Why is my new USB Superdrive unsupported?

Since my iMac Matshita Superdrive  will not read CDs I have bought a USB Superdrive but find that it is "Unsupported".
Both failures are quite incredible but it would be nice to get a solution for one of them.

You're absolutely right and Apple deserves a bunch of dislikes for producing such a limited product and failing to show a warning on the box.  The so-called work around is too much for me and I don't suppose it would work on my Intel Mac mid 2007 anyway.
Many thanks for your follow up.

  • Why is my new USB Superdrive not working?

When I connect my new USB superdrive (external disc drive) to my iMac, it doesn't show on my list of devices in Finder or on the desktop.  I took it back to the store and it works on the store's iMacs. My eReader and USB memory stick both work.
Is there something I have to set in Preferences or software I have to load?

What year is your Mac? Is this the one you got?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive#overview-4
It only works with the new 2012 iMacs (which would explain why it works with the Macs in the store) and a couple of other models.
You could try an SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    and reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
If that does not help and yours is a late 2012, then I have no answer for you except that unless someone else chimes in with one, I'd call Apple if you're still covered by the warranty or go back to the store.
Additionally, my LaCie external burner does not show on the desktop unless I have a disk inserted.

  • HT2801 i cannot get my macbook to see my new usb superdrive?

I cannot get my macbook to see my new apple
    usb superdrive

The newest version Apple USB SuperDrive is restricted in usefulness
to those computer models that did not ship with internal optical drives.
Is your situation similar to one cited here(?)
•USB SuperDrive not working as a secondary optical drive...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20797883#20797883
While it has been said the firmware is such to disallow use of these
Apple USB superdrives w/ Mac computers an internal optical drive.
The iFixit.com site had a suggestion about that, so it may not be
totally true. However any changes to the USB SuperDrive may void
a warranty if you mess it up, or tamper with its design...
    •Apple USB SuperDrive  Repair - iFixit.com:

...note second answer in first question, affirmative
and the situation is conditional. It may not work
this idea uses Terminal to change how its seen...
A better answer is to get another brand that works as a superdrive
for Macs and can also read/write media, boot system discs, and
more than a few are good too, if you travel and need to change
the region code to watch DVDs. Less costly, more disposable.
Third party models work as external optical drive when OEM failed.
LG, LaCie, & other USB external superdrives had been said to work.
PS: you could also consider the iFixit page on repairing the original
internal optical drive of your MacBook, or OWC may have video as
well as replacement parts, and so on.
So there are a few possible answers.
Perhaps more than one may work.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Why won't my USB Superdrive take my dvd?

I have tried to put a disc into my USB Superdrive, but all it does is make a weird noise and spit it out. The disc contains files, and if I try it with a dvd it does not happen. It is not urgent. But I would like to know why it happens.
    THANK YOU!!!

The your supredrive has failed. If it is still covered by a warranty take it to an Apple store to be diagnosed and replaced or if you have no warranty on it just buy any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port. That is any brand. It does not have to have the Apple name on it for it to work on your Mac.

  • Having problems with my new usb superdrive in my MBP retina display.

I just bought an apple usb superdrive for my new MBP retina display. I connected the usb superdrive to the MBP and I was going to install a program but doesn't appear in the desktop or neither in finder. The disk is still inside the usb superdrive! The MBP doesn't recognize the usb superdrive. What do I do now? The disk is still inside!

With the system turned on Disconnect the superdrive and then reconnect it. If that fails try the other USB port, the one on the other side.
If That Fails take the system and the superdrive to the Apple store you bought them from and have them fix whatever is wrong with either the drive or the system or both.

  • Why has my USB Superdrive suddenly stopped working with my MacBook Pro?

Why has my Apple USB SuperDrive suddenly stopped working with my MacBook Pro?
Normally I plug it in and insert a CD or DVD and it is immediately recognised, but today it took the DVD, made a 'whirring' noise for a few seconds and then stopped without being recognised.

Try the options on this list:

    Try 1 and 5.

  • I,ve bought a new USB Super Drive and have plugged it in, but can't get the disc ejected from the drive.

I've bought a new USB SuperDrive, but don't know how to set it up.  HAve put the cd in the machine, but now cannot eject it!

Have a look here for some suggestions for ejecting a stuck disk:

  • USB Superdrive - has accepted a disk but wont do anything?

I have eventually managed to get my new USB Superdrive to just take a disk.  But now it doesn't do anything with it?? I can't eject the disk because I can't find any controls for the superdrive?  I'm becoming increasingly frutrated with it, my software is up todate i've no idea what to do?

That is completely false and whoever told you that they were flat out lying to you.
Simple fact is you can use any brand/make and model external CD/DVD drive that connects by USB port with Any Mac computer.
I have 3 of them. One an Asus that comes in it own case with a Y USB cable, A bare notebook size drive I bought from Newegg.com that I use a SATA to USB adapter that I got from someplace (it is made to fit the smaller, closer together, SATA data & power ports on notebook size DVD drives) and a notebook size DVD drive that came out of my Dell E6420 notebook so I could install a second hard drive in that notebook.
All of them work with the Macbook Pro I have, a 15" late 2011 model, and with any other computer I have.
So I suggest you take that drive back to where ever you bought it and retuirn it for a Refund. Then buy any, and I do really nean ANY, other make and model External DVD drive that connects by USB. It Will work, work better then the Superdrive and cost less.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

  • Usb superdrive will only eject discs, connected to macbook pro

new usb superdrive connected to new macbook pro, superdrive will not read discs, just ejects discs.

    Hello wwboa
For issues with your SuperDrive not reading the disks and spitting them back out, check out the troubleshooting below to get it working for you.
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Regards,
    -Norm G.

  • Usb superdrive installation?

Just wondering how to use my new USB Superdrive to play CD's. Is there some sort of installation process. It came with no instructions.

Try another CD, if it's a music CD then open iTunes and you can import the music into iTunes and store it on your computer. However without know what is on the CD I am just guessing. Perhaps a complete post with what you are attempting to do and the version of OS X installed would be helpful

  • Why does my Macbook pro 1226 not work with my new Apple USB Superdrive? USB works otherwise but when I connected my new drive it clicks and then thats it. I put the DVD in but it doesn't grab it or attempt to access it at all.

    Hi Everone,
I purchased my 2007 Macbook pro 1226 online for a song and other than this annoyance i've been very satisfied. But lately i'm missing the use of my internal super drive to view DVD's (Always seem to miss what we don't have Grrr). So I figured I would purchase a brand new USB Apple Superdrive, problem solved right? NOPE. Now I've found that my pro doesnt seem to like it one bit and all USB's work fine so it's not that.
I will be disapointed if this can not be resolved, My Macbook is otherwise perfect and better than any new PC I've ever had.
Can Someone try and help me please?

I do know that for new MBPs there is a no questions asked return policy if returned within 14 days of purchase.  I am not certain if that applies for peripherals.  If you have not damaged it, I would think that the odds are on your side if you return it for a refund.  Obviously you have a good reason for the return.
Then it may be a good reason to purchase a new MBP.    In any event, call the store and ask.
    Ciao.

  • I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live were we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need.

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.

Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.
