Why is non-embedded artwork taking up 500% more space on iPod Classic

Hi all
Following on from this thread:
How to tell if my mp3s have embedded artwork (artwork file bigger than it should be)?
If anyone has a moment (anyone who does not embed artwork that is), would you mind comparing your PC Hard Drive and iPod in terms of how much space they use for the same amount of artwork?
I am using Foobar iPod Manager to transfer. I have one cover.jpg file per album, and even though I have the exact same artwork on my PC Hard Drive and iPod, the iPod uses 145MB more storage space (about 500% I think!). I've no idea if this is just how the iPod stores artwork, or if there is another reason. I'd be curious to see how yours looks and/or to hear why this happens.
Cheers
Max

Well, an update has come from another forum and I thought I would post it here in case others stumble here in the future searching for an answer to the same question.
Apparently,  the non-embedded artwork on the iPod is in an uncompressed format instead of JPG and therefore takes up more space.  Seems a bit odd, seeing as I am loading jpegs onto the iPod.  I can only presume the iPod decompresses them at some stage.
Cheers

  • Why do songs from cds take up way more space on ipod?

Everytime I try to upload a cd to my ipod it takes up way more space.  Can only fit a few cds on the shuffle.  Why?

  • How to preserve embedded artwork when converting to AAC 128kbps for iPod?

    Hi
I am using the new 'convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps ACC' option in iTunes 9.1.1 (12). All of my artwork is embedded in Apple Lossless files, but on conversion to AAC for the iPod this embedded artwork gets stripped out of the file. Instead I am getting about 12 ithmb files in the iPod_Control/Artwork/ folder totalling about 6GB which probably corresponds to all the embedded artwork for all the tracks, i.e. 20000 tracks x 300KB = 6GB, and an ArtworkDB file, which presumably is for CoverFlow.
Because I use PodWorks to backup my iPod Music to my Mac I would like all of the artwork to stay embedded in the AAC files, so that it gets uploaded to the Mac. Artwork stays embedded when you make an AAC version of an Apple Lossless track in iTunes normally, but not it would seem when transferring to the iPod. And if this new method of encoding on the fly to the iPod can't preserve embedded artwork then it makes little sense to clog up the iPod with 6GB of artwork!
I am wondering if there is any setting I am missing to get this working, or if this is something Apple still need to get around to sorting,
    Thanks
    Nick

    Please!!
    I'm not silly...
As I said, selecting View actual size shows the image with sometimes drastically impaired quality (regardless of the window size).
I also said I have preferences set to view at 100%
It now seems as if this is only happening with scans I've made here.
Images downloaded from the internet are converting indentically, no problem. But my scans are being resized when converting.
I wonder if anyone with a bit of technical know-how can give me some clues as to why this is happening. It would seem to be something to do with the file itself.
(There was another post on here with the same problem but for some reason its been 'archived' though the last posting was this month and the query was not answered. So I've posted the question again.)

  • OLAP taking 5 time more space than RDBMS?

    Hello,
I have been investigating Oracle's OLAP capabilities for about 2 weeks now in an effort to determine whether OLAP would be a feasible solution for my company's data warehousing needs.
I have created an extremely simple analytic workspace that is based on a single relational fact table. The fact table contains both the dimension values (integers) and the measuers (floats). There are a total of about 300,000 dimension values all of which reference measures (the data is perfectly dense).
I created a dimension and a data cube using the Enterprise Manager OLAP interface. Next, I created the analytic workspace using the Analytic Workspace Manager wizard. This AW building step took an extraordinary amount of time considering the simplicity of the data. In fact, I started it on a Friday afternoon, monitored it for about 2 hours, and it still hadn't finished, so I let it run over the weekend (for this reason, I am not sure how much time exactly it took, but it's definitely quite a few hours). Is this normal? Copying the relational table takes 10 seconds, and I find it hard to believe that building an AW with the same data would take so much time.
Finally, coming back on Monday I see that the AW was created successfully. I went into the tablespace map to look at how big the binary blob is. To my great surprise, the AW was taking up about 5 times more extents than my relational table (contrary to what I've read so far about OLAP and its supposedly very storage-efficient data cubes).
I was wondering if anybody could advise me on what I could have done wrong and/or inefficiently? Am I missing something here, or is OLAP really consuming much more space comapred to relational tables?
    Thanks!

