  • Why is the iPhoto Library file so big?

Why is the iPhoto Library File so big?
I cancelled the option in settings that it copies the files to the Library but the LIbrary file grows and grows when I import new photos?
    Can someone help me?

You have disabled "Copy items to the iPhoto Library"?
Then the original image files should not be imported; you can check this by selecting one of the recently imported photos and using the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original File". Does it show you a file outside the library?
Your library will grow in size, when you import and edit photos, even if the originals are not included. iPhoto will store thumbnails of your photos, previews of the edited versions, of the faces, and if you sync your library with iTunes, there will also be an iPod Photo cache, that can be quite large:
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
You know, that  disabling "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" is quite risky, don't you? Just in case you are not aware of the risks - iPhoto does provide no tools at all, if the connection between your referenced original files and your thumbnails in iPhoto gets broken. Or if you need to move your photos to a different drive, when the drive fails, as will happen one day. You will not be able to migrate the library to a new computer or restoring from your backup will be difficult. You will need third party apps like iPhoto Library Manager to recover from such a situation.
If you need to free space on your mac it is much safer to move the whole library to an external drive, or to split it and relocate the partial library with the older photos to an external drive.

  • Why is the Library 1 file?

I recently converted to Mac and imported my photo library into iPhoto. What I don't understand is why it seemed to turn the entire Library into one massive file over 26 gigs large. It seems to totally defeat the ability to do a Cover Flow or preview in the Leopard finder and makes it harder to do things like edit some of the pictures in a different app like Photoshop or drag them into an email, etc. Seems completely anti-intuitive to abandon the folder and file structure of what was previously 14,000 separate photos (all our family pics going back to 1999).
Why did they do it that way and is there a work-around, short of having a redundant copy of all 26 gigs of content that is not manupulated by iPhoto?

    Citivas:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why all the copies of files in Projects?

Looking at the folders in 'Movies' they seem fairly self-explanatory:
'iMovie Events' - contains folders of imported event clips
'iMoview Projects' - contains the current and saved projects
'iMovie Sharing' - seems to hold copies of exports to iTunes in a folder named after the appropriate project, maybe YouTube stuff goes here too but I don't have an account. Not .Mac Gallery movies though.
Anyhow looking at a project folder that is 184.3MB size, 182.3MB of that is taken up my 3 movies:
    tiny.3gp
    mobile.m4v
    large.m4v
The tiny/mobile files are what got uploaded to my .Mac account, and the large.m4v is identical to an m4v file which I exported to AppleTV.
    So, what's the problem?
Well, why do I need the copies of things uploaded to .Mac shouldn't they have been deleted after upload?
Why do I need 3 copies (4 if I was syncing the AppleTV) of the large.m4v file?
There's one, large.m4v in the project folder, one in the iTunes subfolder of iMovie sharing, with the actual exported one in my iTunes library (I've checked using Show in Finder).
So for a 6 minute clip of video I've probably got 320MB effectively of 'copies', so it looks as though this application will eat drive space like there's no tomorrow.
Am I missing something or an unselected Preference?

iMovie '08 operates on a new model as I've said elsewhere in this forum.
DV video is no longer the prefered format for storage - your 6 minute clip would require 1.3 GB if it was in DV form. iMovie '08 is designed to make all your clips easily accessable. You will probably want to store your 'Events' on external drives, and iMovie '08 supports this.
We all have a lot to learn to learn about how to work with iMovie '08.

  • Why does the iPhoto library file copy so slowly?

