Why is my router forcing NTP to run with VRF?
Strange issue here, I've never seen this before in ios.
Trying to set up a Cisco 2811 router to run as an NTP server. I will point this router to an external NTP source (GPS) for time.
When I go into config mode, and try to issue the ntp server command, the ios will not allow me to set it up in global mode - it is forcing me to specify a VRF. This is the ONLY option:
#ntp server vrf [WORD] 1.2.3.4 <cr>
I want to just have a simple global config, i.e.: #ntp server 1.2.3.4. <cr>
There are no VRFs configured on this router at all. This is just a basic router.
Any ideas? It's a Cisco 2811 running c2800nm-advipservicesk-mz.124-15.T9.bin

Good idea. I just entered the command without asking for hints and it took it. Seems to be working! Maybe this ios has a bug in the hints function.

Why does airport express force me 2go wired with my laptop-to-netgear setup
This is what I had and wanted to do: My laptop was connected wirelessly to my netgear router. i wanted to have airport express join my wireless network. after many many hours of trial and error, I've succeeded getting airport express to work with netgear. But, BUT, only if I plug an ethernet cable into my laptop to my netgear router. After getting Airport Express to wirelessly connect to my router, my windows wireless connection says windows can't connect because it failed to receive a signal or response from the router. when i force connect, it's signal strength is so low it doesn't work.
so what gives? i'm seeking a solution that will allow my to go wireless again between my laptop and my netgear router.
is it perhaps something to do with wireless channels? is the airport hogging all the space?
apple should be castigated for making it so difficult to get the Airport Express to work with third-party routers. don't sell something aimed at consumers if it takes conceivably an engineer's brain and hours of fiddling to make it work.

As to your second request: I'm loath to publish my settings on this or any forum. Plus, I don't even know what you mean by "wireless pane" and "internet pane" settings. If you can explain the terms, plus convince me posting this data won't represent a security risk to me, maybe.
Finally: I don't want to set up a new wireless network, particularly because, according to Apple, with Airport Express, I don't have to. What's the point of advertising that this thing can "join an existing wireless network," particularly when it seems to have kicked off my laptop from said network? -
Why does this script not work when run with osascript cli?
I wrote the following to interface with geektool to display a list of todo's on my desktop (i'm sure it's been done elsewhere, but I wanted to try it myself). I had it working fine until I tried ordering the output to place the highest priority items at the top of the list. The following code works properly during development in Script Editor, but when geektool launches the command using osascript ~/Library/Scripts/todos.scpt it only displays the initial "TODOS:" without displaying the rest of the info. Searching the Applescript Release notes, I found that some versions of Applescript 1.8 had issues with null characters when using the osascript cli, however, I'm running 1.10.7 so it shouldn't be an issue (and I'm not sure how to check for null characters in Applescript even if it were). Anybody have any ideas on what's going on here?

I figured that problem had to be caused by the way applescript was concatenating the lists, so I got rid of the lists completely and it still wouldn't work. This convinced me that it must be newline related since that was the only special character left in the string. I opened up the script in vi, but the default compiled script format is not human readable. The osascript man page indicated that it would accept both compiled and text scripts, so I gave it a try, and osascript handled the raw text file wonderfully.

Do MacPRo mid 2010 models run with level fan noises or uneven whine?
Apple is replacing my mid-2010 mainly because of a disturbing modulating, up and down, fan noise problem. Not sure of the source. At first thought it was 5870 graphic card, but haven't been able to nail down exactly why.
They claim that these machines run with a very even level noise, and that this breathing or modulating noise is not the norm.
I have read that these machines, relative to earlier models, are quiet hummers, at least relatively.. Do most people with this year's model have machines running at a constant noise level or do the fan noises, even at idle, modulate and whine up and down, even with light usage...or on idle. I don't want a replaced machine with the same issue. I do work in a quiet environment, and don't mind the fan noise, but the modulations of up and down sound like a tunnel and I need to turn off the computer at times. Model is 3.2 ghz quad core, with ati 5870 graphic card.

