Why is my MacBook get slow?

Hi everyone!,
I'm using a MacBook for couples of months and I just notice few day back onwards my MacBook is little bit slow.
When it's star it take some time as well as it shutdown. Im a new one for Mac OS so I don't know how to speed up. I know in Windows there is a way to speed up the OS by Disk cleanup, Defragment,..
Is there any thing similar in to those or more advance than those in Mac OS?
Please let me know how to increase the performance in Mac OS.
Thank you.

Some considerations ... first, how much free disk space do you have? You need to keep 10% to 15% or more free for systems usage. Less than that really slows the system down.
To speed up your startup, go into system preferences and your account, and look at login items. The longer that list is the longer startup will take. You may not really need everything that's loaded at startup.
Click the Apple on your menu bar and look at how much memory it shows. Is that what it should show? If a memory card has failed, you'd be running in less memory which could slow things down.
You can always run a disk maintenance routine like OnyX, which can help performance on older machines, however, with yours just being a few months old, I wouldn't expect big benefits, but you could certainly try it. It's available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html . It's always a good idea to have a hard drive backup before using any disk maintenance software.
You could also run the Apple hardware test, just to see if it tells you about any hardware issues, which could affect startup/shutdown time.

Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

I am having the same issue. I hook it up to the charger in the evening and close the lid. When I go to use it the next time it takes a good 30 seconds or so to wake up. The screen shows the log in screen but typing doesn't work and the cursor is frozen. Sometimes it will even give the rainbow wheel for the cursor, so it seem like it is processing whatever to get going. I also notice that my battery won't be fully charged at anywhere from 95%-99% after being charged a full evening. What can I do to change whatever is happening because it is pretty crappy to charge it all night expecting to have a full battery for the next use, plus the issue of having to sit there waiting for it to boot every time.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slow? Beach ball

Boy, I was looking at a discussion of this from TODAY, about a half hour ago, and now can't find it.
"Why is my MacBook Pro slow?" brings "screen tearing issue" and other things not related to my problem.
I got and ran Easyfind, and got rid of MacKeeper.
What else do I need to do?
I have the beach ball way too often.
I just made an iMovie, but optimizing it for YouTube is impossible.  Boxes keep getting grayed out; complete hangup.
    Can easyfind help further?
    Thank you.

    Hi Tomo 2,
Kim Komando said get Sophos, so I did.  I see it found something called Bredo-K on Nov. 22.
It's now scanning my OVER 5 MILLION FILES.  Seriously, I don't think I need that many.
Right now about 50% of CPU idle,
    about 1.03 GB Ram free.
Sophos is using about 90% of whatever.
This scanning could take all weekend.  I need to get rid of some stuff.  Hard to know what, though.
    Thanks for any more ideas.

  • Why is my Macbook so slow to open?

Why is my MacBook so slow to start up? I've recently cleared more space on the start-up disk (currently has 49GB of the 74GB capacity), but it still takes about 2 minutes to start up from cold. Any suggestions?

    Hi Stevie,
several thing could caused that, like a lot of application that need to be opened during start up, your default boot up destination is not your internal HD (so it will try to look to optical first, "clogged HD", etc.
Try to optimize and repair permission in your macbook HD using ONYX or MAcHelpMate,
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/machelpmate.html
    Try to reset PRAM:

Open system preference: account : Login item and uncheck application that you don't want to start automatically.
    Good Luck

  • Why is my MacBook really slow since uploading Yosemite

Why is my MacBook really slow since installing Yosemite?

If you have less than 4 GB of memory (not 8 GB) as shown in the About This Mac window, Yosemite won't perform well. Otherwise, see below.
When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Why are my MacBooks so slow on the network when everything else is fast?

Last month, my apartment complex changed its network from a pretty wide open Wi-Fi to one where we must enter a user name and password every 30 days for each machine.  Since then, both my MacBooks (2012 MBP running 10.8.3 and 2008 white MB running 10.7.5) have very slow connections.  Web pages will fail to load, or load incredibly slowly (as in the progress bar moves an inch then stops).  We get bursts of activity (as also seen in Activity Monitor) lasting for seconds (limited to 4mbps down/0.2mbps up by the new ISP).  This occurs on both Safari and Firefox.  iTunes music store, the Mac App store, Mail, and Spotify all exhibit identical behavior.  My iPad, iPhone, and another's Windows netbook connect without any obvious difficulty.  We had a rep from the new ISP come to check out our connection, and he believes that the problem is directly related to the MacBooks (a virus on both?).
Things I've tried without change in behavior (with the 2012 MBP):
    1.  Connecting directly to ethernet (and turning off AirPort).
    2.  Restarting the computer and the router.
    3.  Logging in elsewhere in the complex
    4.  Changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    5.  Deleting AirPort and re-installing in System Prefs
    6.  Following the excellent "Step by Step to Fix Your Mac" https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353 on these forums, including clearing every cache imaginable with Onyx, and uninstalling Java, Silverlight, Flash, and any System Pref plugins.
    7.  Sorting through Activity Monitor to find anything else running on my CPU of consquence--I don't think so.
    8.  Confirming good ping and down/up speeds on Speedtest.net with my iPhone
I know little about networking, but I'm learning.  Any other suggestions?  Why does the MacBook behave differently on this network?

