Why is osx continuously caching external disk?

While I am -using an/any application that does- reading from an  external disk, free memory continuously decreases and inactive memory  increases with the same amount, which is aproximately the amount of data  read. At some time, os starts paging and the system renders useless,  forcing me to reboot.
Closing the application or using another usb slot has no effect, I have to eject the USB or use purge -which makes other applications sluggish-. Format of the -external  drive's- partition (GUID, MBR),(HFS+, FAT32, NTFS) does not matter. All  of the drives are excluded from Spotlight (are not indexed). I have
OSXFuse but that is only for Truecrypt, info about partitions show native drivers.
Why is osx continuously caching external disk, can a  configuration/app/plugin cause this, is there a way to avoid this? Is  there a selective purge command for external disk cache? Does anybody have this problem with external drives, and also with Mavericks?

  • Remove Mac OSX installation from external disk

    Hello,
I installed an extra max osx installation on an external disk. So i can starup from my HD or my ext disk depending on my start up disk choice. Everything works fine. Unfortunately i installed it in a partition with a lot off backup files in it, instead of creating a new partition dedicated only to the OS. I was wondering if there is a clean way of removing this installation without completely formatting the ext.disk again, so that i don't loose my data.
    Thanks

I hope you don't mind my jumping in. AFAIK, dumping the OS X files isn't a simple process because many of it's files and folders are hidden. It appears that the ext HD has more than one partition. If so, move your data to the other, then you can erase the partition, removing all of OS X's stuff. However, doing that looses your bootable backup. Details WRT to the HD, its size, number of partitions, how much used and free space, etc. should help to determine a strategy that saves the data and also provides for a bootable backup.

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • Why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?

why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?  I have the 10.7.4 on both.  The MBP came with it so I installed it onto the hard drive i have been using the same way with an older macbook pro but the new MBP does not see the startup disk.  So i installed the same version of the os onto the MBP by hooking it up to my imac as a target disk because it would not recognize the install usb stick.  Now the brand new MBP doesnt start up

I had the same issue.  The 2012 macbook pro has a different 10.7.4 build that is not yet available for public release.  It won't boot no matter how much you try.  You need to wait for Mountain Lion and create a start up disk from ML.  Apple most likely will release a 10.7.4 update for the 2012 models, but they are focused on ML now.

  • TS1963 Migrating from Time Machine onExternal Disk,  Why won't Migration Assistant see my USB Connected external disk drive?

I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3.   The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files.  After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up.  I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive.  It also did not see the backup drive.  The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from?  I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?)  Or  do I just not understand.  Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up  the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that no one replied to this.  But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it.  As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files.  If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon.  You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore.  The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD.  That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive.  It is labeled  the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog.  I wasted several hours trying to make it work  Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system.  I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant.  Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user.

  • Why is Firefox 3.6 continually accessing the disk

Firefox is alwyas consuming a small amount of CPU on my machine. Using Process Monitor I can see it seems to be polling the temporary folder every half a second looking for a file with a TMP extension. Each time the name of the files is different the numeric part incrementing by one, for example the last time i looked it was checking for files A9r4567.tmp, then A9r4568.tmp so on. On top of this every ten seconds or so it will write out a the sessionstore file again. this is all without me doing anything in FireFox at all just simply having the app running, without the window in the foreground.
I'm assuming the sessionstore is simply keeping it up to date as a backup and maybe there is a setting for get it to do that less frequently, seems odd that it needs to do it when I have not browsed to a new page or anything else. Possibly some page is refreshing some content via AJAX and maybe thats triggering who knows. But why is it continually scanning the temp folder for these incrementaly named files, none of which exist (thats clear from looking in the folder and the fact in process monitor the response to that call is "NO SUCH FILE".

Ok I found out a bit more from a little more digging. I managed to trace the calls back through to nppdf32.dll which i believe is the adobe acrobat PDF reader plugin. So next question obviosuly is what on earth is that doing, which I guess is not a mozille firefox issue but an adobe one.

  • Why cant I see my external hard disk on finder?

I disconnected mt external backup disk without ejecting it first, now it doesn't show in Finder when I connect it. Is there anything I can do?

