Why is OS X Mavericks so much brighter?

So I just put in OS X Mavericks in my Mac Mini (2011) and the screen automatically just looks so much brighter. I realize that it's because I have an HD screen which makes anything clearer, but Mountain Lion never appeared to be that clear before. I know I sound stupid asking such a question but I'm just all kinds of happy now as my vision isn't that good sometimes.

You have a 2012 Macbook Air,......it is very possible you need to run the firmware update first, Mavericks cannot install until doing same on your 2012 unit in some cases of 64gig or 128gig certain Toshiba SSD
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1690
“This update tests your drive and, in the majority of cases, installs new firmware to resolve the issue. If your drive cannot be updated, Apple will replace it, free of charge”
If your MacBook Air has an affected flash drive, please contact one of the Apple service providers below to schedule an appointment to get your drive replaced:
http://www.apple.com/support/macbookair-flashdrive/
choose the MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1. The firmware update will test your drive to see if it is affected. You will be directed back to this page for next steps if needed.

  • I do not have many messages but my iphone 5s says messages take up 4.6GB of space.  When comparing with friends who have many more message, less than 1 GB is being used on their phones.  Why are mine taking up so much space and how do I correct that?

    I do not have that many messages on my new iPhone 5s (maybe about 15 conversations and only one or two going back a little ways) yet when I go to Settings, Usage it shows that my messages are taking up 4.6GB of space.  When comparing with others (some who have hundeds of messages) they are using under 1GB for their messages.  Why are mine taking up so much space??

    I found a post with this solution that worked for me - .Do a backup, then download ibackupbot. It lets you look into the contents of that backup. Look in system files>mediadomain>library>sms>attachments. I found a ton of huge files related to long deleted texts. ibackupbot let me delete all that old crap. I then restored the phone with that now modifec backup and Bingo! freed up 9 GB. No problems.
    But note, if you are not technically inclined you probaly don't want to be digging around and deleting back up files. You delete the wrong thing and you could jack up your phone badly. Be careful.

  • Why are Windows 'APP's so much harder to code than a Windows Forms application?

    For example I have been smashing my head against a wall trying to save an image file from a share target, the best help I can find is the below code:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/65a61679-0da8-4109-8a69-b918be351dfa/how-to-save-a-bitmap-image-from-a-share-target?forum=winappswithcsharp&prof=required
    But in a 'normal' application I can do what I need to do with:
    using System;
    using System.Drawing;
    namespace Project1
    class Class1
    static void Main()
    Image photo = Image.FromFile("C:\\Temp\\oldphoto.png");
    photo.Save("C:\\Temp\\newphoto.png");
    Why do the APPs take so much more code to do something like save a file to disk?

    It is a good question!
    If you need 100 lines of code to save an image it is like a Java program:
    - complicated
    - not fun to develop with
    I think the main problem is that Microsoft release 2 new libraries each year. On the most cases, if you try to compile it with an old library it works, but the app crashes with unexpected errors. It is always harder to develop for Windows and there
    are always more libraries to use.
    So it begun to be normal, to find a W8-store-app-library and use it in Silverlight, to add missing functionality.
    It is a jungle and it seems that Microsoft too doesn't know anymore what library should be in the msdn-help. Some times, if you search for something, you finish on a library that can't be added to your project.
    This is the reason, because your question will probably never be answered!

  • After upgrading to Mavericks, F14/F15 brightness adjustments don't work

    After upgrading to Mavericks, F14/F15 brightness adjustments don't work.  The screen appears to be "locked" at the dimmest brightness level.  How do I adjust the brightness?

    I am home now and I just confirmed that I have a brightness control slide in my Sys Pre---> Display. However, this for my Apple Cinema display. When I was using another name brand, this wasn't available to me. Nor could I use F1 and F2.
    I also went to Sys Pre---> Keyboard---> Shortcuts---> Display---> Changed those values to F5 and F6, since they were free for me. And they were able to change the brightness for me. Went to test them, and I was just given that error chim and nothing on the display changed.
    So I went on down the list... Accessibility---> checked Contrast and changed those to F5 and F6. Ahhh, now I can change that. Now I know that I can use the F5 and F6 for something.
    I know that you are talking about brightness, but double check the Contrast settings to see if you were mistaking the two. After years of setting my TV with Video Essentials, I still get the two mixed up from time to time.

    What is "Other" and why does it take up so much space?

