Why is my Mac running slowly

Can anyone tell me why my computer is so slow.  Even typing suddenly stops on the screen.  Its a Mac OSX desktop.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Mac running slowly with Lion.

My Mac has been running slowly with Lion. Its a 2008 20inch iMac. Its been a fabulous machine and I love it but since running Lion is has been slow and unresponsive, and I really want this sorted. I have read a few places about doing clean installs, but this sounds risky and complex? Can anyone help me make this the awesome machine that it once was?
    Happy Days
    Stuart

If you have only the minimum required ram installed to run Lion (2gb), that may be why.  4gb is best.  Clean installs aren't risky and complex as long as you have a backup of your data.  A clean install would involve first erasing your hdd via disc utility, powering down, then powering on while holding down the option key (same as holding command+r, but one less key to hold) to get you into Lion recovery.  Install Lion, and it will look as if you just bought the machine new.  Then, you would need to selectivley restore items from a backup (if you do a normal install by just restoring everything from your backup, you will have defeated the purpose of a clean install in my mind).  You will also need disc 2 that came with your mac to reinstall GarageBand, iWeb, iDVD, and iPhoto or else you will lose.  There are plenty of tutorials online and many experienced people here who can walk you through it.  May, sound intimidating, but it can be done if you can follow directions (they aren't complicated)

  • MAC RUNNING SLOWLY, MAC RUNNING SLOWLY

Have always downloaded latest updates so why is my Mac Book Pro running slowly & it sounds like it's runnin all the time...
    Running 10.6.8
    Hope someone can help me

Have you looked to see how much free memory there is?  If memory is low then the machine will spend lot's of time swapping memory to disk.  Open the program "Activity Monitor" (in "Applications/Utilities/"):
Then click the "System Memory" segment at the bottom:

  • Why is my Mac running so slow?

I have a Mac book late 2010 and it has 4 gb of ram. I got mountain lion and now every thing is slow like Turning on takes 1:30 to get to the log on screen. Loging in takes 30 sec opening any programs takes 30+ secs. Do you know why this is the case? I have never cleaned up the computer besides emptying the trash. Is there other maintenance I need to be doing? Also I'm not sure if there is a defrag tool in osx? I'm assuming not? Can you guys help me figure out what is wrong?

Please list what you have done to diagnos this problem.  You could have missed an item in the list.
    The three top candidates:
    1) not enough memory. Seems not to be the problem.
    2) hd issues.  Run disk utility -- verify disk & correct permissions
    3) Some app is running away with processors.
Run activity monitor. Look for a process that is taking up lots of time.
    be sure to
    -- list all processes
-- click on cpu tab.  with high to low
    -- memory usage.
    post picture here.

  • Has anyone else had issues with their Mac running slowly after installing Mavericks?

Ever since I installed Mavericks, my MacBook is running waaaaay slower. One of my favorite things about Macs has always been how fast they boot up, but ever since Mavericks, mine takes forever. A lot of programs like GarageBand and Premiere Pro are also running really slowly. They used to work great. Anyone else having this same issue?

The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

    Hello & Welcome!
    FIrst,
Completely uninstall ALL Google software per the instructions on Google's website. Currently, all Google apps, especially Google Chrome AND Drive are not playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks. Until Google releases an "official" fix or update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall all Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox. Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently.
You you have too many user startup/login items in your startup list. Having this many apps launching and running in the background can really cause a performance hit on your Mac.
You REALLY NEED to examine which items you truly need have absolutely have launch and run at Mac startup and/or login.
    Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied.
You may need to, ACTUALLY, go to the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins, extensions and add-ons as needed, also.
Also, if you have any connected, third party devices, like non-Apple keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to go to each device maker's website and update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions, if available and applicable.
    Good Luck!

  • Why is my mac running slow after MOuntain Lion update??

after i updated my Mac Book it starts to browse very slow..why????

It doesn't sound like it, but you might try adding a different DNS server.
In Network System prefs, select the network service you use (ethernet or WiFi).
    Click on Advanced.
    Click on DNS tab.
    Click the + button
    Enter these numbers:
    For OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
    Or Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

    Not much help.
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
What version of OS X is your iMac running?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?
Have you downloaded and installed any thing recently off of the Internet that might be responsible for your iMac's slowdown.

  • SLOW MAC: Why does my mac run faster during the "erase free space" operation?

