Why is my primary drive gone?

I've just noticed that my primary hard drive is gone from Finder. It shows all the external drivers and my idisk but no primary drive. Which means I can't get to my root folder unless I go to a terminal window.
I'm trying to backup files to a DVD and its also not showing me the dvd drive when I insert a new DVD into the slot.
Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?
Thanks,
glenn

That means there is no Finder comment. Oddly enough for the first time I actually had a drive disappear "on its own" without me doing anything to make it so. I was running the 10.5.4 system updater on my backup drive, and when the computer restarted my usual startup drive had become invisible. The SetFile command would not work. I had to use the chflags command to reset to visible.
If you are running from your startup drive, and it is the startup drive that is invisible, try using this command:
sudo chflags nohidden /
You'll be asked for your password, type it carefully as nothing will be shown on the screen as you type. Hit Return again. It may be necessary to log out and in, or relaunch the Finder, to once again see the drive in the Finder.

  • Weird: why would a network drive named "time-capsule-de" with an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor appear on my home network?

Weird: why would a network drive with the name "time-capsule-de" and an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor suddenly appear on my home network?
It happened shortly after I'd set up a new Time Capsule with our iMac and had transferred the configuration for it over from my old Time Capsule.
I'd just taken the old Time Capsule into another room and powered it up with my MacBook  to confirm that Airport Utility's wiping of its settings hadn't affected the old Time Machine backups still stored in it.
I was in the process of tinkering to see how I could use the old Time Capsule, when Airport Utility offered to "extend" my home network, so I tried that setting, and then got a warning that the old Time Capsule and its wifi networks were not yet secure or private.  While I was working to fix that, I noticed that in the Finder sidebar and in my Network settings, this mysterious "time-capsule-de" (with an odd old-fashioned PC monitor for an icon) had appeared.  I tried to click on it, but could not access it.  I also could not eject it.  I shut down my old Time Capsule and my MacBook.  When I turned the laptop back on, "time-capsule-de" was gone.
What do you all make of that?  Should I worry about the security of my home network?  I live in an apartment development, so there are more than a dozen stray wifi signals pouring in from other units.
I'd welcome any thoughts or suggestions.  Thanks!

What is the name of your old Time Capsule? Did you change the name to the new one?
It appears in Finder .. that is to be expected.. it is after all a network drive.. and it has PC symbol more than likely because you are using Mavericks which defaults to SMB network.. ie the computer thinks it is a windows computer.
There is nothing bad or sinister going on.. but you certainly need to ensure your own wireless network is secure..
    That is otherwise all fine.
If the TC shows up again, check that it is also in the airport utility and check its MAC address with the label on the bottom.. It will show in the Utility .. then you can compare and check you are reading the right thing.

  • Why is the "Partition" tab gone from my Disk Utility???

Why is the "Partition" tab gone from my Disk Utility? How do I partition a disk?

    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc One if you are trying to partition your startup drive and after the installer loads select your language then click on the Continue button. After the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are trying to partition an external drive or a non-startup drive then simply open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Does a secondary SATA drive failure affect the primary drive?

I have two internal drives, and the secondary drive failed. The system would not boot until I removed the secondary drive. Why would the secondary drive failure affect the primary drive?

A severely corrupt directory on any drive can prevent booting from hard drives and even DVD and CDs that otherwise should boot because the system still 'looks' to see if and where other system drives are located.
That can require pulling the drive in order to boot, put it in a Firewire or USB case, and only after the system is up - and maybe Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro launched - connect the drive.
Just one more reason to keep backups of your drives, and multiple boot drives (working backup, test system, emergency only, are good to have).
Why it is failing is another matter, need for a good solid UPS (I was doing an install that takes 45 minutes when we had an outage, probably due to severe weather and strain on the grid). Luckily I have extra runtime.

  • I have just installed a 2 tera drive  in additional drive bay I would like to use it as my starup  or primary drive. Help... I need to transfer data...

I have installed a 2 tera bit drive in second drive bay. The starup drive is small. How do I transfer data and make new drive the startup or primary drive.. Thanks. In addition I will be pulling the small drive and installing a new larger drive a s back up. Also I need to initalize the new drive.. Wow.. O.K. I know that you are out there and can guide me. Merry Christmas to you all.. Many Thanks   Dennis

I suggest you download either CCC or SuperDuper.
Then clone the current system disk to the new system disk.
Reboot from the new disk after the clone is complete.
If everything is running correctly, you can then erase the old system disk.

  • How to make new Maxtor 500 GB the primary drive on my G5

I filled my 160 hd which came with my G5 1.8 Mhz with applications and Iphoto pics. Now that am shooting raw, even larger files. I would like to use Photoshop and Lightroom, new upgrades are available, but my Hd has only 14GB left. I use backup to external hd , but don't know how to retrieve lost IPhoto pics (library) nor my Photoshop pics which I had given batch names, and file information to.
I tried putting the utility disc in thinking after installing the HD it wouod be recognized and I could proceed to install Tiger, partition a bootable drive, etc. I need a good reference. My books are to vague. I wrote another post on this topic and cannot find it anywhere??? Please refer me to any good reference articles in the apple database or other posts with people upgrading their internal hard drives. I want to be able to use all my apps from the biggest drive. I have been putting photoshop images into external drive and deleting from my primary drive to make space and limp on with barely any memory in my startup disc. What do people do when using big hog programs and large images files?

Swapping and adding a hard drive is asked almost daily.
Downloaded and read the pdf guide to SuperDuper and then use it for backups.

  • Enabling RAID on primary drive

I've installed 2 1TB drives as a secondary storage array within my MacPro. Now, I'd like to turn on mirroring for the primary (boot) drive. So far, it seems like I will have to establish a Mirror between two drives and then clone my primary drive back to the mirror.
One would think that you could just plug in a second drive and tell the software to mirror the existing primary to it..... but I cannot find anywhere where things are that simple.
I hope I'm wrong and that I will not have to restore to a new mirror. Tho, if I can boot from an external drive, it may not be so bad as I could just clone back to the mirrored set once it is setup.

A startup volume cannot be included in a RAID because creating the RAID erases both volumes. You have to create a RAID, then install OS X on the resulting RAID.
I might add that it's not a good idea to use a RAID as your startup volume. For more information on RAIDs see the following:
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs. Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?
