Why is quick selection erasing my selection with second click?

I click the selection with my quick selection tool and then when I click again to continue selecting more, the second click starts removing my current selection. I know holding the "option" key removes my selection but I'm not holding down the "option" key. It just starts doing it when I do my second click and then continues removing even if I keep clicking. I just updated Photoshop but that did not help. I have Photoshop CC. Please help.

This is most likely caused by you having clicked the "Subtract from selection" button at some point in time, in the tool settings, see attached picture. If you have no selection when you start using the tool, it will create one, but as soon as there's a selection active the tool will start to Subtract. Every tool in PS remember it's settings! As Pierre suggests, resetting your tool will fix this or just by clicking the "New Selection" button. It can be a pretty good idea to reset your tools the first thing you do every day when starting a new work session to avoid this kind of problems.

Why does Quick Select tool make the edges all jagged?

My Photoshop Elements Quick Select tool is great for selecting an item, a shirt say, and then I copy it and paste it onto a new page with a white background, thus eliminating the background I had before. The only thing is that it makes the edges of the item all jagged and then I have to go with the eraser tool and smooth everything out. This is not easy because my hand is not that steady. Also it is very hard on my eyes. I've already had to get new glasses. The original image, a shirt for example, has sharp delineation all around it. How can I copy it so that when I paste it onto a new background, it stays sharp and I don't have to spend ages, sometimes half an hour or more, trying to smooth out its edges? Thanks.

Thanks for your answer about using Refine Edge. It works very well. Thanks so much. Is there a way that I can get the edge really sharp but not jagged? I've tried Smooth 8 and Feather 0 but the garment still doesn't have as sharp an edge as the original photo.
Many thanks also for your answer to Jane regarding Fill or Unfill Workspace. I couldn't find it even after a laborious task of copying every option screen in my original Photoshop Elements 6 and then comparing each photo to every option screen on my new Photoshop. It never would have occurred to me to look in Application Frame. I, like Jane and others, do not like working with my entire Workspace blacked out.

Why is Quick Selection Tool taking forever on MACBOOK PRO

Just recently my quick selection tool is obnoxiously slow. It's driving me crazy. Nothing has changed on my computer and I optimized my preferences as in another thread regarding this issue but on a windows computer. I'm not sure what's going on but if anyone has an idea as to how to fix this, I'd appreciate it! I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1 on a 15" Macbook Pro Retina

The 'cache needs to be more than 1' thing is kind of strange. It even carries a warning on the dialog box. I can only think that a value of 1 is available for systems that can't use the GPU.

Why can't I Erase system drive with Security Options?

I'm getting ready to return my MacBook Pro and I want to wipe the system drive. I've booted in recovery using cmd+r. I opened Disk Utility, selected the SSD drive and the Erase tab. The Security Options button is grayed out. How do I securely erase the drive?

Why can't I close an application with ONE click???

If I click the little red button with the 'X', why does the action not close the entire application, and why does the application remain active in the dock???????
Isn't there some way (some setting maybe) that I can get a SINGLE click to close an application?

First of all, you close a window, you quit an application. Closing a window and quitting an application are two different operations.
But, if you press command-Q, you will quit the current application and close the windows associated with that application as a result.
The Mac operates in this way to increase speed, minimize RAM usage, and use screen space more efficiently. Re-opening applications takes time, keeping a window open to keep an application going would take more memory, and in Windows, that window would get a button on the taskbar, which would rob screen space from other task buttons.
The Mac is an exercise in speed and efficiency. It is the way it is for a reason. Just because you close an application window doesn't mean you're not going to use that application again in a few seconds. This functionality is more flexible and more oriented towards system performance.

Quick selection in an action

I've just try to implement an action with a quick selection tool seems to get selected (as a tool), but the actual usage of the tool does not get recorded. The idea would be that application of quick selection would be applied to all my photos being processed. Am I doing something wrong or are quick selections not compatible with actions? Can you use quick selections with any other type of automation such as scripting?

