Why is the headphones output jack so loud?

The output from the headphone jack on the left of my MacBook Pro 15" (base model, latest as of 16/07/11) is incredibly loud. Even when my Mac has the volume on one 'bar' or 'block' when using the volume buttons, it's still extremely loud and almost deafening. I fear how loud it must be over two blocks, because I simply can't listen to it.
Is there any change the min/max volumes that are possible? This MacBook Pro is only 2 days old.

Changing the output volume in Settings yeilds the same result, still very loud. I also performed a PRAM reset and it's still very loud.. this is a really weird problem :\
Hmmm. Agreed, very weird. There have been many and varied issues with MBP audio out ports. I would try another set of headphones, if possible, and if same issue there, contact Apple. 90 days free phone support, 1 year hardware warranty, 14 day return/exchange period.

  • TS1574 you should mention that the audio output jack is fleaky, try plugging and unplugging until red light goes off !!!

It should be mentionned in the Apple help that the audio output jack is sometimes fleaky, as it does not reclose the speakers contacts correctly when an earphone jack is removed. This can be checked by looking into the computer audio jack and seeing a red light, which confirms the optic output is active. Plugging and unplugging the jack until the red light disapears is the cure, unless you are unfortunate enough to have a broken audio jack. Good luck !

Same here. I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary. I was working in Parallels on getting a AM station to stream via some web interface. Next time I went to play sound on the internal speakers, no go.
I've tried zapping the PRAM, toggling the headphone jack and the toothpick thing. Nothing seems to work.
I've also noticed that I get sound in my headphones in iTunes but not in Garageband (someone had suggested that starting up Garageband would reset things.
    Any other ideas out there?
Is there a file that could get corrupted that I could switch out of my back up?

  • Digital(computer) noise on headphone output jacks

    Hi
I have a dv9000 which has a problem with  digital(computer) noise on headphone output jacks. I hooked  it up to my car
stereo axillary input jack and noticed a lot of static noise, even with laptop sound muted. Only time there is no static, or very minimal  is when I put the laptop in hibernation mode. So I'm pretty sure it's a digital form of noise.
I have a HP DV5T also and it does not have this problem. So is this a common and accepted problem with all older dv9000 series laptops?  Or is there a problem with my dv9000? and if so, what do you think it might be.  I've looked at the dv9000 headphone output on the Oscope and I did indeed see square waveforms mixed in with other random noise.
FYI---When head phone is used, there seems to no noise or is very faint. Do headphones have inherent ability to filter out the digital form of static?
    Thanks
    Tom

i just bought a 4520s pro-book and i'm having the same problem but i DO hear the noise with my headphones. when i plug in my headphones i can hear every time the HD spins or a window opens or closes, and the cd drive is unbearable. this is driving me nuts because i bought this notebook for my music production so i sometimes spend hours with headphones in. i have contacted support with no success. anybody have any ideas?

  • Can I set up a 5.1 surround with the headphone output?

Can I set up a 5.1 surround with the headphone output? I've got everything connected to the headphone output but it doens't seem to work very well.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Great Question!
The output on the notebook is 2.0 unless specified.
Most 5.1 headphones make a virual surround sound experience unless they require multiple mini jack inputs, optical, or coaxal.
The only way to experience true 5.1 on a notebook is to have an internal 5.1 card (which is not included in current HP notebooks) or purchase an external to plug in (USB or ExpressCard).

  • Why was the head phone jack moved to the bottom of the iPhone 5

Why was the head phone jack moved to the bottom of the iPhone 5

Because it worked better with the new design, most likely.  To get the real answer you'd have to ask the people that designed it.

  • I'm using my electric guitar with GarageBand. With the input/output jack being full of my guitar cord, does anyone know if I can rig a BlueTooth speaker for output? Thanks in advance for any response.

I'm using my electric guitar with GarageBand. With the input/output jack being full of my guitar cord, does anyone know if I can rig a BlueTooth™ speaker for output? Thanks in advance for any response.

    yes this will work
you can also get a splitter cable that goes in to your in/out port so you can have 2 (or more) separate ports

  • Why is the headphone jack on the bottom?

I was really excited for the iPhone 5 but now I don't think I'll be getting one.  For me, changing the location of the headphone jack is entirely unnecessary.  I've been reading up on this, and the only reason I can find for it is because people say it's more "natural" to put their phone in their pocket upside down; this doesn't make any sense to me!  Is it really that hard to move your arm straight down to your pocket with your wrist straight instead of only rotating your elbow?  I find it irritating that I would have to store the phone upside down in my pocket, and that would just make it harder to adjust the volume or flick the vibrate on without taking it out of my pocket.  That's something I do all the time: walk into a classroom or theater, and need to make sure my phone is on silent without pulling it out and drawing attention to myself.
I also get that you can lay the phone flat on a desk and have the headphone cord hang off the edge.  But what about when I have the phone propped up?  I guess I can't do that anymore.  I also can't leave it upright in a cupholder while I drive.
I've been an iPhone user because I like how professional and uniform Apple products look.  But storing and displaying my phone upside down destroys that asthetic for me.  I know some people will say that orientation is a stupid thing to quibble about, but Steve Jobs was known to obsess over far smaller things (I'm not saying this was one of them), and that's what makes Apple products so well thought-out.
So what is the point of putting the headphone jack on the bottom?  Can anyone give me a real reason that I can support?  I really want to be able to get excited about this phone, but at this point I think it's unfortunately a deal-breaker for me.

