Why is my MacBook Pro slow? Beach ball

Boy, I was looking at a discussion of this from TODAY, about a half hour ago, and now can't find it.
"Why is my MacBook Pro slow?" brings "screen tearing issue" and other things not related to my problem.
I got and ran Easyfind, and got rid of MacKeeper.
What else do I need to do?
I have the beach ball way too often.
I just made an iMovie, but optimizing it for YouTube is impossible.  Boxes keep getting grayed out; complete hangup.
Can easyfind help further?
Thank you.

Hi Tomo 2,
Kim Komando said get Sophos, so I did.  I see it found something called Bredo-K on Nov. 22.
It's now scanning my OVER 5 MILLION FILES.  Seriously, I don't think I need that many.
Right now about 50% of CPU idle,
about 1.03 GB Ram free.
Sophos is using about 90% of whatever.
This scanning could take all weekend.  I need to get rid of some stuff.  Hard to know what, though.
Thanks for any more ideas.
Jerry

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

I am having the same issue. I hook it up to the charger in the evening and close the lid. When I go to use it the next time it takes a good 30 seconds or so to wake up. The screen shows the log in screen but typing doesn't work and the cursor is frozen. Sometimes it will even give the rainbow wheel for the cursor, so it seem like it is processing whatever to get going. I also notice that my battery won't be fully charged at anywhere from 95%-99% after being charged a full evening. What can I do to change whatever is happening because it is pretty crappy to charge it all night expecting to have a full battery for the next use, plus the issue of having to sit there waiting for it to boot every time.

  • My MacBook Pro constantly beach balls (freezes) when I start any activity (click open)?

My MacBook Pro constantly beach balls with every activity.
    4.5 years old.
    Version 10.6.8
processor 2.66 GHz intel Core i7
    memory 4 gb 1067 MHz DDR3
Started about a week ago, unusable.
    Just out of its warranty.
    Not particularly computer literate.
    Help please?

I like to clean install the operating system at least once a year. It keeps the machine very 'snappy'. Before I clean install the operating system I make sure that all of my data is backed up.

  • New MacBook Pro is "beach-balling." What's going on?

My 15" Retina MBP w. NVIDIA & 16GB RAM has started lagging in performance, often beach-balling for a few seconds whenever performing simple app and Finder tasks.
Checked Activity Monitor and noticed something I never saw on my 2011 Mac Mini (Lion) when running the same programs -- "kernel_task." It's the largest Memory, CPU and Network user of all the active processes. Another big user of CPU is "sysmond."
What are these processes and could they be the cause? NOTE: I keep my MBP on all the time, hooked to two external monitors. Would this eventually use up resources?

  • 15" i7 Core MacBook Pro + Spinning Beach Balls of Death = What's going on?

As the title suggests, I bought a 15" i7 Core MacBook Pro about 3 weeks ago, but I notice that it has many beach balls (or spinning colored circles) when trying to use applications such as iTunes or Safari on my up to date Mac. Most of the time it happens when I try to open something, but I noticed slow loading times for some applications as well as them being non-responsive to where I have to force quit them (or in iPhoto '11's case, it one time crashed and I had to relaunch).
I did some research, and I found that this issue has affected other Core i7 MacBook Pro and iMac users. I already did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, updated all of my software, and I next am going to run Disk Utility and TechTool Deluxe to see if that will help at all (doubt it will as I still had this problem after running Disk Utility before the fresh install with a temporary improvement before the problems came back).
So, what's going on with my new Mac? I could always bring it into the Apple Store and have the Genius Bar look at it (as it's covered for 3 years under AppleCare), but I wonder if there's something I can do on my end which could perhaps avoid that. Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion, Dale, but the SBBODs come across multiple applications, so it's hard to tell what may be causing it. I can check Activity Monitor the next time I see a SBBOD and see if terminating it helps. I hope it's not (and I don't think it is) a hardware issue as my MBP is only 3 weeks old!
Also, as I think about it, I read on that handy dandy SBBOD FAQ that having the option to put hard disks to sleep whenever possible unchecked to speed up hard drive access time. I also noticed that it stated to do this if I notice lag when accessing a hard drive. I have SBBODs when trying to open a file in programs such as iPhoto, Pages, etc. Also, I notice that programs, iTunes comes to mind, can become non-responsive when trying to do certain things (like using the iTunes store, accessing a different pane like music to iPhone, etc.). Could this be a possible culprit?
Speaking of hardware, I have 4 GB of DDR3 RAM installed. Additionally, I have a Core i7 2.66 GHz processor, just to answer an asked question.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slowe when I open it off line to view photo images?

