Why is my macbook pro extremely hot after Lion install

After successfully intalling Lion, my mac book pro is getting very hot.

Issues may be not limited to animations.
Try uninstalling Flash then whenever playback of Flash content is critical:
drag the icon of the page (to the left of its address)
from the toolbar of Safari
to the Dock icon for Google Chrome, where the player is integral (and bugged in the ways outlined above) .
Some technical detail of what's new in Lion is alrady published:

My uneducated guess is that some of the cooling and/or load — maybe not demonstrable by Activity Monitor — is GPU-related, something to do with tightened integration between OpenCL and Grand Central Dispatch.
Incidentally I'm currently not convinced that iStat Menus 3.18 (3.18) offers a suitably comprehensive guide to the gamut of things that Apple does with 10.7 (Build 11A511).

  • Why is my MacBook Pro running hot after mountain lion upgrade?

The fan is on high all the time and the system is running very hot. It also consumes the battery way faster than it used to.

Thanks for your links.  My MacBook fan was running constantly from switch on and the underside was getting very hot.  Using your first link, I followed the Activity Monitor instructions and found that Dashboard was using '117%'.  As soon as I closed it down the fan instantly slowed and after only a few seconds switched off..
    Thanks again..

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • Why does my macbook pro get hot

Why does my Macbook pro get hot while I am only on my email account?  This is a recent change.  It gets too hot too put in my lap.  Is it a battery issue.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Spotlight may be indexing your drive(s).  Click the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar; if it shows things being indexed, that's at least some of the reason.

Why is my macbook pro running so slow after os x yosemite upgrade

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • MacBook Pro running hot after Mt. Lion upgrade

MacBook Pro mid-2009 2.53 with 8GB RAM and 750GB 7200 rpm harddrive: CPU seems to be running much hotter (>70 degrees C) and fan is the normal 2000 rpm per iStat after upgrading to Mt. • MacBook pro extremely slow after upgrade to Yosemite

after upgrade of MacBook pro to Yosemite everything runs extremely slow. Apps Internet everything. Any fixes for this?  I read email chains back from October.  Anything more current?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

  • MacBook Pro running hot after upgrade

    Hey everyone,
First off: Upgraded to Mountain Lion and I absolutely love it. I'm running on a December 2011 MacBook Pro Unibody 15", 8 Gigs ram, i7, SSD 256 drive (Apple). It had Lion installed when it came, obviously.
Now that I upgraded to Mountain Lion, it's running several degrees celcius hotter than before, after a couple of hours of using it. I figured I'd give it a few hours to do its search database thing etc...you know, let the system stuff in the background settle down, but it's still running very hot.
Is this something which eveyrone else has been experiencing? I've got two methods of checking the tempurature: iStat Nano on the Dashboard (which I don't use for anything else...) and smcFanControl which sits in my menu bar. Both give me the same tempurature and it's running literally about 5 to 7 degrees more (or sometimes even spiking at 15 degrees more for a few seconds) than before.
Just wondering if I'm the only one? Should I be patient and give it a day or so? Any tips?
    Thanks,
    Nat.

You're right that in the first few hours ML will be busy in the background running certain processes like indexing Spotlight and Time Machine.
You can see if these are still indexing by looking at the menu bar. Click on Spotlight - if you get a progress bar saying its indexing, just leave everthing alone till its finished. If you look at the TM icon, it should be slowly circling if TM is still indexing. Again, click on the icon and see what it says.
If these seem to have completed, check in Activity Monitor.app (Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app) as to what is using up %CPU time. If you see kernel_task is running wild (+80%) , try a PRAM reset. To do so, folllow this procedure:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should and with the kernel_task process back to normal.

  • Macbook Pro Extremely hot with NO cpu usage

I have a Macbook pro 15" (Mid-2010). Recently my mac is running extremly hot specially when connected to the AC power.
I'm using iStat Pro to monitor sensors, and while charging sometimes CPU reaches 101 degrees celsius. When I detach the power cord, it stays at about 80-85 degrees. My cpu usage is normal, about 1-4%. All the bottom of my mac feels hot, specially under the CPU, but the middle parts too. Fans are also working with highest speed.
Is it a known hardware problem?
Another problem which I've had around the same time, I use "Hardware Growler" to check for usb connections. When I connect a USB flash disk, sometimes it shows a lot of connections and disconnections for Keyboard, Trackpad, IR Remote and stuff. Pushing the usb around doesn't show the same symptom, so it's not a broken board or connector or something.
Have you seen a similar problem? What can I do?

I've solved my problem by resetting PRAM and SMC. I'm writing my solution here so others can try it if they have the same problems.
To reset PRAM, follow instructions in this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
and to reset SMC, follow this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I think my problem started when I upgraded Parallels Desktop to version 7 (from version 6). I'm not sure if it was the cause, but some kernel extension in parallels could've corrupted SMC and/or PRAM.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro very slow after installing Mountain Lion 10.8.5. - Solutions?

    Hello, hello
After waiting quite a while - I paid the relatively small amount, and got myselves a new OS.
But I am very disappointed of the speed - I see that this also was a problem with OS Lion?
Please assist me. Perhaps others have this problem as well?
    Some info:
    - 2,66 GHz Intel Core i7 processor
    - 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Also
    - Sometimes I run the Parallels Desktop 6 and 9 software, does this affect specs of the new OS?
Hope to hear from you guys.
    Sincerely,
    Harald

With only 4GB of RAM, how much do you have devoted to the virtual machine running under Parallels? Even if it's a small amount, it's going to make page outs and swaps used very high. From my perspective, 8GB of RAM is the 'sweet spot' for running Mountain Lion.
I'm assuming that you've a 15" mid-2010 MacBook Pro? If so, you can speed things up by installing the maximum 8GB of RAM. Go RAM shopping at Crucial or OWC.
Other than upgrading your RAM, the only thing that you can do to speed up your machine is to install a SSD. You can also check the SSDs at Crucial and OWC and decide if one is right for you.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro extremely slow

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro has recently began to run extremely slow. I have tried several clean up guides from you tube, but so far nothing has helped.
My battery is completely dead, so I only run with the charger connected.
I have done the etreecheck and here are the results:

    as well as this adware:

You can use either the manual method or download the app to do it for you:

Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
If your system is still sluggish after ridding your computer of these unwanted things, then consider installing additional RAM - 4 GB is considered the absolute minimum to run Yosemite.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro very sluggish after the Mountain Lion update?

It's quite frustrating being as this is my first Apple laptop. I figured that it would be easy to update these things.
I was using the prior OS and it worked just fine. Now my Macbook is just as slow as the HP laptop that I had to retire.
    I'm using OS X Version 10.8.1
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
