Why is my wifi symbol greyed out?

Hi,
As the title suggests - my wifi symbol is greyed out (as it used to look when no wifi was available). However - my wifi is working well (I'm on it now!).
I've done a bit of searching, and the closest problem I can see to this is when people have an exclamation mark on their wifi symbol. However - this isn't the problem I'm having.
Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks.

When I click on the symbol, all available networks are displayed. I can click on another network and connect that that fine too. Often, when I swap around wifi networks, the symbol becomes 'blacked out', as I'd expect, rather than greyed out.
When I click on System Preferences - Network, I see a green light with connected underneath.
Typically - yes, the symbol is greyed ouf from when I start the computer.
I hope this helps.

  • Macbook pro wifi symbol greyed out and will not recognize networks

My Macbook Pro has had an issue since this past fall of having its wifi symbol greyed out with an "X". It also does not recognize wifi networks as in simply no networks show up. Talked to Apple last week and they said to upgrade to Yosemite, but I am still having this issue. Help?

Have you used DVDs that have different region codes?  It may be that your DVD drive is locked for a region code different from what Netflix is programmed for.

  • Why is my WIFI option greyed out!? 4S

Last week I had my iPhone 4S replaced because my wifi option greyed out and the battery life started to drain really fast. 8 days later it's the exact same problem. What's happening here? I bought the phone 11 months ago!!! Up to date software, reset network settings. I have spoke with several other people with the same problem. I expected more from an expensive apple product...
    Please help me Apple! Thanks

Your replacement should have a minimum of a 90 day warranty, if replaced by Apple.
If you've followed all of the steps in the troubleshooting article, and your replacement device is still having wi-fi greyed out, then get the device replaced.

  • Why is my Wifi access greyed out?

I have been trying to help mom with her WiFi access on her Iphone 4s.  It used to work fine.  Now all of a sudden the Wifi access is greyed out so she cannot get Wifi.  This is a huge problem because we FaceTime to see each other and now we can't.
She took it into the Apple store and was told she would need to pay $200 to have it replaced because they can't repair it; I've been on line and noticed there were thousands of complaints about this issue so I'm wondering why it can't be fixed.  Is it a problem with the hardware and if so why won't Apple fix it?
Has anyone else experienced this issue and were you able to resolve it?
    Thanks

    Additional Information
If you are still unable to turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options.
If no change after following the troubleshooting steps included with the link provided including restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem. Apparently this has been confirmed at the Apple Store and if the iPhone remained under warranty it would have been exchanged under warranty at no charge.

  • Pearl 9105 - WIFI Symbol greyed out

    Hello forums,
I have an issue with my Pearl. The WiFi symbol has stayed greyed out even though it says it has connected to my WiFi, home network. It is similar to what happened during the outage that happened.
I have reinstalled the software (OS 5) O2 won't allow upgrade to OS6. I have deleted the WiFi connection and re installed, but still it won't go white and it is affecting my mobile data usage as my phone is using the network signal for internet rather than WiFi.
Any suggestions on how to solve?
    Cheers
    Martyn

Unfortunately the KB was very useful as I already knew that exsisted. Though it does tell me that my phone has not connected up to the Blackberry Infrastructure but don't know how to get the phone to reconnect?
Wait...so in Manage Connections > Services Status, the status of BIS is "Not Connected"? If so, then you have bigger issues...in which case I suggest (with your BB truly functioning on your carrier network...turn the WiFi radio off to be sure) the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app
    2) Delete and Resend Service Books
KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
If you have no CMIME entry, then skip the deletion
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
See if that get's the BIS Services Status to at least say "Mobile Network". If it does, then try WiFi again (a Service Book may have been missing, and the resend may have obtained it). Otherwise, if you can't register and/or can't receive Service Books, then contact O2 for formal support as your BB is not properly connecting to them.

I have downloaded a version of OS6 but am concerned about branding will downloading it from another carrier cause any issues?
The ONLY thing that happens is if, at some point when you seek formal support from O2, they discover that you are using an OS level that they do not sanction, then they can refuse to provide support to you until you fall back to their supported version. But thousands of folks (maybe millions???) are using OS packages from other carriers all the time with no ill effects whatsoever.
There is a "trick" necessary to use another carriers OS package...let us know if you desire to proceed down that path and we can provide what you need.
    Good luck!

  • Why is my wifi slider greyed out on the iPhone 4s?

It's been messing up for 3 weeks now, and I'm getting real ******. I cannot adjust my wifi settings to on. It's stuck on the off (greyed out) position.

if not, it is a hardware failure. Contact Genius bar for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • IPhone 5 wifi symbol greyed out/wifi will not stay connect?

