Why is my macbook pro overheating when I use iMovie?

I have a macbook pro with retina display - OS X Version 10.9.2
I use it on a wooden table, nothing is blocking the fan and it overheats all the time. It's been happening every single time when I use iMovie and the fans start go crazy within two minutes of the application being opened. I am constantly using iMovie (I think it is iMovie 10) for school and this is a recent problem. When this happens I close the application, wait for the fans to return to normal and then open the application again until it happens again. This isn't really a solution I just get worried when the fans start to go crazy so I shut down the application in hopes that it won't happen next time.
Is this happening to anyone else?
Thanks

Hi
True answer - NO
Thoughts - YES
My MBP got 4Gb RAM - and get's a bit hot - 8Gb and it might get cooler - less swapping to Hard Disk
If Hard Disk is filling up - it also get's hot - I try to keep at least 25Gb free space on Start-Up Hard Disk (external HDs will not help as Mac OS and applications do not utilize space there by automatic - BUT to free up space on Boot HD they are important)
Running several applications in background e.g. Internet etc - doesn't make my Mac any Cooler - but turning them OFF helps a bit.
Exchanging the Main Boot Drive to a SSD-Hard Disk also reduces energy use - and speeds things up quit a bit too (not tested by me)
BTW - When I use Video-CODECS, Photo and Audio file formats - not really easy for iMovie to use - my iMovie also get's full hand task to do. So by converting material first (outside iMovie) the iMovie projects runs so much better.
Yours Bengt W

  • Why does my Macbook Pro glitch when I'm watching a film on iTunes?

I have a 2006 Macbook Pro, with up-to-date software, and whenever I watch a film on iTunes, it glitches every so often. Why is this?

When I say glitch I mean the video freezes for a couple of seconds, the audio carries on and then the video fast forwards itself to catch up with the audio. It repeats itself at frequent intervals.
The hard drive is 500GB (the RAM is 3GB)
    There is about 230GB left
The internet connection is very fast, and in one half of the house it is WPA2, and in the half where I usually watch films, it is WEP
    5 machines use this WiFi
Nothing is connected to my laptop when I usually watch films
I am 90% of the time usually running off the mains.
I also forgot to mention, that this also happens when watching a film in iMovie or iPhoto. It only started happening a couple of months ago. I hope this helped.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slowe when I open it off line to view photo images?

I had recently activated iCloud. I have it set not to copy my photos or data, but only settings and a few other categories. I opened it offline in Preview to quickly view photos on memory cards. I found it slow, with a drop down box periodically flashing open from  the top of the screen. It appears to be attempting to copy or save my images. I presume this is to iCloud, though I have it specifically unchecked and do not want it saved to iCloud. I have Dropbox, which I quit, so it is not a factor. I never save my photo images there either. In the past, it was never problem to open and view images with Preview. Now it is extremely slow to open and load images for contact sheet view. All this is recent with the addition of Mavericks and iCloud. Also, I attempted to get  out of this by quitting, but had to resort to a forced quit, as it continued to do what it was doing.
Is there a way to be sure iCloud is not copying things and slowing down my computer? Is this a glitch caused by Mavericks?
I have done scans with Sophos Antivirus and it does not appear I have any virus. I have lost all the speed of having a Mac. It is now slower than my old dual core Acer PC. I recently added a Caldigit Thunderbolt dock which has worked great to add USB 3.0 to  my early 2011 MacBook Pro which had not 3.0 ability, but this
was bypassed, as my card reader is only 2.0. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think I have found the source of my problem detailed above. Apparently, there have been problems with Preview running on OS Mavericks, dating back to October 2013, which Apple has yet to acknowledge or address. Many have had similar problems with photo images loading very slowly to the point of making Preview unuseable.
It may also explain problems I have had with flash drives and hard drives that ran on my Mac Book Pro under Lion no longer working  since upgrading to Mavericks. I found other postings on these issues.
It is a shame that I have to resort to Google as the best source to identify problems with my Mac and possible solutions. In many cases, it directs me to the source on Apple Support, which is difficult to find when one attempts a search via Apple Support. This could use some improvement.
I am new to using community support sites and Apple does not seem  to provide simple, clear directions  on how to get started. Jumping in with both feet, not only did I get wet, but I apparently "splashed" someone, as I got a hostile response from another community member on the first issue ever posted. I never did get an answer to the problem, though. I hope some find these comments helpful.
Oh, and wake up, Apple. We all would hope you monitor and glean information from these postings and act promptly to remedy problems with OS Mavericks.

  • MacBook Pro overheating when monitor is in sleep [weird]

    Hello everybody,
this is my first post here but I am a long time Apple user (from 1995 until today).
Last summer, in August, I bought my new MBP 15" with non-Retina display, mid-2012 series which presents a very strange issue.
I investigated a lot on the problem, trying everything, without coming to a solution, unfortunately.
I think I will contact Apple also via Bug Report website, because I think it's a software bug. I'd like to hearing from you, as well.
Users' experiences are often more useful.
The thing is quite simple to reproduce: when I put the monitor(s) to sleep, doesn't matter if only the integrated one or using also the external display attached to the Mac, the GPU becomes HOT, let's say hotter than when using the Mac normally. Isn't it strange?
How do I measure the temperature?
There are many softwares. I use two: Temperature Monitor and iStat Pro, which is a widget for the Dashboard.
    I also use my hand!
If I go away from my desktop and leave the display going to sleep, or if I put it to sleep manually using a hot corner (it's the same, no difference), when I come back and touch the top case in the zone corresponding to the processor and the GPUs, it is uncomfortably hot.
When I use the MBP normally, like now, writing this post, with fifteen applications open (among which Photoshop) in the background the GPU is at only 48° and the top case slightly warm.
When I come back from sleep the sensors display temperatures that go from 60°C to 80°C !!!
It's absurd. Everybody knows that high temperatures are not healthy for electronic components and batteries.
I decided to investigate deeply, looking also into the logs, and I found, in /var/log/system.log the following excerpt just after coming back from sleep mode with the GPU working in some mysterious way:
    Mar 18 12:56:29 MacBookPro.local WindowServer[111]: handle_will_sleep_auth_and_shield_windows: releasing authw 0x7fbab9a31350(2000), shield 0x7fbab8e65950(2001), lock state 2

Then I booked an appointment to the Genius Bar, in my nearest Apple Store in Rome.
First time, after explaining the issue, they changed the fans (...).
No way, it didn't work (I had my doubts from the beginning it should do, anyway).
Second time I booked, they resetted SMC and PRAM (NVRAM), and gave me the MacBook Pro back.
It didn't work. I did the reset before going to the AS, by myself, at home.
Third time I booked, suspecting a hardware problem, they changed the whole logic board.
    It didn't solve the problem.
I tested and reproduced the issue with the lastest release of Mac OSX, 10.8.3, with a clean install and no third party softwares installed. It happens not everytime the display goes to sleep, but almost everytime.
I also have done all the firmware updates, every time they came along in Software Update application from August 2012 since today.
I really don't know what else I can do, except writing to Apple Bug Reports and hope they read me and work on this.
Moreover, to understand if it's an issue related to the Intel HD Graphics 4000 card or to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M one I found and installed a simple software, gfxCardStatus, which allows you to bypass Apple automatic switch feature and choose manually which card to use.
I noticed that only using the most powerful card, the NVIDIA GeForce, the MacBook Pro becomes hot when the display is left alone and goes to sleep after the interval set in Energy Savings options.
Disabling the screensaver doesn't change anything.
Changing the period after which user's password is asked after waking the Mac from sleep changes nothing as well.
Useless to say, I need to leave my Mac turned on, because sometimes I have to access to it from another machine, and I also want to save energy and the life of my monitors putting them to sleep when I don't use them.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your attention so far.
    Daniele

The Zendock simply bunches the different normal plugs together. So there's no way for the MacBook to detect that it's being used.
I don't think I've seen a dock in recent times that does what you want it to do.

  • MacBook Pro overheating when I close the screen

I have a Macbook Pro one year from now.
I used it without problems until a couple of weeks that when I closed the screen (not shut down) and I plugged to electricity, the mbp becomes extremely hot.
Any suggestions how to solve the issue?
    Thanks.

OK. Open Activity Monitor and select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Then look through the CPU column and see if you can find some process--perhaps a hung up printer process--using more than 50%--maybe even 100%--of the CPU. These hung up processes, if you have one, can generate a lot of heat.
Also, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test, just to be sure that the fans and the thermal sensors are functioning properly. If you get any error codes, please post back with them.
    Good luck!

  • Recently got a MacBook Pro.  When I use it for work purposes, I plug in a large screen and key board.  When in this mode I would like to shut off the laptop screen or even close the lid. Is that possible?

RECENTLY GOT A mACKbOOK PRO. WHEN USING IT FOR WORK PURPOSES I PLUG IN A LARGE SCREEN AND KEYBOARD, THAT WORKS FINE.  HOWEVER WOULD LIKE TO CLOSE LID ON THE LAPTOP, OR AT LEAST SHUT DOWN THE LAPTOP SCREEN WHILE USING THE LARGE SCREEN. IS THAT POSSIBLE?

    Hi Jim,
Craig is right on with his post. Hope he won't mind if I add the following link, as recently it has been noted by some posts here that there are some "quirks" with Clamshell Mode:

  • MacBook Pro overheating after security update

Why is my Macbook Pro overheating?

None of your images are displayed.  If you could try again it might be of help.
118° f is satisfactory and not to be alarmed at.  Aperture certainly can increase the temperature.  I surmise that your MBP is a pre-unibody model.
Here are the list of videos from the OWC web site.  Choose the one for the model that you have, 15" or 17" and look at one at replacing the HDD to understand how to take the top cover off.  Having an older MBP, you may have dirt and dust inside that should be cleaned out and this is the only way of accessing it. Contaminants can be a cause of heat buildup.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers for this.  I suggest doing this on a clear table with a towel underneath.  That way you can slide the MBP easily around and if you drop one of the screws, they will not bounce far.  Sequence is important and taking off the top cover should be done with care so that the ribbon cable is not damaged.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make background music and video quieter when I am on FaceTime?

Why does my MacBook Pro make background music and video quieter when I am on FaceTime? When my girlfriend and I are trying to watch a movie on Netflix together while on FaceTime my MacBook Pro always decreases the volume of any background sound on my computer so I can barely hear it. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you!

Have the same issue too. Apple can you please change this annoying feature. You are making long distance relationships more difficult.
I like how Facetime was with the old iOS, where nothing was dimmed. OR at least maybe if you could give users the option to turn on or off dimming of facetime.

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."