On a Windows system, on boot up it would say something like -- this disk is damaged and must be repaired. With Mac it just doesn't mount. As Axeman1020 says, I'd try turning the disk off, waiting 30 seconds, turning it on, bringing up Disk Utility and seeing if the external disk is visible. if so, I'd try a repair, or at least a check.
It's rare that the disk would be unrepairable. If it was disconnected while writing during a power surge like a nearby lightning strike, there could be actual damage to the disk and then you might be in trouble. It could be worse, it could be the internal disk/SSD.

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15' will not boot an external disk from a Mid-2012 MAcbook Pro. What should I do?

In order to simplify moving all my files from the previous mid-2012 macbook pro 15' when moving to my new late-2013 macbook pro, i superdup-ed the full hard-disk to an external ssd. Unfortunatelly the new mac resuses to boot from this external disk (i get the grey disk with a line over it). The external disk works just fine so if I boot the new mac from its internal SSD I can read/write the external disk without problems.
Old OS X is 10.9 as is the OS on the new mac.
What I need to do is to boot the new mac from the external ssd, use the same superduper to copy the external content onto the internal ssd.
How can I solve this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you made a backup of your files with SuperDuper, use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) to transfer your files from the external drive > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user account with the transferred files, so you may want to merge both user accounts > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro uses a special OS X Mavericks version which makes OS X compatible with it, and older OS X versions do not work with it. That's the reason why you cannot start up from the external drive created from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • Can I install Snow Leopard with an external disk drive?

I have been trying to update my software to Snow Leopard but I am using an external disk drive and when I try to install the software I get the message "The application 'Install Mac OS X' cannot be used from this volume". Is there any way to fix this problem?

Are you booting your computer from an external drive? If so please say why? How are you trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard? Do you have the 10.6.3 retail Snow Leopard DVD? On what drive are you trying to install Snow Leopard? Are you doing this?
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Install Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with installing OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then use Software Update to download and install any other needed updates for Snow Leopard.

  • External Disk Space

So I just got an external disk for storing imovie projects. However, when I am actually using the file in iMovie, are the cache files being kept on the OSX startup disk or the external Drive? I ask to know whether I should reserve a certain percentage of the external disk to maximize performance as required by the startup disk under OSX.

Thanks Karl, but I was referring to the OSX Virtual Memory management. Most non-destructive functions are written to the disk as memory when real RAM is not avilable and Apple recommends at least 1GB free, with most practical applications being at least 5 and the more the merrier. I've heard as much as 10% of the disk should be kept free at all times to speed operations. My question is whether iMovie stores its temporary RAM files on the external disk on which the project resides or on the startup disk. If the external, then I have to reserve at least 5GB.

  • Can't do factory restore & only disks that keep ejecting are the osx install and apps disks

