Why is my latest 27" iMac so slow ?
Can i know why my latest 27" iMac is so much slower as compared to my 2 generation ago 24" iMac when using FCE4 ?
I always have this message "preparing for video playback" and it also cannot handle 3 transitions stack together on top of each other (it gets stuck with a message asking me to cancel RT Unlimited but my 24" iMac was always on "RT Unlimited" & I don't have this problem before.
The only difference is that in the old 24" iMac I was using a 500GB Lacie FW800 ext HDD but with the 27" iMac I paired it with a cheaper 1TB Western Digital FW800 ext HDD.
Is this the cause of the problem ?

May be you can do the test, using your internal disk drive to see if the problem remove. And in this case you can blame your external disk.

Why is my brand new iMac so slow?
Hi,
I bought my iMac about four months ago. Never had a Mac before and I'd been looking foreward to it
for a long time!
Specs: iMac 27" | OS X 10.6.8 | quad core | 2.7GHz | 4 gig ram | 1 TB disk | 1333 MHz | DDR3
Very early it striked me how slow this machine was! Starting and rebooting is insanely quick, but
that's about it! I work in Photoshop, and it is just horrible. It crashes all the time! I am used to work
with several layers, I can't do that here. Because it's sooo slow...
I also work in a 3D program called ArchiCad and this is even worse! I've had to teach myself a
slower workflow to prevent it from crashing. I hate it...
If both Photoshop and ArchiCad is open at the same time, the Mac crashes VERY fast. I have to force quit app's
and reboot the Mac often. Sometimes several times in one day.
I see this little circus wheel all the time and it's driving me nuts!
Sometimes the Mac just crashes without having lots of apps open. I might have a couple of browsers open,
a word document, finder and a priview. And it crashes!
And I have to do the eternal job of force quitting and trying to tell the Mac to reboot. This often takes a while.
The Mac is full of small problems also.
- I have to install the magic mouse all the time! It just gets lost and I have to use my track pad
to search for it. Even though the batteries are new. Sometimes this only happends once every
second week, sometimes it happens 15 times a' day.
- Sometimes I can flip between pages in web browsers by swiping with the mouse, sometimes I can't.
Sometimes I can do this when working with folders, sometimes I can't.
- I often have problems with Java.
- The web browser Opera crashes all the time. Can't use it.
- Sometimes, videos from f.eks youtube can't play.
- Just opening a photo in preview can take 10 seconds! Not allways, but sometimes.
- Using cover flow with images is useless. It uses so much time to preview the photos with good quality.
You might wonder, what have this dude done to his Mac?
I have installed Photoshop, ArchiCad, Chrome, Opera and a small app for browsing an old iPod touch.
That's it!
Since I'm a photographer I've also put a lot of photos here, but not more than perfaps 100GB. Max!
I am very, very carefull with what kind of websites I visit. I never visit a website I don't trust.
I don't download anything (movies, games etc). Everything I have is original. No pirate.
So I brought it wth me to my local apple store. They thought it was a problem with the disc.
After being without the Mac for a week they told me nothing was wrong with it. It was perfect they said!
My jaw dropped all the way to the floor.
All they could say was that I could format and reinstall the intire system and/or upgrade to 8BG ram.
Do you guys think this will help? Why should I reinstall? I can't understand how I could've screeved the system up!
And really? I should use MORE money and upgrade to 8gb Ram? My previous 2gb Ram PC was so much faster! Is this necessary?