So I've read a lot of forums and generally there's no simple answer anywhere. People say that their hdd/optical is making more noise than fans. That's true to my case. Hdd/optical indeed sound louder than fans. From the other hand, I work in very quiet environment (no street noise, no ventilation noises in the room or whatever) and my new Mac Pro sounds... well loud! Once again - relatively it is QUIET, I can hear older PC from the other room (and the 'other room' connects through a corridor so...). Still, a lot of people mention that they literally don't hear ANYTHING from their mac pros except for hdd/optical operation sounds. I do hear fan noise...
So i was wondering is my room too quiet/ear too sharp;) or is there some kind of a problem with the mac pro and I should bother contacting retailers?
Anybody here who can compare their mac pro's with say mac book pros? I clearly hear fans of my mac book pro (even being idle) in the main working room and mac pro is like 2-3 (may be 4) times louder than mac book pro. This might be OK for tower, but definitely it is not 'dead silent'...
So far I've even tried some iPhone decibel measurement apps (yeah it's not even close to 'pro' measurements but no other means are available to me at the moment). They doesn't notice mac book (most noise measurement devices as far as I've read don't count noises beneath 40 dB for good), but mac pro is about 42-43 dB while idle at some 10 inch from the machine and some 45-46 if I bring the mic like 3-4 inches to the case. Is it like OK or what? Unfortunately all Mac pros I've heard before where in environments where even my 42-46 dB would be completely lost, so i cannot judge if it is OK. It is still one of the quietest towers I've heard/owned but those posts about 'dead silent' and 'only hdd/optical' make me a bit uncomfortable...
Oh, and the modulation. Indeed idle operation has some modulation. As far as I can tell it comes not from varying speed of the fans but rather from how frequencies of the fans inside of the case are different and modulate when added to each other (like those FM/AM in the synthesizers). More to say, there are angles in a room where other frequencies are heard (probably reflections produce some additional modulations)... -
Why is my WiFi connection dropping as soon as I walk out of the room where my router is located? Running OSX 10.6.8
Had ISP provider here multiple times. They switched out the router/modem on 4 occasions. They ran new fiber optic cables to my house. They sent a PC tech here with a Mac, and he was able to get a strong wireless connection, but mine, he said, was "weak."
I called Apple support. They had me remove the battery and clear the PRAM. It didn't help.
There's no point in having a wireless connection if I cannot walk 20 feet away from the router without losing the connection.
Do I need a new Airport Extreme card?
How much would it cost to get one, and what is the process of getting it installed? (no longer under warranty)

Which Cisco router for NTP service

I'm looking for deploying NTP service for multi-customer (in Datacenter).
So, I take a look at Cisco routers list and I saw that some router doesn't have hardware-clock / internal-clock ; for example 2600 series.
I'm looking for a "cheap" but good solution to provide NTP :
- "Cheap" : that's why I take a look at routers, and not directly NTP appliance.
- "Good" : something that can provide time to 300+ end-devices.
Cisco 800 series got hardware-clock, if I read good. But this is the cheapest router, so I don't feel confident.

Depends on the router, you can instruct the router to regularly update the hardware clock using the command "ntp update-calendar".
If you really insist on a router, an 800 router, then you can get all your device to sync to your router and your router gets sync somewhere in the internet.
Make sure you have the following commands:
ntp server <NTP server>
ntp update-calendar
Note: You can have multiple NTP server IP addresses. And the command above are hyperlinks.
Warning: DO NOT be tempted to use the command "ntp master". -

Why is TC router sometimes slow?
I have a Macbook Pro 2010 that connects to a Time Capsule wirelessly. Sometimes I get 10mb download but sometimes only 5mb. I have a Vista desktop that connects via wire to the TC. It always gets 10mb download even when the MBP is slower. I'm guessing this is more an issue with the TC and not the ISP. What would cause such large fluctuations in speed or how can I troubleshoot it?
There are so many different and related things that affect wireless connection speed that is difficult to name specifics without actually being at your location.
First, you cannot really compare a direct ethernet connection to a wireless connection. Ethernet will always be faster and more stable. It does make some sense to compare one ethernet connection to another on a network if you are testing things to make sure all the cables are working correctly.
Wireless connection speed is affected primarily by the following things:
o Distance of the computer to the router. Speed falls off with distance.
o Any obstructions in the signal path (a normal wall in a home will absorb 20-25% of the signal. A ceiling, which is thicker, will absorb more.) Lower signal strength = lower connection speeds
o Other electronics that may be nearby, cordless phones, other wireless networks in the neighborhood, wireless security systems in the neighborhood, microwave transmissions, the list is almost endless of possible causes.
If I power up an old cordless phone and base station that I no longer use, and move it anywhere within 20-25 feet of my router or computer, the wireless speeds drop immediately and fluctuate up and down. Sometimes, the internet connection is lost if the cordless phone is closer to the router.
That is why I no longer use cordless phones in the house. I'm not saying this is your issue, but it's a fact that cordless phones cause all kinds of problems for wireless networks. And it can be the neighbor's phone causing the problems as well. -

We recently (yesterday) upgraded our Adobe apps to CC versions. InDesign, Photoshop and Bridge all run perfectly. Illustrator crashes at startup. Tried launching it from Administrator account and it crashes. I have disabled fonts except the bare minimum, no success. If it would launch, then I might be able to narrow it down to an incompatible print driver, but it has to actually be running first. We use no third party plugins with it, so I doubt that is the issue.
