Why is screen turning off randomly?
For some reson or another, My Macbook Pro will be running fine, and depending on my actions (mostly using FCPX or Preview) the screen will shut off and go completely black, not dim cuz I tryied the brightness keys they do nothing. and the keyboard back light stays on so I know that the computer is still on. I don't understand what to do or how to do it. I have already been to an Apple store or a HD replacement I don't want to have to go back but if I do I do. I'm looking for some quick help because this is my school computer and I need to have it running with out bugs and such. Please help thanks in advance.
Thta does not sound like there is any software tweak that will make your screen work properly.
Homework is to reset the PRAM and do an SMC reset.
Then back to the store.

Black screen/turns off random bootcamp windows 7
I have a imac 27" mid 2010 and i am using windows 7 x64 ultimate on bootcamp (3.3 and later 4.0) from snow leopard to lion, i have
recently upgraded my mac with mountain lion.
But after i did upgrade to mountain lion a day later my screen in bootcamp goes black/turns off. I can sometimes hear the sounds when it happens.
The black screen/turn off, is also randomly so its not happening when i do something or opening something. So after a few black-outs i started to get fustrated and i surfed the web for solutions (Option + Alt + P + R), disconnect power cord wait 10 seconds and reconnect, install/uninstall new drivers, reinstalling windows. reinstalling mountain lion and windows but the problem is stil there.
But when using mountain lion i dont have any problems everything works fine.
I think that mountain lion has changed something to the firmware or bios of the system, or changed something to bootcamp?
I really dont know, the only thing i know is i cant use windows as i normally did, and my boss isnt happy when i dont finish my work.
I really need some answers and solutions.
ThanksSame problem occuring for me, although Windows 7 boots fine in safe mode but when booting in regular mode after the lauch screen it goes black and turns off. Funny thing is that mountain lion didn't seem to be the problem for me instead I believe windows updated it's software for me and then it started happening. Im going to try and reformat partition reinstall windows 7.
oh BTW I'm on Macbook Pro x Retina Display. -
IMac screen turns off randomly?
Hello
I'm new to this, so sorry if I haven't posted this in the right place or anything
Basically, my iMac screen just turns off randomly, like once a week. It only happens when I come off sleep/screensaver like 2 minutes after, then I have to press the iMac button
Anyone else have this problem, or know how I can fix it?
Thanks!Hello Heather & welcome to he forums!
You did pretty good for the first time... & this is a pretty friendly place.
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the restart right after that for clues. -
screen goes black, laptop seems to have not turned off but nothing can turn the screen on. seems fine after a reboot but problem recurs at some random future inconvenient point in time. problem is annoyingly inconsistent - it will occur at random (no discoverable software or hardware conjunctions), sometimes around once weekly, sometimes less frequently. have already had it in a mac repair, said they fixed it, something to do with graphics card firmware. not so. same issue. currently in touch with support but in frustratingly slow red tape processes. VERY curious to find if ANYONE has experienced this issue. it seems very unlikely that i am the only macbook pro user on earth that this happens to......i perform live music with this laptop as part of my set-up - and am actively refusing shows at present until this is resolved!!!
thank you very much for your reply.
can you please just clarify exactly what you mean by "replaced my HDD to SSD" - you mean changing your hard drive to the solid state kind? how long ago did you make the change and thus how long now without the issue? was it also happening to you irregularly (it might be a month or two that it won't happen for, and then more frequently...) - many thanks for any info...... -
MBP Screen Turns Off Randomly - Battery Charge/Plugged In...
Two to three times per day for the last several weeks, my 201 Macbook Pro screen will just turn off. If I am using Spotify, the audio will stutter and I'll be forced to hold down the power button and turn it off and on.
Per instructions on this site, I ran the hardware test which said one RAM slot was faulty, bought a new stick, installed it, ran the test again, no more error messages but the problem persists.
Otherwise the computer runs beautifully, no issues whatsoever. I'm running OSX 10.6.8 with 8 GB of RAM.
When it comes back on I get the following panic report:

I've got the same problem, it seems to came from faulty memory slots, not really from faulty memory sticks.
In my case, I'm using a MacBook PRO 15" Intel I7 2,66 ghz from mid 2010 with two sticks of 4go DDR3.
At first I had error messages like yours with reboots and so on ... After some weeks it gets worst : The MacBook wouldn't reboot, it plays 3 beeps with black screen instead of starting normally.
I thought that it came from the memory sticks and replace the two sticks without any result.
Lets call the two memory slot A and B (A the higher and B the lower).
I tried to start the computer with memory stick in A : OK, some error messages and reboot by day, but starting ok.
I tried to start the computer with memory stick in B : Impossible, 3 beeps and the computer wont start.
I Have repeated this test with 4 different memory sticks, the result is always the same, B is no longer working ...
I'm very disappointed, a computer like this that brakes in two years ... I'll go to my Apple Store next week, if you're intrested I'll give you the diagnostic ... and the price of the repair ... -
Why is mac turning off randomly?
My mac (a couple of months old) has been shutting off randomly as of late. It started last night. It just powered down. Is it the battery faulty? Its charging normally. What should I do?

