Why is the battery losing charge when not in use?

The last two times I have charged my iPad it has then lost charge by the time I use it again. For example, when I left for work this morning it was on 100% but 12 hours later it is on 60%. No apps were open and the cover was closed so I can't understand how this can happen.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

  • Leave iPhone in charger when not in use?

Can you overcharge an iPhone? Shall I keep it in the charger when not in use?
    Thanks!

You can not over charge the battery by leaving it plug in for long times.

  • HT4528 My IPhone 4 will not turn on. The battery has charge in it, I used it once this morning and now less than 30 minutes later it won't turn on, completely dead.

I have an IPhone 4, its less than a year old. Without warning it won't turn on. I used it less than 30 minutes ago, the battery has charge in it, but the phone will not turn on. I tried connecting the charge lead but it still won't turn on.

Have you try to hard reset your phone? Holding both power and home button until the apple logo appears on screen.
Hope this advice may help you.

  • Iphone 5 battery suddening draining when not in use

Had my iphone 5 for about 3 months and was very pleased with the battery life. But literally out of no where the battery started draining super fast. Dropping 15% in 30 minutes when not in used. Here's the deal...nothing has changed ie locations, email, icloud etc. And quite honestly what is the freaking point of having those things if it drains the battery at unreasonable speeds. So I completely frustrated with Apple for at least not saying "we understand theres and issue and we are working on it." I will never switch cuz I'm an idiot Apple diehard but there have been so many bugs of late it's just frustrating. Also at the same time of the fast drain when I swipe to delete a text the delete button dissapears within one second. Both issues came on at the same time. I'm trying reseting the battery, restoring, unchecking notifications and a bunch of other features which is so stupid... whats the point of having a smart phone if you can't use the features? So I am going to demand a new phone and I know the Apple Genius guys who are so far from genius its pathetic are going to say nothing is wrong with the phone haha, just like the did with the super slow WiFi connections I get...they were completely unaware that there was a problem with iphones and Wifi cuz of course at the Apple Store the Wifi flies when they test it there but of course once you go back to your home or business the Wifi is back to super slow. Wow the things we put up with. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions please reply.

  • Am I supposed to leave the display plugged in when not in use?

should the display be left plugged in when not in use? is it just like leaving the power cord to the MacBoold Pro plugged in when the computer is off?
    thanks

Sure, you can leave the display plugged into the socket, provided you turn OFF the display itself. There must be somewhere some switch or touch button that will turn the display OFF.
Usually, those displays use a lot of power, so it's better to save
I shall add an unrequested piece of advice: if you don't this already, please use some kind of electrical surge protector

  • Ipod Battery down 20% when not in use in one day off charger, normal?

Seems to me that if i leave the ipod off the charger for just 24 hours the battery life indicator shows it down by about 20%
Is this normal? is there a tester for the battery?
The ipod is new from December
Should i do anything to extend battery life?
    Thanks

The iPod battery indicator is only a very loose approximation of how much charge there actually is left.

    No

  • Why does the battery get hot when I'm running a lot of apps?

The battery seems to get hot whenever I'm using more than like 4 apps. Is this normal? The iPod Touch is brand new as I just got it yesterday at the apple store. What seems to be causing this problem and the battery seems to be draining quick.

Depending on the Apps being used, some required much more output/work from your iPod's hardware, which in turn could bump up its overall temperature.  If it seems a little above the norm, I would suggest taking it into your local Apple store to see what they say.

  • Keep Nano charging when not in use?

When I'm not using the nano, should I keep it charging or unplug it once its fully charged? I usually keep it in the Bose speaker (which charges it). Is this bad? Can it ruin the battery life and/or the screen as its not really "off?"

You can keep the charge connected without any problems.

  • Battery rans out when not in use

hi! i have experienced this 3x already. when i turn off my 1.7 year old macbook, it still has battery (around half) but when i turn it on the next day, the battery charge says its 0 how come it's like this? please help! im so sure that it is properly turned off already./

I too have this same problem. The only thing that seems to help is that I turn off airport and bluetooth before shutting down my Macbook. It also seems to help that I unplug the power cord before shutting down. If I do this, then my laptop seems to keep its charge all the time. If I leave either airport or bluetooth on before shutting down, I always end up with a dead battery when I go to start up my Macbook the next day.
Please see if you can duplicate this on your Macbook.
PS my battery cycle count is 50, and I have done a SMC reset and also a PRAM reset twice with no positive results.

  • Why are input-output lights flashing when not in use? Pirated signal?

