Why is spinning wheel of death appearing more frequently?

I have been having more and more issues with my MacBook Pro.  It is 4 years old and in the last 6 months I have been having a problem with the little spinning wheel appearing more and more frequently.  Often I have to shut down to get rid of it.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • I have Mac OS X 10.5.8. Suddenly, my browsers and other apps have drastically slowed and the swod, spinning wheel of death, appears routinely. Have unplugged power and restarted, and for a moment, it is better. But swod returns quickly. What gives?

When I do most anything with the mouse, swod appears. Typing this right now is going fine, but any app, sometimes any movement by the mouse bri;ngs on the swod. This happened rather suddenly. Right now the typing is somewhat sluggish, my keyboard strokes being a bit ahead of what appears on screen. Any suggestions?

You may get a reply here but it's best to post a question in the column that it naturally belongs to ... in this case Power Macs.
All the same, have you recently reviewed your free space / memory levels.   You need 10GB free space to operate comfortably

  • Help with Logic + Plug-ins-- Spinning Wheel of Death

I'm using Logic 9.1.8 with NI's Machine Mikro and a Focusrite 2i2.  All of the most recent drivers are installed and I had been using them both in Logic successfully for days until today.  Now every time I open Logic, the spinning wheel of death appears and will not go away, leading me to force quit.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I've tried erasing the Loop stuff in the Library folder as it has said on other boards.  Please .

Thanks for your help.  For whoever stumbles upon these postings and happens to have the exact problem is me.  I drug the Maschine.component out of the plug-ins folder and on to the desktop, trashed the original, and started Logic Pro.  I then went to preferences and made sure that Logic was opening an empty project at the time of launch.  Before, when the spinning wheel of death was coming up, it was automatically going to my last project and, I believe, getting tripped up on mounting Maschine.  Now everything works fine.

  • Can't quit spinning wheel of death in FCP 6

The spinning wheel of death appears whenever I mouse hover over FCP.
It won't force quit or hide from the dock. The FCP menu doesn't appear.
It acts like it's no even running.
    Other applications will run okay.
FCP 6 (studio II) on MacPro 3.0 Quad 2gigs mem

Pressing the power button for seven seconds was the only way to shut down.
It turned out the cause was the scratch disk decided to hide.
After rebooting, my scratch disk was gone. . .Mac could see something unidentified attached to the firewire - but that's all - no identification as to what was attached.
After powering down the scratch disk (a 320 Gig WD "My Book"), unplugging the firewire, then reversing the process, everything was fine.
I still don't know what initiated the problem, but at least its working again.
Thank you for your quick response on this one.

Why is it that it would take a very long time [if ever] to change or adjust the tempo of a loop in the audio track when i set it to adjust regions to locators? Until now the spinning wheel of death is still very much spinning. thanks for any help.
Is there another way to adjust tempo of loops the faster way, any other technique?

No clue why the final processes have suddenly started to take so long. Two things I'd try: a) capture from an older tape to see if some problem with the new tape is at fault.  And b) check the health of your RAM and the hard drive.
The red frame sounds a bit like a glitch we used to have in OnLocation (actually in its predecessor HDV Rack) which was caused by a partial GOP. But that was a product of HDV Rack recording from the live video stream. It turned out that HDV cameras intentionally interrupt the data stream for an instant upon starting to record--specifically to avoid recording a partial GOP to tape. So my gut says that the tape has partial GOPs at the points where you stopped/started recording.

  • Mac Book Pro constantly displays spinning wheel of death HELP!!!

My Mac Book Pro (after installing Mavericks) displays the spinning wheel of death multiple times per day. I thought it was my Google Chrome, but now it has been happening no matter what application I am using. I used Etrecheck to see what is going on with my computer, but I don't actually know what the output means. I've copied the information below.
More information: I no longer have a Blackberry, but I don't know how to remove any software that may still be on my computer (since I see Blackberry listed under Kernel Extensions). I also backed up my harddrive on the 28th, just to be safe.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this. I'm in the process of trying to study for mulitple teacher certification exams, so this is the worst possible time for tmy computer to suddenly go haywire. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help!

    kmiddlet88,
yes, it could be due to nearly anything listed in your kernel extensions, startup items, launch daemons, launch agents, or user items above. Please check all of your installed third-party software to make sure that the versions which are installed on your MacBook Pro are compatible with Mavericks; uninstall every software package which isn’t Mavericks-compatible. After you’ve done that, boot into Safe mode, and see if you still get the beach ball of doom there. If it doesn’t appear there, restart normally and see if it appears then.

  • Spinning wheel of death suddenly in safari 7.1.3

Hi my Safari suddenly started spinning wheel of death today. It was fine this morning, but suddenly mid morning started with the spinning wheel of death. The only thing that happened was I had a pop up with some virus protection and a number to call. I couldn't get the pop up to go, so I force quit safari. Not sure if this is anything to do with it. (iTunes also gone buggy)
I restarted safari and mac, but problems still there. I downloaded etrecheck and attached is the report

  • IPhone 4s unresponsive stuck on the spinning wheel of death.

    Hi,
My 4s has gotten progressively more unresponsive for the last few days.  It worked flawlessly for two weeks or so, but the last two or so days have seen it getting weird.
Symptom 1 appeared 2-3 days or so ago: Facebook started getting freezy.  50% of the time it would take after opening it would take 15-45 sec to become to finish loading and become responsive to touch commands.
Symptom 2 happened 2 days ago: The phone  froze for 15 or so seconds, went to black screen, showed the spinning wheel of death, and then rebooted to lock screen very quickly.
Symptom 3 happened 4 hours ago:  The phone was searching for the carrier when I took it out of my pocket.  Other iphone users in the room had perfect reception.  I solved the problem by turning on airplane mode briefly and then turning it off again.
Symptom 4 happened just now: I was playing music, paused with the earbud control, switched to a different set of headphones, pressed play on the lock screen and got no response.  Realized the phone was frozen.  It stayed that way for 2-3 minutes, went to black screen and the spinning wheel of death, but then the spinning wheel of death froze as well.  It has been in this state for the last 20 minutes.
I will be happy to post time-stamped photos of the locked up phone if anyone needs proof.
A hard-reset solved the problem.  For now.
Any advice on what this could be?  A software setting?  An app interaction?
Any advice on if I should return the phone and get a different one?
    Thanks!
    --Jason

Hey sorry to hear about your frustration.
    A couple of things.
First, Facebook is known for causing issues on iPhone. It takes up a lot of memory and has been known to crash a lot. It has gotten a lot better with time and updates but can still cause problems. I tend to manually quit it from the App-switcher/multitasking tray.
Second, the reception issue you mentioned ("Searching", lack of data connection) sounds like it might be similar to some of the reports on this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3511559?tstart=30#3511559
Personally, I've been having the same problems on my 4S with reception as well as Siri being unavailable in spite of having 3G and being able to make/receive calls.
Thirdly, now that you mention it, I have noticed lack of responsiveness to touch input at times. Sometimes when my phone is locked, I'll press the home button or the wake button and it will take quite awhile before the phone reponds amd the screen turns on. Sometimes it doesn't at all and I have to press the button multiple times to get a reponse.
So, yes, many of your issues sound familiar. Unfortunately, I think I share some of them with you.
One thing you might want to check is what software version you have. The most recent is 5.0.1 build 9A406. If you have 5.0.1 build 9A405 you're not running the most up-to-date software. In that case, update by backing ul and restoring from iTunes (sofware update on the phone will not show the update; it has to be done via backup+restore in iTunes). To check what version you have, go to Settings>General>About. Scroll down and check what it says under "Version".
    I hope that helps somewhat.

  • Powerpoint & Spinning wheel of death

We bought this iMac brand new about 4 months ago. My wife has been working on a project for school on Powerpoint, and yesterday started the spinning wheel of death anytime she logs onto her desktop, when i sign in on mine it doesnt appear. Also, when she tried to open powerpoint to continue on her project, pop up appears and doesnt allow her to use anything from Office... says "make sure version is up to date with OS" it has worked fine for 2 months now messing up and she cant work on her presentation that is due very soon

If it works in your account and not hers, I suspect some conflict or corruption, usually with preference (plist) files. Simplest thing to do if both accounts are admin ones, is to log into yours, launch Users & Groups, unlock the padlock, select her account, and delete it, SAVING her data (put into a disk image and saved in /Users/Deleted Users/). Then, recreate her account, using the exact same username/password combo, quit User's & Groups, log out, and log into her account. To retrieve the saved data, mount the disk image, and copy stuff back. Do note that you can slowly restore the plist files, logging out and back in, until you determine which one(s) caused the SBBOD. For more on the SBBOD, see http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html

  • Google Desktop and the spinning wheel of death

For anyone who is reading this who has installed Google products on Leopard: DON'T!
I don't know what exactly caused the spinning wheel, but what I can tell you is that I used Onyx on my system. After that, I had huge problems with my node structure. I fixed those problems with Disk Warrior 4 and was able to at least get my computer to boot reasonably fast, but not as fast as it should. I kept getting the dreaded, spinning wheel! Why? Why? Why?, I asked myself.
Well, after reading someone else's post about running activity monitor to see what could be running, I saw that Google's Dektop analyzer was running. I quit it, only for it to restart automatically by itself.
I ended up getting CleanApp to delete a bunch of stuff I didn't need to see if that would get rid of the problem. When that didn't, I went back to the Google products and delted anything and everything Google from both Library/Preferences folders as well as from my Applications folder.
I can tell you that I am now back running smoothly and typing this note faster than I could type anything for the past 5 hours!!! Woohoo!
You can't imagine how frustrated I was. In the middle of homework and I get crunched by the spinning wheel of death.
So, for all of you who are running Google Desktop...beware! Even if you quit from your activity monitor, it will launch again immediately after. You just have to delete the darn thing.
I'm not sure if Onyx affected it or not. That's for someone else to figure out. But I haven't had good luck with both Onyx and now Google Desktop, so I'm steering far, far clear of both of those applications for now.
    Hope this helps someone.