    bowsplash wrote:
Thank you for the suggestions.  I agree that my ISP rep looked a little confused by my problem.  He was comfortable using Terminal (at least for basic network queries--more than I know how to do).
Although I physically have the ISP's router in my apartment, the ISP has changed the password, and I'm unable to change channels (though that shouldn't explain the peristent problem on ethernet).  I've tried restarting it many times, including unplugging it.
I just emptied my trash (and restarted the computer).  500gb HD, 24gb free. No change in performance.
You're running out of HD space.  That's the problem.
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • Why is my Macbook still slow even after upgrading

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this has been answered before but here goes.
So I have a Macbook 2.4GHz (13.3-inch Intel Core 2 Duo "Penryn") - Early 2008. Have been using it for the past 6 years without any issues. However during the past 1 year I've noticed that it has started to run slower and slower. Even simple task such as opening Safari might take longer than usual. I do not have much application installed as I only used that computer for surfing the net and making Words & spreadsheet documents. I have about 200GB of free hard disk space out of the 250GB standard HDD along with 2 GB of ram. After doing some research around the forum, I decided it might be a good idea to upgrade the HDD to a faster 7200rpm 750GB HDD drive as well as replacing the ram with new 2x2GB modules. I also did a fresh install of OS X Mountain Lion 10.6.8 (I did not install any other applications). But to no avail, it seems that the computer is still laggy and isn't as snappy as couple of years back. And by laggy I mean that opening pre-installed applications on the Mac such as iPhoto and Safari might still take 4-6 "icon bounces" to open.
    So my question is,
    1) What might still be causing the lag?
    2) Are there any other components on a Macbook that might cause it to slow down?
    3) Does components like the CPU degrade over time?
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Your computer isn't getting slower, it's other things demanding faster.  If you are installing all the possible updates to software those will be designed for newer computers.  Once you start browsing you're browsing a web designed by people who because they spend all their time designing pages they themselves have powerful machines with fast connections because it is their job.  It's like if all city streets were designed by racecar drivers.  A 2008 computer is already considered vintage by Apple and close to no longer being supported in any manner.  Vintage and obsolete products - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1752  I have an even older computer than you and it is annoying but that's the way things are.
Frankly 4-6 icon bounces doesn't sound long to me.  Don't forget that for applications such as iTunes how long it takes to open will also depend upon the size of the library.
I don't think CPUs wear down.  Conceivably some slow-down could be the result of excessive bad sectors on a hard drive but you say you replaced that (and I would expect it to have shown more serious symptoms were that happening).
You can use Activity monitor to check your RAM usage.  Newer applications and newer OS versions will require much more RAM than posted "minimum"  If a computer doesn't have enough RAM it starts using the hard drive which is slower than chips.

  • Why is my macbook so slow despite having space?

I am not sure why my 8GB macbook pro is so slow. When I checked storage details, these were being displayed:
    Adobe Flash Player Installer:
      Available:          5.9 MB (5,906,432 bytes)
      Capacity:          7.3 MB (7,307,264 bytes)

      Capacity:          499.25 GB (499,248,103,424 bytes)
Seems to me that I have more than enough space but browsing the internet now drives me crazy becos of the slowness. Any solution on this? Thanks!

  • Why the pre view gets slow?

    Hello.
I'm using Premiere CS6 in my laptop:
Processor: 2,8 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.2
It used to work fine. But recently started to get slow, and is almost impossible to use the pre-view when Editing.
Do you think is a computer problem? Would it help to upgrate the memory Ram? Or is the video pre view related with the Processor? Or should I just try to install again the software?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Why do RAM previews get slower towards end of comp?

I was just wondering, why do RAM previews and even updates in the comp. monitor when playing with effects get slower as you get deeper into the comp.? When i first begin a comp everything is extremely fast but  when 2 to 3 minutes of the comp is completed everything slows down and each frame takes like 4 or 5 seconds to load. Do you think it's a matter of RAM?

No. Whatever issues you have are specific to your setup like calculations on effects accumulating or multiplying. This can easily happen with particle effects or temporal effects like Timewarp - the later the time in the comp, the more particles or frames have to be processed. You have not provided any relevant info, anyway, so there is not much point to making generic claims based on such vague and incomplete info. We know nothing about your system or even what version of AE you use, so aprdon me, this is pointless.

My macbook only has 29 mb used up so far and today i had downloaded "tiny umbrella" to help me restore my iPad or whatever but then i didn't really know how to do it as it was asking for installment of java so i just didn't go further and went ahead deleted whatever i had download and installed. but then right after i had done that my laptop was getting really slow. at first i thought it was the internet connection but it wasn't. so i've tried the deleting some things off my computer to looking at the CPU and delete somethings but then its still the same. i turned off laptop and waited 2-3 hours and turn back on, but still same results. so i want to know what i did wrong and how to fix. i regret downloading something i didn't know, but now i need help… thank you. Also i did updated my laptop today too but then its also asking if i wanna upgrade to OX S Mavericks, but i haven't so does that have anything to do with the slowness cause Apple wants me to upgrade?
