Why is the crop tool in Lightroom 5 so sluggish on my otherwise very fast machine?

I'm running a Macbook Pro Retina, new from this time last year.  It's got 16gb RAM, a 768gb SSD (with about 150gb free space), and 2.8GHz processor.  Everything else is lightening fast on my system.  Lightroom is fine otherwise, but the crop tool is almost unusably slow.  When I tap "R", it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load into crop mode, and another 5-10 seconds to load out of it.
Additionally, it will show the incorrect preview in crop for the first few seconds, so if I go back to re-crop something, it will act as if I am adjusting the cropped version rather than the original, so if I exit too quickly, it comes back wrong.
I've tried what other users recommended - using both full screen and not, updated to the latest version, restarted multiple times with no solution.  Please help!

I was amazed at the amount of info you put into that post. Thanks for that effort.
I made sure Onyx was up-to-date and ran all the schemes you listed. That did nothing. However, reading further in your support thread gave me some ideas. I started looking into third party extensions and plugins. I recalled installing Silverlight a few days ago, for what reason I have no idea, since I trust Microsoft only marginally more than I trust Google. Which is to say, I don't trust either of them at all. So I threw that plugin into the trash.
I should have checked the performance right there, but I didn't. Right under Silverlight, you mentioned Flash. I decided to check the prefs on it, and found that it was set to allow sites to save info to my computer, and Camera/Mic and Playback were changed from "Block" to "Ask Me". I distinctly remember setting those for maximum privacy. I reset them, cleared all the files, and exited the prefs.
I just checked them again, and everything is changed back to allow Flash to have its way. Looks like I'll be uninstalling that now...
I also installed Acrobat recently, just to have an alternative to Preview. Sea Monkey opened an alert box just now, telling me to watch out for the Acrobat plugins, as they've been known to cause problems. Gotta love Adobe.
Back to the topic at hand, I think it was the Silverlight plugin that caused the slowdown. All my browsers are running at full speed now after I threw that plugin out. (Now if I could just get Safari to allow me to back up a page without re-rendering it every time...)
Thanks very much for the help.

  • Using the crop tool in Lightroom 5 I can only move and crop my photos from the top. Am I doing something wrong?

I am new to Lightroom 5 and find I cannot crop my photos as easily as I did in iPhoto. I would like to be able to drag them if I choose a custom size or crop them from the bottom as well as from the top but my two sided arrow disappears when I work at the bottom of the photo. Am I doing something wrong?

I would suggest you trash the prefs.
    Quit Lightroom
Launch Finder and find the user Library by clicking the Go menu whilst holding down the Optn (alt) key (n.b. the library is hidden until you press the optn key) and inside the Library folder select the preferences folder. Then trash the following file:
    com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist
    Then re-launch Lightroom
It’s then worth clearing each cache. Go to the top menu bar:
Lightroom >> Preferences >> File Handling (tab)
Click the Purge Cache button under Camera Raw Cache Settings; then click the Purge Cache button under Video Cache Settings. Finally click OK.

  • How come I cannot freeform the crop tool anymore?

I typically do not maintain a fixed aspect ratio for the cropping tool in Lightroom (2014).  But I needed to change it to a fixed ratio temporarily to crop to some print sizes.  But now, the "Custom" aspect no longer works.  Every time I try to crop anything, it reverts back to "Original" and I cannot change it.  After selecting custom, as soon as I start to drag an edge or corner to crop, the aspect reverts back to "original".
    How do I fix this?

If the custom numbers you type in give you the mathematically identical aspect ratio to the original aspect ratio of the photo, then Lightroom will change your custom back to "original". As I recall, sometimes if the numbers are really really close to the original aspect ratio, this will happen. No, I can't quantify what "really really close" means.
Can you give an example where this happens to you? What is the custom aspect ratio your are typing in? What is the original aspect ratio of your photo?

