Why is the Lion download incredibly slow even with a fast connection?

Downloading Lion using a fast ethernet connection and I'm still getting a download time of 7 hours? It is niot my connection or machine.

I think it depends on how busy the servers are, Kevin. I've heard several reports like yours . . . I waited til last night about 11 pm, and it was fairly quick -- say about a half hour or so. Try another time.

I have the fastest internet available in my area and I usually download movies and other files of similar size to the Yosemite upgrade in just a few hours. When starting the download of Yosemite the download time was estimated at roughly 5 days 20 hours. I download digital copies of movies from apple all the time with no problem so why is Yosemite taking so long to download? I have confirmed that it's not a problem with my internet connection and my Macbook does not have connectivity issues either. Someone please tell me that OS X Yosemite will finish downloading sometime in this lifetime!

OS X Lion is incredibly slow (even after index)

I've installed Lion on my iMac (24-inch, Early 2008, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) and it has become INCREDIBLY slow. I've heard many people saying that the machine would return to its typical blazing speeds after indexing finished, and it has — I've left it on overnight a couple of times to make sure everything finished, and it's still much slower than it was while running Snow Leopard. Virtually every application hangs — when typing in Finder (for example to rename a folder) the text lags several seconds behind what I'm typing. Mission Control is terrible — the graphics lag behind and it takes several seconds for the animation to finish. Often the animation doesn't appear at all, and it just flickers between frames awkwardly until the mission control display finally appears.
I'm working on backing up all my data and doing a clean install … I'll see what happens, but if it doesn't work I'm going to have to roll back to snow leopard, because this is ridiculous. I've never seen an OS change slow down a machine so much since Vista … hopefully it's fixable. Any thoughts on what might be the cause?
(Oh, and activity monitor scans look normal … nothing's hogging the CPU, and there's slightly less than 2GB of RAM free almost all the time.)

Ok guys I had the exact same problem but I think I found a solution. I just did it about 30 minutes ago and since then my MBP is running just like it used to with snow leapord. No gaurantees that i fixed the problem but this is what i did. I went to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. I then ran a verify disk scan and found that there were many problems with me Macintosh HD drive. It said I needed an install disk of lion to fix. Since there is no disk I thought I would experiment and this is what I did.
     1) shut down my computer and then started it back up while holding down the alt key. (this should bring up two disk options to run your computer)
     2) I chose the second option (I believe it is called something like "recovery disk" but dont quote me on that. you want to select the one that is NOT Macintosh HD)
     3) It loaded and then gave me four choises of what to do. I clicked disk utility.
      4) From there I ran the verify disk scan again then clicked repair disk.
     5) I then ran the verify disk perrmissions scan and then repaired those as well.
     6) then I restarted my computer and spotlight indexed the computer (i let it do its thing without running any programs) once it was done my computer worked so much faster and for the first time I can say, I AM GLAD I HAVE LION! I hope this is a permenant fix. Please let me know if you try this and how it works for you

Why is the Lion download so incredibly slow?

I've been downloading Lion for seven hours now and it's less than a third of the way through.
Part way through I paused the download for a short time while I changed DNS settings on my Mac and router to Google, a recommendation I read about elsewhere. It has made no difference whatsoever.
I have a fast internet connection, so from what I've read elsewhere, the problem seems to be the App Store and Apple throttling back download speeds.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be interested to hear them.
Bring back software deliveries on CD/DVD sounds like the best solution to me.

In addition to ~Bee's good suggestions, here are a couple more ideas for your consideration.
First, be sure that no other app or device is using your internet connection.
Then you can check your real internet speed using http://speedtest.net/
If the test results don't show the expected speed, or if you have not already done so recently, try restarting your internet connection as follows. Shut down EVERYTHING. Then restart modem, router (if you use one), and Mac. Let each device's startup self-test complete before starting the next link.
Then see if your download is quicker.

I am trying to copy the bootcamp utilities to a usb drive so that windows device drivers can be updated. The download is very slow - in fact, it looks like its halted. Its been running for 2 hours. Is there a work-around for this? An alternative site to ge the file?

Assuming you need the BootCamp 5.Drivers
Just download and unzip the file at http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1638/en_US/BootCamp5.0.5033.zip which is Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033
Burm the contents to a DVD or Flash Drive
Then insert the DVD or Flash Drive in Windows and run setup as an administrator.

Why are the wi-fi speeds bad even with my own rout...

When I connect with an Ethernet, I get amazing speed of 74/76mb download. but soon as i connect via wi-fi with the hub or my own router, speeds dropped till about 20/25mbs.. whats causing the problem, I have tried to change channels but to no effect..
no question of the speed is great via the ethernet connection so i know there is no issue with the line or other wise, its just an wi-fi issue

I've got a Netgear WNDR3700v2 and I get the same (using either band 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz), my throughput seems to max out at 29Mb/s (can get 34 if I turn off wireless encryption - but not prepared to do that)
I don't generally use wi-fi for serious file transfers though, so it's not really a big concern for me but would be nice to hit full speed on wireless
Download a copy of inSIDDer (http://www.metageek.net/)& have a look to see if your area is particuarly Wifi saturated

If you start Activity Monitor with All Processes select and the CPU tab clicked
Then click the small arrow to the right of the % to sort the process using the most CPU to the top
If you tell us which processes they are and how much is being use we might be able to help you

The icon in the dock is NOT the file itself. You simply removed the dock icon. Go into your Applications folder and you'll find "Install Mac OSX..." and you have what you want.

Why is the wi-fi so slow on the time capsule??? Brand new bought last week? help? running about 13 devices on more than one network. Help please..

Give numbers.. cannot operate from general comments.
Is this 2.4ghz.. are you splitting the load over 2.4ghz and 5ghz??
Have you tried using SMB names.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric, with different name for 5ghz.
Lock the wireless channel for 2.4ghz and test 1, 6, 11 in turn.
Using WPA2 personal security only.. with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric of course.

Why is the On Demand so slow to respond?
You have very fast Internet but extremely On Demand Programming Why is that?
Fix it or ill have to go back to Road Runner. My wife runs a Preschool/Daycare and needs Fast On Demand programming because she's very busy with the kids.
She allows them to watch some of the children's programming if they did well in the class work but she doesn't have time to wait for the EXTREMELY SLOW Response.

Memory leakage causes it to run slow. One way to easily fix this is to reboot the box. It will automatically reallocate memory. To reboot, simply unplug power cord for 1 min then plug back in.
