Why is Pfile not in RMAN - backup

RMAN backups spfile together with controlfile. Why doesn't it support backing up pfile? Is is possible to configure it as to backup pfile too?
Thx.

pfiles are obsolete, and you should stop using them.Incorrect ,obsolete means not usable but one can use it and one using it,you can say its not recommended,on the basis of human readable pfile you created spfile .
Before spfile , pfile commented parameter mess the DBA when and what for used this parameter ,though DBA used comments by providing date and if it happens to change 20 times then he has to make comments 20 times ,with the invent of spfile you can save yours own pfile with dated version within filename i.e (initORCL15042008.ora) and then create the spfile from this pfile ,now you can maitnin yours pfile history easily as before.You can track when and what was changed.You can revert back to yours current instance as old one by creating spfile from oldpfile.
To OP
spfile is for single source of server parameters which is fact, thats why RMAN take spfile backup rather pfile.
You can also change some dynamic parameter during instance working ,you can change it in the spfile as well within instance memory.

    i just bought more icloud storage, why does it not let me backup my iPhone 5..says i need 1.4 GB of space?..I just bought 10 more in icloud.

    I think you are confused. Syncing apps and music to your phone will not get store in the cloud by adding more cloud storage. If you don't have enough space to sync the music and apps, buying cloud storage won't help. If you have a 16GB phone, the phone still only has 16GB for apps and music even if you buy 10 mor GB of cloud storage.

  • Why can I not browse other backups in Time Manager

    Hi
    I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post but I could not find a Community for Time Manager.
    I'm trying to restore a file from a Time Machine backup of my Late 2008 MacBook on to a Late 2014 Mac Mini  both running Yosemite. The backup I'm trying to access is on a 3Tbyte Time Capsule which is shared by both machines plus another MacBook Air.
    When I go into Time Machine and select Browse Other Backups I can see the backups for all 3 machines but when I select the backup for the MacBook  but all that is ever displayed in to "Star Wars" display is the current view for the Mac Mini.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    I would appreciate some help.
    Many Thanks

    Thanks again Linc
    I have used Time Machine to restore files and emails previously on my MacBook from its own backups. In this case I am trying to restore a file on to a Mac Mini from the backups of the MacBook. I understood from the Pondini FAQ #17 http://pondini.org/TM/17.html that the way to do this is :- on my Mac Mini right click on the Time Manager icon in the menu bar, hold down the Alt/Option key and select "Browse Other Backup Disks...". This displays a list of backups available from which I select the MacBook's backups and then click "Use Selected Disk". This takes me into the Star Wars array. However the only data that is displayed when I do this is the current view of the files on my Mac Mini. It doesn't open the backups for the MacBook to allow me to select the required file.
    I'm obviously missing something along the line and really appreciate your interest.

  • HT1414 why I can not find my backup on the icloud

    hello anyone helping me

    How are you looking?
    Does in show in Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup?

  • Why can I not place backup folders in another folder on the same hard drive.

    Why can I not move the backup contents of a customer into another folder on the same hard drive without it copiying the information over imediately instead of taking hours and having to use password!!!

    Because the backups are not "owned" by you, so you can't just move them.
    Also, I don't imagine Time Machine will be able to find them if you just move them.
    Take a look at Pondini's Time Machine FAQ #18: http://www.pondini.org/TM/18.html

  • Create a database from 8i RMAN backup

    Hi,
    I am in need to recover some historic data from a historic database's RMAN backup.
    The situation is ... I have one old RMAN backup of a 8i database which includes datafiles, archivellog files and control files. Init.ora file is also available.
    I have installed the 8i software in a host and created the oracle service through ORADIM and pwd file through ORAPWD utility. Then copied the init.ora file under 'C:\Oracle\ADMIN\ORCL\PFILE' and the RMAN backup files under 'C:\Oracle\Ora81\DATABASE' folder.
    Now I can start the instance with the init.ora file but can not mount as control files are not there. when I try to restore the control files through RMAN as...
    RMAN> run
    2> {
    3> restore controlfile;
    4> }
    RMAN-03022: compiling command: restore

    RMAN>
    Now without the catalog database how can I restore the control files and the database from the RMAN backup?
    I think the old RMAN metadata was stored in catalog database.
    Any suggestion please?
    regards

    Sorry I wrongly said that I do not have the DBID, I have DBID but I have controlfile backup as RMAN backupset, not in Binary. So even if I set DBID, RMAN asks for the catalog database, which is not available.

  • Restoring RMAN backup on a different server

    Hi oracle gurus
    i have following scenario
    i have a compressed backup set of a database
    i want to restore that rman backup on to a different server.
    both the server have same version of oracle.and both the server are of 32 bit.
    please reply if any more info is required.