Goldplatedrock, i agree with you. This is not an over reaction. Steve Jobs was meticulous with design and usability - and i am sure he would NOT have accepted the headphone jack going to the bottom. He was known to scrap designs 6 weeks before the first iphone was about to hit the market.
It really is a a terrible move but i think they had to move it for engineering reasons.
It has even been moved on the new ipod touch.
Think of all the car holders and desk docking stations that will not be able to be used when wanting to keep the headphones connected. Plus upside down in your pocket? - that really *****.
I also wonder how the new lightining connector will hold up the whole phone with accessories like speakers - it will not be able to hold it up.
    Steve come back..............

  • MBP headphone output - left signal louder

When mixing down some music in Logic, I recently discovered that the headphone jack output on my MBP is not very well balanced. The stereo signal is distinctly louder in the left channel than in the right - judging from a rough mix, I need to pan about 20 % to the right in order for the signal to be as loud in both my external speakers / headphone speakers. I have this problem with all the audio I play, be it in Logic, Spotify, iTunes, ...
I'm hoping it's a software problem. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Brian708 & Courcoul for the suggestions, but I'm afraid neither is the solution...I've got the problem with all my headphones and also when I connect the laptop to my stereo using a mini-jack cable.
I don't notive any difference in volume when I play stuff over the built-in speakers..

  • Macbook pro headphone output jack faulty,

Only left headphone working, have tired using 5 different types of headphones to make sure it isn't the headphones. A buzzing sound come from the left headphone and the song is distorted on full volume with beats headphones. Is it that the output jack is broke?

  • TS2634 how do i disable the headphone output?

My headphone's jack broke inside the ipad headphone output. Thus my Ipad doesnt emit any sound through the speakers. I'd like to know if there is anything i can do to choose from which output I'd like to listen to its sound. In "skype" i can do this choice, for example. Thus it´s not a hardware issue....
I appreciate in advance the feedbacks.

I have heard of people having success using a q-tip with the cotton removed and super glue.
Put the glue on the stick, carefully insert until in contact with broken part, let glue set and remove slowly.
Personally, I would check with Apple first for repair options.

  • Why have the headphones that come with the iPhone within the last year lost their sound quality?

Doesn anybody know why all the replacement headphones and headphones that come standard with the iPhone and iPod lost their quality?  I broke my headphones I got with my iPhone two years ago and I went in to get a replacement pair.  All the ones (standard iPhone headphones) I tried have no bass anymore.  I let the store person hear the difference and he agreed.  A friend of mine bought an iTouch recently and I listened to the ones that came with his iTouch and they are just as bad (he doesn't know the difference because he never heard the older pairs).  Why has the quality dropped on the new issuing headphones? I am so disappointed because I was happy with the quality of sound coming from the original pair, but they are no longer making them...WHAT HAPPENED???  New manufacturer?  Or is this a way to get people to have to buy after-market products?

Why would Apple care if you bought after-market headphones? They don't make them. Unless maybe the manufacturers of those headphones bribe Apple...

  • Red light in the headphone output of my MacBook and no speakers.

My MacBook recently has been shining a RED light out of the input for the headphones. This is accompanied by the problem of me not being able to get sound to play out of the internal MacBook speakers...I believe the two are related. I am able to play music when I plug in headphones and hook my computer up to my TV, but when I disconnect the source I cannot hear anything coming out of the computer itself. When I try and adjut the volume with the buttons on the keyboard the volume icon appears and a little "no smoking" or "circle with a line through it diganal" appears next to the level of volume that I want to hear...Can anyone please give me some insight as to what may be the problem with my MacBook.

there's a small switch in the very back of the headphone jack. I know it doesn't sound like a good idea, but just take a tooth pick or something small and flick the tab by the light. it's somewhere around the 4 or 5 o'clock position.
the switch turns the computer's audio out from digital to analogue and seems to get stuck with some computers. mine had this problem but hasn't resurfaced since.

  • Why is the DAQ outputs distorted?

I am trying to output two voltage sine waves(90 degrees out of phase) from my DAQ card. I use a for loop to create two arrays of 1000 samples each. I then send each of these arrays to my DAQ card for sampling of 5000S/s. One of the outputs(measured on an oscilliscope is perfect while the other clips and is distorted. Why am i not getting twp perfectly good sign waves? Is this a hardware issue?
Please find attached my LabView file.

I haven't looked at your vi yet, don't have 8.6 on this machine (please identify the version when attaching vi's), but do have some questions. Are they both set to the same amplitude? Are you looking at them individually (re: single channel scope) or both channels at the same time? Are they both connected to the DAQ inputs in the same way. Usually, if there isn't an actual hardware problem with the outputs, distortion and clipping are caused by; 1) trying to output a waveform of an amplitude greater than allowed, 2) trying to drive a seriously mismatched load. In the later category hooking up to the DAQ incorrectly might cause a problem.

  • I get noise when I combine left and right from the headphone output.

I need to combine the left and right channels of a Macbook Pro at the output connector.  When I build the cable to do this, there is significant static noise introduced.  If I break the short between left and right, the noise goes away.
(I'm doing this to put both channels of audio into a single side of a set of headphones, and I really don't want to buy a mixer.)

    Eddie,
I just ran a test on my G5 Logic system (Logic 9.02) with an internal RME PCI 8in/8out Audio Card and I get perfect separation bouncing to a stereo audio file using standard panning. Click on one side and a couple of crunchy guitars on the other. Each side is completely separate.
So, it seems to point to your hardware unless you have some other audio routing that we've missed.
I'm re-doing my setup so I may try a couple of other tests as I go along.

  • HT3986 Why does the sound output not work on Windows 7 Bootcamp?

The internal speakers work fine, but I want to use my surround sound and can't seem to get it to work. It doesn't even work with headphones. Is there an update I need to install or what?

Alll I can offer is what I bookmarked, that you can access, other threads, and of course Google and what others have found works.
A simple instruction manual I can't offer but a few words of wisdom, Apple provides driver to enable a chip or device but that is not the end, just the beginning.