I guess I will just take it to the Apple store. Thanks. -
Hi there,
Thanks in advance for the input.
This is my MBP specifications:
15 Inch mid 2010
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74) (Installed it yesterday, problem keept happening with Snow Leopard)
500 GB SATA HDD
4 GB RAM
It's been happening for quite a while, at first it was just while I was browsing the internet. Then it just happened randomly. The sreen is completely OFF, and if I'm playing music or anything with sound it starts looping, the only way to stop it id by pushing the ON/OFF button until it shuts off, and turn it ON again. When I turn it on it prompts me to file a report and it says the computer had to be shut down because of a problem. I send the report every time, but have no idea if it is a problem with software or hardware. I don't think it is overheating, it just does it randomly, and a few times right away again after restarting.
Please help? I'm afraid this would happen in the middle of my work.
Does anyone else have this problem? How do I know what the real problem is, and how do I solve it?
Thanks a bunch in advance.Welp, that didn't work out either... I put it on deep sleep a couple times, yet the screen goes out while I'm working actively on the computer, no matter what. Just last night, I put it on deep sleep, and it did it again, I woke up in the morning with the ligths of the keyboard on and there was no way of waking it up I even waited the 15-30 secs. for it to do, and didn't come back to life. Shut it down with the power button, turned it on again, prompted me to file the report, once again I did, and the creen went off two other times already since then. One of them while I was switching between chat conversations on skype (not on video calls or anything). This is getting scary.
I found a couple threads here that were close to my problem, although my MBP has a different video card, I'll give this a try, just in case. I already contacted a technician that'll take a look at it, since I'm not in the US and access to an apple store here is nearly impossible, that and the 1 year warranty is gone already.
This seems to help in other cases:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
This seemed to be the issue for other MBP's manufactured in 2007-8

Wish me luck and other options please?! -
Why does my Satellite C655D-S5300 turn off randomly after about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours
Was wondering why my laptop turns off randomly for no reason. It does this even if no battery is connected and the AC adapter is connected. It starts right up again if I press the power button but only lasts for an hour or so then shuts down again? When it starts I do hear the fan going and the system works just fine until it randomly shuts down. Upon restarting the usual windows error indicated improper shut down happened. Could it be a bios problem or a virus?
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi Peter,
Well, I finally gave up and took it into a professional repair place who simply updated the BIOS and that solved the problem. Runs like a champ now. I should have checked that before taking it in...would have been a quick fix and saved
$100. Oh well, thanks for the reply.

My macbook turns off randomly but not completely because when I tap the touchpad it goes to the password screen and I am back to it in seconds. It's really annoying. HELP!!!
1. Non volatile random access memory (NVRAM) is where the computer stores user's settings, like time and date, speaker volume, energy saver settings etc.
2. Reseting NVRAM has no impact on anything on your hard drive, or anything else on the computer.
See this note from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 -
My screen shuts off randomly
at least twice a day.
This is what I get after force quit my laptop and turn on.
I went to apple store and they said just to open up and check what is wrong cost $300~350
and to fix this problem and replace inside (they said it might be the water spilled inside but that never happened so i don't know what he is talking about.....) is going to cost $1240
They already replaced my hardware one or two months ago and I dont get why this suddenly happens when i didnt not even spill water.
i feel like there should be cheaper way.
and the guy who was trying to find out what the problem is with my laptop
seemed like he doesnt know anything about this.
Does anyone recommend some other way so i dont have to waste my $1240+@ with a problem that they are not even sure...?

com.apple.AppleFSCMine just started doing this as did a coworker's (she has a 4 not 4S). We're both on Verizon. I just updated to the latest Verizon Carrier settings and then it started so I thought that was the issue, but since you're having this since March, I don't knwo any more. Prior to this though, mine was taking random screenshots when I'd hit the home button.

IPhone Screen Turns of Randomly
Sometimes when I am in the middle of something the iPhone screen turns off by it self, when I press the power button to turn it back on, the screen flashes a black screen and I have to lock and unlock it again.
If anyone has an idea why please help. Thank You.
Info may help:
My iPhone is unlocked with SimFree
I have the 1.0.2 Version running
I have 2 Native Apps (Apollo and Navizon)To expand on this a bit:
We really can't help you because your phone and my phone are not the same. The process of unlocking the piece could have altered parts of the OS in ways neither of use could know.
Since we do not have a common frame of reference, its is not possible for us to assist in your dilemma. -
Have had my iPhone 5 for almost a year now, love it, but lately it has been turning off randomly with percentage rates of 50% or above and when I go back to turn it back on it has the dead battery sign on the screen. I am trying to figure out if its hardware issuse or if its the battery itself. Just need suggestions on what to do? Took it in and they want me to restore it but I want to try something else before I wipe it clean.

1) Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons...
2) Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use...
3) Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes (v11) Installed on your computer
iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
Then...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and Restore

Macbook air (11", mid 2011) turns off randomly
My macbook air 11" (mid 2011) turns off randomly. Sometimes, in the middle of something a black screen. After a few seconds it starts up again, on using a key. It restarts in the application I worked on before. Strange!
Do you have put hard drive to sleep when possible checked? Try unchecking it.Have you tried repairing permissions in utilities? You could also do a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys at startup for three chimes.

MacBook Pro Turns off Randomly Only when logged in OSX 10.8.2
Hi,
I have a 2010 Macbook pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. For a couple of weeks now, when its not plugged in to AC it turns off randomly, not at any specific battery%.
Things I have tried already that were not helpful:
- System profiler battery: 374 cycles, Battery Status: Normal
- SMC reset
- Clean install of Mountain Lion without any Migraion of old System files (wanted to do this anyways before the problem arose)
- Its does not seem to be a heating issue, has happened at low temperatures
What I have noticed is that if I either run the diagnostics at startup or enter to recovery mode, I can run the battery all the way to 0% (lasts a while) and this random swtiching off doesn't occur. It only happens when I am logged in to OSX. This makes me think its not a battery issue either.
Any help would be great.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
