Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
          Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
           ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

Why is my MacBook Pro running so slow after installing Mountain Lion 10.8. I have restarted, created more free space on my hard drive and run disk utilities. Simple operations result 20 seconds or more of the spinning wheel. Some are so slow that the operation does not happen at all. Itunes music cuts out during operations.

Check out this article by Thomas Reed for help http://www.reedcorner.net/understanding-upgrade-nightmares/. Also, make sure all apps are compatible with Mountain Lion using www.roaringapps.com. Do you have any antivirus installed? Make sure all apps are updated as well.

Write off the MS stuff as indicators for now--starting with Office 2008, they developed very long launch times. The time to launch 2008 on my old 1.25Ghz G4 and my MBP 2.2G are virtually the same. Even document opens/saves are slow compared to Office 2004 and earlier.
    1) You have adequate hard drive space so that eliminates one of the usual suspects.
    2) Check for runaway background processes. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage. Watch the processes "bubble" for about a minute to get a better picture of the usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated. My MBP shows nothing using more that about 5 percent on any given test run as long as I close all my user apps.
    3) If you have never done any sort of maintenance procedures, taht can slow you down. Simply restarting the computer a few times a week clear a lot of temporary files. You also may wish to review this article on the Mac OSX periodic maintenance scripts, which, if run, also do a lot of cleanup:

There are other useful articles on file maintenance associated with the one. Here's the index:

    4) Use Disk Utility to check the SMART Status of your hard drive. A failing drive can make things slow before it makes things stop.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro running so slow?

I have a MacBook Pro that I bought in September 2012, and it has been running absolutely fine until last week. I left it on for an hour while I went out, and when I came back it was suddenly running really slow (couldn't get rid of the spinning beach ball of death). I thought maybe it was because it needed updating, so I attempted to do this. However, it didn't do it properly. Not quite sure what happened but then it wouldn't even get past the startup screen. I know it's my own stupid fault that all this has happened, I kept ignoring the 'updates available' banner. Anyway, I googled what to do and got so impatient, I tried resetting the PRAM, verifying disk permissions, fsck, checked activity monitor etc. Nothing was wrong or out of the ordinary. I reinstalled OS X, took 24 hours but for some reason still wasn't working. So I tried it again, still didn't fix it and was stuck on the startup screen. Not quite sure what happened but then it eventually came on, although sadly somewhere along the way I had completely wiped my hard drive. Again, I was stupid for not backing up my data, and should have just left everything to the experts rather than being so impatient. After all of that, I've installed mavericks but it is still no better. It is just as slow as when it first started playing up, although at least it is actually functioning on some level now. I've accepted that I'm never getting my data back (unless anyone can tell me if there's a way?), but I'm baffled as to why it still isn't working properly, and I have lost everything for no reason. Please can someone help me as I am ready for throwing my laptop at someone or something.

    chunk1234,
if your lost data is of considerable value to you, then you could try hiring a data recovery service, but their time is expensive. If you wish to go down that route, cleanly shut down your MacBook Pro, and don’t turn it on again until after the data recovery service has returned it to you — every time you do something on your hard drive, you make it more difficult for data recovery to succeed.
You might want to buy an external hard drive for use as a Time Machine backup destination, so that this situation doesn’t happen again — restoring from your last backup is far, far cheaper than hiring a data recovery service.
Regarding your current slowdown, have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller?

  • Why is my Macbook Pro Running So Slow. I have the i7 2.8 GHz. I Have the Late 2011 version. I Have 4GB Of Ram. Help!

I have a 2.8 GHz Macbook Pro with 4GB of Ram and also it's the Late 2011 version. It's also a i7. ALSO IT HAS 750GB, Why is my Mac Running SLOW!!!!!!!!

Frankly, I was dissapointed when I got my MBP last year.  Moving from a single core, windows laptop with 2GB of Ram and an IDE HD, I expected better performance from my new 2.2Ghz i7 quad core, 4GB RAM MBP. I got the hi-res antiglare upgrade because more screen real estate is always good.  I do a bit of multimedia work so I upgraded the HD as well to the 750GB 7200 RPM option.
I fired up my new mac, downloaded updates, loaded up my software and was off to fresh new beginnings. During the first week  I started seeing the "spinning umbrella"  Even during simple tasks. With only a few apps open the system was sluggish. Even the dock would jitter. Being a bit tech savy I opened up the activity monitor and saw that the system was running low on RAM. Who would have thought that 4GB of RAM would not be enough? My previous machine had 2GB of RAM and did the same tasks quite reasonably. Anyone would have concluded that a machine with double that would perform better. Aparrently not. At least not this MBP.  I was so upset because I just spent about 2000 USD for the "best laptop we've build to date" WITH UPGRADES! and I'm going to have to spend more to upgrade the RAM.
Anyway I upgraded to 8GB of RAM and runs reall really smooth now.
My suggestion if your MBP is running slow, is to upgrade your RAM to 8GB or more. Check out the guys at Other World Computing, they have lots of upgrades for macs.
    Here is a link http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade
The hard  truth cut through all the marketing and hit me. I'll say it this way; a computer is a computer, is a computer. Forget all the hype. With the same specs, a mac gives just sbout the same performance as a PC. That said, I really love my MBP(now that I have 8GB of RAM). This mac gives me the best computing experience I have ever had. Apple really shines in their User interface and user experience. I really love the gestures and hot corners, and mission control. I usually have a lot of apps open the same time, so those features really help in switching between my apps.
I'm going to further upgrade my RAM to 16GB and upgrade the HDD to an SSD pretty soon. I want my machine to be really snappy.
    I hope this was helpful.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro running so slow when returning from sleep mode?

I got my new Macbook this past Christmas so it is about two months old. I have the 13" Macbook with the standard 4GB of RAM (not sure if that matters), but when I got my mac I downloaded a bunch of games and such which may have slowed it down initially, though I have downloaded OnyX and Appzapper to uninstall apps and clean my computer. Also I have deleted EVERYTHING from "Login Items" which I thought might help. Basically whenever I am done using my computer I just shut the screen, I don't shut it down or actually click "Sleep Mode" so I'm not sure if shutting the screen puts it in "Sleep Mode," but whenever I open my computer back up I get that spinning loading icon when I click on anything on my desktop and it usually takes 5-10 minutes of this super slow loading before I can actually use my computer. Not sure what the deal is but it is clearly super annoying and I'm hoping to find out how to get around this. I have six 2GB sticks of RAM that I am hoping to trade for two 4GB sticks of RAM to speed up my computer but I am not sure if that would even fix my problem. This is my first Macbook, besides my mothers Mac desktop that I have been using for years throughout High School, but I am a windows guy. I consider myself pretty good with computers, not an expert but I can fix 95% of the problems I encounter, but this one has been stumping me! Thanks a million in advance!

    Hello Linc -
I hope you don't mind but I have a similar issue. Might I be able to enlist your assistance with this issue? I've done as you said, and I have copied the approximate range of messages during my most recent incident. What I'm noticing is that my Mac is staying busy even while asleep. I'm concerned about this behavior, hoping you might be able to help debug the situation and set me on a good path to resolution.
Here's my data (I don't know for certain that I grabbed the proper amount or range of data, but hoping this will help):

  • Why is my MacBook Pro running extremely slow?

    Hello,
I am currently using Photoshop to batch a series of images.. Normally this would take less than 5 minutes for 100+ photos, however it has taken over two hours for just 40 photos.
The photos are still JPEG at a medium size. I don't understand why laptop is running so slow!!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • Why is my macbook pro running so slow and so slow to reboot?

    Hello,
I edit using Lightroom and Photoshop and I'm having an issue while editing. After editing around 8-10 photos in Photoshop the computer starts running unbelievably slow. After each 8-10 photos I have to close down everything and reboot. Even the reboot process is super slow as I have to force quit each application usually 1-2 times to get it to close. Is this normal? I have a 2011 17" with 2.2 GHZ i7 with 8GB ram. Is there any setting that I can change or be aware of.
    Thanks,
    Jack Fussell

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “system.log” from the file list. Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
    Step 3
Same as step 2, but select "kernel.log" from the file list.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro running so slowly/Pinwheeling all the time?

I have had this Macbook for almost exactly a year. It has the Lion OS. It just recently started running very sluggish. It started with iMovie. I do a lot of video projects and iMovie started to constantly shut down, pinwheel, or stop responding and I would have to force quit about every 10 minutes. Now, my safari is running slow, launch pad takes 5-10 seconds to display my apps, and even rolling over my apps on the dock takes a second to magnify. I have looked online for answers, but I am just a 19 year old girl and I don't understand technical things very well.
If some one would take me through a step by step easy to follow process to diagnose my problem I would be so thankful!
I know I have 4 GB right now.
    Thank you!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro running so slowly/Pinwheeling all the time in maverick?

In Firefox, Mail, Pages, everywhere!  My hard drive is about 1/3 full, I'm not running anything except Firefox, mail, pages,  & quicken.  I did a disk repair (there were problems) but now they're fixed and it's not any better.  Ideas please?

Thank yo so much for taking the time to help me.

Looks like the Open Source USB 3.0 driver GenericUSBXHCI is causing this. I'd suggest uninstalling it.

Why is my macbook pro running so slow after os x yosemite upgrade

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.
