Why is my Mac Pro G5 not working

So I have my mac pro and I was using it, then I Shut it down for a while, next time I try to use it a red light comes on inside and the power light flashes twice about every five seconds. I have tried re-seating the ram and pushing the reset switch and still nothing happened. I even went out and bought some new ram so I took the old ram out and put the new ram in, still no change. If there are any suggestions please tell me but I do not need to know how to take my hard drive out or anything, I already know how to do that. It is also very loud and it doesn't make any chime or even a beep and I made sure that the speaker is plugged in. It is model a471 if that is any help.

Put the old RAM back in.
Make sure to install the RAM in size pairs, one of each in each inside slot working out.
As describbed here:
Power Mac G5: Memory Specifications and Requirements
After reinstalling the old RAM, first check that it still doesn't start.
if not, use a hair dryer to heat the logic board in the area between the RAM slots. Make the logic board HOT (about 1 minute of hair dryer on high) and then try starting the machine.
If the machine starts, you have just confirmed that the solder in the logic board is degrading. The solder connections of the memory controller and of the RAM slots are common failure points.
Reflow of the solder or board replacement is necessary for long term use.

  • Newest Mac Pro does NOT work with CC14 - Will Adobe address this or not?

I have a Mac Pro late 2013 - the "trash can" - and when I tried installing Premiere CC14, it crashed multiple times before even completing the program's initial bootup. I had to install CS6 just to get operable, though this does not help me open the CC14 projects I have inherited. I have a colleague who uses a $1.5K laptop, and it works logarithmically faster and better with CC14 than my $4K new Mac Pro.  I have all the Adobe permissions set to "Read/Write" and it shows absolutely no speed improvements over a much less expensive iMac.  The CUDA feature is worthless unless Adobe develops a way for it to take advantage of the hardware configuration of the Mac Pro... And I'm having a hard time finding anything resembling an official statement suggesting this is anywhere close to a reality.  I have many After Effects plug ins, and while yes: They are 3rd party plug ins, these are not just electives - They are part of my arsenal that my loyal clients have come to expect.
For 15 years I have used After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator, all 15 of them on a Mac. In all that time I have NEVER experienced this kind of vagueness, finger pointing, and dodgy avoidance.  There seems to be an allergy to making an announcement that anything resembling a coordinated effort is going to happen.
Why would I buy "the fastest" Mac if Adobe didn't work with it?  MAC STORE staff didn't seem to think this was going to be an issue... Yet I can't find any official date as to when CC14 is projected to work with AMD architecture.
I'm feeling a lot like I did when Mac juked us with FCP-7 to FCP-X "upgrade.'   Et tu, Adobe?

No offense meant, but did you come here to ask for help, or are you just complaining?  Because it seems an awful lot like the latter...

So does CC2014 work on your Mac Pro or not?  The laptop doesn't "work logarithmically faster..." than your Mac Pro if the software isn't working to begin with.  Hyperbole, much?
The CUDA feature is worthless unless Adobe develops a way for it to take advantage of the hardware configuration of the Mac Pro...
CUDA isn't available on the new Mac Pro.  OpenCL is.  If you have the CUDA preference panel installed due to another piece of software putting it there, you're better served by deleting it.  It's not going to help you at all on the new Mac.  It may, in fact, cause problems.
Pr CC2014 works fine with OpenCL on the new Mac.  Ae doesn't, but Adobe has never said Ae does or would.  Anything you do in Ae is going to be CPU-bound.  If Pr is crashing, then it likely means you have something else on your system that's mucking things up.  Did you recover your user directory with something like Time Machine when you installed your new Mac?  Was your user directory originally on some other Mac?  What happens if you create an entirely new user from scratch, without restoring the home directory, and then try to kick Pr into gear?  Does it run?
Provide some details and perhaps someone can help.

  • Getting Asus ATI 4870 to work in my Mac Pro. Not working. please help!

I read here on these boards that an ATI 4870 would work in an early model (in my case, 2006) Intel Mac Pro.
I jumped in hastily and bought the Asus branded card: EAH4870
I connected it, and nothing... did not work.
I do not think it is a Mac version of this card, perhaps intended to be used in a windows machine.
    Questions:
    - Do I need to "flash: this card to make it work in my Mac Pro OSX 10.6.3?
    - Are there Mac drivers for this card? I can't find anything anywhere
    - Basically, can I get this card to work, or do I need to PAY the extra $$$$ just to have a "Mac" version of this.
Keep in mind, I am not a techie, I need to do Work, not fiddle with this kind of stuff.. unfortunately, a software package crucial for a job is very finicky and works with only a handful of cards.. The 4870 is one of them.
I do not have dual boot, and no windows machines to "flash" or rework this card.
If you can help me to get this card to work, it would be MOST appreciated!!!

It is not a Mac version. It does not have the required EFI boot ROM needed to work on the Mac. Video drivers are contained in OS X. Either you have to have the card flashed (this is illegal) or buy a Mac version of the card.
If you aren't a "techie" then you don't have the hardware needed to flash the ROM nor know how. Because this site belongs to Apple we cannot help you with something that is illegal.

