Why is the MacBook keyboard black instead of grey?

A curious question about industrial design.
When Apple released the unibody MacBook, why has the keyboard been changed to black instead of the original silver color from the older MacBook Pro models?
I personally prefer grey keys a lot more than black keys as they blend in well with the aluminum body. Grey, like black, doesn't get dirty over long periods of use.
Some argue that the contrast lets a user recognize the black keyboard better. My counter argument is that the silver keyboard on the old MacBook Pros did not trouble users. Since the hands are already rested in position during typing, users don't need to look at a physical keyboard as often as a touchscreen keyboard.
Others argue that it's to distinguish the keyboard from the body. If that's the case, then why is the trackpad silver instead of black?

A silver keycap with a white letter does not provide sufficent contrast as legislated.  A silver keycap and a sufifciently contrasting letter color would be very difficult to illuminate.  The current ID solution provides sufficient contrast, and the ability to illuminate the letter.
"Do you have any sources that describe the standard?"
I believe the inital legislation was passed by the EU, and it was part of ergo standards, including usability by the physically limited.

Why is the Macbook missing from the Apple Online store ? Can someone let me know what's going on ?

    Gone, *poof*.
I miss it and I think Apple should have kept it around as it's low key machine, great for kids and adults who didn't like a lot of flash.
Now the 13" MacBook Pro is considered the equivalent on a similar performance basis, however it has the bright silver rich looking case that draws thieves attention and really isn't a "Pro" machine at all with it's inferior low performing integrated graphics.
Heck most $500-$800 Windows laptops are just the same in performance and has a larger 15" screen.
If you need a anti-glare screen you have to opt for the 15" or 17" MacBook Pro and pay $50 more for the anti-glare, but it's worth it. The 13" doesn't have a anti-glare option, but we are petitioning Apple to include that option.
I think Apple considered the MacBook as a educational computer, thus replaced it for a line of iPads which make considerable more margins and provides less hardware benefits as all the hardware features, stand, keyboard etc. are separate purchases.

If I touch camera icon, the screen turns black instead of capturing image. Let me know how to troubleshoot?

    Try closing the Camera app:
    1. Double-click the Home button to reveal the Task Bar
    2. Hold down the Camera app for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close app
    4. Tap area above Task Bar to return to Home screen
If the above doesn't solve the problem, do a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider

  • Why is the photo only black in Edit mode with iPhoto 11?

Why is the photo only Black in Edit mode?
Everything works fine, except when I try to edit a photo, it shows as only Black.
I have tried every fix talked about on this forum, and some others - nothing fixes it.
Is this a Feature ? or is it a bug that no one is interesteed in fixing? It doesn't fill me with confidence in Apple when I see such random little glitches remaining unfixed.

Is it the same for newly created slideshows?  Although a long shot give this a try:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the above fails as a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it doesn't then the following my be your next step:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Why does the MacBook Retina 15" do software scaling to the native resolution of 2880x1800?

OS X does not allow changing the viewport resolution to the native 2880x1800, and it suggests 1440x900 as a retina optimized one. This means that software scaling is done on the fly. My question is, why?
    I have two suspicions:
    1. Running everything at the native resolution puts a bigger strain on the GPU, hence slowing down the OS, putting down battery time.
    2. The number of apps using retina-ready sprites is miniscule, hence Apple does not want to mess with the user experience. Although I doubt it, as software post-processing is done even now, and apps with non-retina sprites look slightly blurred. If the native resolution would have been used, they would just look a bit more blurry.
    Just some comments:
    1. Switching to the native resolution will make everything smaller, up to the point of not being usable. But this is a non-argument, as the OS could be smart enough to use bigger versions of the sprites/icons/text. Apple already demands that developers use hi-res sprites (OS X Human Interface Guidelines), hence everything could be scaled x2 and it would be the same size at 2880x1800, as it is at 1440x900 in the current version of the OS.
    2. Technically it is possible, as outlined here: Running the Retina MacBook Pro at Full 2880x1800 Resolution. Have a look at the comments too, there are some interesting observations in line with this question, but no definite answers.
    3. I am aware that the OS X Cocoa server is running at native resolution at all times. This question is concerned with the viewport resolution, which requires hacks to be set to the native one.

