Do an SMC reset, which can fix problems with the system randomly shutting down:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Why does my Mac shut down when using Safari?

Every once in a while (randomly) my mac will reboot due to an error even when I only have the Safari Application open. How can I stop my mac from doing this. I have the 2011 macbook pro 13 inch with the latest OS (Mountain Lion). Everything is up to date but why does it keep shutting down?

Hi Sebaz, first try repairing permissions. Go to Applications-->Utilities-->select Disk Utility. Select your drive then select the First Aid button then  at the bottom right click Verify Disk and after it verifies your drive click on Verify Disk Permissions on the left. If there any errors click on Repair Disk Permission. Reboot your machine and test your Safari to see if the issue comes back.

  • Why is my mac shuts down suddenly

My mac shuts down suddenly, i have to press any botton in oder to turn on, and if I stop messing with the mac it will shutdown. Any advice??

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I-Mac shuts down after sitting for a while, why and how can it be fixed?

i Mac shuts down when left for a time in sleep mode. Am I missing something or is this supposed to happen?
It has never happened while anyone is using the computer but that may just be because it often sits over night without use.
Am using a logitech Wave USB keyboard and mouse because my wife likes it.

OK reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
and check all of the power connections.
The iMac's are sensitive to power issues (sag or momentary outage) while in sleep mode. If in the Energy Saver preference "Start up automatically after a power failure" is unchecked (as it should be) then you could/would/should find the iMac off after a power problem.

  • Why won't my Mac shut down?

I've got a Quicksilver G4, 867MHz, 1.25GB RAM, Tiger 10.4.11 at home that just won't shut down. My wife and I share this computer; she has her log in, I have mine. The problem started over a month ago. At that time the G4 had a very difficult time starting - the gray screen, Apple logo and spinning wheel would stay on the screen for up to 4 minutes, then the computer would shut itself off. Three tries and it would finally start up. I ran utilities from the OS disk, ran Tech Tool Pro, ran Disk Warrior, ran Onyx; I did everything I could to clean up the system. It sort of worked - the machine would at least start (although slowly), run (slowly) and shut down normally (occasionally). I decided to reload the operating system along with all the updates. For the first few days after reloading the OS it started, ran and shut down normally. It now starts normally, runs OK, but will not shut down. When prompted to shut down everything on the desktop disappears except the wallpaper. The machine just sits with the wallpaper on the screen for as long as we let it go without forcing a shut down with the power key. What's the solution?
Thanks in advance to all who can help me.
    Jon

  • Mac shuts down when 90% POWER and its PLUGGED IN!

I recently took over my husbands mac pro OS 10.4.11. At first, all was going well. Then I noticed one day, it shut down on me and I was like, that's weird, I had no warning. I did see other postings about this so it must be common or an issue with the battery. The thing is, its plugged in 100% of the time when I use it...if I do not have it plugged in, well, it shuts down after about 5mins...if that. I am not sure what is going on. Does anyone know (if it is the battery), roughly what a fix like this would cost? I read on other posts that you need the battery info, etc....this is what my mac says: Anyone have any idea just looking at this?? I greatly appreciate it!!!!!

Actually, it just shuts right off, even being plugged in. For instance, it has been plugged in all day and my battery icon (at the top right) shows 98%...but the power cord (normally green light shows, is orange)...it just shut off on me about 5mins ago again. No warning, no programs saying they will close, just went black. No hibernation, etc...I had to push the "on" button to get it back on...It's so frustrating. Almost like it has had enough and goes off or like it's dying....So even though the battery shows fully charged, it still just shuts off....and I can be in the middle of typing or web surfing, etc...it doesn't happen when I just have it on but not using it (like a power saving thing)..it shuts off even when it is actually being used. I have no clue what to do.
Thanks so much for trying to help me out. I really appreciate it!

  • Mac shuts down? Already updated firmware.

My MacBook has been fine since I bought it in May 2007. However, today I had left my MacBook on and plugged in, while a read a book. I turned to my MacBook, and Firefox had shut down. I wasn't sure why, but I just opened it back up. I left my MacBook again, positive I left it on, and when I came back, it (my Mac) was off. This happened twice today. Maybe it's Firefox, it was open both times my computer shut down, but I haven't updated it, or my Mac today or yesterday.
I'll update this post as needed.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I never saw my Mac shut down. I am almost positive I left it on though.

Is it plugged in when you do this or running on battery? What firmware update are you talking about?
Check and see if you have battery update 1.3 installed. You should find it at the location listed. Right click on the bundle and check *Get Info* a window will open and you can check the version there.
    MacBook/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
Leopard(10.5.1) and Tiger(10.4.11) installs it. It is the MacBook Pro update.
If it is 1.3 drag it to the trash and then reboot. After you reboot you will be able to empty the trash. Once you have done that run software update and it should install Battery Update 1.2. You should reset the SMC (System Management Controller) after doing this.

  • Repair permissions runs then Mac shuts down

I have installed ilife 09 and since doing so my iphoto will not stay open. Also iphoto only displays about 10 photos of a possible 500. On another post I was told to run "repair permissions" in an effort to resolve this problem. While repair permissions runs my mac shuts off. Any clue as to what is happening?

Look in console to see why it is shutting down - I'm going go guess overheating - if so try cleaning your air vents to assure unobstructed air flow to the interior of the computer

  • My mac shut down when trying to download Combined Mac OS X- update

I recently bought Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.3, after installing the software I have also updated the software updates from my apple menu.
The Combined Mac OS X update 10.6.8 is the only update that will not download and my mac shut down my mac when its halfway downloaded. I notice that my mac/processor got extremely hot, so I thought this is the reason why the mac shut down. But even my mac is cold when I start, it still shut down half way in the downloading process and today the mac was also hot, but not as hot as last time as I started when it had not been in use.
Why is this happening? is it because the processor gets to hot or is it that my mac cannot download this?
I have even tried putting the mac in the window so it gets cold air, even near the freezer, it helps thew mac not getting too hot, but it still shut down, so I start to wonder if its something wrong other than its too hot??
What can I do? because I read that this download is recommended for all who has Snow Leopard and its necessary for the mac to be ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion.
My mac did not get so fast hot when I used Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.9/10.4.11

Ok that is good to hear though. I followed your link and first I got this message twice : "activation failed ". I tried again third time after filling up more quota to use and I thought it was going to be finish downloading, I am so disappointed my mac shut down only 4 minutes before it would be totally finish. Only a minute and it would be finish. I just have to try again.
I wonder something that worries me, every time a download fail does this mean I am wasting my quota I have paid for? does the quota goes in the trash so I have to buy more and more quota?
How can I know how much quota I have left to use, so I can be safe downloading without worrying buying more quota? is there a way to know this?
Is quota the same as disk space available?
