Why is sharing HDV iMovie Project back to camera not in real time?

The posting from Michel Raymond on Dec 22th, 2009 asked the question of why is the transfer of iMovie HD Project to camera so long. In his case a 50 minute iMovie Project would have taken 1300 minutes to transfer had he proceeded.
In my posting of Dec 18th I pointed that my 57 minutes 48 GB HDV Project would have taken 43 hours to archive back to camera on mini DV tape.
Bengt Warleby, in his reply on Dec 23rd to Michel Raymond's posting, said that " to copy back to camera (mini DV tape) should take same as movie duration".
So I carried out a simple check of this possibility by downloading 6 minutes of HDV original footage to make a new 6 minute 4.2 GB iMovie Project. No editing was carried. ie no voice-overs, no transitions, nothing extra at all to modify the original footage. I then shared this Project back to the same video camera from which the original footage had been downloaded.
The first stage , "Mixing Audio" was very quick, less than 1 minute.
The 2nd stage of "Encoding" TOOK 23 MINUTES!
The final stage of "Writing to tape" took 6 minutes.
SO, IT TOOK A TOTAL OF 30 MINUTES TO TRANSFER BACK A 6 MINUTE iMOVIE PROJECT TO CAMERA.
WHY? Why was further encoding required when no changes or additions had been made to the original footage? Why was it not transferred back in the same real time as it was downloaded?
HELP.! I really need to have some answers.

.. Is it possible to open the '09 project with '06 to utilize the share to camera feature in '06?
in iM09, choose Export using QT, and for SD choose dv-stream, HD choose QT/AppleIntermediate.. these are the only two codecs in use in iMHD6.. don't be surprised: ~13/40GBs/h ..
Is Apple considering an update to add the share to camera feature to '09 or possibly in a future version? It's a valuable tool for archiving to tape rather than DVD/HD.
speculation, esp. on future  products is not allowed as topic on this board..
.. imho, this feature was axed&buried finally with iMHD6..

Why won't my iMovie project export on my iPhone 6. I made the project but it won't export and the load bar doesn't move.

Apple no longer includes iDVD with new Macs. For some alternatives, see this post.

  • Hi all, my first time on.  I shared my imovie project to Media Browser.  Fine.  Then after it downloaded it 'disappeared.'  Where did it go?  Having found it, how do I then share it with idvd?  I am told the image quality will be much better this route.

    Hi
    I do
    • In iMovie - select a project
    • Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res.)
    • Close iMovie
    • Open iDVD and select to start a New iDVD Project
    • Import movie - from Media button - down to the right - and here from Movies

  • Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Hi, Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Absolutely.  Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie (do NOT use QuickTime Conversion).  Make sure you check the Self-Contained box.  The export will be an exact copy of your Sequence, complete with any filters or other effects you've added.  Import the self-contained movie back into the project (or another project) if needed.

  • Maintain DV widescreen format when copying iMovie project back to tape

Using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and copying a project back to tape via the camcorder, but the 16:9 widescreen format gets squeezed into 4:3 ratio. Not sure if this is fixable. In the Preferences, I turned off the auto pillarboxing under Import, but did nothing as I suspected. In Playback checking Play DV project video through to DV camera also yielded no change.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Urgent: How do I get my imovie project back into imovie?

My movie disappeared from my imovie projects but it's still on my laptop. The problem is it won't open up in imovie or go into my movies folders. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Move your Project file back to the Movies/iMovie Projects folder. Then restart iMovie.
If you want to share your project for a DVD or iTunes, AppleTV, iPhone, web, facebook, youtube, etc, you need to use the SHARE menu.

  • Imovie project back up

I have fully working imovie project(s). Want to save a copy on my external hard drive. When I do a "save as" to the ext drive or try to drag the project file from "movies" in my user folder on the mac to the ext drive I get messages to say clips are missing. If I ignore all these messages the new project is (understandably) blank. The clips clearly are not missing as the project works fine from the file on the mac. I have emptied the project trash.
Anyone know what could be wrong?

    Hi
    External hard disks - MUST
    • be Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/FAT32/DOS/Mac Exchange Will not work
Most often bought ext hd are FAT32 formatted even at Mac Store ! ! !
Click it once. Then press [cmd-I] and read.

  • IMovie '11 How do I recover a project that appears within the IMovie Projects folder but does not show in the Project Library?

I have had my MBP for just over 3 months now!  Yes, I made the switch and up until now I have been quite happy.
I now have my Time Capsule, Apple TV running and am generally getting used to life as a Mac user.............even bought Aperture and loaded all the family photos.  Now time to make some Travel movies.
I have been working on a particular IMovie project for a few weeks now.  Size is 365MB.  Yesterday I closed IMovie and when accessing later that project is not available in the Project Library window.  It does appear in the IMovie Projects folder but I cannot open it.  I have copied the file to DVD just in case.  All up I have 4 Projects, the other 3 are practice files, smaller but they do appear in the Project Library.
I have scoured the bulletin boards and tried many suggested fixes to no avail.  Main suggestion was to remove the following files from Library/Preferences
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    com.apple.iApps.plist
However, this did not sort out my problem.  In the end I put back the original files.
Does anyone have a straightforward fix for my problem or is this one of those ongoing issues that that needs Apple's attention.
After all the file is there with the others.  They are available.
I realise that I can restore from Time Capsule but I am missing the last three days thanks to 'drop out'.
    Thanks.......

