Hi. I was just doing some basic stuff like masking and what not. and suddenly my system tells me i've used up all of my main drive's space (I had about 10GB free). I am curious as to what is taking up this space and how to I clear it. And also can i shift it to my other drive which has 700GB free.

You mean you have a miserly 10 GB of available drive space on your boot drive? ?? !
If that's what you're saying you are indeed in a heap of trouble! Those 10 GB will have to be shared by both the swap files of the OS and Photoshop scratch files. That is insane. Whenever any hard drive gets to be over 80% full, you are already in trouble.
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space for Photoshop alone says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open. I have seen the Photoshop scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS. I also have 16 GB of RAM installed and I'll be increasing it to 32 GB by the end of this year.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

using the ituens icon on my ipad I am trying to see what I have purchased and maybe download a film or album from my purchased items to watch or listen to again. The circle just sits there going round all the time regardless of what router I'm plugged up to on wifi.
Its like something is running really slowly. I can go to stroe and apps store ok. its just the purchases screen is taking for ever.
I can't be the only one with this problem and I certainly don't have a huge library by any standards.

I have this same exact issue, however only with music. It happens when files are added in anyway: dragged, automatically added, opened from safari.
I have Mountain Lion, a new MacBook Pro with Retina, and iTunes Match turned on. I have a feeling iTunes is trying to match/upload the songs first. I've just added 10 songs, iTunes said they were copied over but they don't show up in my library but I can see the cloud icon "working".
EDIT: That's not the reason, the songs finally showed up but they are still waiting to be matched.

I do not have many messages but my iphone 5s says messages take up 4.6GB of space. When comparing with friends who have many more message, less than 1 GB is being used on their phones. Why are mine taking up so much space and how do I correct that?

I do not have that many messages on my new iPhone 5s (maybe about 15 conversations and only one or two going back a little ways) yet when I go to Settings, Usage it shows that my messages are taking up 4.6GB of space. When comparing with others (some who have hundeds of messages) they are using under 1GB for their messages. Why are mine taking up so much space??

I found a post with this solution that worked for me - .Do a backup, then download ibackupbot. It lets you look into the contents of that backup. Look in system files>mediadomain>library>sms>attachments. I found a ton of huge files related to long deleted texts. ibackupbot let me delete all that old crap. I then restored the phone with that now modifec backup and Bingo! freed up 9 GB. No problems.
But note, if you are not technically inclined you probaly don't want to be digging around and deleting back up files. You delete the wrong thing and you could jack up your phone badly. Be careful.

I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
Really annoying.

In Program U should follow the rules:
U'd better data a variant typed the function parameters's type.
for example:
in your program the parameter: stlal = '1'
U'd better like follow:
Data l_stlal type STKO-STLAL

in this way U may have less mistake
and the parameter MTNRV

Partially extracted .zip file taking up valuable disc space

Hello people.
I recently tried extracting a ~500mb .zip file using the standard Bomarchiver, and unfortunately for me the extracted file was turning out to be much bigger than I anticipated. As a result I started running out of disc space as the file was being extracted, and cancelling the action did not appear to work so I killed the process.
Alas I have not regained the disc space I lost initially, and it seems to still be occupied by a partially extracted file somewhere on the drive. The original .zip was on the desktop, yet there is no sign of a .part file anywhere.
Is there a specific location that partial extracts are stored? How can I regain the lost disc space?
I am running 10.4.11 on an old Wallstreet G3 Powerbook, and its limitation of an 8gb boot partition is causing me headaches!

Hello, see if you can't Trash a couple of Big 4 MB sized files, your in dangerous Territory, with the OS near or at self destruction, & Empty the Trash.
If not at least try a Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), that should at least clear up some caches.
If you can get a little breathing room...

Iphot and Photos libraries taking all my disc space

I have installed Photos but now seem to have 2 photo libraries on my Laptop - iPhoto and photos. Seeing as I have a small SSD and a large collection of pictures can I safely delete one library to recover some disc space?

If you migrated the iPhoto Library to Photos, then it should not be using any more space than before, even though it may appear to be. Look at your disk space used and compare it to what you had before. As long as you don't do anything to break the links between the 2 libraries, then they shouldn't take up extra space.