  • Enlarging photos after rotating with the crop tool

    Hi,
I will try a second attempt for my wish to add a feature to the crop tool:
I like the cropping tool in lightroom, but there is one feature I miss:
    Sometimes I have this situation:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellersiek/2633499034
Knowing, that in most situations the limiting cropping is ok, I wish to have an option to enlarge the resulting image like this way:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellersiek/2632678737
It is okay, if there is an option in the preferences with the ablility to select a color for the "new" pixels and the crop tool will only enlarge the picture while pressing the control key (to avoid undesirable results).
You can say: "take the right picture, move your camera", but in such photo sessions we have some good reasons to take the pictures in this way.

Of cause, after enlarging by Lightroom, I have to do something with the new area/pixels by hand. By the way, I only wish new pixels in a, in the settings definable, color - no "intelligent" enlarging.
In the session of the shown example we took 50 product pictures. In 45 pictures are the products inside enough for the cropping tool. We need a fix rotate angle for all the picture so we use sync settings to transfer all settings (white balancing, color, light, rotate, crop). 5 pictures we cropped to much, so we have to rotate in later in photoshop - this breaked the workflow.
I like Lightroom very much, because it is much faster than Photoshop, non destruktive and it is easy and fast to repeate the processing if you need to change some parameters. So I which to do the most steps in Lightroom and only those steps, for which lightroom is not designed, I will done with Photoshop.
I miss the enlarging also in other situations (like architectual or landscape photos). Sure I have to do some steps later by hand but I was able to the most steps in Lighroom in a single workflow with a single setting.
    Greeting from Germany
    Ralf
PS.: I'm not a native english speaker: What do you mean with "How is it supposed to make a judgement call about how to create the new pixels"?

  • Why doesn't the Crop tool allow me to reverse the mouse axis?

    Dearest Adobe,
When using the crop tool every axis is backwards! I know I'm supposed to move the photo, not the crop window, But for me this is not a matter of "correct" or "best practice", some people's brains do not work this way. I have been using lightroom for more than a year, and it still feels absolutely wrong every time. Please please please, I beg you, provide a reverse mouse axis checkbox.
I love Lightroom so much. Please help me...
    With love,
    Cody

The brain is incredibly flexible. But some people are left handed, some people are right handed. Some people have different dominant eyes, legs, arms.. etc. Part of learning a process is how it has been performed in the past, but another large part is the fastest and most reliable synapse. If a process "just feels wrong" that means my brain has already been trained or was wired a certain way to begin with.
The point of design is to create an intuitive interface that not only doesn't interfere, but enhances use of the interface. If I have to re-train my brain to work the way the tool wants me to think, then it is not as successful as it could be!
If you google: "Lightroom crop tool backwards" there are quite a few results with many people asking the same question.
All it needs is a preference item that reversed x and y direction for the crop tool and said: Crop Tool: Reposition the crop window/Reposition the photograph [x] [ ]
I know I'm not the only one!

The crop tool in my tool bar is not showing up. Any ideas why this is? Please Help

It's the 3rd one on Photoshop standard.  As Curt implies, each little icon position has several possibilities you can display, allowing you some customization of your Tools panel.  Click and hold the mouse button to see each of the choices.

  • Does anyone know why the delete and hide options are still missing in the crop tool option bar, despite having changed the background layer to a regular layer?  Thanks!

    "flying blind."
"You totally lost me there, and I have no clue as to what your last question means."
"I think I now know what you mean."
Evidently language is of difficulty for you.
Perhaps the Oxford dictionary can provide you with your much needed “sensible, meaningful” content.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a dialogue is to "Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem."  It also states that a dialogue is "A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed toward exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem.”
That IS the inherent nature of posts. A conversation is reciprocation.  Questions, followed by more questions.
It is not difficult to understand.
"how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers" is best actualized by simply asking.
Is it a Mac; is it not, etc.
That IS sufficient.  That IS "quicker and better answers[ing]."  That IS what a dialogue IS.   And that IS actually what is "sensible," "meaningful," and "detailed."
The Oxford dictionary can best delineate and elucidate your lack of comprehension in what ACTUALLY “meaning” is.
As well as what is "sensible" AND "detailed."
By the way, am I being repetitive.
Still confused.  Let the experts that do not require much explanation respond with "quicker and better answers" for both "sensible, complete" responses." They are not "lost," "blind," or provide "incomplete" drivel.

