Why is my SATA Raptor listed in my system tray?

Can anyone explain to me why my SATA Raptor is listed in my system tray along with my external Maxtor OneTouch USB HDD? It's a little icon that says "safely remove hardware" if I hold my cursor over it. If I click on it it lists my SATA Raptor and my OneTouch. I know why my OneTouch is there but why is my primary HDD there? Is this normal? Did I not install something I should have or maybe installed the Raptor wrong? It's my only HDD and I have it plugged into SATA 1.
Thanks,

Could also be that SATA HD's are hot-swappable.
Steve
From WD:
I want to be able to connect or remove a drive without turning off the system. Is it safe to hot-plug WD serial ATA drives?
Serial ATA supports hot-plugging (also known as "hot-swapping"). This is the ability to swap out a failed hard drive without having to power down the system or reboot. This capability contributes to both data availability and serviceability without any associated downtime.
The Serial ATA 1.0 specification requires staggered pins for both the hard drive and drive receptacles. Staggered pins mate the power signals in the appropriate sequences required for powering up the hot-plugged device. These pins are also specified to handle in excess of the maximum allowed inrush current that occurs during drive insertion. SATA-compliant devices thus need no further modification to be hot-pluggable and provide the necessary building blocks for a robust hot-plug solution, which typically includes:
Device detection even with power downed receptacles (typical of server applications)
Pre-charging resistors to passively limit inrush current during drive insertion
Hot-plug controllers to actively limit inrush current during drive insertion

  • Why is iCloud is not listed in my System Preferences?

Apple instructions for setting up iCloud direct me to access it in my Systems Preferences under Internet and Wireless, but it isn't listed there.

Because your OSX version is 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and iCloud needs at least 10.7.5 Lion (or later of course).

  • 1 SATA Raptor 74GB or 2 7200rpm SATA drives in RAID0?

    Hey guys,
Knowing that my machine is mostly used for software development, watching movies/listening music, and gaming, what do you think is a better choice: A single SATA WD Raptor 74GB as my system drive or 2 Seagate 120GB 7200RPM drives setup in RAID 0 (as my system drive as well)?  I am trying to compare it to 2 120GB drives because it would cost around $180, which is roughly the same as the Raptor.  A lot of people buy Raptor for the performance, but why not buy two 7200rpm drives and set them up as RAID 0?  You'd get 240GBs versus a measly 74GBs...
I have read articles/thread that compare single-drives vs RAID 1 vs RAID 0, but I'm more interested in the question posted above.  I have read the thread "Is RAID-0 Worth the Risk of Array Failure?" (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=53911.0) and the Anandtech article on RAID 0.  The Anandtech article received a lot of criticism, so I figured I'd ask here. :-)
    Fire away...

I don't know how you got those exact numbers.  I just copied the file across using explorer and measured the time more or less with the clock.  It took about 11 seconds from when I hit Ctrl-V.  That was on a 701.42 mb file.  I think it would be better to do a test copying from RAM to the Raptors.  Then we could eliminate read speed as the issue and only have write speed be a factor.  But then again, this is the type of test where my system would have the biggest advantage, and if I'm getting 11 seconds to transfer and you're getting 12.6 seconds, that's not much of a difference.  To be perfectly honest, if I had to do it over again, I'm not sure if I would.  But at the time when I got the Raptors, the 74 GB drive had just come out and was significantly more expensive than TWO 36 gig Raptors, so I just went with the 2 drives since I figured it would be equal in most tests and better in a few.
These are my HDTach results if you're at all interested:
    RAID 0 2x36GB Raptors - access time 8.6ms, burst 121.2mb/s, max 88.7mb/s, min 34.8mb/s, avg 64.6mb/s, cpu 19.9%
    Maxtor DM10 250GB 16mb cache - access time 13.0ms, burst ??, max 69.8mb/s, min 37.6mb/s, avg 57.6mb/s, cpu 5.2%
    WD 80GB 8mb cache - access time 13.2ms, burst ??,  max 40.7mb/s, min 28.6mb/s, avg 35.1mb/s, cpu 8.6%
So if you look at the read speed average of the Maxtor (57.6mb/s), then take 700mb and divide by 57.6, you get 12.15 seconds.  Which explains why we'd be getting nearly identical results.  I'm just surprised your single Raptor is able to write at that same speed and keep up with it.  It's a shame I don't have the full version of HD Tach.  I can't test write speeds with this version.  Because even though you have double the capacity with a single drive, the 74 GB Raptor still uses 36 GB platters, it just has two of them, so I don't think that would improve your speed very much over a single 36 GB drive.
RAID 0 has few uses, but I'm really happy with these drives.  I've never tried a single 74 GB Raptor, so I can't compare to that, all I know is that this array is way faster at everything then when I had Windows installed on my Maxtor DM10, which is the fastest 7200rpm drive available.  You really can't go wrong with either a 74 GB Raptor or 2 36 GB Raptors, they're both light years ahead of all 7200 rpm drives when it comes to responsiveness and general speed.