Every few months I back up all the important stuff on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012, 13", 750GB) to my 3TB external hard drive.
This has worked well for as long as I can remember. I used to have a proper backup program but due to the nature of my work and files, recently I prefer to just manually copy over each individual folder in my parent home folder, so I can have control of what is replaced and what is merged, etc.
However this time backing up, I had to copy every folder and file in 'Pictures' separately. This is because after trying to copy the parent folder in one transfer it didn't seem to be working well. I noticed that around the 11.22GB mark, the transfer would always slow right down from ~35MB/s to ~0.5MB/s. As you can imagine, with a Pictures folder totalling almost 300GB, this isn't something I wanted to put up with.
In the end, I figured out what was causing the issue. I tried copying just the iPhoto library file and discovered the problem occurred again.
Why? Is this a Yosemite bug or is it to do with the way that the file is structured?
It works fine otherwise and does not seem damaged.

    no idea
maybe if you provided some information someone could help
What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? Why do you think it is getting larger? what exactly are you doing?
Could it be downloading photos from Your PhotoStream?

  • Why are step numbers larger than text font?

I just upgraded from RH7 to RH9, I find that when I generate Webhelp, the autonumbers in steps are larger than the font used in the text. This only shows up in the generated output, not the source. Bulleted lists, on the other hand, look fine. Bullet size is commensurate with text font size.

Thanks again, William.  I think that is a good suggestion. However, for some reason, the problem seems to have corrected itself. Several webhelp generations produced the anomoly, so it wasn't just a quirk of one compile. In fact, I think I saw this when using the trial version a month or so ago. Anyway, the only thing I did that might have affected this change is that I changed style sheets to the default for on compile and then switched back to my custom style sheet. Now I am generating ordered lists with the correct font size.
If the problem appears again, the first thing I'll do is try your latest suggestion.
    thanks again.

  • Why is the new rendered file smaller in size ?

    Hi all experts,
    I am a bit baffled.
You see, I did a 90 seconds effects in AE and the resulting file in mov rendered in 1920 x 1080 @ 25 fps yielded a file of 5 GB.
Then I bring in this file into Final Cut to be part of my sequence with the same settings of 1920 x 1080 @ 25 fps. The whole duration (including the 90 seconds clip from AE) is about 7 mins. How come this time the file is only 1GB ?
I mean why is the file which is 7 mins long incorporating a 90 secs clip of 5GB is only 1 GB in size ?
    Thanks

Todd's pointing to an FAQ reply concerning codecs.  In order to give an accurate answern, we need to know the codecs you used throughout the project, inside and outside of AE... and you really need to get a good understanding of codecs, too:

  • Why does the Save As File command create an empty .eml file?

When I use the >Save As >File command with a selected email, a .eml file is created with the right name, but it is empty.

  • Why does the ath.exe file stop working in the middle of backing up to ICloud?  How do I fix this?

While trying to back up to our ICloud account, the ATH.exe file stops working.  How do I fix this?

Hi Jaynet, thanks for your reply.
My cells do contain values so that's no problem. It's a very simple setup where I have 2x6 cells with a couple of parameters that are to be used by all my connections in the workbook.
Using vb code to update the "forgotten" parameters inside the connections was something I also was thinking could be a solution. Just felt it would be a shame when the functionality for what I'm trying to do cleary has been built
in to excel in a very simple way through the UI.
Before I go down the vb route I'm gonna see if I can find more info about any fixes for this bug in excel, maybe a hot patch or something like that. (I can't speak vb so building such a thing is going to take a while for me as I have to take bits
and pieces I find around the web to get stuff working) :)

  • Why is the saved JPG file much bigger than the original JPG file??

I used Image Processor in Bridge CS5 to open a jpeg, apply sharpening action and save as  a jpeg.  The bit size, color space and pixel dimensions are identical. However, when I save at Quality 12 I get a Jpeg file that is nearly DOUBLE the size of the original jpeg  Only if I drop it to Quality 10 do I get a file that approximates, but doesn't equal, the original jpeg.
    1) Isn't 12 the same as saying 100% and as such the file size should be the about the same?
    2) why would it increase so much?  Example about 6 mb to about 12mb???
Does this sound right? I am sure I am doing the steps and setting the parameters correctly. The action simply applies unsharp mask:
I can set the quality to 10 and get an approximate equivalent file size...but I want the higher quality of a 100%/12 setting.
    WHAT AM I MISSING???
    Thanks  - Kevin

    WHAT AM I MISSING???
The simple fact that JPEG is always a fully re-compressing format. Your newly created files bear no relationship to the original ones - no binary data structures are retained; the compression algorithm is always applied fresh upon the fully decoded original image and if you use different settings, the result is different. Moreover, since the initial compression artifacts become "valid pixels" once decoded, the successive compression has no way of knowing that they actually are "bad pixels" and those fine disturbances agfain result in different compression patterns. That is, after alll, why consecutive saves to JPEG will always degrade quality even at the best settings...