    What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
    An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
    "First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:
    How do I get rid of "other" storage: Apple Support Communities
    Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

    First go the Bridge / Camera Raw preferences.
    Inhere under 'default image settings' are 4 options to put a checkmark in front.
    If there is a checkmark in front of "apply auto tone adjustments' deselect it and try again.
    Otherwise select one problem file and with right mouse click menu choose 'purge cache for selection'. If this works then go to menu tools / cache/ purge cache for folder.
    If still in trouble could you provide more details about versions and OS and preferable a screenshot to clarify the problem more?

  • Why do photos take up so much space on my phone?

    I have an iPhone 5, 16 gigs. I have 174 photos and 22 videos and it says that the photos take up 3.6g of my memory... My friend has over 2k photos and hers is at 4gigs. I saved my photos to iPhoto and I deleted all my photos and ran a test, I made sure photos were at 0gigs; Then i took 30 random photos and checked and it said that it took up 124mbs. 30 photos 124mbs. I don't understand why my photos take up so much space. I also bought the Beyonce album when it came out and thats the only music I bought and it says it takes up 1.1gigs and the 17 videos are at 974 mbs. help????

    Import the photos to your computer, then sync them back with iTunes. The photos will be reduced in size and quality to fit on the iPhone without taking as much space as the original pictures.
    Also make sure not to use HDR mode if you do not need that feature.
    After you import your photos from Camera Roll or Saved Photos, you can use iTunes to sync them back to your device.

  • Why do Mac's rock so much?

    Why do Mac's rock so much? I don't even own one and I'm all excited. My colleagues and customers use them, so I'm always in the vicinity of a Mac. I wonder if this worries the Microsoft peeps? I have an ipod.
    Toshiba Satellite A10   Windows XP   waiting for dual core ibook...

    Do you have any problems with compatibility between the two systems? Or do you not need to transfer much?
    As far as developing Mac apps, if sales of Macs go up because of being able to run both Windows and OSX on the same machine like I think they will, that will be the best incentive of all for people to develop more Mac software - a much larger market to sell to. Imagine if Apple sales double or triple, we'd probably get and explosion of apps being made for it. Mac user would still prefer to use a Mac program whenever possible.
    And I do run into the occasional situation when a Windows machine would be useful. My wife just bought some new phones for the house with all kinds of programming possibilities but the disk that came with them is only for XP. My cell phone is not backed up because there is no way to do it on a Mac. I can only buy Palm PDAs because they are the only ones that are Mac compatible. There is Missing Sync that can be used for PocketPC's but they are limited and there would still be some programs and features I wouldn't be able to use. Now, I like Palm's a great deal so it's not a real problem but I would like the option of getting something else.
    And most of all, my all time favorite game - Macbrickout - which has never been upgrade to OSX and will not open into Classic would be available as Winbrickout. That alone would be worth it to me.

  • Why are the photos i print much darker than the monitor image?

    why are the photos i print much darker than the monitor image?

    Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What operating system? What program are you printing from?
    Some programs such as Photoshop give the option to print to CMYK or sRGB color spaces.  Even though the printer uses CMYK inks the driver is expecting sRGB data.  If CMYK is selected the prints will be much too dark.
    Another thing to check is the media type.  If you are printing on plain paper and have seelcted Photo paper the prints have too much ink.

  • .movs are much brighter than Self contained export after Compression

    Hey there, I have a very interesting problem....
    My .movs after using compressor are much brighter than the original self contained file from FCP.
    My workflow is as follows
    1. I make one export from final cut 6 as a self contained pro res movie file
    2. I open the self contained file in compressor and add a h264 setting for both a .mov and a wmv
    After the encoding process is done my wmv is very close to the original sequence in FCP, however my .mov is much brighter
    I have tried adjusting the brightness and contrast within Compressor settings, but I find I' m losing color. The original footage is HDV and we are capturing it as Pro Res.
    Does this sound familiar to anyone? Or any suggestions?

    After a day of tedious test work I have discovered a few things....
    There is a display setting within QT preferences that says 'Enable FCP' this corrects the situation as WMV and .MOVS use different color settings and therefore a discrepancy in gamma. However this is only a solution within that computer, as it is merely a display option.
    There is a gamma filter within compressor that gives us the best results for a blanket compressor setting that allows us change all .movs that go to our clients.
    This does not give identical results between WMV and MOV but a very close comparison.
    Will they ever be identical? or is it a fundamental difference between codecs and platforms?

    Why can I not preform a search on FAQ's?
    FF is sucking up way too much CPU time from 30 to 98% for great/long periods of time on a Sony Vaio laptop platform running P4 CPU w/XP prof w/SP3 & 2Gb RAM.
    Why can I not preform a search on FAQ's so that might not have repeat a question that might have been asked previously?
    Searching 24xx pages is not my idea of how to spend precious time to find an answer that I am looking for.

