Why is my Magic Trackpad sometimes very choppy?

I have recently started having problems with my Magic Trackpad. I love the thing, but it is now jumping around so much that it makes it close to unusable. I may even have to switch back to a...gasp...regular mouse!
Here is what I have done to try to fix the problem:
Restarted my mac
Disconnected the Bluetooth pairing
Replaced the batteries (currently at 95%)
Moved further from my MBP
Moved closer to my MBP
I have a 27" LED display hooked up to my 13" MBP but otherwise nothing else.
Anyone have any ideas???

This from the linked article:
Certain external monitors and LCD displays: Certain displays may emit harmonic interference, especially in the 2.4GHz band between channels 11 and 14. This interference may be at its worst if you have a portable computer with the lid closed and an external monitor connected to it. Try changing your access point to use 5 Ghz or a lower 2.4 GHz channel.

So, if you have control of the router, try a lower channel number.

  • Why can my magic trackpad not be found?

Why can my magic trackpad not be found? It was working fine before the upgrade.

Ok, I found the problem. I guess the trackpad powers down at 15% because it came on for a brief moment for me to see that my batts were low.  I must have bad rechargeable batteries, I put these in just last week ago and they are dead. I guess it was just a coincidence that is happened at the same time of the upgrade. The green light would come on and it made me think all was ok.

  • Why does my magic trackpad work intermittently

I have a problem with my trackpad and mouse and hardwired mouse. When I rollover an object and click it doesnt work. I have recently installed LION thinking now that maybe this has caused the problem. I have to reboot several times before it starts working again not happy about doing that. any ideas anyone?

You could take a shot through these:
    Reset your computer's PRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh26871.html
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
And also pull the com.apple.bluetooth.plist file to the desktop (reboot again) to see what happens.
Also make sure you are not using all peripherals at the same time. Try one at a time.

  • Magic Trackpad has become a battery black hole

Why has my Magic Trackpad suddenly start eating batteries like potato chips? I have been using it for well over a year with only needing to change the batteries about every month and a half. I use Sanyo Eneloop1.2v Ni-MH 2,000 mAH batteries. Yesterday I lost Trackpad connectivity because of a low battery condition, swapped them out with fully charged ones then several hours later the same thing happened. Each time was a different set of batteries. I swapped out the keyboard batteries as well and they are doing fine and registering at 100%. Usage is very light. What is going on?

Same thing here. I had a 2008 iMac for many years with a Magic Track pad, got a new 27" iMac in September with a new trackpad. Running Mavericks and it's eating my batteries like crazy. I go through two a week and i'm only on my computer about 4 hours a week at the most. I used to use my Mac much more than i do now and the batteries would last for almost 4 to 6 months. Alkaline in every case. Something is up. I see lots of people with this problem on the discussion boards.

  • My Magic Trackpad won't do all the Lion gestures.

I can do Swipe between pages and Show Desktop and Launchpad, but not Mission Control or App Expose.  All gestures work on the MB Air 13, but not on the Magic Trackpad.  Any ideas?

I have a similar problem. The zooming  in/out does not work, or is very slow on my iMac 2010.
In preferences all is checked. The swiping of pages is not working.
And comparing with my iPad, the gestures on on my magic trackpad are very poor indeed!
    Not what I expected.

btw: the spelling corrector in this reply is not working, so excuse my spelling and grammar.
Could this be caused by Lion?