I had recently activated iCloud. I have it set not to copy my photos or data, but only settings and a few other categories. I opened it offline in Preview to quickly view photos on memory cards. I found it slow, with a drop down box periodically flashing open from  the top of the screen. It appears to be attempting to copy or save my images. I presume this is to iCloud, though I have it specifically unchecked and do not want it saved to iCloud. I have Dropbox, which I quit, so it is not a factor. I never save my photo images there either. In the past, it was never problem to open and view images with Preview. Now it is extremely slow to open and load images for contact sheet view. All this is recent with the addition of Mavericks and iCloud. Also, I attempted to get  out of this by quitting, but had to resort to a forced quit, as it continued to do what it was doing.
Is there a way to be sure iCloud is not copying things and slowing down my computer? Is this a glitch caused by Mavericks?
I have done scans with Sophos Antivirus and it does not appear I have any virus. I have lost all the speed of having a Mac. It is now slower than my old dual core Acer PC. I recently added a Caldigit Thunderbolt dock which has worked great to add USB 3.0 to  my early 2011 MacBook Pro which had not 3.0 ability, but this
was bypassed, as my card reader is only 2.0. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think I have found the source of my problem detailed above. Apparently, there have been problems with Preview running on OS Mavericks, dating back to October 2013, which Apple has yet to acknowledge or address. Many have had similar problems with photo images loading very slowly to the point of making Preview unuseable.
It may also explain problems I have had with flash drives and hard drives that ran on my Mac Book Pro under Lion no longer working  since upgrading to Mavericks. I found other postings on these issues.
It is a shame that I have to resort to Google as the best source to identify problems with my Mac and possible solutions. In many cases, it directs me to the source on Apple Support, which is difficult to find when one attempts a search via Apple Support. This could use some improvement.
I am new to using community support sites and Apple does not seem  to provide simple, clear directions  on how to get started. Jumping in with both feet, not only did I get wet, but I apparently "splashed" someone, as I got a hostile response from another community member on the first issue ever posted. I never did get an answer to the problem, though. I hope some find these comments helpful.
Oh, and wake up, Apple. We all would hope you monitor and glean information from these postings and act promptly to remedy problems with OS Mavericks.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slow with Mavericks?

Hi there guys... I am also having problems with a slow MacBook Pro late 2012 after mavericks.
I am running Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 8gb ram machine and the rest is like it came from Apple, a 2.5Ghz i5 500HD.
Here is the bootlog that I got... I am not sure when to STOP copying the lines so I guess I got a lot of them... can someone help me?
Is there something to be done?
Oh... the login page took 00:52,76 and after logging in it started with 01:13,11.  It used to be much faster before.

    Hello Charles,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Prowas running slowly.  I found a couple of articles I recommend to help isolate and troubleshoot this issue.
I recommend reviewing this article first for possible causes of the slowness:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
You can further isolate the issue by determining if it is only happening in your user account or if it is happening system-wide:
Isolating an issue by using another user account

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Brand New Macbook Pro i7 - beach balling constantly

    Hi everyone.
I bought a new Macbook Pro, 15" i7, 4 gig ram, 750gig stock HD from apple in July to replace my 2007 black 2.4ghz macbook.
Ever since I took it out of the box it has been slower than expected, about on-par with my old machine. I thought it was the initial Lion teething problems and thought i'd leave it a few weeks for it to be updated. My SD slot also does not work 100% of the time.
I'm experiencing a lot of slow down and hanging, switiching to different windows and applications, horrendous beachballing when doing basic photo editing tasks that my old macbook would steam through. If I have more than 3 or 4 apps open, such as iTunes, Pages, iCal and Google Chrome (i have also tried it with Safari), my computer grinds. I bought the machine for video and photograph editing based on a friends old 2008 machine, doing these tasks on this machine is a joke.
I ran Onyx, based on a recommendation, no result there. I have also reset the SMC to no avail. I have a good 300 gig of space free on the HD, so no problems there. Has anyone else experienced these problems? This is my third mac and the older ones seemed to steam through the most advanced tasks, right now I feel that i've wasted the best part of £1800. Aside from doing a fresh install of Lion or Snow Leopard, i'm outta options.
    Can anyone help me out?

ds store is right: the machine is obviously faulty. Tell them about the card reader problem and get the machine exchanged. Don't let them fob you off with a service. I had a problem with the DVD drive, the trackpad and the card reader in the first year of my 2009 MBP and each time I let them get away with 'servicing' until the Warranty ran out, and I now have to use a cable for the camera, can only use 'tap' (not click) on the trackpad and have to use an external DVD writer.
Like you, I'd had a previous Apple laptop (2004 iBook) that could take a direct hit from a Scud missile and still function perfectly (indeed, its still going now) , so I was not as insistent as I should have been.
Apple machines are great, but every now and again you get a dud.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow all of a sudden?