    RESTORE AND RECOVERY PROCEDURE OF PRODUCTION DATABASE BACKUP ON TEST SERVERS
    As part of disaster recovery exercise or to test the validity of a RMAN backup, a full restore and recovery of databases can be performed on scratch or test servers utilising the production RMAN backups which have been restored from the tape backups on these test or scratch servers.
    This note will illustrate the above procedure by detailing the steps required to restore the backup of a production database (prod1) on a test server linux01 .
    The following assumptions are made in this note:
    The RMAN backups have been restored from tape backups to the same backup location on the test server as the production server where the backup was originally taken
    The identical directory structure as is present on production has been created on the test server. This will apply to not only the location of the database files (data, control files, redo log files), but also to the bdump,cdump, udump and adump locations.
    Controlfile autobackup has been enabled. This is important.
    Overview
    Restore the spfile from the autobackup
    Restore the controlfile from the autobackup
    Restore the data files
    Recover by applying archived redo log files
    Open the database with resetlogs
    Restore the SPFILE
    [oracle@linux01 prod1]$ rman target /
    connected to target database (not started)
    RMAN> set dbid=4266928631
    executing command: SET DBID
    RMAN> startup force nomount;
    startup failed: ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
    LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/dbs/initprod1.ora'
    starting Oracle instance without parameter file for retrival of spfile
    Oracle instance started
    Total System Global Area 159383552 bytes
    Fixed Size 2039056 bytes
    Variable Size 67109616 bytes
    Database Buffers 83886080 bytes
    Redo Buffers 6348800 bytes
    RMAN> run
    2> {SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/u02/backup/prod1/%F';
    3> restore spfile from autobackup;
    4> }
    RMAN> shutdown immediate;
    Restore the Control File
    In this case, the instance is now being started with the restored spfile. We can create a pfile as well from this spfile is so required.
    RMAN> startup nomount
    connected to target database (not started)
    Oracle instance started
    RMAN> set dbid=4266928631
    executing command: SET DBID
    RMAN> run
    2> {SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/u02/backup/prod1/%F';
    3> restore controlfile from autobackup;
    4> }
    RMAN> alter database mount;
    database mounted
    released channel: ORA_DISK_1
    Restore the database
    RMAN> restore database;
    Recover the database
    The recovery will fail at a point where it cannot restore any more archived redo log files.
    In this case the last archived log file which has been backed up is sequence 613.
    This information can be obtained by issuing a LIST BACKUP OF ARCHIVELOG ALL command.
    So RMAN will fail when it tries to apply sequence 614 ….
    RMAN> recover database
    [oracle@linux01 PROD1]$ rman target /
    connected to target database: PROD1 (DBID=4266928631, not open)
    RMAN> sql 'alter database open resetlogs';
    RMAN>

  • Error when doing a rman backup

    hi Experts;
    I'm tryin to create a backup, with rman.
    This is a DB oracle 10g, rac, with ASM. We have 2 nodes.
    The DB is in archive mode.
    When I execute rman, following the next procedure:
    export ORACLE_HOME=<path>
    export ORACLE_SID=DBSID
    rman
    connect target /
    I get this message:
    connected to target database (not started)
    However, DB is up and running and I can connect thru sqlplus an SQLDeveloper.
    What steps I should follow in order to complete the backup?
    Regards
    ANG

    Since this is a 2 nodes RAC DD, which wouldbe the process:
    srvctl stop database -d dbname
    srvctl start instance -d dbname -i instancename -o mount
    To do this in one node? the other node remains down.Of course you can shutdown any node if you wish, still you can take backup from active database/ open mode database.
    I need to shutdown the DB, and the restart it?At least one instance should be UP and you have to connect only that node. In specific to RAC environment if you use TNS service , it can connect any one node according to load balance/active instances, why can't you use service. Also post
    $ srvctl status database -d <db_unique_name>
    But my doutb is, if the DB is in archive mode, why I can not do the backup without any problem?Here problem is not with backup, it's problem with connectivity.
    If it's no archivelog mode then you can backup only in mount status.

    The cause is simple, the database has not been shutdown cleanly. You will require to restart the database and shutdown again, if in a RAC you will have to shutdown all instances cleanly.
    Disabing archive log and attempting to backup the database will demonstrate the cause.

    This is simply because we issue a shutdown abort on the instance. However, just preforming a recovery will allow you to backup as required.

  • Bridge does not make a backup copy

    Evening
    I was about to do a backup of my images and while I was looking at them, that although I had selected Bridge to make a backup copy and specified a directory it do not do that.
    I have run many trials trying to get it to write a backup but it does't
    When I start the download from my CF card I set the paramaters and options which in this case is simply rename to shot date and make a backup copy.
    The progress window says it is copying the image it then switches to say it is making a backup copy. But yet that backup copy never appears.
    I managed to get a bunch of screen snapshots and it appears Bridge is making a copy but it is simply writing it to the primary directory, same as the first copy so it is merely overwriting itself. I know this because when it says making Backup Copy it shows the destination directory which is the same as the first copy. I check the directory I specified for the backup and it says D:\images\raw but still puts them in C:\-----
    Any ideas why Bridge is not placing a backup copy where I want it?
    Using CS3

    Check your email.
    I was hoping to learn something here.
    I suspect that it does not matter whether IBA runs on a desktop or a laptop, but I don't know everything, and I was hoping that you might know something I don't and might be willing to share it. But, apparently not.
    You're not capable of knowing if you are using a desktop or laptop?
    That's a rather insulting question, don't you think? Instead of asking leading questions, why don't you just simply say "well, if it's a laptop, the problem might this whereas, if it's a desktop, the problem might be that"?
    At any rate, my take on the situation is that it doesn't matter whether it's a laptop or a desktop. If you disagree, I'd love to hear why it might matter, and I'll be happy to stand corrected.
    Michi.
