Why is my macbook sooo unbelievably slow. For everything?

Hello if anyone can help me on this i'd really appreciate it.
I can't believe how slow my macbook is. For browsing. For opening files. I type and there is always a delay. There must be something running in the background that i can't identify and close down. I've paid for MacKeeper but it's made no difference. When i close the lid then reopen it often takes minutes before i can actually type the password in!!!! it's really stressful.
I also have a mac app which can free up memory it is consistently at less than 30mb (out of 4gb) and i clear it but it's back to less than 30 in no time.
Macbook pro = macbook Slow.
Can anyone help or advise?
Many thanks,
Tim

Remove "MacKeeper" as follows. First, back up all data.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Do not empty the Trash after dragging the MacKeeper application to it. Let the application delete itself.
Do not try to uninstall by dragging the MacKeeper icon in the Dock or the LaunchPad to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
If your system is still slow after removing MacKeeper and rebooting, continue.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • My MacBook Pro running slow-for everything

    Hello everyone!
I am fairly new to the MacBook family.  Just got my very first one last year for Christmas.  It has been wonderful and I'm sure I'm not using it to its fullest potential.  It hasn't given me a problem at all for an entire year until just about a week ago.  Its running slow.  Stagnant in fact.  It takes forever to even boot up.  I see the color wheel for everything that I try to click.  Safari, Mail, etc.  Even if I just want to shut down or restart.  It seems to freeze on everything.  And there was no warning to it.  One day working fine and running at its usual lighting speed and the next day color wheel for everything.
I'm sure its new operator error and would love any suggestions on how to fix it (or what I am doing wrong) before I make an appointment to go talk to someone at our local Apple store.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2

Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

Spotlight may be indexing your drive(s).  Click the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar; if it shows things being indexed, that's at least some of the reason.

You need to give us much more information.  Which year and model version of Macbook Pro do you have?  What "exactly" is running "slowly": internet downolads, Apps opening or running, etc.etc.?  How much RAM do you have?  How full is your hard drive?

Why is my macbook pro running so slow after os x yosemite upgrade

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Start with the really simple things like rebooting…
        Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) - Time since boot: 31 days 7:16:27
Computers can run for months on end if they are setup for that (e.g. a server) simply rebooting a laptop will help to flush any RAM that has been leaked & clear out old temporary files etc. It may make it run better.
Your hard disk is a spinning disk - if you want better performance upgrade to a SSD for better read & write times (the whole OS should run quicker).
More RAM could help too, you can upgrade to 16GB if you want to do so.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro run slow if it's not on the Charger?

My macbooks running terribly slow and I've tried everything. The only thing I've noticed is that it runs faster on the charger. The mouse is super laggy and it's been like this for a couple weeks now. I restored my whole computer, clear cookies, ran updates, cleared disks, etc. Has anybody else had this problem before?

    Try a smc reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself.

  • Why is my macbook Pro 17" slow compared to desktop PCs?

I switched over to a mac before the summer. I am a Systems Engineer so I'm on the computer a lot and always working in several different programs at a time. I find that my macbook is very slow compared to any desktop I use. I have a keyboard that I hook up to my macbook pro and I have a bluetooth mouse. The bluetooth mouse seems very slow when I click it and I have the settings set to fast. Manuevering around the macbook pro just seems so slow and my productivity goes way down when I work from home as opposed to when I am at work on a desktop. Any ideas?

Hi, p4d. You don't have a late-2008 MBP, so you'd probably do better to repost in a more appropriate forum for your MBP model:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1149
When posting there, it will be useful for those responding to your post if you'll specify what other computer(s) you're comparing your MBP to. A notebook computer and a desktop computer with roughly similar specs are unlikely to match up very closely; the notebook will usually benchmark slower and will often feel slower too — especially when running on battery power. Energy-saving features that a desktop doesn't need are often invoked automatically when a notebook runs off its battery, and typically they result in slower performance. Beyond these general comments, I can't ofer any more specific suggestions or tests for your situation. I hope you'll find more focused help in the other forum.
If your BlueTooth mouse is sluggish, then it would be useful to test using an ordinary USB mouse to see whether the BT connection is part (or all) of the problem. I don't think highly of BT — it's a lot more trouble than it's worth, as far as I'm concerned.

  • Why is my Macbook pro so slow? And what can I do to fix this?

Greetings, I got my MacBook pro one and a half a year ago. For some reason, the last 4 months the computer has started to slow down. I get issues such as.
         - Beach ball appearing to often, even for simple commands such as open folder. etc.
         - Video files skipping frames. (any video file on any program. Even if its a buffer video such as youtube or Netflix).
         - Programs such as Photshop, Final Cut Pro etc, takes forever to render and work properly.
         - Web Browser taking forever to close a tab.
    I am currently running a OS X V.10.8.5
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    353.2GB Freespace out of 499.25.
Could any one explain why would a mac slow down? (not a speculation, just why would it slow down like this. Especially the beach ball uninvited appearence).
I looked up the problem on the net, I get way to many differant answears that lead to getting scam programs, and or other 3rd party programs. (I did not download any of them)
I hope some of you understand the problem and have an answear to this. I tried to ask apple support, but they ask for money. I have a feeling that mac slow down forcing you to buy support intentionally (this is just a thought).
I avoid downloading uppdates from apple, because most people I know who uppdate macs always end up with a slow computer. + Last time I tried to uppdate the mac, I got a gray screen that blocked me from using the computer at all. To avoid this problem again, uppdating is not an option.
Pardon my English, it is not my native tounge.
    Thank you for reading.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Why is my macbook pro running slow.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)

Hi.  This is my first time posting.  My Macbook Pro with Os X Mavericks has been running super slow since before I installed Mavericks so I'm pretty sure it's not the OS that has the problem.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser, particulary google chrome.  If mail is open...forget about it, down to a crawl.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)
P.S. - Also, it sounds like something is loose inside my mac.  How should I proceed?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Why does my macbook run so slow?? I am running OSX 10.8.4

    I am running OSX 10.8.4
My Macbook pro is running extremely slow.
It takes a while to power down.
web pages do not pop up automatically like in the beginning.
What can i do to get my laptop back to fresh out the box performance???
This is getting irritating, since i need this laptop for school.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.

  • My Macbook Pro is slow for no apparent reason.

My mid 2012 Macbook Pro has all of a sudden become really slow.  I really don't know why.  I have shut down my computer many times to try and reset the RAM and everything.  It has 4GB of RAM.  I usually only have about 2GB when my computer starts up.  I haven't had any unusual activity lately.  I've just been doing my normal thing.  Now the beach ball has to spin every couple of seconds sometimes.  I can't even type a full sentence sometimes without it having to load something.  Is there something going on in the background that I don't know about?  I've tried running my antivirus, but it only scanned about 30,000 files (5%) in an 18 hour time period.  I really don't know what's going on and it's frustrating.  Any help is greatly appreciated. If you need any other info posted, just let me know.  I'll be happy to post it.  Thanks!

    Why is my computer slow?
What antivirus software? Uninstall it accordingly to the developers instructions. You don't need it.
    Check memory usage:
Activity monitor > Memory > Page outs & Swap Used . What does it read?
