Why is my password required for printing?

Hi everyone,
I just got a brand new Mac Pro and I’m a bit puzzled about some of the security loops it makes me jump through. I didn’t mess much with the security settings, besides having to fix some permissions to share files with my MacBook, so I feel I’m unlikely to have caused this behavior.
I was thus surprised (and annoyed) when I attempted to print and was asked each time to enter my password. The printer is connected to a Windows XP machine on a home network. I regularly use this printer with my MacBook and never have to enter any password. I must admit that there’s a chance I may have been asked for my password the first time I printed, and decided to store it in my keychain, and this could explain why I’m never asked for it. I just don’t remember.
Nevertheless, my question is whether it is standard for a new Mac Pro to ask me for my password when printing on such a setup. Is the only remedy to this to include the password in the keychain?
By the way, storing passwords for printers, web sites, etc., in a keychain is pretty unsafe unless access to my computer is password-protected, right?
Comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hiya, Jon99 from Midwest,
I am surprised that printing asks you for your password. I have printed for a long time BOTH on USB AND wirelessly via my WPA2 hidden network. Never has the printer asked me for a password! On a PC, I would suspect a virus, but I have not heard of that for a Mac (there only about 40 as opposed to 10's of thousands on PC's).
The only explanation, I would be able to think of is if it a shared network printer because yours "belongs" to another machine (PC); so it maybe that it is not your mac asking for a password to print, but your mac asks you to access your (hopefully) secure PC. And, yes, you probably stored your password on your macbook keychain. why don't you try and print again, and check the "details" of what keychain actually wants (it's 3/4 down the window and click on details).
Mac only normally asks for passwords for installation of programs, maybe in mail receiving/sending problems, or airport or similar.

  • Why Data Sort is required for Merge Join Transformation

    hi,
In my understanding Merge Join works very similar to T SQL joins. But I am trying to understand why Sort is a compulsory requirement? I have looked into following article but not helpful
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms137653(v=sql.105).aspx
    aamertaimor
    aamertaimor

Merge Join is going to walk through two sets in the order that you gave in your input or using the Sort transformation. So, it loads one record from one input and one record from the second input.  If the keys match, it will output the row with information
from both inputs.  If the left input has a value that is less than the value in right input, then either the row from the left input is sent out with no right input information (if there is an outer join) or if the join is an inner join, the
Merge Join component will get the next row from Left input.  If the right input has a value that is less than the value that in the left input, then if there is a full outer join, output the right input with no left input information otherwise, get the
next row from the right input.
Here is the beauty, SSIS only needs to retain a couple rows in memory.
What if Microsoft decided that there is no requirement for sorting?  Then in order for the Merge join to work is that it would load all of the rows from one input into memory and then the Merge Join would look up the row in memory.  That means
a large amount of memory would be needed.
By the way, if you want Merge Join behavior without the sort, use a Lookup component.

  • Why XL line cards required for OTV?

According to Cisco's website, there are specific types of line cards required to support OTV on N7K (N7K-8 port 10GbE with XL options, or N7K-48 port 10/100/1000 Module with XL option).
Q1: Do I have to use the physical ports on those line cards to make OTV related interfaces? Can I use logical interfaces, and use physical ports on those line cards for non-OTV connectivity, such as used as a layer 2 access port?
Q2: Since OTV feature is enabled globally, why the requirements for specific line cards in the first place? What the features/services provided by the line cards for OTV operations?
    Thanks.

Has anyone seen design docs that suggest using 10-Gig ports for the OTV interfaces? I know the Q&A indicates support for all M1 line cards (not F1 or F2), but I'm wondering if there's any clearly defined design reason for not using the 1-G line cards for this (such as the N7K-M148GS-11L).
I'm basically asking if it would be recommended (for a system with no additional open 10-G ports) to purchase another 10-G blade (such as the N7K-M108X2-12L at $27), or could we do the job with spare ports on an existing 1-G card?  I've been through several docs, and while none of them indicate 10-G connectivity is mandatory, I'm hoping for a reason why Cisco might be pushing/recommending this for any size of OTV deployment.
    Thank you.

  • Password required for Mail?

