Why is the AEXn Range @ pure 5GHz only 30 feet?

I recently went through the hassle of upgrading to wireless N twice - the first time not realizing the problems present in 2.4GHz channel bonding. After realizing this and upgrading all my hardware to 5GHz compliant hardware including the AEXn Gigabit Edition, I was pretty happy that I got 5GHz and 300Mbps connections.
However, I've always seen that N is touted as a faster and farther range alternative. However, in a space where there are no walls, my 5GHz signal range is only about 30 feet. After that, it drops off sharply - even more so when I move slowly up the stairs. Once I reach the top of my stairs, the signal is gone.
On 2.4GHz N only mode, I get range all over the house and consistently achieve a 13 to 30Mbps in the farthest reach of the house at well over 200 feet through walls and such. While within decent range of 50 feet or less, I achieve the maximum 130Mbps for 2.4GHz. Why is the signal degredation so ridiculously high when using 5GHz? I was trying to find the power output for the 5GHz antenna but have been unable to find it. Alternatively, is there a way to mod the AEXn to transmit both 5GHz and 2.4GHz simultaneously? Or is that a hardware limitation that cannot be adjusted?
As a side note, I've eliminated all 5GHz handsets and cell phones from the house while running my tests. In addition, I have also replaced all our house phones with 1.9GHz phones with the only 2.4GHz device being a baby monitor, which is off most of the time. There is also about 500 feet from my router to neighbors on both sides of my house - so it's hard to picture them causing 5GHz interference. any suggestions?

I pretty much have the same experience. To get 5GHz channel service on my third floor I had to "extend the network" with a second AEBSn, which drops the effective rate from 300 to 108. Still better than 54, but not as good as 300. On the first floor get 300.

  • Why does the Antenna range differ a lot between 1728 and 2506

    Hello,
I'm wondering about the documented approximate range of these two Cisco antennas, that differ a lot.
Can someone explain the big difference in range between these two antennas that have both the same antenna gain of 5.2 dBi and beam width 360°H and 38° V
    AIR-ANT1728 Indoor antenna
    Indoor range at 54 Mbps: 114ft, 35meters
    AIR-ANT2506 Outdoor antenna
    Range at 54 Mbps: 0.21miles, 340meters
Can we use the 2506 also for Indoor applications ?
    Please advise and explain.
    Thank You in advance.
    Winfried

I would assume that the outdoor range is measured in free air ie with no obstacles where the indoor range is indoors and takes account of walls etc.
I may have seen something on the test methodology but it may have related to clients rather than antennas.
The 2506 is fine indoors as it says in the installation document
    https://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/antenna/installation/guide/ant2506.html
However the range will be the same as the 1728 as the RF characteristics are the very similar.

  • Why do the apple chargers for iPhones only last a month ... I'm tired of buying chargers for three apple products in my home

Why do the iphone chargers stop working after a month of use I'm so tired of buying chargers for  supposedly the best products "APPLE" I'm getting really disturbed by it and ready to stop buying apple products

I'm not trying to start a fight, but perhaps it is how you are using them?  They are somewhat delicate, but if inserted and removed properly, and not overly stressed when in use, they last.  I have several that are over a year old with no problems, and I remove them daily.
Most failures are caused by either pulling the lightning cable by the cable instead of the connector, or strain (force) at the cable terminator.  If your cables are failing that often, it may be you need to rethink when and how to use them.
**As a point of clarification:  Are you speaking of the lightning cable?  or the charging block that plugs into the wall?**

  • Why is the "open-in" drop box only able to show 10 Apps?

I would like Apple to increase the number of Apps I can see in the "open-in" drop down box.  The limit of 10 is not enough.  I have a number of Apps that can open PDF files, however, I only use goodreader.  Every time I upgrade good reader, another App slides into number 10 and I have to delete several Apps, goodreader moves up the list and then I have to reinstall the Apps I deleted!  It's a real pain.
WHy would anyone of any intelligence impose a limit?
I have spent hours on Apples website but I cannot find any email address to send suggestion, can anyone help?
    THanks

  • Clear the"air" Mini in 5Ghz only network (stock hardware)

I recent configured my network to 8012.11n only (5 Ghz) Given the Macbook Air, Mac Pro and Lenovo T60 were all equipped with 802.11n cards. however I also have an older Mac Mini 1.83 Ghz system that I believe has a b/g network card. I figured I would just find another method to connect the mini to the network.
To my surprise though the mini can find and connect to my network. Now speeds ate slow (about 54 Mbps) but it is connecting. I thought maybe it fell back to 802.11a but I'm stiff confused why this is happening.
Can someone explain this to me? thanks.

I was digging around, and I found the wireless chipset Apple used is the Atheros AR5006x.
Take a look at it's press release here
    What do you see?
Quote:The chip integrates an entire 802.11a/b/g solution -- Media Access Controller (MAC), baseband processor, and a high-performance radio with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz capabilities
Yes, it does contains a 5 GHz radio. But how do I fully enable it? I can see the 5 GHz band only on my network list, but when when I select the network, nothing happens....
What security settings are you using?

  • Why are the creative cloud mobile apps only available for iphone and ipad? I need Android based apps

Where are the android based mobile apps? Why do you people assume everyone uses a ipad or iphone
    I want android mobile apps!

this didn't actually answer my question. The feature request link you sent me to didn't have the mobile apps for creative cloud listed Adobe Idea, Adobe Sketch and Ink and Slide they aren't available for android tablets and Android Phones. These aren't even available for Windows tablets. But they aren't available in the feature request section either.

  • Why is the new data plan offered only 4GB or 10GB?

