Why is Pages so unstable?  Too many photos

I'm doing a 75 page book with up to 15 images on a page per client requirement. After about 7 pages the app crashes. Bought a new Mac Pro with 5.5 ram and ample hd space with fresh installs and still crashes. What is going on. Tried with more fresh installs on other new drives with the absolutely virgin Leopard that has been fully upgraded...more crashes.

I have similar problems. Pages crashes frequently with a large project (90 pages with about 500 photos). This occurs on my PowerMac G5 (4.5GB ram) and also on a MacPro at the local Apple store. This is really disappointing -- I have many hours of work about to be lost. The crashes are random, with the crash report indicating a memory/kernel protection problem. This is clearly a serious bug, and Apple needs to fix it. Based on my experience, its not a user problem or corrupt file.
BTW, you can look at the contents of your pages project with the Finder "Show Package Contents" option (control or right click on the pages document). In my case it contains image files (jpg) that originated in Aperture as previews, I believe. It also contains an XML file with the guts of the document and finally some other files. The point is that Pages (and Keynote too) have a fairly simply file structure under the hood.
There was some mention about corrupt photos. I don't think this is the case. However, I often get messages from Pages complaining that an image I attempted to drop from Aperture to Pages is corrupt. It is clearly not corrupt -- this message must be due to some other error that caused a failure. I have seen this enough to know that I don't have corrupt images -- and doubt that other users have corrupt images.
It is noteworthy that my 90 page document consumes 3GB real memory and even more virtual. This is absurd for a document whose file is only 100 MB. This points to some naive programming and quality testing. Apple needs to test this software on real documents, not just toy problems designed by programmers for programmers.

  • How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to upgrade to Aperture?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

  • Keyword Search showing too many photos

I have over 22,000 photos and over 300 keywords for them.  Sadly I cannot search by keyword since the keyword list only shows the last 146 keywords on the screen (a known bug that, in my case, only shows keywords beginning with p-z) and there is no way to scroll to any keywords before it.  I have therefor taken to entering the keywords manual in the "all" field, which worked fine in iPhoto 08, but reveals way too many photos in iPhoto 11.  From what I can tell, if there is one photo with that keyword in any given event, it will show me every photo in that event.  So, for example, if I want to see "Jane" and there is one photo of Jane in the Hawaii" event, it will show me every photo in the "Hawaii" event.
I have occassioanlly stumbled upon workarounds for this, I think entering a space after the keyword or something, but can't recall any concrete solution that seems to work now.  Can anyone help me with this extremely frustrating problem?  (And I know about Smart Albums.  That won't solve this one.)

Did you ever solve this problem. I have it too and it's driving me crazy.

    No.
    Have a current backup.
Hold the option command keys and launch iPhoto to launch the First aid.
Start with repairing permissions first and proceed from there.

    Sharon-
    Good idea.
    Back up first.
I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

  • Iphoto does not load into iDVD- too many photos?

Recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6 and iLife '09. Ever since, iPhoto will not load into iDVD (iphoto 8.0 and iDVD 7.0.3). When trying to open current and new projects in iDVD, the project opens, and plays, but the photos from iPhoto never load, the loading icon just spins on and on. When I open a new document, the same thing happens. Tried trashing preferences in both programs, reinstalling iLife, and reparing permissions. All software updates are current. Still won't work.
I am starting to wonder if it has to do with the number of photos I have in iPhoto, which is about 4000. The photos loaded with no problem until I upgraded. Could it be that the upgrades in iPhoto just make the files too large, and it's too much to expect that many photos to load? Does anyone know how many photos is too many,— or can you suggest anything I have not tired that might work?

This is from Mac Help. It is a good idea to create another account to use in troubleshooting situations such as this. After you create the new account, open iDVD from that account. Try creating a small project to see if you are having the same problems. Post back with your results.
_Adding a new user account to your computer_
You can create individual user accounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete to cancel.

  • Can too many Photos slow down a Mac Pro?

Hi, I have atleast 100,000 photos on my pc, would this many photos slow down a 2.66GHz quad core mac pro with 6 gigs of memory? thanks

I have 60,000. I use non-boot drive of course for data. Some people have huge music and video libraries of 2TB spanning 2-3 drives on stripped RAIDs.
Mac Pro and OS X really likes RAM, and the base for DDR3 8-core is to have 6 DIMMs and I'd go with 6 x 2GB, either Apple or 3rd party RAM, then add 3 x 640GB drives (WD Black Caviar). Stripe two, even if you partition it as 400GB each. http://www.barefeats.com/nehal04.html
And keep the boot drive to OS and applications primarily.

i only have 500 photos in my camera roll but when I connect my iPhone 6 to iTunes it says that i have over 3000 items for the photo category.
i originally had around 2000 when I first noticed the issue but since then I have deleted many photos and videos and the results have still not changed

    Hello Ben,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iTunes is indicating that you have more pictures than you really do. You can use the steps under "If your device gets stuck during startup" in the following article. It doesn't mention the issue you are describing, but other users reporting the same thing have reported success using these steps.

