Why is my phone only backing up to icloud every 24 hours?

I have noticed recently that my phone only backs up to icloud about every 24 hours, regardless of when I have it plugged in and locked. For the last several weeks, it is backing up about 3 minutes later than it backed up the day before. This is getting to be a problem because it has reached the point that I am sometimes awake and needing to use my phone at the time it wants to back up. The last time this happened, the last backup showed as being "Unavailable" When this happens I can still run a manual backup, so it's not a huge problem, just strange since it used to backup within a few minutes of plugging it in. Any ideas?

Not sure what to tell you. Per Apple:
Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in Settings > iCloud > Backup & Storage, it will run on a daily basis...

Perhaps what you were seeing before was an attempt to complete a backup that was interrupted before it finished.

If you have a new iphone, icloud has probably made a backup of your previous iphones. I had the same problem yesterday when backing up my new iphone. Just delete the backup of your previous iphones (if that's the case ofcourse) and it should be fine.

No problem I replied, as it should have backed up on iCloud, however she then advised that the iCloud storage full message had been showing recently but was not sure for how long it had been there. In 3 years I never synched my calendar to iCloud for fear I would lose my data. I explained all of this (and the fact that my phone had never been backed up to iCloud or iTunes to the tech at the Genius Bar (I was having wifi issues with my phone which is why I was there so I COULD START BACKING UP) and he assured me synching / merging to iCloud would not delete my calendar events: well, it did. Yes! I have spent hours with apple tech support and had my iTunes account in "troubleshoot " status so the engineers could go into iCloud to see if they could retrieve events. They found nothing. I just don't understand where it goes if it's on the phone? I know there are ways forensic engineers retrieve "lost " data on cell phones. I just thought it might be worth it to post on here and see if there is any hope .

Not the same thing, don't confuse a backup of your phone with an iCloud data account. Backup is a separate function.

Many users have lost photos while preforming a restore from backup or upgrading the iOS. Recall, only photos in the camera roll are backed up to iCloud. There is a way to turn backups for camera roll on/off, perhaps these users had camera roll turned off.

IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream. If using Photo stream, but sure to move the received photos to a permanent album. If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
Or, you can find other apps in the app store that send camera roll photos to a service like Dropbox.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered. I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure".

Apps are not part of the backup. In app data is, but backing up the apps would be redundant as they can be re-downloaded from the store for free. Media (music, movies, podcasts, etc.) are also not part of the backup for the same reason.

Is there a way to back up one folder automatically to a hard drive the way Time Machine backs up an entire hard drive? I have a 20 Gig external that I would like to back up a single folder's data files automatically every hour.

Do you mean independently of Time Machine or do you mean also with TM? If the latter then simply exlude everything on the second drive except the one folder.

I'm having the same exact issue. I have the same phone/OS. Just switched from AT&T to Verizon so I wasn't sure whether it was my service or the phone. The same connectivity issues are happening to me with things like My Fitness Pal or Facebook notifications. Fitness app won't load or connect and for Facebook, I'll get a notice that I have one, I go to FB and it won't load the notifications or even load new stories on there for that matter. So AGAIN, I have to restart and POOF! I can use FB, Fitness App, etc AND I have 20 emails all of a sudden. So frustrating!

Sorry to just now be getting back to you, but with Thanksgiving and my granddaughter's wedding yesterday, I've been too busy and stressed to worry about my phone again until now.
Yes, I used the default email application, and the email provider is Cox Communications. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated. Also I was wondering if I should change to IMAP (from POP3)....perhaps that would help the problem? Don't know, as I don't know anyone else who uses IMAP. Your help, again, would be appreciated.

Why is the phone asking me for my icloud info and its showing an email i dont recognize automatically? did i get a refurbished phone?

i got a new iphone 5s at the beginning of september and it has been malfunctioning. today i went to apple and the genius gave me a "new" phone but when it asked to login into icloud it automatically showed another users email address that i dont recognize. he said it was normal because other people are using the internet in the store- i dont understand what that has to do with it. so now im at home uploading my info and the icloud continues to ask me for that random email's password. so did i get a refurbished phone? Also, if this is a new phone, why dont i have the u2 playlist like the new iphone i had bought last month?

Well, you could always start all over again and see if you can get it to go away. Go to Settings>iCloud, and turn off Find My iPhone, then go to Settings>Reset>Reset all Content and Settings. That will erase the device.
Then set it up again from the Hello screen, and either restore it from a backup (if you have one), or hook it up to iTunes on the computer you sync with and download your data from there. If Wifi is your only option, then, of course, you can do it from there, but the backup or iTunes route would be quicker.

I am trying to back up my new Iphone on to ICloud. It shows I dont have enough storage because it still has stuff from the old IPhone. How can I back up this phone and erase from the other. Apple kept the other phone when they replaced it. If I hit the delete storage for the other phone (which shows up on the Icloud Icon on this phone) will I lose everything on this phone? That's what I want to avoid....

If it's corrupt, generally it would be lost.
However, there is third-party software out there that can retrieve some of the data, those of which however I could not recommend as I have never done so myself.
Also, if the old 4S was running a more recent software version than the current 4S, that may cause the issue however usually iTunes tells you exactly that.

Sorry, I don't understand the first bit, but if your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
