Why is Premiere Pro CS5 slower on my system than Premiere Pro CS 4?

I just upgraded from Production Premium CS4 to Production Premium CS5.  Have Windows 7, 64 bit OS, 9 GB ram,
Intel I-7 quad 2.67 processors (over clocked to 2.90 ghz) with hyperthreading.  I have nothing of any real substance
operating on my system besides Adobe.  I have just loaded in a ton of DVC PRO HD 60 footage and am editing a 30 minute
program.  Once I am in Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5, it works fairly well, everything works well real time.  However, the moment
I click outside of Premiere Pro like to my desktop, then try to click back into Premier Pro, my screen goes white, Premiere Pro says
"not responding" in the title bar and everything freezes for about a solid minute.  CS 4 did not do this at all.  Anyone know what is happening?
Tks. eddiem

Thank you Harm for the info so far.   I appreciate it.  Seeing that this is an issue, let me give you a little more data than I might normally do in the hopes of helping to resolve this issue and possibly, you will be able to distill from this something of use for all of us.
I tried out what you said to do, clicking in the timeline first or even while the blue wheel is in motion, but it makes very little difference.  Let me give you a little more info.  As an attempt to have resolved this which I have not, I am essentially working offline and the problem still persists.  I have internet connection disabled, I have all anti-virus and firewalls turned off, I have gone through the task manager and have ended every single process not essential to running Premiere Pro CS5.
All it takes is for me to click on the desktop with nothing open and then click back to the Premiere Pro CS5 window whether it be in the timeline or anywhere and I get the blue circle going.  When I do what you say, even while the blue wheel is going, and I try to click on the timeline, the premiere pro window goes white with the blue wheel still going and locks up for at least a minute.
Some other outpoints that may be related to the same issue:
Additionally, when using the media browser and I double click on the P2 media thumbnails to bring the media to the source window, I get a long delay
to load the footage.  Usually about 10-15 seconds for EACH piece just to view it.  Needless to say, this makes editing essentially impossible. I have also tried settings on the memory preferences section changing between "performance" and "memory" not really knowing if that would have anything to do with it, but it didn't.
Another mysterious thing is that my editing tools window never shows up even, even when I reset the editing workspace (window-workspace-reset current workspace (with "editing" bulleted).  I have to manually open up the window and then drag and drop it back to its normal place each time.
Needless to say this is making the experience terrible.
I checked my loaded and running programs to further resolve this to make sure I did not have some unknown system drain, and happened to see I still had the old Production Premium CS 3 installed but not running, so I uninstalled that and it made no difference.  It hadn't been running anyway.
What is frustrating, Harm, is that my Premiere Pro CS4 was running great.  When I started working with P2 media on CS 4 on the same system, I had noticed a similar lag in loading P2 media which I thought was odd, but I NEVER had the delay and blue wheel and white screen clicking from one application to another.  The only time on CS4 I even experience a slow was when I had PPro4, AE4, AME4 and Encore 4 all opened at the same time!
Funny thing though, when I have Premiere Pro CS5 and AE CS 5 opened, AE runs fine, but Premiere seems to be hog and is just slow.  I never have a problem going in and out of the other Production Premium applications.
I am using an Asus computer, with Intel Core i7 processor 920 @ 2.67ghz.  I have standard overclocking software, and when I overclocked my processor to run as an i7-940-2.93 ghz, that lag on the loading the P2 media into the source window went away on CS4.
However, since being on CS5 it now does the same thing.
It is so bad that I thought I okay I will go back to CS 4.  However, now when I try to use CS 4, it is doing the same thing, yet this did not do that before installation of CS5!
Let me give you just one more bit of data in the hopes that it may help in resolving this.  The way I installed Production Premium CS 5 was first via
the trial software.  While that was downloading, I purchased the software and I installed the serial number at the time of installation.  The reason I mention this is that before I purchased it, I was interested in seeing if CS5 would handle a codec problem I was experiencing going from premiere pro to encore DVD ( this will be the subject of another thread) and I was assured by the salesman it would (it didn't) and that the trial software is fully functional!
Well, that is untrue, and the salesmen and the sales supervisors (spoke to them all) are very seriously misinformed.  The Trial version is NOT fully functional, however, you do not find out about it until you actually get the download page and then it clearly says in small print that encore and various HD codecs are not operational as well as some AE aspects on the trial version.
The reason I tell you this is that I don't know if installing via the trial software version makes any difference in how it sets up.
The significance of this is that I was told that Premiere Pro, After Effects and Encore build upon CS4 and you cannot uninstall CS 4 before loading the upgrade to CS5 nor should you uninstall it afterwards.
So this now possibly explains why the previous CS 4 I have on the system is also now responding just like CS5.  (I don't know if it makes any difference, but CS5 installed Premiere Pro, After Effects and Encore in the C:\Window\Programs folder yet all other components are installed in the C:\Windows\Programs(86) folder.  (My dynamic links work fine (so far) between Premiere and AE and Encore)
Okay, Harm, sorry I wrote so much but possibly this will help, and I hope there is something I can do immediately to resolve these serious delay (lag) issues.
PS:  I have three internal hard drives.  CS5 is installed on the C drive same as my OS and all my footage and premiere pro pjts are saved onto a different drive. Everything is 7200 rpm, 1TB,  Sata 3Gb/s..  Except the internal drive where the PrPro Pjts and footage are stored is 2TB , 7200 RPM and 6Gb/s.