    Hi community!
So I've been using my Macbook Pro Late 2012 edition for just over a year and a half now, and to no surprise, I find the spinning beachball whirling away more often than I'd care to see it. So I start a full mac clean-up including deleting login items, using Appzapper to clear up my apps, using Onyx to clear up some cache elements, deleting unused files and freeing up hard drive space.
I've successfully cleared over 60% of disk space, (200GB used, 300GB free), but I find a recurring problem persisting, despite my best efforts to get rid of it. You see, every few seconds, the spinning beach ball appears and freezes up my entire desktop no matter what I'm doing. Trying even the simplest things, like opening the apps in the dock or right clicking a file takes ages, movies freeze up all the time, regardless of what app plays them, finder is slow and it has nothing to do with my ram usage (I use the app FreeMemory to check in real-time how much I'm using) or my CPU usage (Activity monitor open at all times). It has to be the drive.
So then I tried running ClamXav, and found a windows trojan, which I deleted manually, but no change.
Now, during all these stages I was regularly running erase free space opeartions (Fast x1), and noticed something curious: during the operation, my problem disappears. I still get occasional loading beach balls, and ocassional jumps in movies, but other than that, I can use my mac normally again.
So now, I'm constantly running erase free space operations and it's painfully annoying to say the least.
I've tried defragging, to no avail.
I had the problem on Mountain Lion, and upgraded to Mavericks thinking that could change it (by the way it took 18 hours to install mavericks, don't know if that's related).
In other words, I need your help. Does anybody know if I've no choice but to buy an external hardrive, backup my data, and erase my entire homedrive? Can this situation still be salvaged?
    Thanks!

  • The honeymoon is over. why is my mac running like a pc???

So its been a little over a year since I've made the switch, and out of nowhere im constantly feeling the same urge to throw my powerbook out the window like i did with my old pc. Programs are constantly locking up, spinning circle, im always required to hard reboot as the system just doesnt respond. Is there anything I can do to get my machine running normal again?

    Also david_s
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available.
You haven't posted any information as to how you use the Mac, what applications are causing problems, what you may have installed, changed, upgraded or updated, type and number of periperals attached, etc.
My crystal ball is on the fritz!

  • Why is my Safari running slowly?

In recent months my Safari has been getting slower-it now takes five or ten seconds for my favorite web sites to open.  Firefox opens them instantly, so it must be Safari.  I've been told to remove the cache (but using a 3d party, like MacKeeper); remove plugins (how do I know which ones to remove?); reset Safari (how, and what data will I lose?), etc.  Which, if any, of these, or other actions, should I safely take, and how?  Thanks!

It is a good idea to include the machine type and OS version in your problem posts.
What disk capacity have you? How much is free? How much RAM have you? What applications are you running?

  • Why is Elements 11 running slowly under Windows 8?

I got a new pc with Windows 8.  All the specs are better than my old one.  But PSE 11 runs MUCH slower than on the old one.  Costco Support suggested I look for an update to PSE 11 to run under Windows 8.  My PSE is ver 11.0.0.0 but it says it is up to date.  Any suggestions?

The Wacom drivers were up to date but the graphics card did need a new update and that really helped a lot.  I also turned off the Win 7 "ripple effect" that is standard with the Wacom.  It was annoying and I think it also caused a little slow down.
    Thank you!

  • Mac running slowly on new internet connection.

We upgraded our internet bandwith today and got a new modem. The pc's and ipad are working well and are faster. Our Mac laptop is barely working on the internet now and is almost useless. Any idea on how we can fix this?

    Reboot your router and modem.
Or, it may be time for a new router.
We had problems (disconnects with iPhones, iPads, Apple TV and a new 13 inch Retina MBP) with a 6-year old high end router and solved all our problems by getting a new 6th-gen Apple AirPort Extreme.

  • Why is my CS6 running slowly?

I have a brand new desktop computer that I just had built for me.  PSCS-6, Windows 7, 64 bit, 8Gb of Ram.  When I am using ACR, I find that there is a lag in response on just about every task.  I am also using a brand new Wacom Intuos 4.   The little blue circle (timer) shows up very frequently when I am adjusting exposure, highlights, saturation, etc.  This does NOT happen on my laptop that only has 3Gb of RAM (Win 7 64 bit).
Do I have something set incorrectly?  I expected sheer speed and this is dissapointing to me.