I open up my Mail icon, and a window pops up that says, Cannot Send Mail, no password provided for user (my email address) of server (my server address).
Please go to Mail Account Settings and enter a password.
Question-How do I go to Mail Account Settings and enter a password? I cannot find this area?
Please help, and thank you in advance for your consideration.
    iPhone   Windows XP

    maniac,
are you talking about the settings on the iphone or settings in itunes or mail? When you say "go back up into user name box and make a change", what kind of change are you talking about?
My issue is similar: I cannot send mail from my POP account (.mac works fine), and the error "address was rejected by the server" showed up each time, and the password field in SMTP on iPhone keeps reverting back to "Optional" no matter how many times I enter it, save it, whatever.
I spent an hour with Apple last week. The tech had me do a software restore, and advised me NOT to sync my mail. This worked.
While this is a good workaround (I got it to work), this is in the longer term unacceptable as it's a pain in the butt to delete mail (no group select of mail???) from the iPhone.
But I'd like to know more about this workaround you mention.

  • Scanned handwriting in Tiff - DPI/pixel dimensions requirements for Printing

    Namaste'
I am preparing to have a book printed of my Teacher's sayings in His own handwriting from His diaries.
The sayings were in ballpoint pen and some 20 years old.
We scanned them by a Greyscale hand scanner in 300dpi.
I have since cleaned and cropped them, so the 300 dpi standard is no longer there.
Since they are old, done with ball pen and not very thick, it is not realistic to take them "out" of their context, so they are on white background.
When I look at the scans info, it says 400dpi (the handwriting and the white background) but when I look at what the pixel dimensions say, they are all under 1 mb, mostly in the 300's to 700's k.
    I do not understand this.
    I was told 240dpi smallest.
What is the relation of pixel dimension to dpi? And how do I know this is enough?
Can anyone help clear this up for me?
When I take them down to the local printer and run them on their machine, for testing,  the images look fine.
    I am using PSCS3.
    Thank you.
    A-Girl

When I scan linework art like signatures, handwriting, pen-and-ink drawings, etc., I set the scanner for 2400 PPI at print size, 1-bit/lineart/monochromatic/bw mode (your scanner software should call it one of these, the important bit is that it is NOT greyscale mode).
The reason for this is most imagesetters and platesetters output at either 2400 or 2540 DPI, so scanning at or close to the output resolution provides the crispest appearance. If you are outputting to a laser printer or other desktop device you could scan at its output resolution, 600 for example, but a 2400 PPi 1-bit file is not large at all so why not "future proof" your scans so if you get them professionally output later they are at maximum quality.
Using a 1-bit file eliminates any soft edges as you would have with a greyscale image, and 1-bits can easily be made to have a transparent background so placing them into a layout is a piece of cake.
My best advice to you is to detemine your output size, then re-scan at 2400 PPI at the correct size.
To your other question, pixel dimensions refers to the actual number of pixels in the image,  and is the only true measurement of resolution for a digital image.  Until you determine the print size PPI (pixels per inch) is irrelevant, and the PPI will change based on the output size: if you have an image that is 2000 pixels wide and you  print it at 10 inches then your PPI is 200 (2000 / 10). If you output at  5 inches then the PPI is 400 (2000 / 5).
DPI (dots per inch) refers to the resolution of an output device. The two are commonly used to mean the same thing, but they are not synonyms -- digital images contain only pixels, never dots, and printers output with dots, never pixels.

  • Username and Password Required for Wifi Connection, Not Being Asked for Username

I just updated my iphone 4s to ios 8 and attempted to join my school's wireless network, which requires both a username and a password. i am being asked for a password but not a username.
my question here is how to have the username be requested as well.

Hi, did you ever find a solution to this?  I see your post is old, but the exact same thing has happened to me and I can't figure out what the generic username and password would be.  Any insight you have would be most helpful. Thanks!

  • Admin password required for stopped queue

I am running 10.5.4 iMac G5 clients and 10.5.5 servers at my schools. We use mostly GCC 12 series laser printers with a few HP models of varying vintages thrown in. My users are experiencing frequent pauses or stops of their print queues. They are unable to restart the queues themselves, I must go in with my admin password to restart their queues. I've been told this is not a bug but a purposeful function of the OS. Is this true? Also, is there any way around it? I am going crazy just trying to keep up with all the print queues that need to be reset every day! Also, any idea what is causing printers to stall on even simple jobs? It seems to be happening far more often than it used to on my old 10.3 clients, even on simple Appleworks documents.

