Why is my library so big?

Orig media and final product are 4GB each but library is 35GB...is this normal?

When you capture your footage the settings may be set to create Optimised footage automatically.
Some formats can be edited without using Optimised files, we need to know specifics to advise further on the type in use and whether the original files can work alone.
If Optimised are not needed you can delete these.
You can also delete render files as they can be re-generated any time.
Deleting files can be hazardous if you are unsure.
If you are working with HD footage then simply expect large files.
Ideally you would use another drive other than your system drive to store the captured clips and working files.

  • Why is iPhoto library so big? When I have only 4,000 pics, the size is over 31G!!

Is there a way to know what is taking so much space in photo library?
I have only 4,500 pictures, but Iphoto library is taking 31.5 GB.
The most part of it is from a folder called "Masters", I am not sure what's in it.
    Thanks

Do you sync photos to an iPod or iPad? If so there will be a folder inside the library titled iPod Photo Cache that can grow to rather large proportions if you sync alot. That could be the reason for the undue size of your library.
Also if many of your photos are in the portrait orientation iPhoto will make a second copy of the photo, rotate it and use it as the original file. That can add to the library size.

  • Why is my library a big long list or separated by albums?

what happened the the option of having my library divided into the artists and albums at the top, with the songs listed below? there is no longer that little eye [that is what it was, right?] that i can click on and magically have my library look exactly the way i want it to.
can anyone help me out with this?
i am really frustrated by all of the other options of how my library looks.

You mean the "Browser" function. It is still there, just no eyeball. Go to View -> Show Browser...

  • Why is my library 200+GB bigger after importing from Iphoto to Aperture

I recently got a new imac and decided to start using Aperture to manage my huge library. Previously I was using Iphoto 9 in Mountain Lion. My original Iphoto library is 687GB. I exported it to my external drive and works great from there.
Now I have the new Imac with Mavericks and just got Aperture 3.5.1. I have opened the iphoto library original in this new computer and it upgraded to the new version of Iphoto that I have here (9.5.1). Everything looks good.
From my understanding this is a managed library since I only exported the library file and everything is there.
After making sure the iphoto library file was working well I decided to go ahead and import to aperture. I decided to do this since I thought it would be a much better way to go with such a big library. The original iphoto library has around 9,200 photos and videos.
I created a new aperture library in another big external drive (Drobo) and imported the original to Aperture doing File - Import- Library and choosing the original located in an external drive.
After 24hrs of working finally I can see the new library appear in Aperture. One problem I have is that it is going extremely slow compared to the same library in Iphoto, but that is another topic.
In the new aperture library I see the exact same amount of pictures and projects appear however the library appears to be 930GB. According to what I have read in other discussions I have tried to find in Aperture using the keyword search to see how many of these photos/videos have a keyword of iphoto original (vs new masters that could have been created from edited versions of the originals. If I do "iphoto original" in my search nothing appears (although it keeps "processing" the search after a couple of hours (yes, that is how slow it is working now). Is that already something wrong? Is this keyword added automatically when you import from Iphoto?
I would really like to fix this since I still have two other libraries (37GB) that I would like to merge with this one. Is that crazy? Could I expect such a big library to work well? I am new to Aperture but so far I am not impressed at all.
The only file I have to work on is the one I have in the external drive since I already got rid of the old computer....
Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Would appreaciate any help.
    Thank you!

Your library is big, but nothing out of the ordinary and well within Apertures capabilities.
It's hard to say definitively why the library has grown so, but ultimately it won't matter, once you have your library working well and you configure Aperture how you want it to operate, and you tidy up any unwated artefacts from the import, your library size will become exactly the size it needs to be.
There are a number of possible explanations for why things are going slow.
First, check how you have formatted your Drobo storage. The file system requirements for Aperture are described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3252
Next, having chosen to import your iPhoto Library, you have essentially created a new environmet with its own preferences controlling things like previes, faces, places and so on. These could explain both the size and any (temporary) performance issues.
With Aperture running, press SHIFT+CMD+0 (zero). This will show you the activity window so you can see if Aperture is performing any follow-up tasks relating to the import such as building previews, building thumbnails, detecting faces and son on.
If so, allow it time to finish. Once it's finished all the post import activity, it will settle down and begin to operate in a more optimised fashion.
Depending on the history of you old iPhoto library, there could be some clean-up work do in terms of edited copies of originals. Old versions of iTunes used distructive edits, meaning you got an edited copy of your original. Aperture doesn't work this way and you will need to decide if you want to keep those (for example stack them with tier orginals) or if you want to redo any of them using Apertures non-destrutive tools. Later versions of iPhoto used a similar non-destructive approach which will carry over, so it's just any very old edits you may have to make descisions for.

  • Why is my library no longer accessable on my iphone g3?  It used to be there.

Why is my library no longer accessable on my iphone g3?  It used to be there.  Now I've got a partially list of audiobooks, (why aren't all of them there?) and NONE of the music or videos that are in my itunes folder on my computer.  What happened and how do I reload?  Regular syncing does nothing, nor can I drag files to the phone from the computer.  Thank you!

Called in and discovered I needed to adjust sync settings after loading Mavericks last year.  (Rarely use my phone for music, hence not noticing til now.)  Did that on my laptop in the iTunes library using the iphone button that shows when it's connected to the phone.  Works perfectly now.  Thanks so much for your suggestion!

  • Why is the library on my phone different from the one on my computer (I have iTunes Match)

Why is the library on my phone different from the one on my computer? (I have iTunes Match) I just want the song off my computer to be the songs I have on my phone.

    Hey there Sparkly3gs,
It sounds like your camera is not rotating as expected in the camera app. I want to recommend starting by quitting the running apps on the phone.
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
I would suggest before restoring from your backup setup the device as new and make sure the camera functions as expected. Then restore from your backup and verify it still works.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Why does my library show no content even though ATV2 can see my library?

Why does my library show no content even though ATV2 can see my library?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Library Library Too Big

Hey Everyone - moving form Aperture to Lightroom & now back to Aperture for my digital
workflow is my final decision on my workflow. This has nothing to do with the topic I just
wanted to put it in writing for my own benefit...wow, I wasted a lot of time trying different
workflows & "for me" Aperture is the best.
On to the Question: My Library size is 12.1 GB - with all the images "IN" the Library, so now
I Relocated ALL images to be reference & my Library is still 12.1 GB - I've rebuild the Library,
restarted the CPU with no change, anyone know what's going on?

    Hi
Your question is, I am afraid, not too easy to understand, it's not quite clear what you are trying to say.
Firstly, congrats on choosing Aperture as your workflow, it's a really cool application.
    So your question......
    1. Your library size is 12.1 Gb and all your images are currently located in your Aperture library.....
That's where you would expect them to be, so that's ok...
    2. This is the tricky bit.... " So now I relocated all images to be reference"......
Are you saying that you relocated all your images onto an external hard drive as.... "referenced"..... images and not "managed" Images......? And can't understand why your Aperture library is still 12.1Gb.......??
Or are you saying that for example, that you have imported all your images from iphoto into Aperture as "referenced" images and cant understand why your Aperture library is still 12.1Gb when all your images remain in iphoto.....??
Or have I missed it completely.......

  • Why did my library duplicate itself and how do I remove it?

Why did my library duplicate itself and how do i remove them?

An iTunes manual? It is supposed to be so intuitive you don't need a manual.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/
Most people don't have issues, but most people posting here do, obviously, why else would they come?
With regards to the way iTunes works (when it is working as it is supposed to) if you use the software the way the designers expected you to it all works out OK. The problems start with those of us who think things should work slightly differently and get then confused with the results. At that point you either have to learn to work the way the program expects you to, or work around it. I encourage people to do work with it, as is easier, but in practice I write scripts to enforce my will on iTunes.

  • Can't find out why my DB is that big

I've got a database which is 260 GB in size. Since I know the application behind the DB, I know the DB should never be that big. Even more, one night I noticed that the DB has increased 30 GB where no obviously activity in the application happened.
The database has multiple tables, but only one of them has the big size of ~260 GB (checked trough Object Explorer Details and by various TSQL-queries). So I know the table for sure, but not the reason of the size of it. It's actual not possible the data
inside it needs the storage, because the table has only 120'000 rows and only 17 columns. Non of the columns are LOBs, there are only datatypes of uniqueidentifier, int, varchar, nvarchar and datetime. Even when I take the max of 8 KB for a row and multiplicate
it by 120'000 rows, the database should be smaler than 1 GB.
I already raised suspiction the index or the statistic could be that big as some queries a had run results a Index-size of 220 GB. Other queries on the other hand results a small index.
However, meanwhile I've dropped that Index (moreover, the Primary Key behind it) and also dropped the statistics. There is no index at all at moment (I will recreate the PK_Index after the size issue is solved). I tried to shrink the database several
times, but I doesn't work. The size remains 260 GB. Yesterday I run the sp_clean_db_file_free_space which took 6 hours (!) but also doesen't decrease the database file. At moment I run the sp_clean_db_free_space SP, but I don't believe this will help me.
    So my questions are:
    * How to find out why the database is that big?
    * How to decrease it?
    Has somebody an idea? Thanks...

What is database recovery model? If it is full can backup the db then backup the log and then issue DBCC SHRINKFILE  to reduce the physical size fo the log file.
    What does it return?
    SELECT      @@SERVERNAME AS SqlServerInstance,
                db.name AS DatabaseName,
                SUM(CASE WHEN af.groupid = 0 THEN 0 ELSE 8192.0E * af.size / 1048576.0E END) AS DatabaseSize,

    FROM        master..sysdatabases AS db
    INNER JOIN master..sysaltfiles AS af ON af.[dbid] = db.[dbid]
WHERE       db.name NOT IN('distribution', 'Resource', 'master', 'tempdb', 'model', 'msdb')       -- System databases
AND db.name NOT IN('Northwind', 'pubs', 'AdventureWorks')                 -- Sample databases

Using Windows 7 and LR 5,  when I look at the Keyword List a certain keyword has 7 pictures but when I check the Library Filter with that keyword 350 pictures are shown which includes the 7 pictures that have the keyword.  Why does the Library Filter showing pictures that do not match the query

    Dan,
Here's what's going on in the catalog you sent me, "Joel & Caitlin's Wedding".  There is the keyword "gwenn", which is explicitly assigned to 7 pics. But keyword "schwartz" has a number of synonyms, including "gwenn", and it is assigned to 25 pics.  There is no overlap between the two sets of pics.
I discovered these two occurrences by doing Metadata > Export Keywords, opening the exported file in an editor, and then searching for "gwenn".  I found two occurrences of "gwenn":
    gwenn
    schwartz
        {gwenn}
From this, you can see that the keyword "schwartz" has 9 synonyms, of which "gwenn" is one.
The filter criterion "Keywords Contain gwenn" will match the 7 pics that are explicitly assigned the keyword "gwenn", and it will also match the 25 pics assigned the keyword "schwartz", because that keyword has a synonym "gwenn".
This illustrates the behavior I mentioned above: The criterion "Keywords contains x" will match against any of a pic's assigned keywords, any of those keywords' ancestor keywords, and any of the synonyms of the assigned keywords and their ancestors.
So LR is operating correctly here, if not in a way that's easy to understand.
It appears that you are using the synonyms of "schwartz" to represent individual members of the Schwartz family.  A better way of representing family relationships is to have a parent keyword "Schwartz", with subkeywords for each family member, e.g. "Gwenn Schwartz", "Joe Schwartz", "Jane Schwartz", etc.  Repeating the family name in the subkeywords has a couple of advantages. LR usually only displays the "leaf" name of a keyword, so instead of showing you just "Joe", it will show you "Joe Schwartz", helpful when there are a number of different people whose first name is "Joe".  Also, if you ever export your pics to other software, it may not understand the LR hierarchy and won't show the parent keywords, so again it's more informative to see a keyword named "Joe Schwartz" rather than "Joe".

  • HT1451 why does my library continue to disapear and must be re-downloaded from my back-up

why does my library disapear every time I close the file. When I re-enter Itunes library it makes me reload my library from a back-up file. Then I end-up with duplicates.

    Clone your system.
    Never apply updates w/o one.
And yes there is a page with all the Apple Downloads to do manually and then you can keep it on hand. Same for the OS X Lion or ML installer - save them before running. Still on 10.6.8 so you have OS X 10.6 DVD.
Combo updates do not do any harm. There could be issues to the drive directory beforehand.
Mac Pro has been shipping with Lion since summer 2011, though you can even now still reinstall iwth 10.6.4+