  • Why are the iPhotos not listed in the finder?

why are the iPhotos not listed in the finder?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • HT2822 Why doesn't a network list appear anymore yet Apple TV says I'm connected to the internet?

Since updating Apple TV I lost the usual main menu. Now I can't even see Network lists like I did before the update. The main menu show options for Computer Sharing and Settings. Apple informs me that I am connected to the Internet through built in ethernet so why doesn't a network list appear?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Are you actually connected using ethernet, if you are then you won't see a list of networks.
You clearly do have a problem, however before addressing that problem it would help if we could sort out whether you have an ethernet connection or not.

Just upgraded to snow leopard, downloader apple support drivers for canon mp620.  Why won't a printer list display in add printer window?

Assuming the MP620 is connected to your wireless network, then there are two components to this device - the printer and the scanner. The printer uses Canon proprietary software while the scanner is supported by Apple's Bonjour service. So in many cases, you will at least see the scanner, shown as Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column, while the printer can take longer to appear and is shown as canonijnetwork in the Kind column. If you cannot see either then you have a network issue. Try turning off the MP620 for a minute and then turning back on. Then see if the scanner / printer component appears in the Add Printer window. If you still don't see either, then confirm the MP and the Mac are using the same network. If you know the MP's IP address you can use Network Utility to Ping the address. You can also enable Bonjour Bookmarks in Safari preferences and when selected, the MP620 should appear.

  • HT1665 Why are my contacts not listed ?  They used to be there.

Why are my contacts not listed?  They used to be there.

I had the same thing happen to me.  It's a bug in iPhoto 9.4.2.
The first time you run iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.2, it "updates the iPhoto library".  This sometimes tickles a bug where iTunes can see all your iPhoto albums, but iTunes thinks they are empty.  Since iTunes thinks all your albums are empty, it dutifully deletes any photos from your synced iOS devices.
It's easy to tell if this is the problem you are seeing.  Open iTunes and go to the photos sync panel for one of your iOS devices.  If you have multiple albums checked, but iTunes shows a total of 0 photos, then you have the problem.
I spent an hour with an Apple Genius.  he couldn't find any mention of this problem in their internal support system.  His recomendation was to reinstall the operating the system.  I suspect that this won't solve it.
The only solution I have found is to restore iPhoto 9.4.1 and the corresponding iPhoto library from your backups.
I would refrain from upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.2 until Apple has a fix for this issue.