Yes, considering we have an ongoing 'glich' within an Apple program with no obvious solution, we should be able to direct it straight to an Apple rep.  I will peruse this possibility when I get a moment.
You can report the problem by providing feedback to Apple. In the iMovie app, from the menu select iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback. This will take you to an Apple page where you can complete a form and submit it to Apple.
The fix for this will probably turn out to be simple/easy.....................so why doesn't Apple comment and/or address it????
Other than the forum moderators, Apple doesn't normally monitor these forums, nor make comments on posts. So, it's up to us to report the problem to them directly (using the feedback form mentioned above).
As the problem has affected me just the one time (touch wood), I haven't bothered to report it as yet. But, after seeing your posts on this, I'm now reconsidering that. Something must be triggering it. My system is in pretty good shape, so I'm guessing it must be a glitch of some sort, either in Mountain Lion or in the iMovie app itself. Perhaps it's a 3rd party app causing the problem? It doesn't give us much confidence now, in that we may start worrying about losing other projects.
A good practice is to duplicate the project from time to time (something I'll be doing more of), although Time Machine backups also provide the necessary security. To duplicate, in Project Library view (where all the projects are listed) click on the project name so that it is highlighted, then select File > Duplicate Project. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) on the project name and select Duplicate Project from the pop-up menu. Of course, you may already know this. Duplicating probably won't guarantee that the copy will not also disappear from the Project Library, but is worth doing anyway.
As I mentioned in the post I linked to earlier, when the problem arose with my iMovie project I was using ProRes 422 clips I had imported from a Final Cut Pro X Event. My immediate thought was that ProRes 422 had caused the problem. But this of course may have been coincidental - reinforced now by your experience, where you are probably working with Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) clips.
Anyway, glad to hear that you've recovered your project through Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to start from scratch as I had Time Machine turned off during my editing sessions (that's a story for another day).

  • AUDIO LOSES SYNC ON ALL HDV IMOVIE PROJECTS

1- I have a HDV project in imovie, a wedding video about 80 minutes long
2- I "share " it in iDVD [ it burns as a SD project ]
3- It plays fine until a certain point, then the audio loses sync about 60 min. into it.

...I think Apple products are not well designed at all. There's conflicts between different programs and constentally updating....personally, it bothers me. ...
    to quote myself:
The last "clean install" on my Cube was 10.0.... until today just "upgrades"... and no free alphas from www.warez.ru (apologize to our Russian friends); repairing permissions after every install (just 29 apps in use here), running cron jobs once in a while...
stable system, less then <1% problems discribed in this forums...
to do an diagnosis, why a special app doesn't run as wanted, needs precision in discribing and dicipline in following advice... </i>
Apple products ARE well designed, I made my choice '86 and I never regret it. Especially the PERFECT integration and workflow of all Apple products, hard- or software, are the main advantage of Mac systems (I do know lots of PC users... out of the box, the machines run well/besides wurms&virusses, but after installing a few app.... boom). And the updates are an offer to upgrade/of improvement, know many people still using 10.2, running smooth. . I never lost my most recent version of the edited project.. that is a user's mistake. no projects just "vanish".
if you know something better for you and your needs... you have the freedom of choice too

  • Why doesn't my imovie project for ipod touch go to my computer's iTunes when i hit the option "share with iTunes"? I need iTunes to have the project so I can format it in a video converter. Can anyone help?

I downloaded Imovie to my Ipod touch (I don't have a Mac computer/laptop) so that I can edit a project for school video assignment. I have editted the video, but I can't figure out how to make it go to Itunes. I need it there so that I can put it into a video converter for projection to my class. The problem is, I don't know how to get Itunes to recognize that there is a project made. Imovie (at least the mobile version) has a "share with Itunes" feature, which I found. When I use this feature... nothing happens on the itunes end. Does anyone know why this is and have a solution?

This is what the iMovie Help says:

Is that the procedure you've been following?

  • HDV imovie projects lose audio sync when burned in idvd

I have 80 min. HDV projects from imovie sent to iDVD, after burning them onto dvd they play fine then lose audio sync after about 60 min. or so.....

Painful in iDvd to do interviews when they happen to fall over the 60 minute mark, isn't it?
If it's of any consolation, it's more reliable in Apple's FCS2 / FCP => DVDSP.
Toast might be another option worth looking at....
    Good luck on this.

  • 'Sharing' an iMovie project

An embarrassingly basic question from an iMovie beginner – do I share my project with iDVD or Media Browser in order to burn it to disc? Help-wise, it seems to fall down the crack between iMovie and iDVD, and I can't find the answer!

SHARE TO iDVD works only for DV and Apple Intermediate Codec (which were usually AVCHD in the camera).
Anything else should go to the Media Browser. DV and Apple Intermediate Codec files can also go to the Media Browser, and most people prefer this, because the report better results, and this allows you to have multiple movies on one DVD.
In my opinion, the option to send directly to iDVD as AIC or DV was added in response to customer beliefs that sending DV, for example, would save a compression step and therefor produce better results. However, iMovie has to render even DV to DV and AIC to AIC so this is not really an advantage.

  • Project and System conflicts in LabVIEW Real-Time

    Hi
Another problem, hopefully small (but seeming big)
I tried to configure Compact RIO(9103)  with a Digital output module(9472) for PWM. The error :
" Project DIO mode is PWM; System DIO mode is Normal
"Project PWM frequency is 50 Hz; System PWM frequency is 1 KHz"  pops up when I run the VI and deployment fails.
I am unable to rectify this. I think this has to do something with the IP address to which I configured the cRIO. I configured it to an address which was present by default when I connected it to the system. MAX shows "connected- running"  as the status and also says running properly.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks in advance.
