Why is Photoshop printing transparent backgrounds ?

I have this problem only with CS4 Photoshop, I have a OKI C711WT (CMYW) and for some reason when an image (CMYK) has a transparent background, PS will print it with a solid black or white, I have to take my .psd AS IS and print it on CorelDraw on the very same machine where the transparency doesn't print, I have tried GIMP and that also prints correctly.
Is there any strange setting I am missing for printing with white ink with transparencies ?

It could be that you specified bad settings either in Photoshop or the printer driver -- both have color controls.
(or on some printers, even settings from the printer console)
Without you telling us exactly what settings you used, we don't know.

  • Transparent Background from Photoshop Prints with Background in InDesign

I created a picture in Photoshop with a transparent background.   I saved it as a PDF to hold the transparency and then placed it into an InDesign file that has a blue background.   On screen it looks fine, but when I print it there is a darker blue box around the picture.   Obviously I am looking for the plain blue to show through behind the picture and not the box surrounding it.  How do I remove that?  Thanks for the help.

Since it depends on how the equipment handles the processing of continuous tone and linework theres no single answer to that. Newer equipment seems to be getting away from the "dual-level" processing (I haven't seen this problem on output in a few years, but that doesn't mean it isn't still out there in some shops).
If the printer can handle the live transparency, that's a good sign, and you should send a PDF that is not flattened.

  • Why can't make transparent background

i have a png image whit a blue background
if i select the background and press CANC photoshop ask me how i want to fill it, colour BG colour etc...
why i can't just delete the BG and make it transparent?
and another thing, when you have the 2 colour selection (on the left side) the white and the black square, is there a way to make the bottom square transparent? (i suppose is the grey square with a red line in it)

You can. First you need to convert the background layer to a normal layer for the Photoshop "Background" layer does not support transparency. Then select the white  area and delete it.
    Save as a png.

  • Importing a graphic with transparent background

I have a graphic that has a transparent background in Photoshop. When I import it into Indesign, it has a white background. Is there a way to keep the transparent background when importing?

A quick test shows it works perfectly for me. Created a regular Photoshop document, transparent background, some text on an otherwise empty layer. Saved as PSD. Placed into InDesign CS4. Transparency all around.
Did you, by any chance, not use the proper import ("Place") function but used copy-and-paste to get it into InDesign?

  • Add Title w/ Transparent background

Earlier today I learned through the list how to add a title to the entire length of a movie.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to have this title (URL actually) added without a background to the title (transparent background so all your that shows up on the screen are the letters).
I created the text in photoshop (with transparent background) and am experimenting with it.
Several formats have worked fine as long as I'm wanting a background to my text (for a "stripe subtitle" look), but the only format that has worked for getting a transparent background has been .gif
    Am I doing something wrong?
The .gif hasn't been very clear, so I'm hoping that another format will work.
    Any hints would be appreciated.
    Luke

Make your file in .png format.
Set the dimensions as close as possible to what will be used in your video so you'll only need to position it in the Movie Properties window.
Set an "alpha" channel for the background color and don't "anti-alias" the text portion to help reduce "jaggies".
Open this file with QuickTime Pro and copy it. Make a selection on your video (in and out points) and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" (Edit menu).
Open the Movie Properties window, highlight the new Video track and click the Visual Settings tab.
Set the "Offset" to position it over your video. In the lower left of the Visual Settings window is a menu for Transparency. Choose "Straight Alpha" and use Save As to complete your file.
The .gif format is not the right choice because it is only 8 bit color.
I used text tracks and QuickTime Pro version 6 in most of my videos. It allows me to set transparency colors where version 7 has left them out:

  • Want to create an oval vignette in photoshop elements 10 with transparent background for printing w

I am fairly new to PSE and I want to create an oval vignette in Photoshop Elements 10 with transparent background for printing on white paper using MS Publisher. Using the white background on inverse selection makes a slight line impression and either it should have a defined "frame" or nothing.
    Appreciate any guidance.

Try with the Elliptical marquee tool:
On the tool's option bar set feather 25-40 px (experiment)
Drag out the Ellipse to embrace the object
Go to Layer>new>layer via copy, or CTRL+J
Your selection should fade out as a vignette and be surrounded by transparency
Save this layer via File>save for web, select PNG-24, and tick "Transparency"

  • Photoshop-how to print white letters on transparent background

I would like to print white letters on a transparent background.  The color white is selected, but it doesn't print print.  I have a logo with a circle and the letters are inside.  I have tried this in both photoshop and photoshop elements.
Originally, I wanted a white circle with black letters.  The black letters print, but not the circle.  The circle is filled with pure white.  Then I tried the inverse and the black letters printed and not the white circle.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

One thing more, in the event that you are considering offset lithography, the lithographer, on occasion, is asked to print white ink on colored paper stock. In that case, since a single litho ink film is only 1 to 2 microns in thickness, it usually takes two or more overprints of white to hide the paper color. Moreover, when a simulated white panel is requested  on white coated stock, it is not unusual to print the panel in gloss or dull varnish so that the difference in shine creates the panel.