I had an iphone 5 that was having some battery issues, so I took it in and they replaced it with a new 5 (16 gig). I restored my backup, and when the restore was done, I couldn't turn on the wifi. The pull up setting was blacked out and in settings I couldn't move the switch to 'on'. I rebooted the phone, and that fixed the problem for a little bit. Eventually my wifi connection would either disconnect and quickly reconnect or just turn off all together. This can't be a wifi issue, since my ipad and my families apple devices are working fine. I've tried deleting my phone and using it as a new one, reseting the network settings (multiple times) and almost everything I can think of. This has been going on for a few weeks, and every time the wifi cuts out I have to either reboot the phone multiple times, or, if I get lucky, just turn it off and then on again. Its getting annoying and I don't know how to fix it without switching to a new, non apple device, which I really don't want to do. Any advice?  (i have the newest software btw, updating changed nothing)

    Hello emconway,
Check against the article below with the troubleshooting that you have done. You also said that you had your iPhone replaced and it still has at least a 90 day warranty on it if it was serviced by Apple, so you may need to take it back to have it looked it.

  • Why Apple is silent about 4s wifi getting greyed out and not responding to this issue? many ppl suffer from this and this is absurd!

Why Apple is silent about iPhone 4s wifi getting greyed out with iOS updates 8.0.2 and 8.1 and did not respond to this issue officially? Many people are suffering from this affected service. How can you trust us to buy new iPhones when you stop supporting us with the ones we have since they are still upgradable to the latest iOS.
Is there any chance that we will be given the support and would this issue be fixed with any upcoming updates? My iPhone when its battery is drained totally and I start it again the WIFI works until I try to choose another network or somehow I disable it then blackout!
This is definitely a software issue that we never had problems before this update.
Show us that you care for your products at least and provide us with a solution please.

That doesn't help at all.. I can only have it enabled if the battery gets drained out totally then when I restart it the WIF is on. then back greyed out.. that is not a serious reply, really!
Yes, it's a serious reply. Did you actually read the information at the link I posted? Especially the last sentence? The fact that it appeared when you updated to iOS 8 has no bearing on the validity of the article. It is not specific to any version.

  • WiFi Was Greyed out

My iPhone's WiFi was working great on iOS 6.0.1 till 13th Feb'13 no problems whatsoever, until yesterday it failed over night without me knowing. The WiFi option was still available but unable to connect to my home network and when I rebooted the phone, the WiFI was greyed out. It has not been working since.
Somehow i manageed to install 6.1.1 and i thought it may fix the problem but same problem...the WiFI is still greyed out. I do not understand why it has failed. I bought this 4S in July and have never dropped it .The WiFi was working great till yesterday and suddently this happened. I won't understand what kind of application/phone Apps have released. Its seem they are just want to stay in the market instead giving a good service to their customer.
I have reseted the network settings, restored the phone and even tried using the phone as new and this has still not fixed the problem.
Never expect such kind of phone from a company like Apple.

It takes two to Tango. But it was technically a Software Error in the boot sequence, but the Hardware is actively reading the boot information and has to respond accordingly. Sounds like it was a one time glitch. Keep an eye on it. You iPhone still has full Warranty.

  • My iPad 2 3g wifi is greyed out. Bluetooth connection and celluar work great. wifi address N/A...

Wow... I've researched so much about this topic.
The story is, the ipad was on top on a car and it fell off while driving down the road.  The driver realized what happened, but it was to late.  Several 18 wheelers were behind him and it was TOAST!   Luckily he turned it on and it worked!   So, he asks me to fix it.
I replace the shattered screen and everything was great!  Except the wifi was greyed out... I did almost everything from hard reset, to updates, to reformat it etc.
No luck...   then I bought 2 new wifi replacements and no luck... except when I installed the first wifi replacement, it worked!  I connected it to my wireless at home and left for a little bit then came back and it wasn't working!  I've tried everything... reconnected it to the chip onboard...
So, I decided to take it apart again and install the 2nd wifi antenna i bought, still no luck.
Not sure... maybe the wireless chip it connects to is bad.
Just wondering why the bluetooth is working and the wireless isn't...
    Thanks for any help!!!

LISTEN EVERYONE WHO HAS PROBLEMS WITH WIFI WHEN UPDATING iOS6
If your wifi is greyed out:
you need to go to the apple store. You're wifi chip has expired! Wifi chip experation dates were checked upon the new software, that is why some  iPhones still work and others don't. They will replace it for you free of charge (don't quote me on this). It was free for me.
I myself have an iPhone4S and they told me exactly this.
