Why is my Macbook Pro only running right when I am performing "repair disk permissions"

Greetings,
My mid 2012 macbook pro began running extremely slow.  I have performed all of the basic diagnostics from the help threads with no luck.  In the process, I noticed that when I perform the repair disc permissions feature in disc utility, the computer runs just fine.  When this process is complete, the computer is back to running slow.  Any idea what's going on?

Have you tried:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If that doesn't help much then try:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • What is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

what is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging?

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

  • Why is my MacBook Pro suddenly running as slow as syrup?

    Hello,
I read some of the replies to the other posts about MacBook pro suddenly running slowly, and I am about to try a repair and do a few other things, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me if my etrecheck.com details offer a hint as to why it's running so slowly. I have pasted them below.
    A few things to note:
    1. I have since turned off Time Machine backup on this computer, and I am just about to uninstall the app BackTrack and all the LogMeIn crap.
    2. I repair permissions on this machine at least twice a month, sometimes more often.
    2. For the past month or so, my computer has been making this desperate sounding single beep after I log into my user account and after all the startup stuff is done. I read somewhere that it means my computer is about to die, but figured I would throw it out there.
    I appreciate any insight.
    Thanks,
    Jen

  • Why does my Macbook Pro crash almost immediately when I'm offline?

My Macbook Pro (late 2007 if i'm right) crashes randomly, whether I'm using a program or not. Suddenly the whole screen freezes (I see a black mouse and not the spinning ball of death). So I'm forced to use the hard restart.
It started a while ago, when I still was using Snow Leopard. So I did a clean install, and had to buy Mountain Lion. Ever since the clean install there were 3 software updates. But still I'm having the crash problem.
After this last update to 10.8.5 I'm noticing that when I turn WiFi off it almost immediately crashes. And sometimes when I reboot I don't have the time to turn on WiFi again or it already has crashed.
Though I remember that my mac also crashed when I was using the ethernet cable and when i was using WiFi. Only now with the offline modus it seems that crashing is the only thing he can do.
This is what I already tried:
-Making a second account as administrator and start up in the safe mode: but still crashes when I go offline.
-using disk utility to veridy and repair disk permissions: all good.
    -NVRAM reset
    -SMC reset
I don't know what kind of information anyone needs, but:
Processor  2,2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Geheugen  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Videokaart  NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 128 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
And my harddrive has 56 gb free right now.

Thank you for your fast answer.
Even though I don't understand the connection between working offline and my videocard I believe you because I see sometimes blocked images when something tries to load or when i scroll down, mostly in photoshop. So I'm considering buying a new computer.
I tested my harddrive a while ago and it still seemed ok. (still i back up all the important stuff constantly).
Though I wanted to ask if you know if the Nvidia is a part of my logic board. I had my logic board replaced in 2010 because of an Nvidia error. So that part isn't that old. Still I can imagine that it doesn't work well anymore with other hardware or software on my computer.

  • Why doesn't MacBook Pro go to sleep when the battery is empty?

    Hi there!
I was calibrating my MacBook Pro's battery and when I was running the battery down, after the point where the "Low Battery" warning popped up, it ran for 9-10 minutes and the computer just shut down. Let me mention that my battery has no problem lasting for 7 hours. What could be the issue? Is this normal behaviour?

You're just panicing - after there's no more battery reserve left, the Mac will shut down. And if you've a newer MacBook Pro with the unremovable battery, there's no reason to calibrate the battery. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490. As it states:
    "Portables with built-in batteries
Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider."

  • Why does my macbook pro only start up in safe mode?

Last night i updated my macbook pro, and when it restarted it stopped at the logo with the spinning wheel, and it kept spinning for 20+ minutes. I shut it down by holding the button, and it will not start up again, every time the wheel just keeps spinning. I tried holding down shift, and starting it in safe mode, and that seemed to work. But that is the only way it will boot up, and I am limited to what I can do. How can I start my macbook pro up with out safe mode. I do not have my installation disk with me, and I do not have any of my stuff backed up, but I plan on purchasing a external hard drive within the next week to back up everything, incase I have to wipe my hard drive. But I will only do that at last resort...