    Safe mode or turning off the plugins does not work with this bug. If they are still installed firefox will open plugincontainer, the plugins need to be uninstalled or disabled at OS level.
    "''clearing Cookies will start an instance of plugin-container for almost all of the plugins installed on the system, regardless of enable/disable state for each one.''"

  • Why do my colors print dark on my printer but display much brighter on my screen?

    I'm on Adobe CC and use a PC that runs Windows 7. I noticed once we updated to Adobe CC the colors on my monitor are much richer but are actually much darker and muddy when I send the files to printer. This is especially evident in Illustrator. I even used a CMYK Pantone color for accuracy (which was a color of wine) but displayed magenta in Illustrator! Then I thought, maybe it was my NVIDIA Control Panel. So I adjusted my desktop color settings to match the colors I was going for but while that somewhat helped I knew it wasn't the answer when I noticed that the websites I went were not displaying the correct colors because they were hard to read. I am stuck and have no idea what to do. Can anyone help?

    Downgrade to previous CS where color was color.  Seriously, if you were getting correct color on output and the color appeared correctly on your monitor before you updated, then there's where the problem is.  The update.

  • Why the 'LIKE' operator takes so much time to run?

    I have a table T with 3 columns and 3 indexes:
    CREATE TABLE T
    id VARCHAR2(38) NOT NULL,
    fid VARCHAR2(38) NOT NULL,
    val NVARCHAR2(2000) NOT NULL
    ALTER TABLE T ADD (CONSTRAINT pk_t PRIMARY KEY (id,fid));
    CREATE INDEX t_fid ON T(fid);
    CREATE INDEX t_val ON T(val);
    Then I have the following two queries which differ in only one place - the 1st one uses the '=' operator whereas the 2nd uses 'LIKE'. Both queries have the identical execution plan and return one identical row. However, the 1st query takes almost 0 second to execute, and the 2nd one takes more than 12 seconds, on a pretty beefy machine. I had played with the target text, like placing '%' here and/or there, and observed the similar timing every time.
    So I am wondering what I should change to make the 'LIKE' operator run as fast as the '=' operator. I know CONTEXT/CATALOG index is a viable approach, but I am just trying to find out if there is a simpler alternative, such as a better use of the index t_val.
    1) Query with '=' operator
    SELECT id
    FROM T
    WHERE fid = '{999AE6E4-1ED9-459B-9BB0-45C913668C8C}'
    AND val = '3504038055275883124';
    2) Query with 'LIKE' operator
    SELECT id
    FROM T
    WHERE fid = '{999AE6E4-1ED9-459B-9BB0-45C913668C8C}'
    AND val LIKE '3504038055275883124';
    Execution Plan
    0 SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer=ALL_ROWS (Cost=1 Card=1 Bytes=99)
    1 0 TABLE ACCESS (BY INDEX ROWID) OF 'T' (Cost=1 Card=1 Bytes=99)
    2 1 INDEX (RANGE SCAN) OF 'T_VAL' (NON-UNIQUE) (Cost=4 Card=12)

    I will for sure try to change the order of the PK and see whether there will be any impact to the performance.
    In our application, val is much closer to a unique value than fid. In the example query, the execution plan showed that the index on val was indeed used in the execution of the query. That's why the 1st query took almost no time to return (our table T has more than 6 million rows).
    I was hoping the 'LIKE' operator would utilize the t_val index effectively and provide similar performance to the '=' operator. But apparently that's not the case, or needs some tricks.

  • Why does "other" take up so much space on my iPhone?

    I got an iPhone 5s 16 GB at the end of June 2014.  I keep running out of memory and when I recently plugged my phone into iTunes, I noticed that "other" is taking up around 3 GB of space. I know the usual delete pictures and browsing history spiel, and I've done it all. People also say that Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage is a good way to tell what is taking up space, but I went there and manually added all of the numbers and they only add up to 8.6 GB vs the 11.6 that my phone says is occupied, leaving an extra 3 GB unaccounted for and confirming my suspicions that "other" is not included in this. People keep telling me it's the operating system but isn't that already taken out of the original 16 GB and why you really only have 12 GB of storage to begin with? As I was looking through different forums and discussions, people kept saying to restore the iPhone from the iTunes backup and I am wondering if that would actually work...does anyone have experience with this? (Also would this delete my apps and music as well? I'm not very familiar with the restore from backup and could not really find any good information on it.) Do I just have to live with "other" eating up this much space on my phone? I've had iPods and I have an iPad, and I've never had this problem. Any help at all would be very appreciated, as this is very frustrating. Thanks.