  • Why are my aliases larger than 4k ?

I just set up a whole lot of image files in a special alias folder. I expected each alias to be 4k in size. About 10% are 4k, the rest are between 44k and 56k.
The originals are all Photoshop JPEGs, created in Photoshop 2 and Photoshop 7.
I thought an alias was just a file pointer. Why are some of them so large? Is there any way to make them smaller? They are taking up way too much space on my USB thumb drive.
    iMac G5 17" 1.5Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Ok Niel - so far, so good. I have done what you suggested, and yes I now have a folder of 4k aliases - so thank you for that idea.
The one small problem is that there is no icon of the image that the alias represents, at least not until I click on the alias name in column view, when it shows up nicely. But in list view, icon view, or unselected in column view, I can't see what it is. Is there any way around this? I have tried using Get Info to paste the image into the icon field, but it won't let me do it, and I suspect that would increase the size to more than 4k. What I want is the old OS 9 system that would create a 4k alias AND give me a tiny image of the file as well.
If I really can't do it, then I will have to live with using the filename alone, but at least I have 4k aliases.

  • Why was the downloaded ISO file truncated?

    Hi,
I've been trying to download the windows server 2012 r2 ISO file but every time i got a truncated ISO. In other words, the size of the downloaded ISO is less than the actual size in MSDN download site. This introduced a problem installing windows server
2012 r2 on a VMware workstation. When i contacted VMware support about this, they confirmed that the issue is related to the truncated download. I am not behind a proxy and i am directly connected to my ADSL router.
    Please help.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
I could download the iso file without issue.
Which IE version did you used? Did you refer to this MS article?
You cannot download files that are 2 GB or larger
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/298618?wa=wsignin1.0
Meanwhile, I think the issue is more related to IE not windows server, right?  If yes, I could suggest you ask in IE forums:

  • Why are exported photos larger than dragged photos?

I have a jpg image in my iPhoto '11 (9.2.1) library that shows it is 3.7MB; imported direct from camera, no editing whatsoever.
If I drag it to my desktop (on a MacBook 13"), then File Info shows the dragged image is [still] 3.7MB with the same dimensions.
But, if I export from iPhoto to the desktop, as a JPEG with Maximum Quality and Full Size, the exported image on the desktop shows it is 7.5MB with the same dimensions.
    ? Huh?
    What's happening here?
Can somebody explain how an image can grow?
(I've replicated this three times with three separate images and it has happened all three times.)

I can explain and the image isn't growing.
You need to separate two things in your head. That file is not your Photo. That file is a box containing your Photo.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data.
iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
(As you've never edited the file, dragging is the same as exporting the original)
So now you have two files each containing the same Photo.
The file size is different because your camera applies a Moderate level of compression to the file when it creates it.
You're exporting at Maximum Quality. That means "minimum compression". So, the export from iPhoto is less compressed than the file from the camera, and therefore is larger.

  • Why does the Downloads Save files to Browse button do nothing when pressed?

I'm trying to download a couple of different files from a couple of different web sites. I see the "Opening {filename}" dialog box with the "Would you like to save this file?" question and the Save File button, but nothing happens when I click on the Save File button except that the dialog box closes.
When I go into Tools/Options General tab, I select the "Save files to" button, and when I click on the Browse button to choose a directory, nothing happens.
It appears I can no longer download files.

Please disregard. My "My Documents" folder is mapped to a file server on the network, and for some reason the last time I logged in, I was denied access to that network resource. I logged out and logged back in again, and I am able to download successfully.
