Why is Nokia 301 so dumb?!?!

Sorry for the somewhat indescriptive thread title, but with the problems being so far-ranging, it is hard to summarize them, or even remember 'em all.
I just upgraded from a C2.1 to the 301. All I want is a sleek, fast, candybar that stays awake for weeks without charging. And works quickly and smoothly.
Why are a bunch of the smart user-friendly stuff in the C2.1 GONE from the newer, better, faster phone?
1. The dictionary is seemingly not learning from usage and not putting the more frequently-used T9 word solutions up front. For example, 111 means '...' for all of my use, not ':-)'. Why won't the phone learn that?
2. Why can't I turn off 'graphical smileys'? I don't want them, I don't like them, and the option is not there. It was in the C2.1, but I guess people don't care anymore (so thinks Nokia).
3. In the calendar - did you especially TRY to make the bold (stuff that day) and not-bold (empty day) numbers look the same? It'd be hard to make 'em even closer-to-each-other in look/size.
4. Don't notify me that you've sent my text message. I sent it and saw you do it. Don't need the 'Message has been sent' note. C2 has a way to turn that off. 301 - nope, too many options for you, peasant.
5. 'Contacts window' - why is the box that pops up when I start typing a name in so f*cking huge? Compare to the C2.
6. In 'Messaging' - why is 'inbox' even an option - when the 'inbox view/conversation view' was an option on a phone from 3 years ago!!!
What the hell, Nokia? You're on your last straw here. Mainly it's the dictionary problem. I can't use this phone if it don't start learning how I talk.
Tanks!
-tffy
P.S. And finally - what the hell is wrong with you, Nokia, that you won't put WiFi onto a simple easy-to-use and carry candybar? I'll pay more money - just make a nice simple phone with a lot of power and configuration-rich options that's targeted to a minimalist (mind you, not same as third-world-country poor) segment of the market!
P.P.S. The fact that I can use the phone without looking at what I'm pressing is one of the reasons to get a simple candybar. The buttons I can feel are key. Why do you keep making (C1-01, N208) sleek looking phones that waste the big advantage they could have? Man, I should come do product design for you guys, no, really. Ughhhhh.

Oh, for sure I agree noone is pushing me, but the problem is... there's not a new-technology minimalist phone out there, as far as I know.
I want a C2-01.5 like I have now, but with a faster processor and more memory. Same size, a bigger (less edge margin) screen'd be nice, but whatever. A bigger battery and perhaps an even skinnier/smaller form factor. I want the OS to be super configurable and have options on top of options on top of options (and if it let me disable/hide the things I don't use - to reduce the clutter of the menus, I'd be in frickin' heaven!). Finally, I want them to put WiFi into this simple small stick. And the simplicity of the basic Nokia keyboard layout (with slightly raised keys {great job on the C2-01.5} that I can feel with my fingers) would be awesome too. If anyone can think of something like this described dream-phone, please do let me know. I'll build you a small temple and pray at it weekly. As far as it goes with this experiment, I'm sending the N301 back. And I had such high hopes!
Funny and sad at the same time.
Thanks, guys!

P.S. Nokia, if you wanted to hire me for product design, I'm all ears.  Finland's a nice country. Lotsa salmon and saunas and pretty blonde girls.

  • Nokia 301 Feature Request: Missed calls/messages n...

    Hi,
I just bought a Nokia 301 dual sim phone. I'm satisfied with it except one thing - IT DOESN"T HAVE MISSED CALLS/MESSAGES NOTIFICATION. How come such important and basic function not implemented? No one will check his phone regularly and there is no way to know wether I have missed calls or messages. It should keep making a beep until I read it. I believe this function could be implemented easily in software, even by polling the status at a constant interval or setting up a counter which issues interrupts. Any Nokia staff can answer this questtion?
    Thanks.
    Leonard

This is a feature which the majority of phone users do not want, and that's why Nokia phones have not done it since the early 2000s when Nokia phones used to beep the morse code for SMS.
There are two primary reasons why a person might not read a message at the time it comes in:
He didn't hear it, maybe he was in a noisy place and didn't hear or maybe the phone is in a different room.
He heard it but was prevented from reacting by other circumstances.
If you are away from your phone, there are visual cues when you get back to it that a message has come in. If you are walking down a busy street with your phone in your pocket, there is also in the vast majority of phones a vibrate option to give an alternative kind of notification. If you are driving a car responsibly on a journey of some length, it would becoming annoying after a while if your phone was beeping in your briefcase in the back of the car, or if you leave your phone on your desk at the office whilst you are elsewhere, the repeated beeping could be just as annoying to other people.