  • Why does MAX say %22The remote access list on this system is blank%22%3F

I am building and deploying a real-time data acquisition/control system using LabVIEW RT (2012 SP1) and a PXI controller.  I've tested my software, and it runs fine, now that I've figured out how to build stand-alone executables for both the Host and RT Target systems.
Due to a bug on the RT side (which I hope I've now fixed), I needed to "rebuild" my PXI Controller, reinstall LabVIEW RT and related software, and reconfigure all of the Tasks in MAX (version 5.5).  To save the Configuration (and simplify reconfiguring the Tasks and Channels), I tried to export the configuration using the Configuration Export Wizard in MAX.  However, there were some (minor?) inconsistencies in some of the devices (such as NI-488.2) between the Host and Remote systems that generated some errors.  I was able to correct this by asking MAX to do a Reset Configuration Data on the Host, and those problems went away.
After exporting the NI Configuration Export File for my PXI, I decided to use MAX to Create Reports on both my Host and Remote PXI systems.  While reviewing the PXI's report, I noticed that the last entry in the report, called "Security", reads as follows:
"The remote access list on this system is blank. This means that no remote system has access to this system."
What does this mean?  Where is the "remote access list on this system", and how is it maintained?  Note that I haven't (yet) tried deploying my (formerly-working) Project to this (rebuilt) Controller, but I haven't made changes in LabVIEW, itself.
If I look at the Properties of the RT Target in Project, the VI Server properties (still) show TCP/IP enabled (port 3363) with Machine Access given to "*" (all machines) and, similarly, all Exported VIs allowed access.
Am I missing something?  Can I safely ignore the above Security report entry generated by MAX, or is there a hidden setting I need to find and change?

I agree, but I've never heard about "Security Settings" in MAX. When I first read your note, I went looking and couldn't find "Logging into your System".  I came back a day later, was going to write a "There is not such topic!" reply, but fortunately I looked again, and found it.  I suspect the reason I never ran into this was that my controllers were all using older BIOSes -- I'd just "rebuilt" this controller, including updating its BIOS, and ran into the Login prompt for the first time ...
Thanks for pointing me in (what turns out to be) the right direction!

    Hi Aditya,
you can access a version of the Enterprise Services Workplace with the following URL on your Discovery System: http://iwdfvm2160.wdf.sap.corp:51080/socoview
Please keep in mind that this refers to the services on the DS only. The Enterprise Services Workplace on SDN (https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/explore-es and http://erp.esworkplace.sap.com/socoview(bD1kZSZjPTgwMCZkPW1pbg==)/flddisplay.asp) provides an extended set of services in the meanwhile. You potentially will find your specific services in that list.

  • Your Raptor 150 GB experiences & system config

I'm starting a new thread for this, as the old thread is a ***** to read (acceptable only with 1920x1200 res + a small font).
Anyway, as I reported at xlr8yourmac (on front page right now, later to be found in drive compatiblity database (search for WD1500 model) my new Raptor works fine in my Quad G5.
At this point I think it's pretty established that PCI/PCI-X G5s won't reliably work with a Raptor 150, but some but not all PCIe/dual-core G5 do.
It looks like some newer revision Quad G5s (and possibly other single dual-core/PCIe G5) might be fine - plus it might also depend on the specific Raptor revision.
I don't feel like posting everything again, so for basics/my history you might want to read this thread. (Most importantly: I've had problems myself in my earlier G5, but not the Quad)
Anyway, here's the new stuff: If you have experiences with a Raptor 150 GB on the onboard SATA controller in your G5, please post your info as follows, as this might at some point help potential Raptor buyers... Thanks.
    --- My Raptor 150 GB experiences ---
Raptor seems to work fine (1400 GB transfer test).
I got my Quad on December 23rd, 2005 IIRC.
    Boot ROM Version is 5.2.7f1.
According to the serial number decoder it was manufactured in:
    Production year: 2005
    Production week: 50 (December)
Production number: 145 (within this week)
Raptor info from Apple System Profiler:
    Capacity: 139.74 GB
    Model: WDC WD1500ADFD-00NLR1
    Revision: 20.07P20
According to its label, it was manufactured in April 2006.

I forgot to mention where my Quad was manufactured, that might have an influence as well:
    Factory: CK (Cork, Ireland)
