Why is renaming apps bad? What does it do?

Hi all. I've been searching the web and forums all over, but i haven't found a satisfactory answer to this question yet. The best i've found is that the app may not function properly if renamed. Mainly I'm trying to find out if it's ok to rename apps and their folders from say "quicktime player" to "quicktime player 7.6.4" without any detrimental effects. I would like to do this with all my apps ideally - firefox, safari, itunes, divx, etc. It makes it much faster and easier to see what version i'm running.
does anyone know if this is ok to do. What problem, if any, might it cause and why?
Some apps are launched by other apps. For example Quicktime Player is often started by other apps when you ask the other app to play a video clip. Preview is another such app for pictures. Disk Utility when an uninitialized disk is attached to the Mac. Network Utility if there is a network connection problem. Software Update can be invoked via the Apple menu. Terminal when double clicking on a .command file. That is just scratching the surface.
And of course all those Open With settings may stop finding the apps associated with file type.
As mentioned software updates may not find the original app if it has been renamed, its parent directory renamed, or the app has been moved. In one case, the app may not be updated at all, and in another case the new version will be installed in the old location, but you will continue using the old version, then one day you read about a new feature in the app, only the old version does not have the feature, you come back to these forums and complain, contributes to the forum try to help, but you never mention you have renamed/moved things, you get frustrated with the people trying to help you, you accuse them of being Fanboys, you dump Mac OS X and install Windows. All because you renamed/moved installed applications
My general rule is, if the application has an installer, I leave the application where it was installed and do not rename nor move the app. If the application was downloaded via a .dmg file and the installation is just drag and drop from the .dmg, then I store those apps my own /Local/Applications or /Local/Utilities.
If I want to access an app from anywhere else (or use a different name), I create an alias, change the alias name to whatever I want, and put the alias anywhere I want (or use multiple aliases).

The usual explanation is that it is a licensing issue. It's not Apple refusing to support an MS product (they support loads of others, like QuickLook for Office docs). MS won't let Apple have it. (The Linux-based solutions are third-party reverse engineered.)
That having been said, I've never had a problem plugging an NTFS drive and reading files from it. Why does it take you an hour?
I've never had a problem with a Mac-formatted USB thumb drive not writing either. It's possible that the hardware/software that Apple uses is more sensitive to cheaper thumb drives, but I'm guessing here.

It usually means that you may have upgraded the version of OS X to a version with which these apps are incompatible.

I also got this message last night, after already updating an app earlier in the day with no problem. I went to download a new app, and also had an app that needed to be updated. Attempting either of those resulted in the error code 1004.
I have an iPhone 4, running 4.3.5. It is not jailbroken, nor has my laptop been used to do such a thing. I'm not even entirely certain what jailbreaking is, nor do I care. Aside from installing apps, my phone is exactly as it was given to me by Apple 10 months ago.
I have tried resetting, logging out and back in to the Apple store from both my laptop and my phone, rebooting, checked all of those seemingly unrelated settings like my date/time settings (WTH?), turned off wifi, and a couple of other things I can't even remember. Nothing worked.

Hard to say. What problem is causing you to need to force close apps? That may be a clue.

Your advice did not help me. I also installed 10.7.4 combo but the situation is the same.

In your description you say the first document opens as the Title you gave it.
Templates always open as Untitled so it sounds like you have saved a regular document, perhaps into your templates folder which is possible.
Since you have already worked on it and it has been previously saved, Lion will now Save for you and Save a Version is available
The other document does open as Untitled so sounds like a real template and as Peggy has pointed out will not have either Revert nor Save a Version until you Save it and have changed something in it.
This is a classic example of just how Apple's supposedly "simplification" of the process, is leading to confusion of what has happened. That the conditions and resulting actions from those conditions is so convoluted says it all.
It all reminds me of the Monty Python Life of Brian sketch with the "simplified" John Cleese instructions to the class, as to if you have a brother in an older dorm whether to hang your hat and bag on the hooks provided. The trouble is Apple does not get the joke, that it is transforming itself into a frequently self contradictory bumbling bureacracy. The price of unchallenged self appointed geniushood.

What does it take to get an app on the ovi store? There are so many apps available that are not included in the ovi store.... like "s60spoton" It allows you to use your cameras flash as a flash light! I've been wanting this forever. If this app was easily available on the Ovi store, I would have been able to find it easily... but it was linked to me in a forum.

It's the maker of an apps responsibility to get it listed on the store so if it's not on there it's because the maker hasn't put it there.
Nokia cannot put apps on the store without the makers consent.
Only the maker/publisher of an app can tell you why their app isn't on the store. It may be for financial reasons, legal reasons, licensing issues, piracy concerns or they may just have ceased development and moved on.
The ovi store isn't the only source of applications and some developers prefer to use independant sites like www.getjar.com instead.

New apps indicated in iTunes on mac - what does this mean?

I am using iTunes 10.7 on a Mac running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion and sync with my iPad 3 running iOS 6.0.1.
I have 770 apps of which about 500 are ON THE iPAD and another 270 are in the purchased but not on iPad section on the cloud I guess.
All apps are up-to-date.
BUT when I go to to iTunes on my Mac, when I look in the sidebar I see next to Apps a gray oval with the number 107 in it. Now I have a similar gray oval (there is a special name for this "gray oval"…) for other things, like Podcasts or TV Shows. I know the number in those gray ovals means "Unwatched" and it is correct-- any Podcasts which I have downloaded or TV Shows which I have that I HAVE NOT WATCHED are so indicated.
BUT what does the number mean for APPS?? Someone told me it may mean "APPS THAT NEED UPDATES" - but ALL my Apps on my iPad 3are up-to-date and this syncs regularly with my iPad---
So what in the world is this number 107 indicating and how to get rid of it or what action to take to respond to it?

Thanks for the feedback! From your reply I think I may understand this better: I have downloaded 700+ apps and deleted over 200 of them. I show 116 in my iTunes that "have an update available" - but I believe these are all apps that I deleted, so they have NOT been updated on my iPad as they are no longer on the iPad. (But iTunes keeps essentially all versions on my Mac it seems).
OK why not just hit "update" for the 116 apps? Because I have 2 that I downgraded intentionally - and don't want to take the chance that ZITE 1.3.3 or Bloomberg version 1.x are replaced by the (in my opinion) poor upgrades.
I will try to reinstall a few of the "deleted" apps, then see if they have upgrades. If so I will do that and then see if this syncs to iTunes and thereby reduces the number of upgrades-- well indeed I'll look for the specific apps I have re-installed and upgraded! Then I'll report back here.

Why no tleave them spread out I hear you ask... That is not practicable. I then have 12 pages to scan rather than just two. I need a solution... :-P

I realize this is an old thread but I'm having the same problem after upgrading my software today. Kinda surprised there are no solutions at all with 88 views. I have an iPod touch btw, not an iPhone, but it prob wouldn't make much difference in this case.
The thing is, I get the screen(s) looking EXACTLY as I want on iTunes...just perfect (which is what I believe everyone else is experiencing as well). When we go to sync tho, it does whatever it wants to do. After syncing, all the apps are there, it's just that for me, it puts them in some type of random order. I have 72 apps and this is absolutely ridiculous!