I currently have 8GB plan for $70. This plan works well for me. I hear Verizon is not only offering a 4GB and a 10GB plan.
At times when I go over my plan I'll up the data for one month then return it back to 8GB.
Verizon is now going to keep me at 10GB for $80 and not let me keep my 8GB at $70.
Seems like their plans are not working for me. Going on 2.5+ years of loyalty with Verizon.

Your info is correct.  I agree it is a strange and unnecessarily large jump that puts those that need something in the middle in a difficult position.

  • Why is the podcast for our show only streaming/downloading half of episode?

Our podcasts on occasion have been having an issue when uploading/linking to the store.  On a weekly basis we upload video and audio podcasts through the linking of our RSS feed (Feedburner) and also utilizing the Blubrry Powerpress plugin.  On our site and server both the video and audio files are in their entirety, but upon being posted in the iTunes store they are sometimes being presented at a shortened length.  This morning our video and audio were fine on our site, but on the iTunes store the audio stream was cut at 30 minutes (the podcast should be 1hr 15min).  Somehow though, the video stream on iTunes is up in its entirety without issue.
We would love to stop this from happening! Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • Why is the latest episode of Hannibal only available in SD and not HD?

I'm a season pass subscriber to Hannibal. The last episode which aired on Thursday (May 30) is still not available in HD but it is in SD. The weirdest thing is that I don't seem to be able to download the SD version without paying $1.99 even though I've paid for the whole season.
I tried logging out of my account and restarting iTunes. As of today, June 3, the HD version of the episode still isn't in iTunes. I have iTunes version 11.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.7.5.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?

Just responding to my own question. I just got a notice from Apple that the episode is now available. Maybe someone on the iTunes team saw my message? If so, thanks!
I'm downloading the file now and look forward to watching it.

  • Why is the iPad not rated above 10,000 feet in altitude?

Is it because some pressurized part might explode? Because the air is not dense enough to cool it properly? Both, or something else?

Very unlikely. I can think of no reason for the iPad to have been designed with a pressure vessel inside (however tiny it might be). Even if there were, the force that any air within it could exert could hardly qualify as an "explosion" if such a vessel were to rupture. No one worries about a can of shave cream exploding. It contains orders of magnitude more volume, not to mention propellant, and they're not limited to 10,000 feet pressure altitude.
You could probably put it in a vacuum and it would be fine.
The limitation must be related to heat dissipation. That also explains why it's an "operating" limitation. Not operating: no heat generated, no heat dissipation required, no limitation specified. Therefore a vacuum is OK.

  • Ok Experts-why is the wav getting smaller? it didnt in 1.5

    ok experts-quick questions
in adobe audition 1.5 in multitrack one i would add an instrumental of a beat
on multitrack two i would record my vocals
when i saved these together the song wave would look like it should-with it slightly bigger than the orginal instrumental on multitrack one
because it now had that plus the vocals added to it
well now on audition 3 - when i save the vocal with the instrumental-the final wav becomes much much much smaller than the original
    multitrack one instrumental.
Does anyone know why this is?

    >...just curious much like the time I was hitting that hornets nest to see what was inside...
Okay, to perhaps satisfy a bit more of your curiosity, here's the panning hornet's nest (modified from my original version, which I finally discovered, and with a bit more information):
So what happens if you pan mono signals to the centre of the stereo sound field? Let's just consider loudspeakers, as this is the most common requirement to get right.
To get a result that sounds as loud in the centre as it does at the edges, in terms of electrical adding of signals, you need to have each side of the stereo signal outputting half of the voltage - and this would imply that the pan pot should drop the level of each signal 6dB, and not 3dB at all, like the only option we have in Audition. But, in a normal room, with a reasonable degree of reverberation, it's the  acoustical power of the summing signal in the centre we have to consider, and it's this implies that a 3dB drop is what's required - and this is pretty much the only reason that we have it set as it is. But it's more complicated than that; with loudspeakers you get mutual coupling below about 100Hz - and this augments the power coupling by about 3dB... which I'll return to shortly.
And there's more. If you record a voice talking, and pan it across the sound stage in stereo with a -3dB drop in the centre, you will get a voice that moves across the field at the same perceived level all the way. But if you reduce the result to a mono signal, you will get a 3dB rise in the signal level as the speaker passes the centre (only now it's in mono, so you can't tell) - and that isn't right at all. This means that in practice, any mono listener to a radio play recorded in stereo is going to get level differences that were not intended.
I don't think that anybody ever does what I'm going to mention next, but if you did, you'd realise the other problem here, and that would be the effect on a bass guitar if you panned it. With this, you get more LF when it passes through the centre position, because of the mutual coupling effect below 100Hz, so that's not good either (but you are going to get a degree of this, whatever you do, in fairness). So now, the pan pot has altered the EQ as well!
And it's all of these considerations that tend to cause manufacturers to compromise on 4.5dB as a centre-drop - because at the worst, over most of the frequency range, you are only going to get a 1.5dB error. But this is arbitrary; to a degree, the amount of effect you get from this is room and speaker dependant, and it also varies with the distance apart of the speakers. And it's different again with headphones, just to make it even  more confusing!
I should mention, before anybody points out that in an anechoic space, the acoustic sum on the centre plane of the speakers is the same as the electrical sum, that I'm aware of that - and just how many people do you know who monitor under these conditions? Virtually all normal spaces will acoustically couple the bass end, but most significantly, the aforementioned condition only really holds true for anybody positioned absolutely centrally between the speakers.
So I'd say, one way or another, that there are good grounds for having rather more options available for the panpots than we have at present. And yes, this really is a can of worms.
