windows drivers might I have on my machine with Yosemite or be able to upgrade to?
Windows is not cheap, so I do not want to buy something that will not workWindows 8 will not work on your iMac. Please refer to the Boot Camp system requirements, System requirements to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp - Apple Support, to see which Windows will work with Boot Camp and your computer. With respect to drivers, Boot Camp Assistant will provide a link to download the correct drivers.
Alternatively, instead of using Boot Camp, you can use a virtual machine such as Parallels or Fusion to install any version of Windows on your computer. Virtual hardware and drivers are used if using a virtual machine. -
IMac late 2009, screen blacks out running Yosemite 10.10.2
My iMac's screen blacks out for no apparent reason, and the computer is still running normally. But I can't see it.
I thought temperatures were to blame, resetted fans with Macs fan control to speeds, where everything is nice and cool, the problem persists.
The screen might black out, for no apparent reason while working, or when idle. Trying to restart manually, it might black out while in the login screen, or even the apple logo. Or it might even restart normally and work for 8 hours. I have been trying to leave login items out, even Macs fan control an iStats, and the problem remains.
If I clear PRAM while rebooting, I might get a new lease of working life, but not persistently.
The problem started around two months AFTER I installed yosemite and with no new programs installed at the time.
Please Help.And an Etrecheck

Can Internet Explorer (IE) be downloaded to and used on the late 2008 model of iMac running OS X 1.9.5? If yes, where can it be downloaded from?
Only if you run Windows. IE does not work on a Mac without Windows.
Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive. -
My Late 2009 Model 10,1 running 10.8.5 frequently acts as though I have pushed the F11 button, but I haven't. The cables are not loose. Gently touching the mouse will get the screen back, but often it immediately goes back to the F11 mode. Is this a hardware or software issue? How can it be fixed?
I called Apple. The problem was caused by settings in Mission Control. After changing all 4 of the Hot Keys (if that's the proper term) shown in the bottom half of the Mission Control window in System Preferences to "-" by clicking on the drop down menus, the problem went away. Apple's help was excellent!

I have an imac running 10.4.11 and i downloaded the update software from apple downloads and when i try to update to 10.5.1 it says open failed this version requires 10.5 what should i do?
You would have to purchase a retail Leopard installer DVD. Since they are difficult to find you may need to search on eBay, Amazon.com, and Google to find a suitable copy.
If you have an Intel iMac, then you may want to consider upgrading to Snow Leopard which you can purchase at any Apple retailer for $29.00 versus the minimum price of $129.00 for Leopard.
Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
And, you could also upgrade to Lion by purchasing the Apple USB Lion flash drive installer for $69.00.
Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -

I have three Imacs running Final Cut X but only able to update to 10.0.7 on one of them. Everytime I try to update it ask for my apple ID which I submit...then I get the same message to enter my Apple ID...Any suggestions?
Easiest thing to do is put the app on the non updated computers in the trash and then copy the new app on to a flash drive and copy into the app folders on the other two computters.
-
Ok, tried message boards everywhere to try and figure this out before having to post a question. Have a 21.5" iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. After updates no wireless capability for ipad or laptop, imac connects fine but nothing else. No dashboard widgets work, Skype won't work. What goes?
Your post is pretty lengthy and I have to admit I didn't read it all. Please try restarting in Safe Mode, if that doesn't work please do both a SMC and PRAM reset. These may take 2-3 attempts.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
I have an iMac running with Parallels. Last year, my System Updates from Apple started popping up on PC side and I cannot find a way to link them back to the Apple side of machine. Cannot update iTunes to latest version where I use it.
Hello, do you mean the files end up on the PC side, or the notifications?
On the Mac side try this...
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ -
I just bought an iMac, while setting it up I was prompted to update the OS software. I tried to update it. It won't complete the update, and says "Error- requested timed out. (102) what does that mean? how do I fix it?
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List

Hello,
Sorry for the repost, but I realized after the edit period had passed that I left out a lot of information from my original post, and that I misrepresented my problem in the question heading. Because of this, I am posting again with the updated information.
I am using a 21.5" iMac from Late 2009 with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2. Recently, I have been experiencing several signs of failure/aging during use:
Frequent:
Mail.app slow opening, closing; messages opened in large batches do not get marked as read
Terminal.app experiences noticeable lag when opening (it sometimes takes between 5 and 20 seconds between launching the application and getting an active prompt)
Processes lag or become unresponsive, even when not many applications are running
Browswers frequently become unresponsive, pinwheel, or lag considerably, frequently requiring a force-quit.
Mouse Pinwheels Frequently
Intermittent
Computer generates loudly audible fan noises, persists even when computer is briefly powered off during a reboot; does not always stop after rebooting
Finder often becomes unresponsive
Rare (one time only)
Machine powered on in "Safe Boot" mode for no apparant reason; red text reading "Safe Boot" in menu bar of login screen; background picture slideshow mode became very glitchy, phased and flashed in horizontal grey bars before loading next background image
Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again, moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.
I followed some instructions from a similar thread, but I felt that my experiences were sufficiently different that I couldn't troubleshoot from someone else's solution. I would greatly appreciate any technical advice and help that the community can offer.

1: If I hold down option key with my USB plugged in to see my hard drives so I can boot into Windows, boot camp is not there. It does not show up on my Start Up Disk in my Mac, either. Though, I do see it in Finder with nothing in it (I can put stuff into it).
This indicates that your Bootcamp partition is still FAT, which also indicates that the Windows Installer has not been used to reformat it to NTFS yet, as required by Windows Installer. No Windows installation exists yet.
2: If I don't hold down option key with my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "Non-system disk, press any key to reboot". My keyboard is unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
The NVRAM in the Mac (as set by Bootcamp Assistant) is telling it to boot from the built-in Optical drive. Is it fully functional and has Windows Installer media in it or broken? Since no drivers have been loaded, the Keyboard/Mouse which are BT/USB, will not function.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications, it has a built-in Optical drive...
Optical drive
Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
3: If I don't hold down option key and it is without my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". My keyboard is, again, unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
No bootable media in Optical drive, hence this error. -
Late 2009 21.5" iMac has a chronically noisy fan.
After experiencing slowness on my iMac when browsing the web, checking email, and opening terminal prompts, I decided to upgrade from 4gb of RAM to 8gb. This has made the slowness less of a problem, but I am still experiencing other erratic behaviors. For no apparant reason, the fan sometimes starts running very noisily, even during computer sleep and sometimes even during the entire duration of the reboot process. Here is the EtreCheck diagnostic dump for my iMac:

Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again, moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.Could be a bad memory problem or an issue with Parallels. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the panics cease.

Why is my iMac running extremely slowly??
My mid-2010 iMac has been running excrutiatingly slowly over the past few months, with the spinning beachball popping up any time I click on anything at all. I started in SafeMode and the problem disappears, leading me to believe it might be a software issue. I've turned off all startup/login processes but am still having the same problem. I downloaded EtreCheck and the results are below -- can anyone give me any insights?

com.avast.PacketForwarder (1.3 - SDK 10.8)
com.avast.AvastFileShield (2.0.0 - SDK 10.8)
that you have installed. Please follow the developers instruction for uninstalling Avast and I'm willing to bet your performance will return. Not only is antivirus software for OS X unnecessary it takes up valualble system resources, tends to create more problems that it solves and hurt the overall performance. The best solution for keeping your system safe from the extremely small amount of Malware out there is to use a small amount of common sense. First is keep your system up-to-date by running Software Update regularly, do not download anyting that says you MUST download it and avoid illegal torrent sites.