I found a possible solution at the macosxhints, haven't tried it yet as only one of my Macs is on 10.5.5 so far. I'll post back if it works, though a few posts have been made to that solution with success so far.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20081107092520601
Here's the text from the link:
Mac OS X 10.5 requires you to enter an administrator's password to pause/resume a print queue, where no previous version of OS X has done so. This is extremely annoying in a lab setting -- if there's a paper jam or something, the queues on all the computers need to be restarted by an administrator, instead of the user just clicking Resume. I haven't seen a solution to this elsewhere, so here's what I came up with:
    1. As root, or in a Terminal session with su privileges, edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
    2. Find this section:
    <Limit Pause-Printer Resume-Printer Enable-Printer Disable-Printer Pause-Printer-After-Current-Job Hold-New-Jobs Release-Held-New-Jobs Deactivate-Printer Activate-Printer Res
    tart-Printer Shutdown-Printer Startup-Printer Promote-Job Schedule-Job-After CUPS-Accept-Jobs CUPS-Reject-Jobs>
    AuthType Default
    Require user @AUTHKEY(system.print.admin) @admin @lpadmin
    Order deny,allow
    </Limit>
    3. Remove the items you don't want limited: Pause-Printer, Resume-Printer, Pause-Printer-After-Current-Job, etc.
    4. Save the file, quit the editor, and restart your computer.
After restarting, you should be able to pause/resume the print queue as any user. Hope this helps, it was annoying the heck out of me.

  • Security Issues - No password required for unsleeping and screensaver

I checked the box under security to 'require password when waking from sleep/screensaver' or whatever its called. It worked fine for like 2 weeks...i activate screensaver or sleep the laptop and have to put in a password to get out of it. Now when I wake or unsleep it, no password is required...what can I do? I cannot find any pattern or installation/change I made to cause this at all.
MacBook Pro 1.83 with OS 10.4.6 (all latest updates and firmware)

I deleted 3 plist preference files, the checkbox still remained for the require password option. I did a reboot and the checkbox was still there, and didnt work properly. I did the uncheck/check deal and blam...started to work properly again. Thanks for your help!

  • VPN Password Required for Each Connection

    Hi,
You need to upgrade the excel addin to 9.3.1.3 as it resolves the following issue
Spreadsheet Add-in. In the Login dialog box, Essbase was not storing non-default port information.
If Essbase was listening on a non-default port, that information was not being saved after having
previously connected successfully. Upon subsequent logins, it was necessary to re-enter the nondefault
server and port numbers; it was not saved in the Server drop-down list. Additionally, after a
successful connection on one sheet, re-connection was necessary after switching to another sheet
    when a non-default port was used. [7118611, 7298976]
    Ok?

  • Nuisance--- admin password required for Onyx or Cocktail

I don't use an Admin password, but OS 10.74 requires a password, not a blank password, so run Cocktail or Onyx.  I enjoy having no password, and no one else uses my laptop.   It's a nuisance to add a password, run Cocktail or Onyx, then delete the password in Prefs.   The authors of these two utilities assert that Apple requires a password, not the authors of these two fine utilities.
Anyone know a workaround so the password space can be blank ?

    MacPcConsultant wrote:

Administrator user accounts that have a blank password (that is, no characters at all for the password) will be unable to use sudo functions in Terminal.
    =====================
Yep.  I knew that.  But that doesn't mean it's convenient or judicious or necessary.   While Apple has made some improvements in Apps and OS, there is a growing list of issues.
Your specific issue is that you don't wish to have a password. That is fine, but do not expect everything to work in your favour just because of your decision to be lazy. Third Party Apps are NOT Apple's responsibility. It is up to them to keep up to date.
Unfortunately for you, it IS necessary to have a password to access Terminal.
If you believe that Apple should have a User Option for this, then tell them. We don't write the software.

  • Password required for Apple ID....but email address changed since created. Password forgotten.

MY mum was just browsing the web when a message popped up saying....sing in to iCloud. enter the Apple ID password for (her email address). The problem is that she has changed her email address since creating her iCloud account.  She can't remember the password anyway, but when it prompts her to change password if she can't remember it, it doesn't work because it obviously sends the link to that listed, but now old, email address.  This message won't clear, so she can't do anything on her iPad. If she tries to cancel the message, it just pops up again.
    any ideas gratefully welcome!

Does she have any way at all of accessing the old email account?

    Hi All,
I have the ServiceDesk Appliance installed and trying to set it up.
I am now at Setup > Email > Server. Here in the "Receiving" section, what exactly do I need the "UserName"/"Password" for?
Can I use and existing username? or do I need a have a separate Username dedicated for the ServiceDesk?

    Yaser,
I will usually create an account specific for Service Desk. This is the user
account that will authenticate and Pop the mail form your mail
system(GroupWise..:-) ) back into the Service Desk application.
    Hope that helps