  • Nokia 301: Supports amounts of contacts

    Hi All,
I just bought a Nokia 301 last weekend but I was really dispointed that the phone can't reach it's specification regarding "supports amounts of contact". I tried to transfer my contacts from old phone (E52) to new phone (301) but the transfer stocked at No. 1000 contacts. I tried to call Nokia Taiwan because the max amount of contact should be 2000. Nokia Taiwan explained that "2000" is caculated by the amounts of "phone number" instead of contacts. It is really strange that why it shows memory space of contacts is 100% used when there are 1000 contacts. Why not "999" or "1001" if it is caculated by amounts of phone number.

Sounds like a mistake on Nokia's part while publishing the specs. Else your question isn't practical. If 1000 contacts say it as 100%, its not possible that each one of them contains 2 numbers
Do you have some phone memory free? Just asking in case the contacts are saved on the main phone memory.

  • Nokia 301 Media player

    Hy guys,
i have a big problem..for me.. in my job, i have to answer the phone and take the order. For this, i need to record the call, and later i have to give the order to the other colleagues. On my previous phones, x2-00, 6300, in the middle of the call can play the recorded files. On my new Nokia 301 its imposible. Error "Not alowed".
Its very important to me this .
    Why ?
If this is the media player built, i don't understand their logic. If i recorded a call its have to be able to play.

plepleple, thanks for the hint! Yes, it works here in my Nokia 206 Single-SIM and my Nokia 210 Dual-SIM as well.
Consequently, this feature broke either with HD-Voice (AMR-WB) or with 3G (UMTS). Has anyone tried with a Nokia 208, because that has 3G like the Nokia 301 and Nokia 515. If it works ina Nokia 208, the cause might be AMR-WB.

  • Why dont nokia help more with language settings? (...

this is for all nokia phones but the one i have is the n97 and depending on where you buy the phone it has different languages in the settings. and for a lot of people who decide to buy theirs from ebay or from another country and have to suffer without their language.. in my case i wanted greek in the phone, and as i got mine from a english guy the uk n97 had various languages such as russian and french which to me is no good. i really need GREEK..
so i came to ask is there a way to add languaqges and i am told no? but there is a way! why does nokia lie and make me take it to a nokia store to pay to add it? why cant nokia either add all the same languages in the phone no matter where you get it like apple do..or give you the option as to which languages you want to install?
i found it very annoying that nokia just dont allow you to add languages on your own even though there is a way to add the language which i wont mention how my post will probably be deleted if i do.. but there is a way why do nokia lie and keep it such a secret like its a bad thing that i want greek on my phone? but when you change languages the keyboard keys mess up and change postitioning which can be very annoying also which is why i dont use this option.. and i dont want to go pay more to add a language.

    thanks for your reply..
i do understand that why would a guy in china need arabic or some other language that he/she does not speak
apple iphone they have the same set of languages in the phone no matter where you buy it..
maybe you buy the phone from ebay? and you buy it from another country that does not have your language in the settings? or like me i was using a cyprus forum where a guy from england was offering it for 450 euros.. when in cyprus its sold for 800 euros.. so i went for it but the language i wanted wasent there.
there should be an option to install more languages if you want/need.. im sure i am not the only one that has this problem with languages from a nokia that was bought from another country for whatever reasons.
i can change my phones code to one from greece and get greek but my keyboards settings mess up and the keys move.surely nokia could easily add an option to download language packs if i wanted? its not like its not possible or doing anything wrong
and now that i look in my phones settings it has russian dutch french... i could ask the same question,, why would i need them languages for a phone intended for UK when the language of england is english?

  • Nokia 301 icon issues following latest update

I have got a Nokia 301 which usually works fine.
I`ve just updated the phones software to the latest version. My problem is: -
When I click on the Mail icon, nothing happens. So I can`t see my email account I added.
Is there a way of sorting this out?
    Many thanks.
    Ned1

I have previously deleted the email account and then added it back in.
The problem this time is when i click on the Mail Icon, it doesn't open up.
I don't really want to do a factory reset. If i have to i will.
I just wandered if there was a way of bypassing the Mail Icon to access my email account, or deleting the icon and reinstalling it.

  • Nokia 301 app store problems

I have a problem with the Nokia Store app in my Nokia 301 (single SIM) RM-841 v.8.02 S40 phone. It's an unlocked phone.
I opened the store app and it said there was a required update. I said yes and it updated. However, after that, the Nokia Store app doesn't work properly and hangs, and it also displays the icon with a key over it. The Nokia internet doesn't work properly either after the store app update.
I tried to use the recovery tool wich I downloaded from Microsoft. I installed it, connected the phone with the appropiate USB cable, followed the instructions. The recovery tool detected my phone but after that, it just doesn't seem to work and it says installation failed and gets stuck at 10%.
What can I do to solve and/or fix the issue to be able to use the Nokia Store app again and the Nokia internet browser.
    I have Windows 7 of 64bit.
    Can anyone help me?

