Why is the font messed up when i open my home page, letters h, n, d are bold on one side of the letter

while running foxfire some letters look itialic or are bold on one side of the letter. Letters such as d,h,n. and l.

By default, Firefox will attempt to use your graphics card processor to improve font rendering. But, due to incompatibility with some graphic card driver software, this can look worse than a plainer rendering. To see whether this is the problem, you can turn off this feature.
That may require changes to one or both of these settings.
(1) General hardware acceleration setting
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
That takes effect the next time you exit and restart Firefox.
(2) Azure setting
(a) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(b) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''gfx''' and pause while the list is filtered
(c) Double-click the '''gfx.content.azure.enabled''' preference to switch it from true to false.
I don't know whether that kicks in right away or the next time you exit and restart Firefox.

• How can I get the e-mail address to automatically fill-in when I open Firefox home page

Whenever I went into my e-mail icon on my desktop my e-mail address was already filled in, all that had to do was to type in password,Tab and was on e-mail screen. When I go into Mozilla Firefox icon on my desktop ,I have to type my address and my password before my e-mail screen appears

You are of course trying to get an email address in the format of [email protected] You already have "username" the trick is the somedomain.com. I don't believe that the pop3 server has anyway to tell you this. Unless your host name is "fully qualified", i.e. pop3.somedomain.com, I don't know that you can get this information. Maybe you could take the IP address and do a reverse DNS lookup? Still you wouldn't really know if that is the domain the user really wants. For example I retrieve and send my email from aaa.com, but my domain for my reply-to is bbb.com. Your goal is noble, but perhaps not practical. That is why Outlook Express requires the user to enter their email address when setting up an account. Hope this helps.

• When I open .docx in pages, why do I lose parts of the document?

I have been happily converting from word to pages for the last year. But recently I noticed that I have been losing pages of word documents when I open them in pages. I suspect that the losses relate primarily to the type of content since in the first case the document contained a table and in another it contained embedded graphs. The odd thing is that some of the info is being converted, just not all. When i opened the document containing the table it appeared to have a single page but I later discovered that it was actually a 2 page table, but only the first half came through into pages. The other documents contained several pages of embedded graphs and charts. One of them was visible, the others seemed to not exist. In that case it was a single bar chart in the middle of the original document while the others were missing.
Is there anything I can do about this short of using a different program? I can't continue opening emailed word docs in Pages if I risk losing vital information in the process.

That helps with the table problem. Thanks!
And I figured out the source of the problem with the charts. The original document seems to be referencing an external file, or at least that's what the pages warning says. I can open it just fine in word without having the files that created the original chart though. Is there any kind of workaround for this or are embedded charts just not going work in pages? I think the original charts were created in excel and then pasted into word.

Try moving the com.apple.addressBook.plist to your Desktop and start Contacts.
To get there, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go menu in Finder. Then, navigate to Preferences folder.

What you are experiencing is 100% related to Malware.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

• When I left-click the home button, how can it open my home page in a new tab?

I thought it used to do that. I had to do a clean install of Windows, I believe I was only on FF 22 or 23 when this happened. Now I'm on FF 26 and obviously all my settings are gone.
I'm 99% sure that when I left-clicked on my home button, it opened my home page in a new tab. I know I can middle-click to get that affect, but it used to be left-click and I do that automatically now. But I don't want to lose the current window I have up, so something's wrong.
Anyone know how to fix this? Or an add-on to do this?

If you hold down the Ctrl key while left clicking the Home button then the home page opens in a new tab.
You can also middle-click the home button like you can with any other link

• The lock symbol does not appear when I open a secure page in firefox 4.0. Has this been removed?

Previously, using firefox 3.6.1, when I opened a secure or encrypted page, the lock icon appeared on that page.
When I upgraded to firefox 4.0, the lock icon is no longer appearing when I open a secure page. Please confirm whether this has been removed or in the alternative whether there is a way to determine that the secure or encrypted page is indeed secure to use.

In Firefox 4 you no longer have the Status bar that showed the padlock in previous Firefox versions.
The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server.
So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL.
The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the [[Site Identity Button]] on the left end of the location bar.

• When I click my home page icon the tab this is open goes to my home page BUT another new tab opens.

when I click my home page icon the tab that is open goes to my home page BUT another new tab opens. How do I stop the new tab from appearing?

It's easy to add extra tabs to your set of home pages. You can use the Options dialog to make sure there is only one. These articles point the way:
* [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
* [[How to set the home page]]
Because the space is short, you may want to select the whole home page URL (Ctrl+A) and paste it into a document or into a larger textbox like the one I'm typing in now. You're looking for a vertical bar (|) that is followed by a second URL.
If it's not part of your home page setting, the most likely cause for this change is a bad add-on that rode along with some free software.
I suggest starting here:
Open Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
Then, in Firefox, open the Add-ons page using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible).
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that shut down the extra tab?

• Want new tab to open to home page and why does firefox not have a simple check box in the options because I can't keep going through a long procedure each time

I want new tab to open to home page and why does firefox not have a simple check box in the options because I can't keep going through the long tedious procedure each time I install firefox. It is something that should be in the options tab , and I want to know why it isn't. I am totally frustrated with firefox and getting ready to switch.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Can email be kept open in the background when you open a web page?
Thanks, that helped.

If you mean using the mail app - yes it can be kept open. You do not have the multiple open windows feature in iOS like on a computer so you still have to navigate back to the mail app via double tapping the home button or by swiping to switch apps if using multitasking gestures.

I use Ubuntu 10.04 and I also get this problem when attempting to open a link through TBird 3.1.10. Firefox 4.0.1 '''opens to my homepage only'''. I have to physically put the link address in the address bar to go to the link.