Yeah! Problem solved: It's a QT issue.

  • Too Many Photos? Pages not publishing....

I have about 120 photos that I imported from iPhoto to iWeb. When I attempted to publish the site it fails. I need all the photos, what can be done?
Mac Book Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Give a try at publishing to a folder on the desktop to see if all pages will publish. If they do then you know it's an issue with access to the iDisk.
As a work around (if the publish to folder works) you could copy of contents of the folder you published to to the iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb folder and get them published that way until you can get it organized.
Another way might be to separate each page into a separate domain.sites file with iWebSites and then link them manually with a text based navagation bar at the top. This way you can edit one page at a time and publish only that page.
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Too many photos in catalog ??

    Greetings Everyone,
I've been using LR3 since Beta 1.(no previous LR experience).  I transferred about 11000 photos from PSE 3 to LR3.  Did lots of processing, keywording etc and whittled the total to about 8300.  I really liked the process and enjoyed the new access I had to my photos.  Next step was to hook up my archives of about 50,000 photos backed up on an external HD.  Initailly all went well, but after about 10 sessions of deleting duplicates and adding keywords, the program got stuck on a selection of about 20 photos and attempts to move away resulted in a microsoft window stating that there was a problem and LR3 had to shut down.  I couldn't get past this, so I called Adobe Help.  The tech wasn't very helpful.  She said the max number of phots in a catalog was 10,000.  I had exceeded this and overloaded the system.  She helped me create a new catalog containing my original 8300 and told me to generate new cats for the remaining 50K, 10k per cat.  The new cat with my 8300 did not have the keywording that I spent many hours creating.
I was able to go thru my back ups and retreive a backup made before adding the archived 50k that did contain my 8300 plus keyworded phots.  Now what I'd like to do clean up my list of catalogs.  Can I do this without destroying LR3 ability to access my 8300?
How do I breakup my 50k archives into 10K chunks?  And do I really have to do this, I thought I read that LR3 could handle 1M photos.
I really do like the program, but the lack of even a guide book is irksome.  I have alot of trouble getting the info I want off the net.  I am the book reader type.  Love to thumb thru the pages and index and make marks all over the pages I want to use for a project.  Anyone found a book tha't's wriiten as intuitively as the program works.  I generally don't care for Kelby's style.
I know this is quite a bit for any question, never mind a first one, but any and all help is appreciated.  Thank you all who have the time to respond,  Hanic

This is a total piece of misinformation provided by Adobe Tech Support. There are many people with catalogs over 10,000 images. In fact, there are people with catalogs over 500,000 images working properly. Please read this thread. Please optimize your catalog regularly to improve the speed.
How do I breakup my 50k archives into 10K chunks?
Simple. Don't do it at all

There are many books, and I agree, I don't like Kelby either. My preference is for Martin Evening's book.

  • I need help!  I installed icloud on my computer, uploaded photos, my computer crashed and now my ipad runs slow b/c there are too many photos.  Is there a way to delete photos from my ipad (right now, I can click on the photos but not delete)?

What options do I have?  Will purchasing more storage help?  Can I change control from my PC to my ipad if I can't use my computer anymore?

You can import your photos and videos in the Camera Roll on your iPad to your work computer using you usb cable, then delete them from your iPad by following the directions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  If you also have photo stream photos that are not in your camera roll that you want to save, save them to your camera roll so they can be imported too.  To do this, open your My Photo Stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  After importing them you can delete them from your iPad if you want by tapping Edit again, tapping the photos, then tapping Delete.
Once they are on your work computer, you can transfer them to a USB memory stick if you cannot leave them there.
Any photos on your iPad that were synced from your computer can be salvaged by using an app like PhotoSync to transfer them to your work computer over wifi.  (They can't be saved to the camera roll and imported with your usb cable like photos in the camera roll.)  Deleting these photos from your iPad will require using iTunes.  Once you have your own computer again and can install iTunes, you can delete these remaining photos by creating an empty folder on your computer, then selecting this folder to sync to your iPad on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.

  • Do we have too many photos in iphoto 6?

After last roll was downloaded from digital camera (91photos) We have total of 3300 +. Which if you print six to a page its 539 pages. When we select multiple photos get a text message with iphoto camera on left saying document page not loaded. So will not print. The only way I have found to get around it is to click on Library photos which shows the very first photos on the screen then go to advanced options and select a page number to print six pictures. Tried even with photos I had printed before by doing he same thing. Everything was working fine before that last roll was downloaded.

    tap:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you trying to select and print 6 photos or more photos at 6 per page? Can you describe the workflow you're using to select the photos, bring up iPhoto's print window, select the paper size and other options?