On the first (differ), you have to say YES, or the download does not work.
On the second (keep), depends on the app. However, I go for NO usually.
The built-in apps do not have the download URL embedded, when you first update. Furthermore, even the next updates are going to show that warning because the webserver scripts redirect while updating. Therefore, this message. Botching. This is actually a software-bug in the app and webserver scripts. With one experienced computer scientist, this would not have happened.
If you do not keep the data, you start all over – except for apps which store your data online, like the Nokia Store. If you start over, you make sure, you do not have RMS with unexpected settings. This is important, if you used an already updated app, which FOTA downgrades. Because you do not know, if FOTA downgraded an app, NO is the safe way. We saw that with Nokia Xpress on some models. Anyway, again, a software-bug because apps can be designed to handle unknown/future settings easily. Botching.

Hi, arabianights. As I've checked, your phone does not support this feature. See this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en/mobile/phone/301-dual-sim/specifications/. You may check the user guide for more information about personalizing your phone. Note that the link is intended for a specific country, but you may go here to visit your local support page. Here is the thing the actual license for Apple to have a native YouTube app has expired you must understand this more about Apple removing Google from its ecosystem and less about actual licenses.  If Apple was so inclined I am almost certain they could have continued to provide a native YouTube app.
Do you really think that Apple Maps are "better" for iOS users?  You know that you can set your default search to another provider such as Bing?  Imagine Apple changing its default Safari search to Bing.  You must understand that Google makes more from searches on iOS devices than it does on everyting that is Andriod (source:http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/google-earns-four-times-more-from-ios-than-a ndroid/).  Apple is slowly and meticulously working on freeing iOS of Google products.
Of course it is a free market and Apple will most certainly allow Google's apps on their app store. There is an iPhone optimized version of YouTube in the app store.

  • Nokia 301 MMS retrieval error

I'm having trouble receiving MMS messages on my Nokia 301; it seems that when people try to send pictures, the error message comes back "message too large." I assume that thiscould be corrected by "auto-adjusting" the pics as they come in, but I'm having trouble finding the option for it in the phone (does it exist?).  Searching online has implied it would be a service issue with ATT's limits, but I can receive pictures of the same size just fine on other phones, so there must be a setting on the 301 I have to change.  Please help!

The senders are using smartphones, particularly the iPhone 5 and the Nexus 5.  I understand that the phone itself may ot be physically capable of handling the large file size, but I know other basic phones are capable of "resizing" the image to allow the less capable device of handling the picture.  I was curious if the 301 has this capability somewhere, as I'm been unable to find it.

  • Nokia 301 - worked 5 minutes

    Hey guys,
I just bought a Nokia 301, after starting it up for the first time and knowing with all the bugs that are on the forum, I decided to updatet it to latest firmware. It downloaded the update, went onto installing it, and after it I got a white screen and after that the phone went dead. I left around 30 minutes, thinking it was working on the background, took the battery out, put it back again, plugged it in the charger but still nothing.
Holding the power button sometimes it vibrates, but in other cases it's just a black screen in a black plastic case... I contacteted the service and they promissed an exchange phone in 2 weeks...
I am just wondering if there is any chance to turn the phone on, or I have to wait for the replacement phone? I didn't even made a call with it, like I said it worked for 5 minutes.
This is far the worst ever experience I ever had with a phone, so far the record was with a Motorola that lasted 4 hours.

    csimby:
yep, unfortunately the only option would be to take the phone to the a Nokia Care service point (or the shop where you bought it) and get it either reflashed or replaced.
could you send me the phone IMEI number via private message? That would help us to investigate whether there is something wrong with the update package you downloaded.

  • Why does NOKIA offers so unfinished product?

MY phone originally had a lot of nice ringtones, had no problems with anything i used, had an option of silent camera shutter and many more. Why did Nokia offered me something as bad as Belle?
Yes, it has some interesting features but has nothing I really need! I don't need that huge menu list with a lot of things I don't use and don't know how to uninstall if it's possible. I don't really need those six homescreens and icons I'm able to move! I wanted to TRY this softwared but didn't want no way back!
When, yes, WHEN will be the downgrading to original software available?
Why is Nokia so interested in inventing this belle thing..

There is a camera shutter sound "off" option on my N8 Belle - but I need to scroll the list of sounds to make it visible.
For the rest of your comments I can assure you it feels just as awkward going from Belle to Anna, and it is way better for my blood pressure to commit myself to Belle, learning the changes and working around the troubles with the help of this forum while waiting for the fixes that will come - i.e. the small Qt stability update apparently sorted out the trouble with Sleeping Screen and so I can again impress the Android and iPhone users at the pub.