  • Printing white on transparent backgrounds-shapes and letters

Why on transparent backgrounds do white shapes or letters not print white?  I have a circle and wanted white circle with black letters.  I even tried a black circle with white letters, but the letters printed transparent.  I need to know how to properly use white.  I have tried in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop.  thanks.

To add to this -  In photoshop when printing is normally cmyk which would mean to have white is the lack of all four colors hence transparent.
Normally to print white with a service for example, you would use the pantone color white, this would tell the service to use the ink white when printing the greyscale image. With pantone, each color would get it own greyscale image from opaque color to transparent. The printer would then print each color one at a time on same piece of paper. When the greyscales are combined you get a blended color image. Since this is usually quite expensive, only a few colors are used during this process.
Whereas cmyk printers can have all four colors in the printer making it a fairly cheap alternative. Where white would be the paper hence the transparency again.
As for private printers that can print white, I never used one and therefore must let someone else explain how those work.

  • Saving photoshop file as pdf but transparent background turns white

Am trying to save file created as photoshop file (which has transparent background) as pdf to send to printer but when I reopen the saved pdf file it appears to be on a white background? Can anybody help please?

What are you "reopening" it with?
"Photoshop PDF" is not enough information. The PDF options window has various settings for PDF versions - Acorbat 4, Acrobat 5, Acrobat 6, etc. Actobat 4 will not include transparency or layers. Acrobat 5 will include layers but not transparency, Acorbat 6 will include both layers and transparency.

  • Photoshop to Illustrator: background not transparent

    Hello everyone,
Can someone tell me why this happens and how to fix or get around or tell me the proper method?  When transferring from Photoshop to Illustrator by copy/paste or directly dragging an image, object, etc., the background in not transparent.  My workaround is to save as .psd and place in Illustrator, which is a pain.  I thought there was "seamless" integration.
    Thanks a bunch,

I am currently trying to create an .svg using Photoshop .psd file (with layers in tact).  I'm new to these products so it may be obvious to others that the above intention was to eventually place the .svg in some sort of website creation software such as Muse.  Which is precisely what I am attempting. However, I am getting a white background once I place or copy and paste into Muse.  My starting .psd has a transparent background without any hidden layers causing this problem.  To test this I placed the .psd file into Muse and it still has a transparent background.  However when opening or placing this file into illustrator, it picks up a white background. If I do exactly as described above, I still get the same result.  So far I have tried:
    1) Simple copy and paste from Photoshop .svg to illustrator to Muse.  Result - white background.
    2) Placing the .psd in illustrator, then placing the .svg file in muse.  Result - white background.
    4) I have also tried the every combination of 1 and 2. - Result - white background.
    3) I have now created a path in Photoshop from the text layer to yet again attempt the above methods.  Result - white background.
I'm including an image of the object I am trying to place with transparent background, but I have both a flattened rasterized version, a version complete with layers and a third (.svg) with the corresponding objects.  I am completely new to Illustrator as of today so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Photoshop Image with transparent background - exporting gives me a white background ?

    Hi,
OK, hours of my life have gone into this one already - I guess that's computers!  I have some images in Photoshop which already have transparent backgrounds, however when I try and drag these into a different program, they move across with a white box as their background.  I have tried saving as TIF, GIFF ... - all sorts, so I am clearly missing a pretty fundamental step that I can't see.
Any help would be SO appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Doreen.

Save as PSD or PNG, depending on whether you final output will be print or web. Then use Place instead of dragging the image over.

  • Photoshop images with transparent background

Hello all! I've searched for this topic in previous threads, but was unsuccessful. Therefore I'll ask the question again:
If I create a Photoshop image with a transparent background, why does it import into iWeb with a WHITE background? Is there a setting in iWeb where I can drag and drop images and not have a white background on the image? Thanks so much in advance!

    Hi There,
The most likely candidate here is that the file format you're using doesn't support transparency. Try saving the Photoshop file in a different format such as PNG or GIF which support transparency.
    Hope this helps

  • Transparent background, but not transparent on print.

I have a Photoshop file with a transparent background and when I place it on the Illustrator against a colored background, it's still transparent on the screen, but when I print it, the transparent part comes out slightly white. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Slide yourRaster/Vector balance slider to raster, then Illustrator will raster all the colors, therefore areas with  and without transparency transparency will have the same color.
Print>>Advanced>>Custom button>>Slide to raster>>(optional: change dpi to 600 if you want better qulaity but may print slower)