  • HT203171 Magic Trackpad fail. It keeps clicking, sticking, selecting everything to the point of unusability. I'm lucky I have my old "mighty" mouse as a back up. SO annoyed right now. What gives anyways? Why did the trackpad just stop working all of a sud

    It's bugging me so bad.
I loved everything about it too, the swiping, gestures and everything are so intuitive. Now, no more thatn 20 minutes ago it just goes crazy. Rebooted the computer. Changed the batteries. Disconnected and reconnected everything. ARGGGGGG.
So lucky I kept an old wireless Might Mouse around, but it feels like being stuck in the past.
    Now I'm really upset.
OK, so that was mostly a rant, but man, I'm really ticked. My productivity has gone down in half! I was very acustomed to the trackpad by now - 1 year after purchasing my iMac... and conveniently AFTER the warranty. Those things are like $70!!!
So far there doesn't seem to be a solution. I know it's not a battery or anything - the trackpad is separate from the computer. Tried cleaning the trackpad several times, and no effect.
    Please help -
    Thanks,

Forget everything I wrote about bluetooth device interference having anything to do with this issue. I was obviously headed down a rabbit trail with this suggestion.
What I've since determined (that is working for me) is to focus in on the small round bumpers on the backside of the trackpad. I suspect that over time these probably loosen and become more sensitive or even stuck. This might explain the auto-selecting in the erratic behavior of the trackpad.
As a workaround, I used a felt cloth (folded several times) to elevate the backside of the trackpad so that the bumpers no longer touch my desk. This takes a loose or stuck bumper switch out of the picture. Then I enabled the trackpad features for "Tap to click" and "Secondary click," which are located at:  System Preference > Trackpad > Point & Click.
Only if you have serious computer repair skills would I advise attempting to adjust the sensitivy of the bumper switch: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairing+Magic+Trackpad+Click+Feature/6171/1
As for myself, I'll be purchasing a new trackpad tomorrow morning. I love this device, but it seems that once the bumpers begin to wear out, they do so quite abruptly, and your best course is to get a replacement before pulling out any hair you still have left.
Again, my apologies about the mis-cue on the bluetooth issue. Good luck!

  • Why won't my Magic TrackPad stay on?

Yesterday I changed the batteries in my Magic TrackPad, now it only blinks green two times, waits a beat, then repeats the green light. In preferences, it says found trackpad, then it states no trackpad found.  It was fine until yesterday.  I have not made any upgrades.  I am using Lion.

  • Sometimes FF loses FPS and starts working very choppy.

From time to time the browser starts working at very low FPS - smooth scrolling gets very choppy, typing in a text box shows the characters with a delay, minimizing/maximizing the FF window is also not smooth. I need to restart FF to make it work smooth again. I have this problem on multiple PCs - the only common thing is the CPU/GPU - Intel/NVIDIA. Tried Safe Mode, resetting FF - doesn't help - at random intervals it just drops to very low FPS. All plugins are up to date, all drivers are the latest. FF 23.0.1. It's as if there is an incompatibility between FF and my machines but can't find where.

Can you reproduce in a new profile?

I have tried to use Epson Scan Software 3.7.9f0 but not compatible with OS X 10.9.5x. There is very little other wireless traffic and I have a fast broadband connection. Thanks

  • WiFi downloads cause Bluetooth Mouse (e.g. Magic Trackpad) to stutter. Why?

    Hi,
i got a magic mouse, a logitech USB mouse and now the magic trackpad. All the bluetooth devices stutter. Move slow and unpredictable. The USB-Mouse does not have this problem.
It only shows up, when using the WiFi heavy. Podcast-downloads or syncing Apple TV that is.
    What may cause this Problem?
    My Setup:
MBP13 late 2009 in desktop Mode
    External Display
    Wired Apple Keyboard
    Firewire 800 external HD
    USB Printer, iPod dock
    Apple Magic Trackpad
    Thanks!

    Hi,
have no solution for it, so far. But have the same issue. It happens when I use the wireless-interface with about >20Mbit/s. My magic mouse stutters and moves really slow until the file-transfer is done.
Hope anyone has a good idea!

