Why is my mac overheating?

For the past few weeks i have noticed that my MacBook Pro has been getting very hot and then shutting down. i downloaded a prgram to monitor the heat sensors and i am seeing a spike of 105 degress C in the cpu. is there any common issue causing mid-2009 MacBook Pro's to over heat?

Open Activity Monitor when these conditions arise and determine what applications are running.  Some games will load the processors causing high internal temperatures which would be considered 'normal'.  If your only web browsing, that would be abnormal.

  • Why is my Mac overheated and taken a lot of space

    Hello. I have trouble for two months and I never experience this before. When I boot up Mac and start to use some programs e.g. Safari or Adobe Photoshop, my Mac begins to overheat and hear the noise from a fan in side. Moreover, when I check at "About my Mac" and see available space, from 60GB left to less than 10 GB in few minute. In the other hand, my Windows 7 has no trouble at all.
    So I decide to delete bootcamp, clear up disk and reinstall OS X. But, again, after I launch Safari which is newly preinstalled, my Mac is overheat again and now it steals 20 GB.
    I have no idea on how to solve this problem and need urgent helps from the ones who know.
    I use MacBook Air (Mid 2012) and run OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.
    Thank you for reading and trying to solve my problem.

  • Why is the CPU overheating?

    Hi!
    The CPU and Heat Sink A of my late 2008 MB (2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM) are at 70-80 C about 80% of the time, although CPU and RAM usage is only at around 10% each. This causes the fan to run at ~6000 rpm. Why is the CPU overheating?
    The reason does not seem to be a sofware issue: The overheating occurs both in safe mode and as a new user (sometimes even right after starting the machine). I have no Adware installed. SMC Reset did not help. Energy usage settings are as efficient as possible. I deleted Adobe flash player items in the library. Spotlight indexing is not the issue.
    Therefore I suspect a hardware problem, although both AHT and the hardware test at the Genius bar did not show any problems. I have cleaned the fan and surrounding area thoroughly. The fan itself seems to be OK, since it correlates positively and perfectly with CPU temperature.
    Genius bar suggested to switch from 10.9.2. back to 10.6., but this is not a long-term option for me. I think would have to hand in the machine to a specialist for further analysis, or for examining/renewingthermal paste, but I do not want to spend too much money on the machine anymore.
    This is why I hope this forum has further advice!

    why is my mac book pro overheating and the fan not coming on?

    What is the EXACT model MBP that you have?
    Open Activilty Monitor and set it to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
    Download iStat menus:

    When your MBP gets 'hot', post images of both for evaluation.

    you mentioned that Terminal does not work at all for your MacBook Pro. What currently happens when you run Terminal? In what way does it not work?

    Why does my mac reboot on its own?

    Oh den.thed...  I saw your post this morning and I was so excited....  ran to the Mac and got to Energy Saver, and...  the checkbox is already unchecked.
    Long story, I'll make it short.  Just got the Mac back after having the HDD replaced.  (It stopped working after less than 500 hours.)  This rebooting thing has been happening ever since I got the computer in 2010, and I was hoping it would coincidentally stop happening after having this crashed HDD replaced last week.  No such luck.  Still doing it, even after getting the computer back from Apple.  Two of my kids have macbooks, have used the cr*p out of them, and have had very few problems (nothing big).  I bought this Mac, to replace a dead Dell desktop that got very little use, and so far I am not sure I did the right thing.  Really wish I could get this "automatic" rebooting thing fixed.  (Reboots with no notice, while doing normal tasks - internet, word docs, etc.)  Thanks again for your help.  Let me know if I should try anything else.

    I'm thinking that you have a > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications because the 2010 model's only have Core 2 Duo processors and the 2011 had the first i5 processor.
    2 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for Mountain Lion, but it's hardly enough to really enjoy doing anything else.
    see > Memory and Free Installation Guides for Apple Mac Mini
    Plus I don't have any problems running Mountain Lion and a load of App's on my 2010 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM.

The app tells me I can connect through bluetooth with my iPad but sadly, it can't... I've been trying to pair them but the can't discover each other... :(

  • Random muting of Mac sound. Why doesn't Mac adress this?

    I am having a recurring problem with the sound randomly muting. In the System Preferences panel, the volume slider is grayed out and the 'mute' option is checked but also greyed out. This has been happening on and off for a while. Sometimes restarting works but not always. In googling this problem it is obvious that this has been happening to many people since at least 2008. What is going on here and why doesn't Mac fix this problem? It is a huge waste of time when working on a project to have to screw around with this.
    Has anyone found a real fix other than just trying to reboot?
    I am using a 27" iMac, 2.93 ghz/core i7, Mac OSX 10.7.4.

    A couple of shots in the dark here.
    Try this, start in safe mode and see if it will go. Power it off, power it on holding the shift key, continue to hold the key till you see a progress BAR, then release and see if it will finish booting. If it does login see if thigs work, then log out and try booting normally. (NOTE that this takes considerably longer,be patient)
    Another thing you can try is powering it up holding the OPTION key and see if the start up manager brings your HD up on the screen, if it does click on that and see.

    It would be nice if you could include a kernel panic log to verify that your problem is...
    Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
    If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
    Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
             com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
    Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
    So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton
