Why is the Dock in Mavericks so friggin UGLY ?

When you set the dock in Mavericks to be vertical on the left or right side of the screen, it's got a solid blurring white background. It looks like s*****.
How could anyone have approved this? How do we change it back to the way it was in Mountain Lion?  These UI changes with iOS7 and MacOSX really concern me. The whole idea of having a Mac or iPhone was that it was a thing of beauty that designers spent time designing.  I can just see that MacOSX is going to copy the iPad iOS7 Dock and just blur the whole screen. That is not design. I don't want a Mac or iPhone to look like windows 95 with 8 bit icons, and no sense of taste or aesthetics.  Please tell me there is a way to turn off this ugly dock background?

There were some third party apps (and terminal commands) that removed the dock shelf in ML but these don't work in Mavericks.

Go to system preferences, click on Dock and then make sure magnification is ticked and the slider bar next to it isnt on minimun.

  • Why does the dock keep moving to my secondary monitor?

I work with a dual monitor set-up. The screen on my 15" powerbook functions as a palette monitor to my larger display. Everything is set up in the system preferences for the dock to be on the larger display. But since I upgraded to Maverick a few days ago, the dock sometimes moves to my palette monitor. I "think" it happens when I've got a few windows open and I'm writing an email to a client and have to pull up information from various files. So I'm moving around on both displays at that point. I also have the radio streaming from the palette monitor.
The first time this happened, I just went into System Preferences and re-selected the main monitor under the display icon and the dock moved back over.
But, then today it moved to my secondary display again and I tried going into SysPref again and doing the same thing, but the dock just stayed on the smaller screen. I gave up and did a restart which reset the dock back to the main monitor.
Clearly this is disruptive to my workflow. How can I lock my dock into place on my main monitor.
    Thanks in advance. Sandra

    Hey Sandra MacPherson!
Here’s an article for you that may enlighten you about the functionality of the Dock in Mavericks:
OS X: Using multiple displays in Mavericks
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5891
    Working with the Dock
When the Dock is configured to appear at the bottom of your screen, it's available on whichever screen you’re working on. Just move your pointer to the bottom of either display. When the Dock is configured for the left or right position, it appears on the leftmost or rightmost display edge.
Tip: If you don't see your dock because it's set to hidden or there's a full screen app on the display, move your pointer to the location of the Dock. If the Dock still doesn't appear, swipe your pointer towards the Dock again to unhide it.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • The dock in Maverick is doing strange things to word and excel files

For years (and Mac operating systems), I have kept Microsoft word and excel documents on my doc. I use these documents frequently...click on the file icon in the dock, it opens, I edit and save. Click on the icon again and the saved document opens. so simple.
Since upgrading, I click on the icon, the file opens with a number following the file name (version number I assume) but before docx or xlsx. I edit and save, but get a "save as" box. Now I have to edit the file's name, find the original and replace the original with the new version. Not so simple.
Since I open and close my daily billing log many times a day, this has slowed me down (and irritated me).
I have had no other problems with my Maverick installation and these files are in Word and Excel 2008. This does not happen to powerpoint or any other file I tried so far.
Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Your Mac will generate a new .plist file automatically after restart.
Deleting the .plist file shouldn't delete any app icons from the dock.
Check the startup disk just in case.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you can access the built-in utilities to repair the disk using OS X Recovery

  • Solution to the issue of summoning the dock in Mavericks - dual monitor setups

Have you noticed that the dock doesn't appear on the second screen as prompted? I've contact apple and was told that the dock is actually being transferred. Refusing to believe that it takes that long, I ventured on finding a solution. Atlas, I found one and one that works.
Whenever you want to summon the dock on your secondary or primary monitor and it's not appearing. With yoru cursor already at the hotspot, keep dragging your mouse down, and it will show up.
This method is alot faster than waiting, or dragging your mouse up and down again to hover over the dock.
    Cheers!

    Nice find.  It works great!
I noticed this feature when I upgraded to Mavericks a couple months ago, but could not find how to control it.  My two displays are set up vertically, with one on top of the other.  I prefer the dock on the larger 24" display sitting above the native MBP screen.  The system typically defaults to the dock on the lower screen, but now I'm able to command it to the top screen.
    Thank you!

I have the icon that the dock is running. The icon is in the dock and it is so annoying! i tried everything to get it away, hide it, or shut it down but it says that it's not responding, but it is. I also tried force quit and that doens't help either, Pleaseee help thanks.

What does this icon look like - can you describe it, or take a screenshot?
If you click and hold the icon, you might get a menu that shows an Options submenu. One of the selections is "show in Finder":
    Does that show anything useful?

  • Why is the dock so ugly and can I change its appearance?

Can I change the look of the dock in mountain lion?