Why is Preview taking up so much space on my hard drive when saving changes to a PDF file?

I am working with a large PDF file (3.3GB) in Preview and am highlighting and adding notes to the contents. Every so often, Preview auto-saves the document, but while it's doing that it takes up a HUGE amount of space on my harddrive! Last time it tried, I went from having 4GB of space to 800MB and recieved a message saying I was almost out of disk space so I force closed the file. I am also pretty sure that I had closer to 15GB of space before I started using this file and since then it has dropped to only 3.3GB. Is there some sort of Preview cache? If so, how do I delete it?
I've tried searching my harddrive for large files and didn't find anything larger than 1GB that I didn't recognize.

Why does photoshop shutdown after I have retouched a few images using the plug in portraiture?

When using portraiture in photoshop 2014, photoshop will stop unexpectedly after using portraiture on a couple of images.
Happens every time. I have updated photoshop and portraiture.

Problem with spaces in filenames when using ODI tools

Hi everyone,
has anyone of you ever encountered the following behaviour:
When using any ODI tool related to file manipulation the tool does not work if the file parameter value contains a blank/space. Example:
OdiFileDelete "-DIR=c:temp" "-FILE=Test this.txt" "-RECURSE=NO" "-CASESENS=NO" "-NOFILE_ERROR=YES"
In this case an error will occur saying the file does not exist although it exists in the directory.
Has anyone a workaround for this?

We decided to rename the files to make the tools work. Definitely not always applicable but in our case it's possible. Any hint why the behaviour is designed like this?

Photoshop hangs for nearly 15 seconds when using Layer > Group Layers or Layer Palette > Group from Layers commands. NOT on creating new group and creating layers and drag-n-dropping layers into group manually in Layer Palette. Got a UI design file with nearly 800 layers and lot of groups. This doesn't occur in smaller files. Using OS X Mavericks, Photoshop CC 2014.2.2, Mid 2014 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro.
I understand that the solution would be just to cut the file into smaller files and design each UI view in a separate file but that would be painful. And it does not seem to be a very hard task to just group layers.

Does the document also have a lot of layer comps?
And can you post that document or send me a copy of it so we can see exactly why it is hanging?

Do iPhone Apps consume more space over time?

Recently my wife's 16GB iPhone4 ran out of capacity. I spent an evening removing 5.5GB of Apps via iTunes (even though when I added up each individual App size, it should have been 500MB max). It took many attempts because iTunes kept encountering errors with specific Apps, which seemed to resolve themselves eventually - but took ages.
I have a 32GB iPhone4 myself, and noticed that I too appear to have 6GB of Apps - so I decided perhaps I should clean up my phone too - and perhaps the only reason I hadn't already run out of space too was that I had the extra 16GB.... However, before I started on that, I thought I'd better check with you good folk if there is any reason Apps would take up so much space?
I was wondering whether any iPhone Apps will start off as 20MB for example for the basic App, but then start storing content, rapidly increasing in size?
Does anyone have any suggestions for me at all?

You're right, apps can accumulate data. Some more than others. I had this same problem and eventually realized that my Vimeo app alone was sitting on an almost 3-gig cache. Luckily, the Vimeo app has a "Clear Cache" button in the settings (it will clear all your Vimeo editing projects, so make sure they're done and saved). Other apps do not.
So that's the first group of suspects you should look at: Video editing apps, such as iMovie, Vimeo, Splice, etc. Go in and clear out your old projects. Next, check any Video and Still Camera apps that store the pics/footage within the app rather than to the camera roll. Camera+, Filmic Pro, Super8 are a few ballooning apps that I have to keep tabs on.
Those are probably your biggest offenders right there. I would look at the kinds of apps you use and try to figure out which ones are likely to accumulate data. iBooks, Kobo or Kindle might be jammed full of colour books and PDFs you don't need to carry around. Any PDF readers you might have, worth a peek. Evernote doesn't store notes locally, but it does store thumbnails I think. Those shouldn't take too much space.
What I'm trying to find is some way to see which app is taking up how much space on the iPhone. It's not enough to look in iTunes and see how much space the app takes up when it's new, we need a way to see how much space an app is taking up NOW