  • Magic trackpad question

I posted this question in another section of this site and didnt get a response so I thought Id put it in another section and maybe Ill get a response this time.  Basically, my problem is after my computer goes to sleep and I click a key to wake it up my arrow is frozen and wont move, Ive checked the battery power in my trackpad and my keyboard and they both have plenty of battery power and it shows that my trackpad is connected onscreen yet my arrow still wont move.  I have to mess with turning my trackpad off and on and have to turn my computer off and on again as I have no way of clicking boxes because the arrow wont move.  This has just started happening in the past 2 or 3 days and I havent done anything out of the ordinary.  It finally comes around and starts working but I would like it to work instantly after I click a key to wake my computer up like it used to do for years before this started happening.  Could anyone help me with this and tell me why this may be happening and what I can do to fix it?  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Bluetooth and 802.11b/g (sometimes n) WiFi 2.4GHz frequences.  Also on some Macs the WiFi and Bluetooth antennas are either shared or very close to each other.
So you can have interference from 2.4GHz WiFi.  You can also have interference from 2.4GHz cordless phones (yours or your close neighbors), 2.4GHz baby monitors (yours or your close neighbors), microwave ovens (which also use 2.4GHz frequencies).
As an experiment, when they happens again, turn off your Mac's WiFi (WiFi menu -> Turn Wi-Fi Off.  See if your Magic Trackpad will connect.  Then turn WiFi back on.
If you have the option of use 802.11n 5GHz only WiFi in your home, give that a try (I understand that many handheld devices often only have 2.4GHz WiFi support, so this might ONLY be an experiment).
You could try the suggestions in the following article
    <http://www.computerworld.com/article/2475598/mac-os-x/os-x-mavericks--fixing-wir eless-keyboard-mouse-connections.html>
    You could try deleting
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
    reboot your Mac
Pair all your bluetooth devcies again.
Wild idea, maybe AirDrop is causing problem (not my best idea, so do not assume it will be of any use).

  • Bluetooth lags on new Mac Mini w/ Wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a new mac mini (the basic model) and attached it via HDMI to a HD TV. I bought the mac wireless keyboard and magic trackpad to go with it. Everything works except that both the keyboard and mouse are consistently slow. Not quite to the point of un-useable, but very noticeable.
I've read that it might be radio interference with the bluetooth signal. To test this, I put my Macbook Pro right next to the new mac mini (while it and the screen were on) and paired the keyboard and mouse to the macbook pro. Everything was super fast, no lag - so that leads me to think the problem is with the Mac Mini. I've tried playing with all the bluetooth options, to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? I've also tried attaching a bluetooth magic mouse and had the same slowdown. Nothing seems to affect the lag, it's very consistent and probably around half a second between keystroke or mouse movement and it's reflection on the screen.
    Thanks,
    -Mike

    Hey All,
I've got the same issue with my Mac Book Pro and a new Samsung LED 3D TV. Its connected through a DVI out from the mac to a gold HDMI adaptor, then to HDMI into the TV. I've used this set-up with my last HDTV which was a Sharp LCD, and there was no lag and no issues.
I noticed that for me, the lag appeared on the TV, but not on the laptop, so I thought it might be the connection (If I went right to HDMI instead of an adaptor maybe it'd be better) but I don't think it is given that the last TV worked fine.
I then went to my display settings in the control panel on my mac and changed the refresh rate from 24 Hertz to 60 Hertz (NTSC) on the TV and the issue has pretty much completely dissappeared. Not sure why that was the default, but I imagine certain video and other media will play even smoother as well!
    Woo hoo!
Hope you all figure this out too!

  • Unable to pair previously paired Magic Trackpad

I've had my Magic Trackpad previously paired with my other MacBook Pro without issues.
I reformatted it and installed Mountain Lion on it, without unpairing first.
My wife inherited my old MacBook Pro once I got my new MacBook Pro Retina.
Now I wish to pair the Magic Trackpad with my Retina but it's never discovered!
It's got a fresh pair of batteries and the green light comes on but it never starts to blink.
I tried it on my old MacBook and it has the same issues.
Tried both System Preferences / Trackpad & Bluetooth - same result.
    Help?
    Thanks!
    /J

Yes, I'm aware that it has a built in trackpad...
I'm using my MacBook on an mStand sometimes and it wouldn't be very ergonomic if did'nt use a external mouse... ;-)