    Gotcha.
Well, here are a few ideas:
    1) There is a bug in the 9i OLAP where dimension loads take WAY too long. I have a dimension with approx 77,000 members. On 9i, it took hours to load. On 10g 10.1.0.3 it loads in under 1 minute. You might want to open a TAR, the bug was something about one of the patch sets not being applied right
    2) From a space standpoing, I wouldn't worry about this too much. When the AW wizard creates an "empty" workspace, it already has lots of items in it that support the metadata, etc. Also, there is the concept of "free pages" that get allocated but end up not being used (they are "temp")
To check this out, attach your AW and then fire up the OLAP worksheet. To see "free" pages vs. "used" pages, do the following:
    show aw(pages)
    show aw(freepages)
One last thing you can do, to see the size of all items in the AW:
    attach AWname ro first
    limit name to all
    sort name d obj(disksize)
    rpr w 40 obj(disksize)
This will show the "relative" size of the items, I think in "pages" (to see how big a page is just do a
    show aw(pagesize)
    Hope this helps!

Hard to say, as you provide almost no information..  I would guess that you are looking in the wrong place.

  • Artwork is on iTunes but not on iPod Classic

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a new iPod Classic and am having a problem with the album artwork.
When I have the iPod connected to iTunes (iTunes 12) and am on the iPod classic tab the album artwork is all perfectly fine and on the iPod but as soon as i disconnect the iPod, most of the artwork disappears and it is severely bugging me.
i dont know if it is a problem with iTunes or the iPod but I desperately need help!

Well, that's frustrating. I've already added artwork for hundreds of albums. And what's more, the downloaded-to-iPod artwork was visible for a while. It only stopped after I upgraded to a newer version of software (eitehr iTunes or iPod--can't remember which).

  • Why is "photos & camera" still taking up 1Gb of space on iphone?

I just installed all my photos on the new "photos" app on iPhone, Mac, and iPad, but under "Storage" the "photos & camera" is still taking up 1.0GB of space.  How do I move photos onto the iCloud so it doesn't take up space on my phone?  Also, how do I know if a photo is on the iCloud and not on my iPhone (or iPad) taking up space?
    Thank you

If you are using iCloud Photo Library, the photos will still be on your phone at take up some space. The most you can do is optimize the storage space required. See the quote below from iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support
Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?
iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:
In iOS, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
In OS X, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.
If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

  • Why is the other category taking up all my space?

All of a sudden my computer's hard drive has been consumed by this "other" category. Not too long ago we had half the space on our computer. And whenever I delete applications and such it all comes back. I deleted 11 GB of applications, and two days later it was all consumed by the other category. We didn't even download anything! What is going on and is there a solution?

  • Why is 350gb of files taking up 750gb of space?

I'm in a strange situation where my Macintosh HD says ive used 750gb but the individual folders within MacHD only total about 350gb
I've used a program called omnidisksweeper and I seem to have a 350gb volumes folder and a 340gb users folder in the same location with another user folder of 290gb in the volumes folder. I'm looking to find out if any of these arent necessary. I'm sure i dont need two users folders.
Here is a little info on the mac i've got:
    All help is appreciated.

    Here's the screenshot:
So Linc Davis i should just delete the Macintosh HD folder in the volumes folder? Do i need to rename the link to the Mac HD that is now called Macintosh HD1 (im assuming that this is what its for). Will it be okay to just delete the folder or do i need to do anything else?
Thanks for the replys by the way.

  • Why are 25gb of photos taking up 50gb of space on my hard drive?