I have my airport base station set up to not make itself public (ie. you must type the name of the network and password for it to appear and let you in). However, I noticed the other morning when I got up (in the dark!) that the lights were flashing like crazy. It really looks like it is in use. Is there anyway to minitor whether or not somebody is stealing signal from me, or is there another explanation?
    Thanks!

I also can state that it is absolutely normal behavior and nothing to worry about (there is always some network traffic).
Regarding security, if you really think that could be an issue, you should allow only devices their MAC addresses have been registered to the AirPort to get access.
This does not take effect to encryption, but prevents unauthorized people (e.g. your neighbor) to share your WLAN network - regardless if they know your password or not.
Settings are done at the AirPort maintenance software: Select the station, click on "configure", on new window select the tab "Access" and then add the MAC addresses of all devices that are allowed being connected.
(Note that I use the German version of the AirPort maintenance software, so I'm not sure if I named it correctly).
MAC addresses are located on all network cards or their packaging, bottom of notebooks (if they have a (W)LAN adapter; remove battery in case you can't find it, sometimes it is hidden there) or somewhere at the back panel of your desktop computer with integrated (W)LAN adapter.
Just to explain: MAC addresses are unique to each device, they should never appear twice in the World; therefore this is a very safe solution.
And if you not care much about encryption, you can turn it off completely and profit from faster network access (but this is at your own risk).

  • Does the AppleTV download data when not in use?

Im stuck with a throttled satellite connection. 7.5GB over 30 days. Ive never come close to hitting it.
Something on the LAN seems to be sucking down data regularly and I can't pinpoint it.
    Could it be the AppleTV?
I use it very rarely and only to airplay from other computers in the house, never to stream from internet.
I see its light come on regularly for a short period.
Is it downloading updates, data, content etc. during those times?

Basically it is just network talking to each other.. not internet.
But the best way is leave the TC plugged in and check your usage overnight.. most of the traffic will be internal network. Some ISP have slow meters and reporting so it could be best to track it over a few days.
Make sure your wireless is secured.. that is far more important issue than worrying about traffic via the router.

  • Battery discharges very quickly when not in use

After fully charging my Nano and leaving it for a day I find that it discharges leaving 2-3 hours of playing time.
In fact, even when fully charged I would be lucky to get 8 hours playing time.
I appreciate that the battery slowly discharges when not in use but my Mini certainly retains its charge far longer than my Nano.
I have tried "conditioning" the battery occassionally but no use.
Anyone else have this problem or is my batter faulty?

nevermind - just read an article on the apple site saying the battery is in use even when it's turned off, i suppose to save the date and time.
Wish there were an option to completely turn it off - i dont really care about the date and time.

  • N00b question - when is the battery done charging?

just got my macbook yesterday and am now calibrating the battery. is the battery fully charged when the light on the recharger turns green or when the light turns off? dont want to remove it too early. thanks in advance.

FYI,The light on the MagSafe should never turn off.
It will be orange while charging and green when fully charged.
As stated,it's safe to leave MacBook plugged in with a full charge.
Note: I would recommend calibrating the battery about every 2 months.

  • Center button lags, needs heavy push, AND 'Charging'  when NOT CONNECTED!

Ok so I was gonna sell my Nano 1st gen 2gb white so I started washing it. I kinda forgot it was electronic so I just splashed water on it. It went on the screen, and onto the click wheel i'm pretty sure. Then I used soap and washed the click wheel, and it probably went through the cracks on the wheel.
Next, I turn it on, and I have to press down hard on the middle button, not lightly as before. Probably some connection thing. So I turn it off, about to open it. However, then the 'charging' comes on, and when it's on then the battery charging icon appeared, and it WASNT PLUGGED IN. I drained the battery for a few hours, plugged it in (the computer recognised it this time) and restored it from itunes. now the charge icon was gone and it turned off properly, however the click wheel was laggy and needed hard pressing. all the other buttons and the scroll wheel wo rk fine.
so i opened it up and i don't know what to do to the wheel to get the middle button to work properly. I have unscrewed it, but do I need to detach the click wheel from the ic?
Your help much appreciated. I think it is just a connection problem with the wheel but I do not know how to fix it. Might I just dry it for a few days? Happened yesterday.
P.S. two years old so don't worry about the warranty I have opened it up before cause I left it in the washer just to dry.

Wow, I have exactly the same issue, 'Charging' when NOT CONNECTED!Its really annoying, I use it for my Nike+, its going to disrupt my training, and I'm on holiday next week. So far it just stays on until it is completely discharged, so all I do is keep it on charge all the time.
It happened after a particularly sweaty training session, so I think it must be a similar moisture problem. I've put it in the airing cupboard to dry out now, and see if that fixes it.
    Did yours dry out?
