Why is my phone "Searching..." constantly?

I purchased an iPhone 5 on pre-order day, and have had it now for a few weeks.  A few days ago, I noticed my service flicker from "Searching..." to "No Service" to "Verizon LTE".  I didn't think much of it, but in a few moments, it happened again.  And again.  And again.  Finally, my service went from 5 bars to 0, then "Searching...".  I left the phone alone for a while thinking there was maintenance being done on a tower, however, over the course of a few hours, I was still getting the "Searching..." message.  I've tried popping out the SIM card and re-seating it, I've tried resetting network settings, power cycling, hard rebooting (home and wake/sleep together until it resets)...  I have noticed however, that when I pop the SIM card out now, I don't get a "No SIM" message.  I just get a "Searching..." message.
I managed to get service back after a few hours of wondering, and a restore from backup (which was a fight in itself).  However, my phone has once again fallen silent, even though it was working perfectly fine yesterday.
Did I do something?  I've only dropped my phone once, and it was onto a carpeted surface from about knee high, so I highly doubt that was the cause.  Is it a SIM card problem?  I know it's not a service problem as my wife's phone (iPhone 5 on the same plan) is working flawlessly (and she's dropped hers a few times already).
Did I just get a defective model?  This is extremely frustrating, and my work requires that I have a phone, so the faster this can be answered, the better!!

    I know that its frustrating to have issues with your phone when you need to contact a friend or family member. Not know if it will connect is very upsetting. I'm sorry the mentioned suggestions did not work. Lets try removing and reinserting the SIM card to help with your issues. Make sure the phone is powered off first. Here are some steps? Also, whats your zipcode? We can check the area to look for any reported problems. Are the issues occuring inside or outside? At home only or when you leave the area? Is the phone damaged? Lets start with these few simple questions and we can get this resolved together. Keep us posted.

    The iPhone includes a one year warranty. If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare and handle an exchange under warranty over the phone. The exchange will be shipped to your door - someone must sign for the delivery so if no one will be at home, have it delivered where you work. You use the same box to return the existing iPhone back to Apple. Return shipping label and tape to reveal the box incuded - call the carrier with number incuded when the box is ready to be picked up. AppleCare will request a credit card in the event the existing iPhone is not returned within 10 days after the exchange under warranty is received.
    Hardware can fail - it happens, which is why there is a one year warranty.

    Still it could not find the data network.it searches for voice network instantly and works too. but even full voice network available, there is no data network.when i restart the phone it could find data network.
    Already i reset network settings for two times.

    Here are a couple resources that have some helpful troubleshooting steps for this issue. 
    Resolution
    If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
    If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
    If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
    If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
    If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
    Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
    If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
    If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
    If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
    Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.

    If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.

    When you set up the new phone did you set it up as "restore from an icloud backup" or did you set up the phone as a "new phone" and then signed in with your apple id? If you chose "restore from an ic,oud backup" then there might be something wrong with your icloud backup. You can try restoring the phone as "erase all contents and settings" and when it asks you how you're setting up your phone you can chose "set up as new iphone" and then sign in with your apple id and you should get your contact synced over at least. You can then go to the itunes store and app store to manually download your purchases. Or you can plug in your old phone to your computer and use itunes to "back up to my computer" and once that is done you can plug in your new phone to your computer and use itunes to "restore from a bckup". Hopefully that is more helpful.
    Also, what exactly did the Apple Store say as to why they "couldn't help you"?

    Tons of people have this problem with iPhone 4S and 5, whether they are on iOS 6 or 7. You can only hope that one day Apple realizes that this bug (software ? hardware ?) is a *real* pain. So far, they haven't paid attention.

    I was having the same problem. Did a hard reboot (hold power and home buttons both down until the phone shuts off).
    That did the trick.

    Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
    If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

    It helped earlier but it has come back again. I don't know what to do. I tried what you said earlier but this time even this is not working either. And quite intrestingly my phone won't turn off. I turn it off, it goes off and then restarts on its own and then keep giving the same message again and again.
    Could it be a charging cable, is there any chance that the cable which was working fine one day could turn to be "incompatible" with iphone the other day????????

    Basic troubleshooting:
    1)  Quit all open Apps: double-click the Home button.  Hold one of the apps in the Switcher bar until they begin to wiggle.  tap the red minus in the corner of each app until they are all gone.
    2)  reset your phone: hold botht eh Home and Sleep buttons for about 10 seconds.  If the "Slide to turn off" slider appears, ignore it.  Keep holding the buttons until the screen goes black, then the Apple logo appears. (note, this will NOT affect any data on your phone, it;s more like a hard reboot)

    Try Adobe Reader instead of Preview.
    The basic problem is that the pdf format is not reliable for searching, and sometimes even copy/pasting non-Latin text.  Depending on how it is produced, the internal representation of the text can easily become useless garbage.

    You said, "the 4 also has signal and wifi whereas the 5 has only wifi". By "signal", I'm assuing that you mean cellular signal. If so, that means your iPhone 4 is still active on your cellular number and your iPhone 5 is not. Contact your carrier to sort out which phone is active on your account.