Well, I thought photoshop might be able to remember the start location and the stream of movement afterward. The Magicwand, for example, works with actions, and this requires human interaction, albeit, a much simplier interaction (a click).
To explain what I am doing is a bit tricky, but I'll give it a try. I am taking old (100 year old) medium format that have been scanned from glass plates, inverting the image to positive and cropping out the borders from the scan. All the photos have a similar size and position, but not exact. My ultimate goal is to automatically crop out the borders. The magicwand works to some extent for selecting the intertior of the image, but there is some cross over between the border and image, while quick selection does the job almost perfectly. After selecting the interior I would create a new file (which automatically has the bounds of the current selection) and paste.
Any creative ideas would help.

Text entry box with double-click button - is this possible?

I need to produce a simulation in Captivate 3 where the user types in some text, then double-clicks a button to open another window.
With a normal text entry box the button doesn't seem to have the option to respond to a double click.
I can't add in an extra slide with a click box to simulate the double-click as I have icons that change colour with time on the first slide.
Are there any other ways of getting round this?

Thanks for the suggestion. That would work brilliantly normally, just not on this slide, unfortunately.
The reason for this is I have two hint icons on the screen - 1 shows a basic one then the second is a rollover slidelet with a clip of the correct action being performed. The first is on screen for a few seconds, then the second takes over.
The earliest I would be able to set the second click would be around 8 seconds in, to allow the second hint to appear before the text box pauses the slide. So anyone who immediately knew which area to click would have to click once then wait a while to make the second click.
It's annoying that the problem is of my own making by having the 2 icons, but as I've done this through a series of lessons, I can't really change it now.
I might just go ahead with the single click option (unless there's a double-click in C4? [hoping to get this soon!]) and hope that no-one notices that the screen changes a bit too quickly to really have registered the second click.

And your screen shows it is the archaic, totally superseded Photoshop 6.01, and that was in no way associated with any CS (Creative Suite), so your question title indicating you had "cs6.0.1" was massively and annoyingly misleading and wrong.
You must be running an ancient machine if that oldie runs on it.
What's worse you are running an illegal, pirated and hacked version of Photoshop. You are breaking the law.
Please don't come back here until you have bought a legal copy of Photoshop.

Main Objective: How can I change the background behind a bunch of kids? My quick selection tool is quirky! Like the HS kids in the pic….

When I try the quick selection tool, it's all wonky & quirky now. I can't select little bits any more! It just basically takes the whole stinkin' page! What did I do?! Are there defaults?
On watched video number 85 today, I tried to use my stylus and the bamboo pad. (Good grief; that's another story...it moves & I'm not even touching the pad; what's up with that?! Way too confusing, so I gave up!)

This is WAY over my head; but I'm trying. Really.
On a mac with CC membership.

You may find it easier to select the kids than the background. Instead of copying to new layer, create a mask, then you can add or remove as you like.
In the top tool bar click the icon in the middle to add to selection. Then use your option key to remove.
When you are nearing done, you can then refine the mask. If necessary you can use the other selection tool for straight lines, large areas etc. For tight places you may prefer to use the quick mask tool (lowercase q)
Take your time, you will get it. And like I said, using a mask will let you take a breather. It can help walking away for a bit.

Since I first tried Photoshop CS6 on PC I encounter the following problem: when I use quick selection tool at some point the selection gets completely random and I see parts of my artwork disapear. Even after closing the file without saving the changes I see the artwork completely corrupted, without any possibility to recover. As if parts of the image were deleted.
The problem persisted after I changed to Creative Cloud on Mac (I'm running OS X 10.8.5.)
I have just seen that it also happens when I work with regular layer masks.
I desperately need to fix this problem because I cannot keep using hours of retouching work again and again.

I am also having the same exact issue. This is the third time this has happened in about six months. I use the quick selection tool and I see a alpha mask that looks truncated and it show random parts of the image in the mask which has nothing to do with the selection. But the worst part of this is that my retouching layer the only other layer comes back completely empty even if I try to save the file in various other file types like tiff and it comes back empty. I'm losing a lot of retouching time here. I also hope some else has an answer.

Concluding something does not work because you fail at using it is not necessarily always justified.
The Quick Selection Tool certainly has limitations, but your post seems to be more about venting than trouble-shooting – otherwise you might have posted an image where you failed to get an expected result.