You can hide the Dock by going to System Preferences/Dock; choose Automaticlly Hide and Show the Dock, and it will disappear until you want to see it. This is especially useful if you use a portable Mac.
However, if you want a full makeover, try this:

  • Why is the Dock application consuming CPU?

I got a new MacBook Pro 15" retina display, migrated my data from my old mac, and now the Dock application is consuming a ton of CPU on the system.
I have found many other threads in these forums, many of them quite old. They typically suggest a problem with VMWare fusion or Parallels, neither of which I have on my system. They also suggest removing the com.apple.dock.plist file and killing the application, which did not help, nor did removing all applications from the dock and quitting all other applications.
What else can I do to try and fix this problem?

Have you tried restarting the computer? Also,
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
You can also kill the Dock process using Activity Monitor.

  • HT2491 Why does the Dock go into a darker mode?  How do I prevent this from happening?

Following installation of MacOSX Snow Leopard, the application icons on the Dock started out as being brightly illuminated. After using a few they have now reverted to a darker image.  I am able to get the application I wish to use to light-up brightly when I am using it but all of the others remain darker.
Cannot find any references to adjusting the brightness of the Dock.
Any suggestions as to how I can make all of the applications in the Dock remain bright?
    Thanks.

    Hmmm, I've not seen this!???
    Long shot, but...
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and down in the Display: section make sure that the Enhance contrast: slider is all the way to left to Normal, or more to the right for less Contrast.

  • Why does the dock get small after resizing

I have to reside the dock every time I get on my MAC.  How do I save the setting?

Look for the files that baltwo mentioned in these places:
To remove the Dock Preferences file ~/Library/Preferencces/com.apple.dock.plist in Lion or Mt. Lion from the hidden user library:
Click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option ⌥ key, until you see the "Library"  in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.
Scroll down to the "Preferences" folder and open it.
Then drag com.apple.dock.plist to the Desktop.
To launch "Activity Monitor" type "Activity Monitor" into the Spotlight search field in the upper right corner of your screen: Then select the Top Hit and click it to open: That is a quick way to search and launch applications that are not in your Dock.
To force quit the Dock process using Activity Monitor:
After deleting the Dock process quit Activity Monitor and reset your Dock.
Log off and on again and see what happens.
Post back, if you have more questions, how to find things on your Mac.

  • Why is the new version of Firefox so ugly and not as user friendly as the previous versions?

I've been using Firefox for years now and always loved it because of the simplicity of use and the add-ons that made my life easier. Now the major add-on that I use is no longer compatible, the new setup is visually disorienting, and apparently users have to make all kinds of adjustments to be even decently happy with their browser. Why on earth would you ever consider releasing an update that requires the users to do half the work to be satisfied with the program, or to update their OS to a system with which they're not comfortable? I switched back to 3.6 immediately, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Plan A: Simply "Enable" the menu bar again. Click on the Ugly orange button, Choose Options and then choose "Menu Bar".
    Plan B: Install this theme
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-3-theme-for-firefox/
I'm sure changing the theme was a point of major debate to the developers. In the end, I think they only alienated their existing userbase. If we want something that looks like Google Chrome, we'll use Google Chrome.
Google Chrome is difficult to use to the average user. Now Firefox is too. Too tech inclined. Completely out of touch with the vast majority of web users.

  • I downloaded Maverick and now I can't open pages from the Dock.  The Pages icon just jumps up and down abut doesn't open.  However, I can one pages by clicking on the App. I have an iMac with iWork 08.

Since upgrading to Maverick from Mountain Lion I am unable to open Pages from the Dock.  When I click on the pages icon in the dock the icon just keeps bouncing up and down.  However, I can open pages by clicking on the icon in the Apps folder.  No problems prior to upgrading to Maverick.

Quit Pages. Drag its icon out of the Dock. Create a new one by dragging the application into the Dock. Test.

Thanks for your reply LexSchellings, There is no disc in the drive and I went through the suggestions you put forward on the phone with Apple support without any luck. I can put a disc in but it pops straight back out again without registering on finder.
The idea of using an external drive was to enable me to avoid the cost and loss of productivity whilst machine in repair... if I have to take it in to get the old drive removed than I might as well have a new internal drive put in, although I do worry about the reliability of these apple drives given my experience with this one coupled with my limited online research ... on line forums seem to be full of people with the same problem (although perhaps searching such forums is bound to make it seem a common problem as users with perfectly working machines are less likely to post (?)) Your reply suggests that no external drive will work whilst the existing drive is in place.
As a postscript: I do realise that this is a user forum ...my secondary question was asking if anyone knows how to put forward a case/complaint to Apple... I can't find a link on the support page that would enable me to do so and I was wondering if anyone on this user forum had any ideas/experience..