  • Why is the MacBook Pro Serial ATA transfer speed half that of the new iMac?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz 15.4 inch with a Seagate Momentus 160 GB, 7200 rpm, serial ATA, PRT hard drive. This hard drive has a serial ATA transfer speed rating of 3.0 Gigabits per second. The MBP logic board has an Intel 965 chip set that has a serial transfer speed rating of 3.0 Gigabits per second. I was at the Mac Store the other day and noticed that the new iMac 20 and 24 inch computers (that have the same intel 965 chip set) have an Intel ICH8-MAHCI speed rating of 3.0 Gigabits per second. My question is why does the MacBook and MacBook Pro's only have an Intel ICH8-M AHCI speed rating of 1.5 Gigabits per second? Attached is a copy of my Serial-ATA information:
    Intel ICH8-M AHCI:

    MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz (MA896LL) W/ 4GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.10) Seagate ST9160823AS Hard Drive

For several reason although the main one is that the vast majority of 2.5" drives have a 1.5Gbps interfacce. Drives with a 3Gbps interface in this size are rare where as they're very common in the 3.5" drive size which is used in the iMac.
Additionally you'll find that few drives do in fact make use of this larger bandwidth. For instance, the fastest 3.5" SATA drive one can buy for an iMac/Mac Pro up to 500GB is in fact a Western Digital Raptor 150GB which has an SATA I 1.5Gbps interface. So the interface bandwidth isn't everything. Yes there are faster drives than this now but they are in the 750GB size and up.

Character Count in Message app too small and pale, I can't see it.

I have used Settings - Accessibility  to increase font size which is wonderful so now I can read what I'm typing,  but still cant see the character count.
Can I make the charater count use a bigger font?
Can I have it black instead of grey?
ANd can I change the whilte-on-green for sent messages into well constrasted colours (like the old iPhone 3G?) so I can read them too?

Thank you Malcolm, that was a good idea ... it seems to have improved the text in the messages I;ve received and a slight improvement in the white-on-green of the snet messages.
Sadly did not affect the character count.
I fear it begins to look as if the character count has been overlooked by the designers at Apple and is left "outside" the range of things affected by the accessibility options. What do you think?

  • Why is the display going black when editing in FCP X?

Here's a tough one that the Genius Bar couldn't make heads or tails of:
I'm using FCP X to edit some videos, as I have for a few years now. Upon launching Final Cut Pro it loads my timelines etc as it always does, but sometime soon after (either while waiting for background tasks to run, or when click on an event) the screen goes black. I've replicated the same problem with multiple external drives, projects, etc.
And yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCP X following the specific instructions on the Apple.com website. No such luck. Taking it to the Apple Store resulted in a lot of head scratching, confirmation that something is definitely wrong, and a then this Support Forum question.
Anybody heard of something as bizarre as this? I'm hoping so. Thanks.
    My Gear:
    MacBook Pro w Retina Display
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.2
    Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1
multiple external drives (Lacie, WD, etc)

What do you mean by saying the screen is going black?
Do you mean the whole monitor or just the Viewer in FCP X?
Try these general troubleshooting strategies  even if you've already done them.
Use this free app to trash the preferences. This should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
    2. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3. Trash FCP X using this free app and reinstall it.

If these 3 measures don't work, create a new User Account (Admin) in System Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.

  • Why is the Macbook so heavy?

I am waiting for my new macbook to arrive and was just surfing around. Came across this review of a small Asus laptop http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=239
What's interesting is that it weighs only 4 pounds and has a built-in modem, card reader, express card port and s-video out. It does have a smaller LCD, but that does not add up to much weight. Given that it has everything the macbook has and also the above extras, what is it in the macbook that weighs so much?
    I'm just curious...thanks.

I think it's pretty typical on these boards for people to get worked up when any tiny little hint of a disagreement with Apple's decisions or designs is expressed. There is a post with someone asking about the best way to try to hide the glowing Apple on the lid of his black MacBook and some of the responses were less than cordial.
It's somewhat to be expected here as Apple fanatics are notoriously and rabidly defensive of Apple, and these boards are manned by a lot of Apple fanatics, which of course they do for free and it helps a lot of people.
It reminds me a lot of the console fans who are constantly getting worked up when someone suggests their Xbox is better than the Playstation or vice-versa.
As for the original question, I think it was certainly valid to ask, I wondered that myself. I considered going with a MacBook but when I saw that the MacBook Pro was only slightly heavier I decided to go with the MacBook Pro.
I think the consesus is that it's the metal frame in the MacBook that makes it heavier than you'd expect, but it would also make it a lot more sturdy than laptops without it.

  • Why does the macbook pro use both types of storage?

Why does the 13inch retina have both the 8gb hardrive and the flashdrive?

Oops reading your question again, I see there is a misunderstanding:
    http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
The 8GB is not hard drive memory.  It is chip memory just for multi-tasking purposes, and it can be custom configured to 16 GB of multi-tasking memory.  If you wanted to store applications or data files on it, you can create a RAM disk, but it actually would be copying the information off the SSD.  There is no "permanent" storage of data on the 8GB or 16GB of RAM.
There is no platter hard drive anymore.
The 128 GB is the SSD memory on the 13" model by default, and can be custom configured to 512GB of SSD memory.
The odd thing is your SSD can do swap file storage for multitasking, but also doubles as your place to store actual data files.
For awhile Apple mixed both platter and SSD.  Looks like that is no longer the case at least with the 13" Retina.
SSD memory is comparable to hard drive memory in that it is more "permanent" storage after reboot.  Calling it permanent is a misnomer though, since hard drives and SSDs can both fail without any warning, and a backup is always recommended:
