Why is my Mac haemorrhaging data bandwidth - almost 30GB in 2 days!

This MASSIVE leak in data just started a yesterday. I can account the other spikes in the graph as I know that these were the times when I was downloading something.
I do not have the torrent software running.
In fact I do not have anything running that I have not had running from before.
Right now, even just browsing, I do not have anything else on. And suddenly I see a massive spike in both the activity monitor and the surplus meter that I have on. And there is nothing to indicate what process is doing it. This sudden spike takes slightly more than 1GIGABYTE! and then it calms down.
I have disconnected my wireless modem , just in case anyone was stealing bandwidth. But no, that didn't work. I am now using a wired PPPOE connection.
I am at my wits' end with this.

When you run out of real RAM you start writing to free hard disk space. This is paging in/out. This is much slower than using real RAM

Open System Profiler > Hardware
Copy the Serial number and model identifier
Under Memory in System Profiler, you'll see how many slots and what is installed. You need matching pairs. Most likely you will have to replace RAM you have installed unless you have 4 slots and are only using 2 slots.

I bought a new Mac, had the Apple guys migrate my data and apps to it. Now CS4 doesn't work.
I researched a bit and found that I SHOULD have deactivated and uninstalled CS4 from my old Mac. I've now done that.

My situation is a little different. I am hoping you can help me with it. I hope I am not violating any protocols by asking you specifically? A year ago I reinstalled my Mac's operating system. My CS4 is on my computer under "Previous System." I am unable to open it from there and I do not want to attempt migrating it for reasons noted above. I did try to reinstall it as you suggested to hbrady67 by dowloading from CS4 products with my serial number but I got this message: "Upgrade Check We looked in the default location for qualifying products installed on the machine, but none were found. You may verify upgrade eligibility now by completing the fields to the right. 1) Select a product you already own. 2) Enter a serial number for this product. CS4 wasn't in the list of selections. I found the solution to this problem. I was able to download the trial version of what I have and enter the serial number from there. However, it still asked for a serial number from previous software: "your setup is for an upgrade version of Adobe Creative Suite 4." (I entered the serial number that I have for CS2. If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Why are my mail receive dates wrong?

During the overnight while I slept, something went afoul with my mail. I awoke to find two unread in my inbox. I couldn't understand why they weren't showing up. I then scrolled through all history (knowing I had read all mail before sleep) to find the unread mail was at the very beginning. They were there because the date received was listed as some day n time in 2009 (before I even had a computer). The time, and day on the mail is correct. So my question is. Why is my mailbox thinking it's 2009? Sorry for the long explanation, just trying to avoid any other questions that may arise to find an answer. I would appreciate any input.

Which updates were you trying to get? If you are going to a very busy web site or server, the connections could be extremely slow. But to wait so long invites troubles.
If the machine is terribly slow, that should be an indication some maintenance or repair may be needed first. Some keyboard shortcuts can be used to check and attempt repair, and the problem likely is in the Mac.
Everything from the amount of RAM installed, to the total capacity of the HDD (or SSD) vs free or unused space on the drive, is important to the function of the OS X. Or there may be an issue, if the OS X checks out OK, in the internet connection. If you use wireless mostly, check the connections by wire instead.
Try to not get into a position where you end up using 'force quit' if the computer appears to freeze up. In the process of an update or upgrade, that's almost never a positive outcome.

A server parses parameters using the common ISO 8859-1 charset. When a browser uses another charset, it is supposed to send the encoding information in the Content-Type header of the request, but almost no browsers do.
In the Servlet 2.2 API (e.g Tomcat 3.x), the methods that parse parameter input always assume that it's sent as ISO 8859-1. So they create a String containing the correct bytes but incorrect charset.

Why do I get such low bandwidth using buffered encoder reads?

I have a PXI system with 10 6115 A/D boards and a 6608 timing board. I can do a simultaneous buffered AI at 5 MHz across all 40 channels of the 6115's.
However, I can only do a single buffered encoder read at about 100 kHz.
Why such a huge difference in bandwidth?

I think the difference in bandwidth here is really due to size of the FIFO's present on each device. The 6115 has either a 16 or 32 Mega-Sample FIFO for analog input. If one of the 6115's isn't granted usage of the bus for a "large" amount of time, it can absorb this by backlogging the data into its FIFO until it is granted the bus, at which time the DMA controller will move the data to host memory before the FIFO overflows. The same is not true of the counters on the 6608. Each counter on the 6608 has an effective FIFO size of 2 Samples. This means at high sampling rates, the 6608 cannot withstand "large" amounts of time without being granted usage of the bus. How fast you can go before the counter FIFO overflows is going to be system dependent, but 200 KHz is in line with results I have observed. If you need to go faster, you can use two counter measurement methods, but you will sacrifice accuracy for speed. For example, by dividing down your input signal by 4, you will be able to go 4 times as fast, but your accuracy will also decrease by a factor of 4. You'll have to weigh the requirements of your application to determine if this type of trade off is acceptable.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