  • HT2055 Why does iPhoto crash or slow down my system significantly?

When I use iPhoto to import or work on my photos, it slows the entire system down big time and iPhoto itself continuously shuts down and I have to reopen. Just to import photos it takes several attempts to successfully get them imported to iPhoto. I love iPhoto and what it does but it is killing my system! Help!

What version of iPhoto and system are your running?  How much free space do you have on your boot drive. Post just the first 50 lines of the crash report.

  • Why is running Elements 8 slower on Windows 7 than XP?

I am afraid this is query is a bit long, but I have tried to provide all the
    info I can ....
    THE PROBLEM
My old PC died, so I bought a new PC to improve my video processing speed, and also move off Windows XP.
    - I installed the same copy of Adobe Premiere Elements 8 on both PCs.
    - I applied no updates (on either machine) as the original versions works fine (on XP - why fix something that isn't broken)
    - I changed the preferences to stop background rendering (due to data volumes -
    same on old PC).
    - I then copied the project file (.prel) from the old PC to the new.
Having set up the new PC, I carried out a benchmark test in Premiere Elements 8.0 converting the same 4-hour long HD file from M2TS to MPG on both PCs.
It was 4 times slower on the new PC !!!!
I then tried out another video conversion program (to demux MPG files so that they can be edited in Premiere) and that was 30% faster on the new PC.
In the Premier test the original file was on a 6GB/s 3TB disk drive with the output file on a 6GB/s 2TB drive (which also has the Windows system and Adobe cache files).
    -  Both processes ran identically without errors.  In fact the output files were almost identical (one was 12 685 358 KB, the other 12 658 402 KB). I ran MediaInfo on both output files and it summarised them as identical in terms of codecs, size, etc, etc.
    - On the old PC, CPU utilisation is usually around 90%, on the new one it is closer to 50%.
    - Disk and memory utilisation are not limiting factors.
Can anyone help me finding out why the new PC is so much slower than the old?