    MacBook Pro 3,1  15' 2,2 Core 2 Duo Late 2007.
I used the same buss speed (667 mhz) and the same type DDR2. Same number of pins.
I also checked what happened with 0 ram in slots, and then it started blinking constantly.
So it must see the RAM but the RAM seems useless for some reason...

  • Why is my macbook pro suddenly runs slow on mac os X 10.6.7?

Hello..i'm using Macbook Pro running on Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz with 4 Gb of memory on Mac Os X 10.6.7. I have sufficient amount of harddisk and have already clear my cache and run disk repair. However my laptop still runs slow. It happens suddenly where i the time to boot up my comp becomes longer. Now i even have problems running applications where sometimes it just hangs there. All the programs seems to be running slow. Does not anyone having the same problem? Is it something wrong with 10.6.7?Hope anyone out there can help!Very much appreciated!

Same here, I have a 15" MBP, 2.54 ghz mid 2009 running on 10.6.7. After updating to 10.6.7 my MBP s it is very slow to start, slow when launching apps and slow with typing inside of apps. And Safari is very slow when launching a new tab our navigating to a new URL. I have cleaned font caches, made extra disk space, repaired the volume, repaired permissions all to no avail. I use to show off the MBP to my windows users but now I am just embarrassed a they ask me "what's wrong with you laptop?" I turned off a couple of cpu softwares too such as Boom and carbonite and my cpu is never above 9% with an occasional spike to 50% on some larger software launches which is infrequent for me.  Disk activity seem normal too around 10 - 27% access. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Either way, the screenshot is put on your desktop as "Screenshotn.png" (where the n is 1,2,3 or whatever, depending on what is there already). According to the user manual it states in part:"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."

  • Why does my MacBook Pro battery discharge even when the charger is plugged in?

I've been having a myriad of problems with my MacBook Pro's battery. The main problem is that when in use, the battery steadily discharges often at a very quick rate even when I have the charger plugged in, the only way I can get it to recharge is to close the lid or turn the computer off, however, it has recently started to take a very long time to recharge (I left it for 12 hours and it charged from 0% to 60%). I also noticed that while off, the charger light occassionaly goes green and then back to orange every few minutes. When I manage to get the battery up to 100% charge, it usually stays at 'Charged' for around 5 or 10 minutes and then it just comes up with 'Calculating...' as it slowly discharges, it also occassionaly claims that it is recharging and that it will take around 6 to 8 hours but it only charges about 1% of the battery and switches to 'Not charging'. Also, sometimes the charger light wont come on when it is plugged in and the Mac refuses to acknowledge it is plugged in for some time.
I took it to the Apple Store a few months ago and one of the Geniuses reset the System Management controller and did a quick hardware test which seemed to fix it but the problems returned soon after, I cannot enter the hardware test screen and subsequent attempts to reset the SMC have done nothing, he also tested the charger and tried it with another charger but it did not help.  Hope you guys can help me as I am completely stumped by this and its beginning to annoy me as my Mac is becoming almost unusable.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro close open programmes when it sleeps?

    Hi,
I'm having an Auto Sleep issue with my MacBook Pro (13 inch, Mid-2012).
When my mac goes to sleep it closes any and all open programmes. Not only is this annoying but it means the mac can't be left to run a process, such as a length Time Machine back-up, as it will close down the programme mid way through.
The issue happens when running on battery or mains power.
I've gone to System Preferences > Energy Saver > and I've set the Computer Sleep slider-bar to be Never.
I've done this for both Battery and Power Adaptor settings.
I've also made sure the 'Put Hard Disc to Sleep when possible' setting is disabled
I've tried changing to these Power Saver settings then restarting immediately but no joy.
It only seems to happen when the mac goes to sleep from inactivity. If I manually put the mac to sleep it doesn't happen.
It hasn't always done this. It started about a year after I purchased the Mac (new from Apple).
I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. and this hasn't done anything to fix it.
I've tried searching the net and various Mac forums and I can't seem to find anyone reporting the exact same issue. I'm hoping someone on here will be able to help.
    Any ideas anyone?

Or take it to your nearest Genius Bar; if there is a problem, you can exchange it for another machine. Or return this one (14 days from the date of purchase if it was purchased from Apple) and buy another.