  • Why when using the crop tool in Photoshop CS6 does it suddenly change the layer and file format?

I really need help with this. If I open a jpg in PS6 and crop it, the file transforms from a locked background layer to Layer 0 which is not locked. Then if I want to Save as a jpg I must flatten the layers as it is now a PSD file. SO frustrated! Anyone know what's going on?

Enable the Delete Cropped Pixels in the crop tool options up top—this is the phrasing in my PS-CC.  I assume PS-CS6 has a similar crop tool option.
If you don’t delete the cropped pixels, they are just hidden, then a layer needs to be created to hold the hidden pixels.

  • Why did you omit the perspective check box in the crop tool?

I used the perspective frequently because I have sciolosis & most of my photos are askew. that easy checkbox was very convenient.

Perspective Cropping is now its own tool, right under the Crop Tool in the Tools Bar.
    Here's a video: http://iceflowstudios.com/2012/tutorials/photoshop-cs6-beta-perspective-crop-tool/

  • Why are the CROP and RED EYE TOOLS grayed out?

My sister, who is new to iPhoto, can't crop her photos because, she says, the crop tool icon is grayed out. She's using iPhoto 4, v. 4.0.3.
She lives in another state, so when I come up with a solution or solutions, I can try to talk through it on the phone - each of us on our computers.
It was suggested by someone on another forum that the com.apple.iphoto.plist file in her Preferences folder in her library might be corrupted and that deleting that file & then relaunching iPhoto could solve it.
I talked my sister through deleting the file & relaunching iPhoto but it didn't do the trick. When she selects a photo and clicks on Edit, both the Red Eye AND the Crop tools are grayed out.

It's been awhile since I used that level of iPhoto but I believe that you have to select an area on the photo before you can use either of these two tools. For crop simply select the desired area and for red-eye select a small area around the eyes.

  • Where is the Crop tool in CS6?

I used to use the Rectangular Marquee to crop an image, but that is no longer an option.  Where is the Crop tool?  I tried to use instructions at Photoshop Help | Adjusting crop, rotation, and canvas but that did not help.  It never did tell you how to crop an image.

I used to use the Rectangular Marquee to crop an image, but that is no longer an option.
    Why?
Make the Selection, then use Image > Crop if you want to use that Tool.
The Crop Tool still has the single-key-shorcut C, so depending on your settings hitting C or shift-C repeatedly should select the Tools with which the Crop Tool shares a space in the Toolbox in turn.

  • Crop tool of Lightroom in CS5?

    Hi,
are there any changes to the crop tool in new PS CS5, that enable a simliar cropping than the cool crop tool in Lightroom?
    Thanks

The only difference between the CS4 and CS5 Crop tools is that in CS5 you can display a rule of thirds or a grid overlay.

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • LR5 when I use the crop tool or the brush tool the DONE box that shows up in the bottom corner is gone. How do I get it back?

When I go into the crop tool (or any other tool) there is usually a DONE box that shows up on the bottom to exit the tool. Recently it disappeared. Now to close the crop I have to use the short cut key or click the tiny little "close" on the side. Is there a way to get the done button back? I updated with the latest software update and also reset all custom setting just incase I changed something accidentally. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you so very much! I must have gone 2 months trying to figure that out… and finally I asked. Such a simple solution too.

  • What is wrong with the crop tool in Photoshop CS6? (picture included)

Ever since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and started to use the new crop tool, I get this quite interesting visual error and some artifacting.
I didn't have the problem with the crop tool in the previous versions of Photoshop.
    What can be the issue?

Seems like a GPU problem. Can you try going into Photoshop Preferences, disable GPU acceleration and try if that fixes it?
