Why is other taking so much space?

I've never liked icloud cuz it always wants so much space.. anyways i had an ipod 5th gen witch i dropped and got it replaced and b4 I replaced I did a full backup on my computer, now that i got the new one.  I restored it all, but on summary on itunes There is a bar at the bottom with all of the data on usage and no apps were installed and then there was a yellow bar that says other and its taking 12.14GB from me but idk what its doing!!!! I already when on itunes and got all my apps but Im afraid I cant put all of them on it because other took so much space! please help

Other consists of emails, app data, notes, and other miscellaneous things. By no means should it be a considerable amount of space, however.
Best suggestion would be to back up in iCloud and restore as new.

  • Why does "Other" take so much space on iPad vs. iPod touch?

When I plug the iPad into my iMac, I ownder why the Other category is so much larger than that for my Touch. The iPad is 32 GB, while the Touch is 16 GB. The are similary loaded with my music, photos and apps, but that Other thing is way much larger.
    Any thoughts?

Found the answer in another thread. Went from 7.2 GB to 1.12 GB after restore and backup.

  • "Other" Taking too much space...

My iPad 3 has had ios7 for a while now and just in the last month or so "other" has taken about 8 gb of memory. What is inside "other" and how do I reduce it?

    What is other
It’s generally a combination of local caches from apps, browsers, mail, Messages, Reading List, saved games, app-specific documents and data, notes, and voice memos.
You may want to backup and restore.

  • Arch taking to much space?

    Ok here are my partitions:
    /dev/hda1 41.13MB ext2
    /dev/hda2 271.44MB swap
    /dev/hda3 79711.19MB ext3
So my HD is 80GB but, I have only installed: the arch base system with the arch-base.iso and
gnome, gnome-extras, xorg, firefox, openoffice, java development kit. And when I look at how much space / partition is taking it says 3.4 GB so that may leave out of 79711.19MB it shold have 76GB of free space but lets put it 71GB as acceptable. But nautilus tell me there is only 67GB free. Why is this happening is this a bug or arch is taking to much space. In a complete Gentoo install with the same setup and installations it says 71GB free. ANy one knows what is making this happen?
Note: in gentoo I used reiserfs and after switching to arch and loving it am using ext3.

Ah, got it: By default ext3 reserves 5% space for the root user, so that things can be done when the system is full (like logging in etc.)
    74 * 0.95 - 2.1 = 68.2
You can change it with tune2fs -m.
Now when I grow up I want to be like you. . out of joke now, thanks for making me see what was happening I greatly apreciate your interest. Now I see this is a good thing of ext3 in my opinion.
BTW, what is tune2fs -m ? what does it do?

  • The "other" is taking too much space on my phone?

Its almost six gb. What could that be?

You cannot remove the core apps included with the iOS.  You could try clearing safari's cache:Clear History & Website Data.  Depending on what third party apps you use, they may have a cache clearing function as well.  Go to General->Usage then under storage tap Manage Storage.  There you will see how much space each app is using.  Sometimes deleting & reinstalling an app can clear up valuable storage space.  Cleaning up messages, emails, & photos can also free up space.
    Hope this helps!

  • "Other" Category taking SOOOO much space

    Hi Apple Community.
its been almost 2 years that ive had my imac and im very happy with it. NEVER going back to PC. However im always concerned about my memory, and just today i checked my storage and BANG there was 100GB of memory taken by the "other" category on my flash storage and 269.46GB taken by the "Other" Category on my 2TB SATA Disk. PLEASE help me get rid of these. i understand the SATA disk space because ive got Parrallels disktop using memory on sata disk but i dont understand how 100GB is taken by other category in my flash storage! HELP PLEASE

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • My iMovie videos are taking too much space

I want to burn all my iMovie videos from my iPad to a DVD, because they are taking up too much space.  Does anybody know how to do this, or have any better suggestions?
    Thanks

You have to transfer them to a computer first how you do that depend on the type of computer
And then burn it on a dvd there are tons of free software which let you burn movies to dvds

  • Need to find out what is taking so much space.

    Hi,
I have an iPod touch 2nd generation 8 GB, and since I have so less, I need to see how much space is being taken up. I need an app that helps tell me what specific apps are taking up a lot of space, and I would prefer this app to be free. Even if it's not free, please tell me an app.
    Thanks!!

when you sync your iPod to the computer it moves purchased content in this case apps to your computer, this is where the term sync applies because you are making the iPod the same (or synced)as the computer and vice versa than upon syncing you can check for the size in iTunes like was suggested above

  • Why it is taking too much time to kill the process?

    Hi All,
Today, one of my user ran the calc script and the process is taking too much time, then i kill the process. I am wondering about one thing here even it is taking too long to kill the process, generally it will not take more than 2 sec. I did this through EAS.
After that I ran Maxl statement
    alter system kill request 552599515;
there is no use at all.
Please reply if you have any solutions to kill this process.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ram.

    Hi Ram,
    1. Firstly, How much time does your calculation scripts normally run.
    2. While it was running, you can go to the logs and monitor where exactly the script is taking time .
    3. Sometimes, it does take time to cancel a transaction ( as it might be in between).
    4. Maxl is always good to kill ,as you did . It should be succesful . Check the logs what it says ,and also the "sessions" which might say "terminating" and finish it off.
    5. If nothing works ,and in the worst case scenarion , if its taking time without doing anything. Then log off all the users and stop the databas and start it .
    6. Do log off all the users, so that you dont corrupt any filter related sec file.
Be very careful , if its production ( and I assume you have latest backups)