Here is an update on my situation with Google Desktop. I found out that was not the problem at all. Actually, Software Update - 10.5.2 caused the problem. I even wiped the drive, reinstalled 10.5.1 and then upgraded again to 10.5.2 and the same issues arose. The spinning pinwheel (beachball of death) would appear for a few seconds before most operations and the system would not shut down after the Updating Boot Cache notice appeared.
I contacted Apple support by phone and they walked me through a number of steps to try and resolve. When those steps did not work, which included setting up an alternate user and trying to log of from that user, they assigned me a incident number and notified me that they'll have to scale it up to engineering to see if there will be a solution.

  • I have been transfeing my DVD footage to I movie using handbreak and the spinning wheel of death has arrived and locked up I movie as I tried to import footage.  The message says, "Optimizing movies, processing event DVD" but I can't get out of it.

Yes I held them down till the apple logo appears, then spinning wheel and repeated boot up process. I only knew it was going round in circles because the charging sound kept repeating every so many seconds.
I am downloading iOS.5.0.1 now to do a complete factory restore. I hope this works. I have been looking online for hours for fixes and I have very little batter on it as its been spinning for hours now.
Why do things like this happen? I am sat there watching tv and one minute the settings folder is there then its not! How does that happen? It just disappear? I hadn't moved it to another folder or deleted it, it just.... went!

  • Macbook Pro 13-inch Late 2011 with constant Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD)

    Hi Guys!
I really have a problem with the Spinning Wheel of Death and slow performance all the time. It suddently started after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
These are the things i've tried so far:
    - Boot up in Safe Mode and Internet Recovery Mode to repair disc permissions and disc = No Errors found at all
    - Used SMARTreporter but everything returned as OK
    - Installed 16GB of ram installed
    - Looked in Activity Monitor, but everything appears to be okay with both RAM, CPU and HD
    - Boot with Apple Hardware Test = Everything OK
    - Booted up in Internet Recovery and erased the entire HD, clean installed OS X Lion (the OS i bought the Macbook Pro with)
First i thought it was a problem with my HD or my RAM. But everything is returning the OK result. I really hope some of you out there can help me, cause right now its realy hard to use it at the University. It looks like its a software problem, but i can't figure it out.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • The Spinning Wheel of Death

For the past couple of months I have been having a problem of the spinning wheel spinning and spinning and spinning, taking seemingly forever to upload a new screen in Safari or a new application from the HD.
I did read several of the posts on the 30+ page discussion regarding freezing of machines after the latest large update of Snow Leopard. Although there seems to be a few times per week such freezing does occur, this is fairly infrequent when compared to the 95% of activity that is falling victim to the Spinning Wheel of Death. I have loved the Apple OS from the moment I began using it 5 or so years ago and this is really the very first time I've had such a frustrating issue with an Apple product (I haven't even experienced the antenna issue with my iPhone 4).
At work I have to use a PC and if this were a PC, I'd do something like check for malware to see if that was slowing the process down. I've done that on my MacBook Pro with the Mac-compatible equivalent to the Malwarebytes program I have at work, but still I get the Spinning Wheel of Death. I've even dumped some recent applications that I downloaded to see if they might have been the cause. Nope.
I don't know how to check which programs are running in the background, so that has not yet been done.If I did, I'd obviously turn off some of those I don't need to start up at login.
Does anyone have a "for Dummies" explanation of what other things I might do to attempt to remedy this situation? It shouldn't take 2-5 minutes for a web page to download or an application to begin.
    Thanks in advance.

    Gr8ful -
The link baltwo linked is a great one.
I have a couple questions for you, OK?
    1. What are you using to check for "malware?"
    2. Have you ever checked your Font Book Application in your Applications folder
for duplicates or corrupt fonts? That would be something I would check.
You can open up "Activity Monitor" in your Applications > Utilities folder.
Leave it open on your desktop, and select "All proceesses" rather than "My processes."
Have a look and monitor what kicks in when the beachball appears.
    For browser slowness:
Are you emptying your Safari Cache & History lists (assuming you're using Safari as your browser).