  • Mac Pro FireWire not working at all

    Hey guys,
I'm pretty desperate right now. My brand new Mac Pro (two days old) has suddenly stopped noticing firewire devices. I tried to troubleshoot everything and nothing was working so I just finished erasing and reinstalling OS X on the main hard drive. That didn't help. If I go into the System Profiler, and click on firewire, it takes a few seconds, and shows absolutely nothing, even though about 4 devices are plugged in (FW400, FW800) Even though they are on, even disk utility does not show them. They are basically invisible and unaccessable. Please, anyone who knows what I can do, let me know. I reset the SMC, I reset the PRAM, I've tried all I could think of, and now I am on a ten minute old install of OS X. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried running the hardware test? Put in your main system DVD, restart and hold down "D" until you get the icon. Let it run some tests to see if anything comes up bad.
It's rare, but it's not impossible you have a bum controller in there. I hope you get it running. That thing is FAST!
    Good luck.

  • HT3964 Resetting the smc for my Mac pro does not work...the power still does not turn on....any suggestions?

I am unable to power up my Mac pro desktop. I have tried resenting the smc and still does not work...any suggestions?

The warranty is worldwide. You should not need your receipt, Apple will have a purchase record - or at least a manufacturing date record and you should not be even close to the end of the one year warranty.

  • Mac Pro (SCREEN NOT WORKING)

    Hi,
When i start mine mac pro, i hear the boooing sound, the fans are working too.
But only there is nothing appearing on the screen, SOMTIMES THE SCREEN WORKS AND SOMETIMES NOT  ... i'm using a VGA>DVI connector for it mine model is :
    Mac Pro  (2008)
    2.8GHz Xeon (Quad-core)
    2GB PC2-6400 DIMM
    32GB
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
    320GB 7200RPM SATA 3.5"
    Model number: A1186
    Anybody?
    thanks in advance !!
    greetz jagjit

The Analog VGA signal is generated by the graphics card, directly into the pins at the end of the DVI-I port on the computer. All the adapter does is shuffle the signals to get them onto the correct pins on the DB-15 (three-row) connector.
So as long as all the connections are good and no pins are bent, the display card itself (or possibly the display) is the most likely failure.
The Apple-firmware 5770 is a good replacement card for ALL models of Mac Pro. Accelerated operation requires 10.6.5 or later, so you would need to upgrade your Mac OS X version.
The other question is, how attached are you to that old VGA monitor? Are you sure it is still working correctly? How about a new digital display with better picture quality and higher resolution??

  • Mac Pro audio not working!

    adudio output not working...

Hmm, does audio play outside of logic when your audio device is set to the built-in output and not the Line?
Logic hooks into CoreAudio completely differently to any other audio program, it doesnt really interface with your sound drivers, it IS your sound drivers seeing as the core of Logic is also what Macs use to mix audio from other sources. When you say your volume control up in the top corner doesnt make a difference, the usual reason is that the device assigned to output audio from your Mac in general is not the same device that Logic is sending audio to.
This makes me wonder what your Audio settings look like in Logic right now, compared to on your AM settings. If you could post a screenshot that would be really helpful.

  • Bought new mac pro, does not work with sims 3.

I bought a mac pro 13" today with 2,4 Ghrz, 4 GB RAM. I bought sims 3 pets and installed it. But I can't play it properly. All the settings are on low, and there are no details. When I set it on high my sims flashes, and the game goes slowly. What can be the problem??

  • Why does my Macbook pro 1226 not work with my new Apple USB Superdrive? USB works otherwise but when I connected my new drive it clicks and then thats it. I put the DVD in but it doesn't grab it or attempt to access it at all.

    Hi Everone,
I purchased my 2007 Macbook pro 1226 online for a song and other than this annoyance i've been very satisfied. But lately i'm missing the use of my internal super drive to view DVD's (Always seem to miss what we don't have Grrr). So I figured I would purchase a brand new USB Apple Superdrive, problem solved right? NOPE. Now I've found that my pro doesnt seem to like it one bit and all USB's work fine so it's not that.
I will be disapointed if this can not be resolved, My Macbook is otherwise perfect and better than any new PC I've ever had.
Can Someone try and help me please?

I do know that for new MBPs there is a no questions asked return policy if returned within 14 days of purchase.  I am not certain if that applies for peripherals.  If you have not damaged it, I would think that the odds are on your side if you return it for a refund.  Obviously you have a good reason for the return.
Then it may be a good reason to purchase a new MBP.    In any event, call the store and ask.
    Ciao.

  • FireWire 800 ports on 12-Core Mac Pro are not working

Just got this machine, suddenly the firewire 800 ports don't work.
    Says: FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.

If it says that with no devices plugged in, it needs to go back to the store for a visit or exchange.
If it only says that with your devices plugged in, I would be more suspicious of the devices than the Mac. But it could be either, so you need some other known-good stuff to make progress.

16 mo young Mac Pro will not turn on. Dead. Why. No problems ever! Installed Yosemite and did not boot up after. Did that kill it? To young to die. What happened?what do I do now??????? Help!

Note that you don't have a Mac Pro as stated. Your profile says you have a MacBook Pro. Please clarify as they are entirely different computers. If nothing below works for you, then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I've installed Mavericks on my Mac Pro. It works well, generally, but will not stay sleeping! Pressing the power button twice sometimes extends the sleep mode but even that seldom results in a full overnight sleep.  File sharing off. What else can help?

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)
    Expansion cards (see below)
Additional drives, such as USB, FireWire, DVD, or CD drives (see below)

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.