Question repost as the first question posted, only received one answer that did not assist at all, unfortunately.
I have a 2013 Macbook Pro that i purchased earlier this year.  My second.  First one had 0 problems, ever.  I upgraded from 8 to 16gb of RAM, and it was running just as it should.  All of a sudden, and without any warning, it has slowed to a snails pace on just about everything.  I get the pinwheel of death constantly, it's taking 20-30 minutes to move 1.77GB of data, which used to take under 1 minute.  Programs are slow to open, and the stalling is constant.  I've read a few forums, and all signs seem to point to the beginning of a HD failure?  Can someone please assist?
Sidenote:  i went and checked the disc permissions, which did show many errors, all of which, however, i repaired.  It started working again fairly well for a day, and is now back to the same level of slow.  What could this be?  Please help.

  • Macbook very slow, Beach ball !!!

I've tried disk repair and alsorts but to no avail.
Is there any way of curing the beachball and speeding up my Mac ?
    Thanks

very welcome .  Now how often does the beach ball appear?  You will see it sometimes, but shouldn't see it frequently.  This is why it appears:
"the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears."

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slow?

My MacBook Pro became very slow. I tried to restart it but it wouldn't startup. I managed to start it in safe mode. Afther this it now starts up but is very slow.
What can I do to make it fast again?
    Thanks

A Mac that spontaneously begins to perform poorly without having installed any software or making other changes to it is usually the result of a hardware fault, and the most common cause is a failing hard disk drive.
It can be replaced. Make a Genius Bar reservation: Genius Bar Reservations
Back up your data prior to approaching a Genius Bar. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac

  • Why is the MacBook Pro slower than my G4 1.25mhz?

I have been having issues with my MBP for a while now. It was 1.5 G of RAM and has been optimized. My iMovie runs very slow and it takes forever sometimes to empty the trash. It is just a very sensitive system? I can throw almost anything at my desktop and it operates fine. I thought the MBP would be blazing and its not. I understand that some of the applications I use are not native, but it shouldn't be running this slow. I have about 30gigs left on the hard drive also. Can anyone help?

Using a third-party optimizer (i.e., defragmenter) is risky on Intel Macs. I'm not sure there are any compatible defraggers. Improper defragging could be the cause of your problem. Transferring applications that were all PPC apps that have now replaced the pre-installed Intel apps. No wonder things are slow.
I suspect you need to erase the drive and reinstall the OS or at the very least repair the hard drive then do an Archive and Install.
For future reference OS X does not require defragmentation. OS X defrags all files under 20 MBs on the fly.
Here's some useful info on migrating from PPC to Intel Macs:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow to sleep in Mountain Lion?

When I choose sleep from the Apple menu it takes approx. 30 seconds before it decides to go to sleep. It gives me no notification that it is going to sleep until 30 seconds later when the screen goes black. Same thing if I close the lid, I can open it up again and begin to work on the machine again with it sleeping 20 seconds later. Sleep has always been almost instantaneous on all of my other macs.
    Any ideas?

  • WHY does my Macbook Pro (mid 2012) always slow to crawl when I wake it up and go online???

I wake up my Macbook Pro (sweetly tell it that I love it)
click on one of the 1-10 tabs I have open in Firefox or Safari
Click on iTunes (open already) to play some tunes
    Wait
Wait while the little ball spins as my browser thinks
    wait a bit more
finally the tab I click on comes to the front, but the page takes 15-60 seconds to load
    I proceed feeling irritated
    A little help?
    Specs:
    15" Mid 2012 Macbook Pro
    2.3ghz Intel Core i7 Processor
    500gb HD
    4gb RAM
    Etc.
    Apps that I am using:
    Safari
    Firefox
    iTunes
    Adobe Illustrator (occasionally)
    Lightroom 4 (occasionally)
Why oh why must my Macbook Pro drive me insane by getting hung up for minutes on end???

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Spotlight may be indexing your drive(s).  Click the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar; if it shows things being indexed, that's at least some of the reason.