    BACKGROUND
I have a very specific use of Premiere (for research purposes):
    - I have 2 HD video Sony XDR160E camcorders monitoring bird nests 13 hours per day.
    - Each camera generates 160 GB data per day on its internal HD.
    - File sizes range from 20 GB (smallest) to 160 GB.
    - I download the files from the camera to disk using the cameras download facility.
It is then that I use Premiere.
    - I open a project that has the exact specs of the camera's output.
    - I open the M2TS file in Premiere, drag it onto the sceneline.
    - I do not view the file but immediately share it using a preset that matches the requirements of my MVIX PVR.
This bit is not relevant to the problem per se, but provides background info:
    - I then copy the file onto the PVR decoder.
    - I view the file through an MVIX PVR which allows viewing at 32x speed with minimal data loss.
    - I will then identify activity periods (which may be only 5 minutes per day).
    - I use the camera's editor to extract the relevant clips keeping all the camera metadata intact.
    - After that I may use Premiere again to create illustrative montages.
    CONCLUSION
Does anyone have a clue as to why I am having this problem? (it is not an error per se)
    - The obvious differences are the operating system, the graphics card and the disk allocation unit size
    - It may well NOT be a Premiere issue, it may be Windows 7 Pro that is causing the problem.
    - I assume that the graphics card is irrelevant as I never actually view the video in Premiere (in this scenario)
    - Could it be that Adobe cannot handle the 64k disk allocation size?
    - Is there some special setting in Windows 7 that I need to enable that wasn't required in Windows XP?
    - Is there some special setting in Adobe that I need to enable when running in a 64-bit environment?
Or is there something else I am missing?
Any help would be really appreciated - it could take weeks to try out all the various combinations to identify the problem.
    Giles

    Steve
Thanx for your insights.  I do not have the disks partitioned (except the system disk, I always like to keep the system files separated from the 'user' files to make backups simpler).
I suspect you are right that upgrading to 11 would speed things up, but I still suspect there is something more fundamentally wrong in my Windows 7 set-up - my guess is that upgrading to 11 might double the speed of processing - but that would still leave it 50% slower than on the old machine.
My first step will be to run all the patches on 8 - but not for a few days. We are expecting 3 or 4 days of thunderstorms (normal for this time of year in South Africa) and my UPS hasn't the battery life to keep going during an upgrade cycle.

  • Why is animation so much slower in 2.2 than 2.1?

I have a pretty gnarly translate/scale animation running on my Mac in jdk 7u7 or jdk 7u10. Javafx 2.2.x doesn't seem to be able to handle it. The animation is choppy and slow. I had the exact same animation in 2.1/jdk 6 on the same computer and it was smooth and fast.
Any reason for this? Is there any way I can tell if GPU is being used?
    Thanks!

I wonder how this performs when you use the setup Java 7 update 5 + JavaFX 2.1 (so only upgrade the JDK, not JavaFX). If only to rule out that the problem actually originates from the JDK update and not JavaFX specifically.

  • Why does Premiere Pro CS5 eat up space on my C drive when it conforms video files?

Hey everyone. I have Premiere Pro CS5 with the latest update installed. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on a 120GB Corsair SSD drive. I have set my scratch disk video and audio previews to a different hard drive (F: drive). I have three questions:
    1. Why does Premiere eat up space on my C drive whenever it conforms the video files I import into my project?
    2. Where on my C drive can I find the folder that holds all these conformed video files that are taking up space on my C drive?
    3. How do I prevent Premiere from eating up space on my hard drive when it conforms the video files I import into my project? Is there some way to move whatever folder is eating up space on my hard drive when Premiere conforms the video files and tell Premiere to conform the video files on another hard disk so I don't lose precious space on my C drive?
Okay, that's four questions but, can some please help me on this? Thanks.
    Okay, that's five questions.

    hello,
i think you need to relocate you media  cache files to a separate drive other than your c: drive.
in the hardware forum, Harm has done a wonderful job at advising on HDD setup, i think it mentions relocation
of swap file, media cache, etc.  all which are defaulted to your c: in your user profile
after relocating to different physical drives (all without partitions) performance usually increases
Generic Guideline for Disk Setup  by harm
hope this helps til someone else answers more
    good luck...