First of all let me say, this is my first Apple computer and I'm not experienced in forums. Please do not read rudeness into what is actually frustration at searching forever for a solution and trying not to wish I had been talked into an Apple.  With that said....
I've had my iMac for about a year and a half.  We had lost our internet and were using a hotspot for awhile so we could look for another provider and get online if we needed to.  One day I signed on and, we didn't have an isp mind you, but the browser opened up to the dominant isp in this area saying a virus was detected coming from this iMac address? I thought that was strange and panicked so decided to do what I would on a pc, just restore the whole thing to factory settings.  Everything was going smooth, (my updates were at 10.6.8 at the time)... when I restored I was back at 10.6.2. (osx disk) I was doing systems updates and one apparently hung.... when told to restart, I did... but the computer would never boot back up.  It would turn on.... go to gray screen... then blue screen... then shut off.  I couldn't boot in safe mode, pram reset did nothing, smc reset did nothing, couldn't hold 'd' to get to diagnostics, couldn't boot to recovery... it kept spitting out disks after trying to read them... with all those solutions I found online and nothing helping I had to call Apple... they couldn't help over the phone because Apple Care expired, unless I purchased help... this frustrated me because every where I found my problem and a different solution their Apple Care had expired too.... so had to set an appt at an Apple store.
So took it in to Apple, just got it back yesterday.  I let them know I was restoring to factory settings so wasn't worried about losing anything.  When I picked it up, I was told no charge... it was a software issue they saw where it hung and fixed it.  I tried to ask questions about the 'software repair' but they didn't seem to want to answer my questions.  It just says 'software repair' on my order. So I asked 'okay, so it's back to factory settings like when I bought it?' I was told yes and I said great that was my goal anyway.  I get home and it's NOT like when I first purchased it or like a factory restore.  Everything I was doing before it crashed is on there. So I'm back to trying to do a factory restore.  But for some reason now, it seems the only disks that keep self ejecting are the osx install and application disks. I still can't do a boot recovery, AHT, or 'c' boot... since the apple disks eject I can't use start up to get to them.
I find it odd that both the oxc install disk and applications disk would be damaged at the same time when they both previously worked.  I called the Apple Store where I took it to talk to the geniuses that worked on it because I had a question about the repair they did....
Apple: I'm sorry we don't offer tech support
Me: I understand but I had a question about the repair done from there the other day
Apple: We are just a store and can't answer tech questions
Me: I understand and get that but since I took my mac to your store to be worked on I thought I could ask the person that worked on it a question about the 'software repair' and meaning and what software was repaired
Apple: No you will have to set another apt to bring your computer in if you are still having problems
    Me: UGHHHHHH (pulling hair out)
So (a little late huh?) to make a long story short giving what I stated above:
Why is it, only the osx install and application disks not working now? They worked before taking it to Apple
What can I do at this point?
Can you do a factory restore without disks on a Mac?
If by chance both disk did for some reason go out, how do I get them replaced?
If I gave TMI without enough important info let me know.
My OS X install disk says version 10.6.2 on it
About this Mac currently says Mac OS X version 10.6.8
Batteries died on keyboard and mouse so am using usb wired keyboard and mouse
At some point I had used bootcamp and then later found parallels so I could install a Corel product and keep using... could some windows files be messing something up in there somewhere?
It used to say Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and I could have sworn I saw it said 'snow leopard' in there somewhere, now I can't even find that word in search on the computer. Long post I know but trying to set what was going on at the time I took it in.
I'm not sure what else needs to be added to get this to the correct thread or help.  As I stated my goal is to have it like I just pulled it out of the box for the first time so no solution will scare me off about loss of data.
    Thanks for any help.

Wow, sorry to hear of your experience. Seems strange that your disk would just eject like they did. It could be a lot of things but more than likely you just kind of have to start all over.
What I would do is insert your system disk and instead of going immediately to an install I would go to disk utility and erase the drive. That will erase everything on the disk and give you a new blank disk to start with. After that I would try to reinstall the system. Assuming that goes well then you should be restored to where it was when you purchased it. After that you can reinstall all your applications or personal files. I hope you have good backups.
I remember one time I was having a similar problem and don't ask my why I did it but I actually could not get it to install a system. I removed both of my ram sticks, shut the computer down for about 10 minutes including unplugging it from the wall plug, then reinstalled the ram, plugged it back in and started up from the system disk and all worked just fine. To this day I have no idea if pulling the ram helped but I have never had to do it since and for some dumb reason that solved the problem I was having, which is the same problem you are having now. Call it voodoo but it worked.
    Good Luck!!

  • How do I link an iTunes Library (on an external disk) ?

    Hi all,
I'd like to keep my huge collection on external drives.
I was able to link the correct playlist (on external disk which was cloned from my previous Mac).
    What exactly should I link?
For example: in Aperture, I just select the Aperture Library on my external drive and all my pics are available (obviously if the drive is plugged in).
In iTunes I don't see this option... The only thing I see is the iTunes Media Folder Location option... which I don't really understand why is not there on my external hard drive.
    Any idea?
    Thanks

If you have the whole iTunes library (media files, library files, genius, artwork, etc.) on an external drive hold down the option key while starting iTunes, navigate to the external, and it will use the iTunes folder on the external.  This is all too often confused with just keeping media (but not the library files or artwork) on an external which is the setting you see in Preferences.