To start Dan, you are using quite a few CPU, GPU, RAM and HD intensive apps.
4 GBs of RAM isn,t going to cut it. 8 GBs isn't going to cut it! Not at all! 4 GBs Of RAM is the base (read minimal ) RAM the iMac model you bought comes with. It doesn't mean it's enough to run lots of Applications. Epecially processor intense applications you're trying to run!
Every re-iteration of OS X uses more and more CPU, GPU, RAM and HD resources.
OS X, BY ITSELF, needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM just to do its things smoothly.
Using Photoshop alone needs oodles of CPU, GPU, RAM and HD space for scratch disks.
If you are a seasoned Photoshop/Adobe user, you should already know this fact!
ArchiCad is another, CPU, GPU and RAM heavy app.
You have various browsers, email, word documents open simultaneously? Really?
More than one web browser open? Web Browsers also eat up lots CPU and GPU cycles and RAM!
The thing that eats up CPU, GPU and RAM cycles with web browsers is Adobe Flash and to some extent Java.
You're trying to run all these thing on very little to no RAM horsepower!!!
You're asking your iMac to run all these heavy processing apps with no additonal RAM available to do so.
As you've discovered, this is not working.
You're probably getting a lot of page in/outs and virtual memory swapping between real RAM and the hard drive.
You need to install, AT THE VERY LEAST, 12 GBs of RAM! I would just install 16 GBs of RAM and be done.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM, but this, I think maybe overkill. Try your system with 16 GBs first.
I have a 2009 27 inch iMac with 16 GBs of RAM running CAD and Adobe CS 3 and Blender 3D and other processor intensive apps with very little issues.
Buy reliable RAM from online sellers Crucial memory or OWC.
As wise advice from me, if you want to experience a smooth and productive Mac experience, do not upgrade your iMac to 10.7 or 10.8.
10.6.8 Snow Leopard is the last "real" version of the previous Mac OS X versions that many of us still love and use. Newer versions of the OS, basically, still have many issues and turn your iMac into a giant iPod, iPHone or iPad., Instead of being a fully customizable and reliable OS.
The magic mouse is really a crppy mouse to use with drawing and painting applications like we both use.
Ditch it and purchase either the old RF style Mac compatible wireless laser mice or purchase a wired mouse.
These mice are more accurate pointing and tracking devices.
Look at Mac compatible mice models from Microsoft, Logitech, Kensington or Apple
The battery life of the magic mouse is just poor, also. Its tracking is poor for fine mouse movements, too!
Does your wireless trackpad work any better? Is it better on baterries? Do you get fine control using it?
If the trackpad is better, than just ditch the magic mouse all together.
If the trackpad give you trouble, too, ditch it for a more accurate mouse, trackball or trackpad from another manufacturer other than Apple. Again, Mac compatible trackpads from Microsoft, Logitech and Kensington. -

Incidentally, as far as I know, Apple is not "working on this." OS X 10.9 runs just fine here and on most Apple computers.

Why does Yosemite make my iMac run slower?
Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite, my iMac is running somewhat slower and trudging a bit. Is this anything to do with the new OS and if so, is there any "solution"?

This second link above has something overlooked but is a good way to get at least your data secured
You can create a burn folder that contains all your important files. Whenever you want to back up the latest versions of those files to a CD or DVD, simply open that burn folder, then click Burn. For more information, see Create and use a burn folder.
2. once you back up you can concentrate on getting your iMac up and running according to Uncle or Aunt Apple standards by doing some things that Kappy suggested (see my first post).
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally.
Safe Mood boot is a good way to isolate some problems. It may be something quite simple such as a 3rd party app in your login items under Users & Groups in System Preferences. -
Why is latest InDesign CC so slow?
Upgraded to InDesign 2014 last week. Now my documents in my book files are incredibly slow to scroll through and some images do not display onscreen completely, but have white gaps. It's as though the application is requiring too many resources for the computer to deliver, which is amazing considering I'm running a hybrid drive on the latest model iMac with 16 GB of RAM. Get the spinning beach ball all the time.
Technically - you should work on ongoing projects in the version it was created in.
For example, I wouldn't switch to CC2014 and work in that if I was working on a project in InDesign CC.
I'd continue to work in CC - until the project is finished. If I need to work on it again at a later date I'd do the IDML dance and open it all in the new version, creating new files for the new version of InDesign.
That being said, the IDML route is a way of removing corruption/excess data from files and debloats them. It could simply be that one or more than one of your files had excess code build up - that could have been slowing down InDesign - or in fact confusing InDesign CC 2014 as it didn't know how to handle said code.
The IDML route is always preferred when moving from one version of InDesign to another, whether that's going back a version or forward a version.
Especially with Book files, I always recommend to start a new book file and convert the old files before importing them to the new book file.
This is basically because each version of InDesign is slightly different - see here for a better explanation - http://in-tools.com/article/whats-with-back-save-to-earlier-versions-of-indesign/
That explains why you can't open newer files in older versions - but it speaks to how the database changes for Indesign in each version.