Hi -- I'm a complete neophyte, so please bear with me.
I use I-Photo 6, which came with my refurbed Imac 2.16 ghz. So far, I've imported, via CDs and also via SD cards from my camera, about 25gb worth of photos.
The photos show up in my IPhoto library just fine, but the problem is that, for unknown reasons, the 25 gigs take up 50 gigs on my hard drive. So my question is ... what's going on?
Does this have anything to do with the "modified" vs "original" folders? Or with the "Data" folder within the Iphoto library?
Or does it have anything to do with the fact that I use another program as an 'external editor' -- Lightzone -- so that when I click on a photo for editing in Iphoto, I automatically go to Lightzone.
I assume there's some unnecessary duplication here -- help!

    yclnyc
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
iPhoto preserves your Original file at all times. All operations are carried out on a copy of the file. So when you edit a pic, iPhoto (in your case) sends a copy to Lightzone. When you save that edit in Lightzone the copy is sent straight back to iPhoto and yes, preserved in the Modified folder.
So you can have three versions of a pic in iPhoto - the Original, the Modified versions, plus the Thumbnail in the Data folder.
Here's a tip: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
There is no way to stop iPhoto working in this way. If you try to you will corrupt your library. If you do not want your Original file preserved then my best advice is don't use iPhoto.
That said, having a double size library seems excessive. Do you also sync with an iPod?
    Regards
    TD

  • Taking music out of another persons ipod classic!!

does anyone know how to take music from another persons ipod and putting them on a disc or putting them on your itunes music library on a mac computer?

Yes. Because one person made the purchase and two persons are using that purchase separately. If two is OK, why not 100, or 1000, or a million "buddies"?
I respect that Apple pays to run and moderate this forum. If I answered your question, someone would take the time to edit or remove my post, because Apple does not want to be seen as facilitating music piracy.
I'm not saying what you should or should not do. I'm just saying you should not ask the question in Apple's discussion forum.

  • Music Taking Up way more Space than before.  What is the best file format?

I just bought a new Mac Book, and have been importing most of my CD collection into I-tunes to put on my Ipod Video. The Default in iTunes seems to be import using AAC Encoder at a setting of High Quality 128kbps.
However, I only have 2800 songs in my library at the moment andit is using 17 gb of Hard drive space on my computer and my Ipod. Also all songs came in as MP4 format.
Before getting this new computer, I had the same amount of songs and it used about half of that.
    I have 3 questions.
1.) What is the best format to cut the amount of space used, but still have a high quality sound.
2.) Is there a way to convert what is in the library to another format such as mp3.
3.) is this going to require me to save my Itunes folder to an external drive, delete the library, and then drag all back in to itunes after changing the preference setting? What is the best way to do this?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I only have 2800 songs in my library at the moment andit is using 17 gb of
    Maybe a bit high.
    I have ~2500 songs at 12 GB. I’m using 160 kbps - AAC.
1.) What is the best format to cut the amount of space used, but still have a high quality sound.
AAC - 128 kbps. This is the default for iTunes and offers a very good compromise between size and quality.
To me, AAC 128 kbps is at least as good as MP3 160 kbps and the AAC would be 1/3 less the size.
2.) Is there a way to convert what is in the library to another format such as mp3.
Yeah, buit you don;t really want to do it that way as you will lose further quality.
AAC is a lossy format and when you converted it the first time, you lose quality. If you reconvert that to MP3, you will lose further quality.
3.) is this going to require me to save my Itunes folder to an external drive, delete the library, and then drag all back in to itunes after changing the preference setting?
    No.

  • Why is it that Apple no longer offers games for the ipod classic?

I just purchased an ipod classic and i just realized that I can't find any games for download on itunes. I also have an ipod nano and I know that Apple used to offer games for ipods other than the touch. Now they act like the touch is the only ipod that exists. I'm starting to think i should just return the ipod and go with a different brand of Mp3. My family has been telling me to get a Cowon and now I'm starting to wish i'd listened.
Thanks a lot Apple. You might be getting this product back.

  • Apps Taking Up Significantly More Space Than The Size of the App

I'm having an issue where the meter for my iPad registers a significantly higher hard drive usage to "Apps" than the apps file size in the list. It's showing 5.4 GB, when the total size of the apps installed is 240 MB. I do have VLC and two videos synced totallying .5 GB. I also have Kindle with four books installed. Generously that's 10 MB.
That's a 4 GB difference between what I can attribute and what iTunes says. Anyone have any ideas what could cause such a disparity?

I know that some note apps still have your notes in the data files after they are deleted. Paper Desk never completely deletes a note. I can see deleted notes in the transfer section in iTunes. I wish they had a way of wiping those files clean. What I do is I delete the app and then re- install it after I save the notes I want to keep. I'm not happy with this problem. I'm sure other apps have the same problem.
