Why is my Macbook Pro getting so hot when I watch videos?

Yesterday, I bought an HDMI cable for my 2 year old Macbook Pro, and Samsung flat screen. I got this to watch HULU, now everytime I watch a video on Hulu, even if it's only less than a minute, but computer gets INSTANTLY hot! REALLY hot, don't ask me HOW hot, but WAY too hot for a computer, I have never had heating problems with this computer before.
I'm afraid to try and watch any more shows. What am I doing wrong? I really want to watch Hulu. On that note, I can't figure out how to get videos from my computer to play on my TV, but that's another matter.
I have no idea what operating system I have, just that it's a Snow Leopard.

What ever you do, DO NOT download any software that claims to 'clean' your MBP.
My suggestion is to upgrade your software.  I note you are at Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and 10.6.8 is available.
In addition do a bit of house cleaning on your HHD.  Trash old data that you don't use or no longer need.
Consider dusting off your original installation disks and perform an Apple hardware test using disk 2.  There may just be a hardware issue that you are not aware of (do this with all peripherals detached.
Ciao.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro get extremely hot doing simple things like surfing the web?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro. 4GB of ram 500GB HD. The last few months my mac has been getting extremely hot when I do simple things like listening to music or going on facebook etc. I have used accessories to cool it down, but it doesnt seem to work. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Might be that the vents are clogged and need a clean up. Depends on the environment it was used in (dust, smoke, etc).
Might also be that some piece of software is the culprit and not iTunes or Safari/Chrome/Firefox.
Run Activity Monitor and see which application(s) use abnormally high amount of processing power.

  • My macbook pro gets very hot when running anything like games or videos

I just bought a macbook pro 2.3 GHZ i7 with retina display.  It gets very hot when running just about anything of substance.  When I run a game like candy crush, the temperature can get to 167 or more.  I installed istat menus and started monitoring it.  I did notice that the fans never went on but after istats I was able to make them come on.  Without having a game going, the temperatures hover around 100.  Once the game starts, it goes crazy.
I don't really know what the problem could be or if this is normal (it really can't be....This is way too hot).  I have owned the computer for about 2 months and I need to know what to do.

  • MacBook Pro getting really hot when connected to a Thunderbolt display

    Hi everybody,
I had this problem since I can remember, when I connect my MBP to the Thunderbolt display the laptop is getting hot and the CPU-Fan is working preatty laud.
I had to turn radio on because it is quite anoying
    Here some technical data:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Serial Number  C0******V7L
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
    SDD: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III
I don't have any haevy programs running but, I think, also the load average is a bit high. In most cases around 2.0 But when it is not connected to the display it's not getting that hot.
Any idea what the problem may be? Or maybe it's jus normal?
    Regards,
    Radek

I'm seeing similar behavior when I disconnect my TBD. My Retina MBP doesn't go to sleep. I get to work an hour later and it is very hot to the touch.
I'm not seeing lots of people complaining, so I wonder if it's something weird I do. Do you have VMWare Fusion or XQuartz running when you try and sleep?

  • How do I stop my MacBook Pro getting so hot when running VMWare?

    I've a late 2011 MacBook Pro, i7, 8Gb.
It seems it doesn't take much to start the fans whirring - which has been the same since day one.
However, what really does send it into meltdown, is VMWare. I sometimes run Windows 7 on VMWare & am very concerned about the heat and noise generated.
I'm willing to take a hit on speed if there's a way to cool things down - any ideas?

    Hey there!! Same problem here..
__My MacBook pro will not stay off when i plug it in. When i attach the power adapter even when the screen is shut the start sound comes on and it powers up__(TAYLOR SAIDS)
The white sleep light flashes 6 times and start without sound start ...
For the second time makes reboot and then heard the sound start!!!!####

  • Why does my macbook pro get hot

Why does my Macbook pro get hot while I am only on my email account?  This is a recent change.  It gets too hot too put in my lap.  Is it a battery issue.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • My MacBook Pro gets really hot after I install OS X 10.10.3. Can Someone help?

After i install OS X 10.10.3 my macbook pro gets really hot. I don't know why. Someone has a solution?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My 13" MacBook pro gets really hot without extended or heavy usage

My 13" MacBook pro gets really hot without extended or heavy usage and the fan's noise is annoying, my friends say this is not normal
    Is it normal?
It gets really hot especially when there is flash content

I am also having what I feel are excessive temperatures and fans while doing nothing tasks like web browsing.
Can anyone tell me what the reasonable operating ranges are for the various components?
There is a program called "Tmperature Monitor" which is free and gives even more sensor readings than iStat Pro.
Why does flash make it so hot?  I have this problem too.
Also is it normal when connecting only one external display and just browsing the web for the GPU to be at 85-90C (194F)?
Any idea why iStat always shows a lower battery percentage than OSX?
    Thanks

this has never happend before and i am starting to get worried..

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

I can't seem to find the answer to this riddle . why does the iPhone 4 get really hot when you are making phone calls or when using face Time ??

    It doesn't.
There must be an issue with your iphone.
    Have you tried reset?  Restore?
Have you made an appointment at the genius bar to have them look at it?

  • My macbook pro get littel hot

my macbook pro get hot near to charging slot when charging its not extremely hot but its warm is this normal or do i need to call apple

now, for your fan control - you can download and install smcFanControl if you want to use it.
set it at default speed and when you feel your Macbook is getting warmer - click on the smcfancontrol icon and select higher.
the best thing to do is to check your activity monitor and see what's using more than 10% of your CPU's resources under All Processes and in the %CPU section.
highlight the one's over 10% and hit quit process.
good luck - hope you get it sorted out...