My iMac is slow accessing web sites.
My iMac is slow accessing different web sites. I also have a PC that doesn't seem to have the same problem. Any suggestions. All other programs on the computer run fine. This has only started about a month ago. Any suggestions?
If Safari is getting very slow:

One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:

You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

IMac is slow, but macbook is fast
Hey everyone,
we just got a new iMac in the house and its internet is having trouble. its download rate is around 900 kb/s but my macbook is downloading at 3000 kb/s. I have copied the network settings except for the IP, obviously. I don't understand why one could be going that much slower using the same connection. It's affecting my ability to download a linux distro via bittorrent too. I download on the macbook and it connects to a ton of peers instantly. The iMac, connects to none. It's not an isolated bittorrent thing or I'd just install a new client. It is obviously (in my opinion) a connectivity issue for the iMac. If anyone could help, I would appreciate it.Hello myrdog!
Since you already have a working network, fixing the issue in your iMac will only take a minute, so it's probably easiest to just forget the old network settings for now, and setup a fresh configuration in the Network panel of System Preferences by clicking the "Assist me..." button followed by the blue "Assistant..." button.

Why won't my Intel iMac boot up, either from the internal hard drive or the DVD drive? It just displays a light grey screen, without any other icons, etc. The fact that it won't boot from the original system DVD is what baffles me the most. Any ideas? If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.

If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

IMac running slow (Etrecheck in post)

Recently my iMac has slowed to an absolute crawl, I've noticed this after an update to 10.6.4. Working in in InDesign CS4, I've noticed that files containing graphics with clipping paths (from Photoshop) take forever to redraw on the screen. In order to be able navigate with any kind of efficiency I need to relink those types of graphics to a TIF or JPG, then relink them back to make proof for client.
I've also noticed Finder hanging or freezing while trying to delete files from my server (Windows Server 2008 Standard) which requires a cold reboot. I get the spinning beachball with just about everything I do.
I been through the forums but haven't seen anything as specific as my problem. Adobe CS4 products haven't updated in some time, so I've narrowed to 10.6.4 update. These problems weren't present before that update.

Sorry to hear about your problem but rest assured it's not 10.6.4, it's stable however when you install any update unless you take a little care sometimes things can go wrong.
You don't mention anything about how you updated or what you have done to troubleshoot so I'm taking some total guesses.
First are some general rules of thumb when doing system updates. Some people may not totally agree with these but I've found my updates go smoothly when I follow this procedure.
1. Prior to updating ALWAYS backup.
2. Prior to updating disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse
3. Prior to updating run Repair Disk Permissions
4. Download Combo Update (10.6.4 combo is located at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048)
5. After updating run Repair Disk Permissions
6. Run machine for a few minutes to verify everything is OK.
7. Re-Connect peripherals
For now I'd recommend doing a SMC and PRAM reset, please read the SMC instructions carefully as they cover different models of Mac's each with their own processes.
If those don't work then try 1-7 and then get back to us.

Why is the WiFi and browser so slow on iPhone 5? I've noticed they are not as quick as other smart phones and have seen this brought up in forums. Also, the WiFi was slow with my iPhone 4 anyone know what the deal is?
Thanks in advanceSadly that spiffy reply was of no use. Browser is so slow and in looking at 3 different iPhones I have noticed there is a serious wait for any simple page to come up like MSN maybe its the iOS maybe Safari maybe should reset daily. Truly not impressed Apple can you here us now? Probably not... to busy restarting or resetting.
Truly hope it improves in a hurry.