@dominic: I did the safe mode start and after the desktop appeard I did nothing and just shut down and start normally again. Is it that?  I was thinking that some window should have popped out of nowwhere and give me some diagnose... and tell me what to do... ?
Then after a normal start I did the disk utility thing, I could only verify and not repair since it seems to be ok? :
Then I tried the SMC reset according to the link you sent me, not sure if I did it right cause step 4 and 5 under
Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own
were somehow the same, after I released everything I didnt have to press power button separately (step5), the mac started already (after step4)
@Lex: I'm really wondering about those two old applications
    1) I didn't find anything useful about camerawindow or canon tools, except that it helps connecting my canon powershot G15 camera with a smartphone... don't even says if it works with my camera model nor if it works with mavericks...
    2) ...Silverlight/OutOfBrowser/SLLauncher.app: Is it needed for what? After looking up it just said useful for webbrowsers, maybe better video quality etc. isn't that something good? if I delete it from my library will there e noteable differences when I use the internet?
besides that i deleted and update like u suggested and did a check again:

  • Why Does Premiere Pro CS4 Import Only 10 Seconds Of Layered Photoshop CS4 .psd??

Why Does Premiere Pro CS4 Import Only 10 Seconds Of Layered Photoshop CS4 .psd??
I have a 24 second clip I layered in Ps and when I import the psd into Pr THE SEQUENCE IS ALWAYS ONLY 10 SECONDS!
How can I change this?  Why does this happen?  I really need to know as soon as possible.  I have a video project due this Wednesday (granted it's for an AV class where I'm just learning Pr.  But I can learn VERY FAST!)
    Thanks for your help.
    --OSXniCKels

Just in case I wasn't clear in my last line "just Click-drag on the Tail of your .PSD to set the desired Duration," once you have Imported your .PSD (as Footage), just drag it to the Timeline, Click-drag on the right-hand margin (the Tail) and stretch out its Duration, as is required.
Now, if you Imported as a Sequence, open that Sequence's Timeline, and do the same.
I normally will set my Edit>Preferences>Still Duration to about what I think will be applicable, do my Import, and then with the Info Panel handy, just alter the Duration to suit.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

why my macbook pro is running slow ?

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop?  An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac. Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options:  ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck.  You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is.  If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.   If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache. Safari/Empty Cache Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top.  If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance.  Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
Too little ram - max out your ram.

  • Why performance of Illustrator CS6 slower than Illustrator CS5.5?

  • Why my Mac Pro 2009 became too slow after updated Yosemite?

Why my Mac Pro 2009 became too slow after updated Yosemite?

When the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Why is Premiere Pro telling me it will take over 24 hours to export a 55-second clip with no audio or effects?

Why is Premiere Pro telling me it will take over 24 hours to export a 55-second clip with no audio or effects? It's never done this before, but this is driving me nuts. I'm almost finished with this project, I can't have this kind of stuff happening now.

Forgive me. I'm just stressing hardcore at the moment.
    Specs:
    OS X 10.9.4
    2.8 GHz intel
    Premiere 5.5
exporting cell phone video which has been treated with effects and layered with other clips from cell phone video, then nested as one single video clip, now trying to export as H.264 (DV 24fps)
Full disclosure: I am an amateur so if you need more info just tell me and I'll produce it if I can. I should note though, I've done this before with no problem. However the settings may have been different (still getting the hang of the whole 'settings' thing, to be honest). It's very possible that the problem in this case is the operator, in other words.

  • Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow?

Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow? Totally 8 gb speed system but now very slow . Please give some suggestions

Another thing you can do in Lion (and ML) is click on the "Info" button in Disk Utility to get the SMART status of the drive. It's more detailed now than it used to be and it might tell you if something is wrong.
A lot can go wrong with a hard drive which is why I tend to point people to the downloads section of the following web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They have a free hard drive troublleshooting download book there. I reccommend people download that before asking questionis because there are tons of problems that can act like hard drive problems when there's nothing wrong with the system at all. For example, how full is the drive? How many applications are running? What's the status of Spotlight indexing? How many apps are you running? How much memory do you have?
I could probably think up 20 or 30 more if needed.
