Why is the Apple Mail application slow?

Ever since I started using the Mail app, I noticed that sending messages, pictures, and files are a LOT slower on the Mac Mail application. Then when I go on gmail.com its SUPER FAST...as it always is .
So I was just wondering why the website is faster than the Mac applicaion.

How do I recover mails from the trash can in the Apple Mail application?

I deleted all emails in the in box in the Apple Mail application and it has synched with Gmail and deleted the in box in Gmail. How do I recover them? They are not in trash in Gmail and I can't see the contents of Trash in Apple Mail. Any ideas?

Why is the Apple contacts application so mediocre?

The app is great for adding and keeping new contacts but absolutely teribble for helping you to manage them and stay connected. Something as simple as creating a group is nigh impossible on the stock app. I'm thinking that this is a phone primarily and a huge part of what makes a phone is people and places to call and talk to. This user experience doesn't make you want to really do either. The contacts portion almost feels tacked on sometimes as if they didn't even want it there.
Its just a shame that The 5S is so good in so many areas and where it falls down is something as fundamental as contacts on a phone. Apple you can do better. Why are contacts not more baked into the phone. Why is it a pain to scroll through? Why can't i setup a proper group. Why can't I track who im staying connected with? Why is the app so bland? Why can't I see pictures of my contacts?
After all the most important thing in our lives are the people in them.

I am having issues sending email from the apple mail application. reciving works but somtimes it takes an hour to send if at all. any thoughts?

I administrate an office and we switched to macs very recently. Now the problem I am having is one of the workstations will send emails but very slowly and it sometimes it doesn't send at all through apple mail. It work fine through gmail client but this client needs to use apple mail and it just won't send it will recieve messages flawlessly. Any ideas? This is the only computer having problems with this!

Can I use Thunderbird instead of Apple Mail application

Hi,
I like Apple's Mail application but it is slow in communicating with AOL. Thunderbird does pretty well and
will both read and send emails via AOL.
But when I use iPhoto or another application and want to share
a picture via email it opens the Apple Mail application by default. Then I must wait for it to talk to AOL, forever.
Can't I somehow make Thunderbird the default outgoing mail app?

I think the problem is that iPhoto won't let me select Thunderbird as the email application for sending photos. Apparently it only will use Eudora, the AOL reader, Mail, and i think one other program but not Thunderbird.

Why is Apple Mail so slow?

I use Apple mail to access my gmail account. Every time I open up this program, there's a circle (similar to the circle you have on the gray screen at start up) next to the inbox icon to indicate that it's loading my mail. It's there for like 10 minutes. Then, when I actually want to check my mail, I click on a new mail and I get the colored circle which indicates that it's thinking. After a while I get fed up and just log on to gmail directly. Is something wrong with my computer or is Apple mail just slow for everybody?

Did you upgrade to Tiger on this Mac from a previous OS X version, and if so, where you using the Mail.app with the previous OS X version?
If so, the mbox file structure was changed with Tiger Mail, and when upgrading to Tiger from a previous OS X version, there are some left over mbox files for each mailbox from the previous Mail.app version which are no longer used, but are not deleted after the conversion to the new mbox filing structure for each mailbox is completed.
If you didn't upgrade to Tiger from a previous OS X version on this Mac, have you tried using the Rebuild Mailbox function on the problem mailboxes? If not, be sure to create a backup of your Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail with the Mail.app quit before doing so before using the Rebuild Mailbox function.

Why does my Apple Mail insert old messages into the body of new emails? The correct sender's name will appear in the "From" column, but an old message from a different sender in the body. This happens randomly. I have an iMac OSX 10.6.8. I recently had the hard drive cleaned, but Apple Mail seemed to be running fine when I set it up again. Could this be a virus? Quit Mail if it's running. Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sqlite3 L*/C*/*.mail/*/L*/*/*/*.db vacuum
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
You should see a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) appear below what you entered. If not, press return. You can then quit Terminal and relaunch Mail. Test.
Note: This procedure will have no effect unless you quit Mail when you begin.

How do I use the „Apple Mail To Do" Folder on multiple Macs?

I'm using the Apple Mail To Do Folder respectively the "To Do" function in mail on my iMac and my MacBook. I will find To Dos created on the MacBook in the "Apple Mail To Do" Folder on my iMac, but the iMac doesn't show these To Dos in the associated mails. Same happens for To Dos created on the iMac when I try to use them with the MacBook. Any hint?

Turning the mail account off does not really solve this problem. All the snooper has to do if the mail account is turned off is to turn it back on, read messages and then turn it off again.
If the Apple mail works like other mail systems, you can mark read messages as unread. Then you really won't have any way of knowing that your messages were read already.
The simple solution is (wondering why Apple has not implemented it) is to remove the password in the Mail settings so that each time the Mail is opened, it will ask for a username and password.

why is the itunes download so slow - I am trying to download itunes update to recognize my new ipod touch 5th generation and my pc will not even show it in itunes, in trying to download the update the speeds are so slow that it is estimating download time in days. I have stopped and started the apple in services, but it is still unrecognized.

you know very well it has nothing to do with itunes or the modem/router. apple servers are very very slow and its an absolute disgrace.
you can download from third party servers at twice the speeds (at your own risk)
Apple is the second largest company in the world and they treat customners in this way

Why is the sound browser so slow during playback? This problem seems to have no solution. This problem even occurs on my Mac Pro With 8 Cores... This problem is in its 3rd Generation since version 8... Even AU Plugins with built-in sound browsers trigger sounds in real time. Whats up Apple? It could be remembering where it was when you last quit the program. The Green button in the upper left forces the window to the last adjusted size.

Why won't Apple Mail utilize addresses from Apple Contacts ?
Some of the people in my contacts have multiple e-mail addresses. Using contacts from within Apple Mail I can see these e-mail addresses. I then select the e-mail address I need to use and it is highlighted in blue. However, when I drag that e-mail address into the e-mail it uses the first e-mail address on the list and does NOT use the one that is highlighted.
This worked perfectly with good old Snow Leopard. Why doesn't it work now? What is the procedure for selecting an e-mail address that is not the first one in contacts ?

To see if there's a recovery volume installed reboot with the Option key held down and see what volumes are shown that you can book from. If there is a recovery volume it will be displayed. The arrow keys can be used to moved to the desired volume and the Enter or Return key to start the boot.
Yes I did that. I don't no why, but I have no recovery volume.
However, I do have mavericks on a USB flash drive. I booted from the flash drive and followed your procedure. This did not fix my Mail problem.
I notice now that after I drag an e-mail address into the header there is a small down arrow next to the incorrect e-mail address, this allows me to choose from a small group including the correct e-mail. I'm just wondering, perhaps this Is the way Apple Mail works in Mavericks.
